I'm constantly losing connection to the net, no matter what I do. They've replaced the routers (but not the modem, I think, which is supplied by the cable company). I'm connected by cat5 to the ethernet, so it's not a wireless issue. I lose connection anywhere between every 30 seconds to 2 hours.
My mother, for reasons beyond me, decided to assign all devices on the network static IPs, and none of them are identical, so it doesn't seem to be an IP conflict.
Personally, I've tried IPconfig on my end, released and renewing the router itself, restarting it.
Honestly, I have no damn clue what to do. When it comes to routers and such, I'm fairly clueless.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: If it's of any use, the current router is a D-Link DIR 655. If needed, I can go rummage in their closet to discover the cable modem model. Normally I don't clutter NSG with "OMG HALP" threads, but I really, really can't stand losing connection in the middle of a game or talking to a friend, watching tv, etc.

Yeah, I've tried that. Repeatedly.Fartsniffage wrote:Who's your ISP?
Time-Warner Cable.
I'll be back in a couple hours to answer any further questions.

Call your ISP. The last time I had issues with connections I tested every piece of kit in the house before calling my ISP, turned out there were some config issues at their end. The put a fix in and 2 hours later it was as good as new.

Yeah, router company wanted me to pay for technical support (no thanks), and the first call to the ISP just had them reset the router and test signals, still no fix. Now they're looking to send out a technician. *Crosses fingers*

How many TV's does your mom have hooked to the cable?
And how is it split ?

I'm not sure how the TVs would affect it, but there're two; the downstairs one has a DVR, whilst the upstairs one lacks a box and is just directly plugged in. I think the signal itself is split from the street, done by their technicians when we moved in.

A three way split... hmm.
And it is digital Tv that maybe your parents recently upgraded to it?
sounds like they have to change the splitter to a 3.5/7/7 db splitter and put the internet on the 3.5db one.
It affects it because every time you split a cable it reduces the power of the signal, too many splits and no one gets any signal.
analog cable was easy to boost, but digital and internet don't work that well with an amplifier.
also the internet is very snesitive to low power conditions.

In English, and more slowly, please, sir. From what I gather, the signals of the TV versus the internet data may be conflict/clashing, then?

when you split a cable it decreases the power by half(about 3 Db).
A lot of cheap splitting jobs back in the old day of analog cable(and no internet) would just string 2 splitters in together to make three lines.
So they might need to replace the 2 splitters, with 1 three way splitter. the 3.5 db is for the internet and the 7's db is for the Tv's.
