It is probably one of the smaller issues with the dude, though.

Yeah, to be honest, though "hunting" domesticated animals illustrates very neatly his douchebaggery, I am far more concerned with all that Christian Soldier crap. This man clearly has no idea what the US is or how its government, Constitution and laws work. He is clearly not competent to hold national office.

According to his bio...

He was just coming off a major confrontation with the State of Idaho, Department of Agriculture over whether Rex needed a license or not to own an elk ranch. Since 1994 it was a requirement that all elk ranches be licensed. Prior to 2001, the Department of Agriculture inventoried the elk by counting heads. In 2001 they decided each elk needed an individual inventory. This required catching each elk and reading their small metal ear tags.

Rex was unable to catch nine elk that were on the mountain, but still contained in his 1000 acre facility. Because he couldn’t catch the elk and refused to dart them, the Department of Agriculture refused to renew his license. Rex challenged their authority to license ranches. Being a veterinarian and having worked with many cattle, sheep, and horse ranches he knew that they were not required to have a license, so why should elk ranches have the requirement?

The Department of Agriculture frustrated by the challenge and their inability to enforce the licensing, went to the 2001 legislature and changed the civil penalty law for what they ostensibly claimed were “bad actors” that thumbed their noses at the law.

The law prior to 2001 was a $100 minimum with a $5,000 maximum if a person was found guilty. Following the law change in 2001 it read, “each day of a continuing offense can be treated as a new offense.” So instead of a maximum penalty of $5,000 per offense if convicted, the new law allowed for $5,000 a day.

From the day the new law became effective until Rex had a formal settlement meeting for operating without a license the potential fines were over $750,000.00.

Rex’s solution to the problem was change the law! And that is what he did. With the help of Representative Dennis Lake in the House and Senator Don Burtenshaw in the Senate, the civil penalty law of 2001 was repealed and the rule requiring licensing of elk ranches was deleted.

Rex was profoundly moved by the victory and realized that rather then submitting to bad laws it is a person’s responsibility to try and change them. He also learned that it is possible for one man to make a stand against the government and win. This led to an intense study of the Constitution by Rex.

So, what you're telling us is that his entire political career is based on a selfish desire to get his own way in everything?

That's called democracy.
Everyone works to get their own way and those who succeed in the legislative branch are called politicians or lobbyist.

In the judicial branch they are called lawyers and judges.

And in the executive branch they are called governors and presidents.

I didn't mean to assert that a trophy elk that was purchased from a farm and point-blanked was in any way as valid as a trophy elk taken in the wild. Far from it. In fact, it was not even my intention to comment on the hunters that utilize the farms at all, though I suppose it was inevitable. Rather, I was merely detailing how being a trophy elk rancher is not inherently douchebag-y. They are simply exploiting a demand in the market, and doing so in a comparatively humane and appropriate way, as far as cattle go. Besides, I imagine they make a bit of cash off the shed antlers as well for those who'd rather not hunt them, but that's just speculation on my part.

It is interesting to me that it is outlawed in some states. I don't think butchering cows (cow cows, not cow elk ;)) is illegal in any state (yet), and the elk has a far more sporting chance than they do. Maybe it's just butthurt government officials who can't afford the trophy elk being all jealous and not wanting those elk to count :P.

By the by, does anyone know if domesticated elk, grown on an elk ranch, can even qualify for state records? Or do they have to be native? I should know this, my family being the sport hunters they are but alas it has been some time :(

Late last month, the church issued a statement distancing itself from the prophecy and from Rammell, saying the prophecy has "not been substantiated by historical research."

Considering what Mormons will recognise as 'historical research' that's saying quite a bit!

From my experience, Mormons are not so closed-minded as far as their own history goes. In fact, they gobble up things like genealogy information and early church documents like there is no tomorrow. Most likely, they mean that there is no substantiation of the 'single thread' Constitution theory within any of the prophetic/church historical documents, of which they likely have an incredibly in-depth understanding.

But outside the realm of that specific instance I do agree with you with a grin and a nod. There are a lot of unsupported historical claims regarding the Americas with regard to their faith, and a good deal of what we have researched of Central/South American history can be construed as being at odds with their viewpoint without them so much as blinking an eye.
