I read the preparation method the Japanese employ reduces the mercury significantly.

Why not? Is there a law that says species are not allowed to go extinct?

If so, then it was probably drawn up by the same people who claim that climate change isn't a natural phenomenon anymore, ie morans.

Did you, by chance, mean to write "morons"?

So long as we don't over harvest whales there's nothing wrong with killing them. We do the same thing with deer, turkey, duck, quail, rabbit, squirrel, wild boar, elk, raccoon and a plethora of other types of game animals as well as the harvesting of numerous types of fish and other marine life and have no problem with it. So why shouldn't we be able to harvest species of whale like the Minke which are not even considered a threatened species whale's aren't anything special.

You know, I've actually watched a couple of seasons of Whale Wars, and I'm surprised the Steve Irwin is still afloat. Sorriest crew I've ever seen.

And?

I can train a parakeet to say certain words or a cat to eat with a fork, monkeys use tools and you can have a dog guide a blind man through a city, mice can find their way through a maze and an elephant can paint a picture. Whales are not special by any stretch. Thankfully the "Whale Wars" program accurately portrayed the Sea Shepard crew as the environmentalist nut jobs they really are and keeps this "Save the whales" nonsense from getting any real support from anyone important.

I love watching that show. I'm constantly at awe just how stupid, inept, and lucky those hippies are. They have no business being out in that part of the ocean with that vessel, and especially with that moron in charge. . . .

Wonder how long until the French realize that they could park a Rubis class boat out there and hit the Sea Shepard with an Exocet when noone is looking, and just let the Media think the ship was lost in a storm or something. . .

As far as intelligence goes, right after the primates, and the cetaceans, and the elephants, you know what animal comes next? The pig. Pigs are smarter than dogs, and they do come pretty damn close to elephants in terms of intelligence. Why don't people know it? Because pigs don't have as showy of a means of expressing it as an elephant or a dolphin or a gorilla. No grasping appendages other than their mouth, and their environment (commercial pig farms) doesn't allow them much room for it either.

And unless you're a vegetarian, I doubt you have a problem with people eating bacon and wearing leather belts and shoes that came from pig hide. If whales get protected becuase of high-level intelligence, why shouldn't pigs get the same protection? Where do you draw the line on what's acceptable to hunt and what's not?

And getting past the marine mammals, octopuses are the next smart animals in the ocean. They've mastered tool use as well, and they've shown the ability to solve puzzles and they've been seen playing with toys. Do you have a problem with calamari too?

And one more thing...I call BS on whales having a larger vocabulary than humans, unless you're using a definition of the term that doesn't mean 'set of words.' And tool use isn't so special either. All kinds of animals use tools. And all kinds of animals play.

So basically, either accept that whales are no more special than other animals and so they don't deserve special protections, or say that a whole lot of other animals also deserve them, to the point where it's impractical to give it to all of them.
