I have to memorize a sonnet.

Postby Alexlantis » Tue Jan 19, 2010 6:25 pm

So, I have to memorize a Shakespearian sonnet. I picked Sonnet 5. Now I have to memorize it by this Friday. Jan. 22, 2010. I'm basically screwed.
So, NSG, any tips?

EDIT: Almost memorized my sonnet by doing it by quatrain the old-fashioned way. Thanks for the help, guys? I was out in public, so I unfortunately wasn't able to put it to put it to song (though that would be epic). So, thanks to all. Glad for the help, I'll look back over this should I have to memorize anything else.

Pick a better sonnet. I suggest 128.

Sing it to yourself if you need to recite it, or maybe make a recording and listen to it frequently.

You might also want to write it out a few times, if you are a visual person.

Flashcards.

1 sentence per flashcard. Try to memorize as best as you can. Once you can memorize one sentence pretty good, move onto the next, but don't forget to redo earlier sentences to keep them in your memory.

A sonnet is what, 14 lines? Piece of cake, you just have to actually put effort in

Too confusing. I settled on this and, due to the combination of German stubbornness, American perserverance, and teenage rebellion, I'm sticking to it.
So, any tips on memorizing the bastard?

I tend to do well with writing, myself. Do it line-by-line, and let the rhyming scheme an meter help you.

I can't memorize things much longer than a line or two unless it's a song. I usually remember the tune instead. Hell, I'm no songwriter. I'll try.

Put it to a song's backround music, if the sonnet works with any songs you think could be easy to remember. Also, 2 days is still plenty of time ;)

Alright, I'll try. Any recomendations on songs that fit? Say, classic rock or something that is catchy?

You should have done 116 and then giggled.

Use the sonnet, there's a reason it's written the way it is, repeating it helps it memorize itself.

So, thats what kids get away with now days. Its only 14 lines long. Just read it at least 8 times tonight. Repeat it tomorrow at least 7 times in front of a mirror. Thrusday see how fast you can get through it, then again, and again trying to beat your best time. Friday try reading it 3 times before class. Best of... Break a leg, kid.

At least you didn't have to memorize Antony's speech in Act 3 scene II.

Yes.
There's a theory of multiple intelligences. Basically, we all have skills in various things -- like spatial relations, math and logic, visual learning, aural learning....

Anyhow, you need to engage as many as possible to remember it. I suggest reading it aloud, while trying to act it out. You'll see it. You'll hear it. You'll say it. You'll pace or walk or dance to it. And you'll remember it better.

Also pay attention to the rhyme scheme. See if you can't memorize the same-sound pairings.

How are you screwed? That's three-plus days. Don't tell me you can't memorize a four-stanza poem in that time. I'll wager you've memorized a catalogue of song lyrics longer than all of Shakespeare's sonnets.

Here's what you do: take it one line at a time, then connect the one you know by heart to the next one, and so forth. If you prefer to finish strong, you can work the process backwards (last line first, then add the one prior and finish with what you know). Finally, once you get a stanza, say it out loud right before you go to bed. Your subconscious locks on to things you think about right before you sleep.

Trust me, I memorized all the lines for Ebenezer Scrooge when I understudied for my high school's production of A Christmas Carol" in an emergency in five days. You can do a sonnet in three.

Read it out loud. Read the first two lines several times, then recite them from memory several times. Read the first four lines several times, then recite them from memory several times. Continue in this way until you have the whole thing. Do not add more lines until you have absolutely memorized the ones before them.

Get someone else, you read out one line, they read out the next and alternate like that. Then compete to see who can recite without reading first.

You'll remember their lines naturally, so you only, technically, need to learn half the sonnet. The competition aspect will also help you learn quicker.

Put it on a Ipod, or cd, then play it right before you go to bed and while you sleep. Keep it low enough for you to go to sleep, but that you can still understand it. Do that for a couple nights and practice frequently in the day and you'll have it committed to memory in no time.
