Conservatives... *Sigh*

Postby Zykorinov » Sat Nov 21, 2009 4:40 pm

I spent 2 hours at my neighbors, who is a very old conservative republican, raking leaves. While there, I got in a debate with her over the health care bill, and liberals/conservatives in general. She STRONGLY believes that all Liberals are evil, even though I'm one. She also thinks that I'm getting brainwashed by MSNBC, even though I told her I watch FOX News (which she regards as the bible) to see the Conservative side. After repeated exclamations of "You're being brainwashed!", "You're wrong!", and "I'm disappointed in you!", I finally gave up, and asked her why. She said that Conservatives are right, and that, without Glenn Beck, Lieberman, and the Fox crew, she wouldn't know what's going on in Washington. I scoffed at this, but she insisted. What's your guys opinion on this?

She's...a moron. And ironically quite brainwashed herself.

Indeed.

But why do you waste your breath trying to tell someone that the world is round when they believe it to be flat? I don't associate with those kinds of people. I just wait until they lose their jobs and health care, and then I laugh at them and say "I told you so".

Poor lady :( there are many people like this. It is sad the damage these fear mongerers do to people. I wish the united states had a better education system that would teach people to more critically analyze sources (including all media CNN is bias too. Not as bad as fox but everyone has some bias or agenda)

In my opinion, both sides are stupid. But unfortunately, it's impossible to survive as a centrist in America these days.

Right-wingers make no bloody sense to me. They're incredibly stubborn and with few exceptions are devoid of any intellect, so you can't reason with them. At all. And those with intellect are on the right because they don't care about others (and will tell you so when asked).

True. They're pretty much unmovable in their beliefs. I just don't get them at all. The fact that I'm basically the only Liberal in an entire county of Conservatives is funny, also. This is true. I live in Kentucky, heart o' the bible belt.

I think it's important to not refer to these idiots as "conservatives", for they aren't. There complete right-wing fanatical nuts. Even the far-right in Europe supports universal health care and more spending on public transport and railways. Many actual conservatives have well thought-out views, are able to write academic prose, and are intelligent people. Most of them aren't from the US, however. If you look at it, everyone is a "liberal" compared to the US -- the conservatives in every other industrialised country are to the right of the American Democrats.

A 30-second sound bite and a bumper sticker does not equal political debate, no matter how many rednecks or hippies are involved.

I agree. If someone started quoting Adbusters, Naomi Klein, or Michael Moore, I'd tune them out just as fast.

That's just as bad, if not worse, than not knowing anything at all. False information is worse than no information. If she wanted to quote some essays from The New Republic or some of the more right-leaning articles in Foreign Affairs, I'd be willing to listen and discuss them.
