We've been studying the human body for centuries. Plenty of people know.

"A dead system is only different to a system that has never been alive in one respect: it used to be a living system.
A living system is merely one that uses external energy to lower it's own internal entropy. (ie. Consumption & Homoeostasis)
Death is what occurs when a living system is no longer able to maintain it's internal entropy. (ie. The failure of homoeostasis.)"

Why do you think so? What is this based on?
What about when the population declines? Where does the consciousness go then?
What about before there was life? Where did it come from?
What about when the population increases? Where does the consciousness for the new bodies come from?

This is the only planet with life on it in the universe. This is the only universe in the world (pun intended.) Humans are the only species of animals.

From my admittedly nearly non-existent understanding of religions involving reincarnation, the "soul", for lack of a better word, is extratemporal.

I never said any of that. The "population" in my question refers to conscious living systems in general.

I don't know why I believe in God. Woke up one morning and had an epipheny. I should never eat before sleeping. ;) I don't believe in a soul, though God probably has some attribute or essence that can be compared to a soul. Consciousness is the next best thing so to speak. There's this one guy, can't remember his name (I'll find him later and give ya a link.) who did research into reincarnation. Because I disbelieve in a soul (at least in this universe, or at this present time.) Consciousness and mind seem to be the only thing that would transmigrate.

As far as I am aware, the scientific research suggest that consciousness is simply the activity of our brain, and when the brain dies the consciousness ceases to be. Indeed, there are many cases where events that have caused brain damage have caused changes in an individual's personality & behaviour.

I'll admit that that's more than possible. But couldn't it be possible that consciousness continues after death into a new body?

I do not think so.
In order for that to happen, there would have to be some sort of mechanism to transfer the consciousness.
If consciousness is, as the evidence suggests, a result of the brain's functioning, the only way to transfer consciousness would be to physically transfer the brain without killing or damaging it.

Well I could understand from an Atheist standpoint how you would fear death and the unknowns of the afterlife (if any). According to the teachings of Islam, we believe the spirit continues to "live". The body is merely a vessel that carries the soul through this material dimension. Have you ever astral projected? when people have outer-body experiences, they go through the realization the soul can exist without the physical body.

This is interesting to me, because my personal experience has been that theists are the ones who tend to fear death, while atheists are far more likely to be OK with the idea of dying. Indeed, fear of death, and a need to believe that one won't REALLY die, seems to be one of the primary reasons given by theists for why they are theists in the first place.

Depends on what you believe in. Nirvana exists for those who believe in it, so does Heaven, Purgatory, Shangrila, Nothing, etc.

Personally, I believe I'll be in another dimension no different than earth, living as someone else. Not reincarnation, but close to it. Either that or I'll be a vampire which will be just as awesome.
