The best alternative fuel

Postby Screensaver » Sun Mar 10, 2013 11:15 am

So out of all of the options of alternative fuels which do you think is the best?

Well it certainly isn't electric cars. For one thing electric cars are a safety hazard since emergency workers already have to take a ton of special precautions when dealing with crashed hybrids and electric cars to avoid being electrocuted by exposed high voltage wiring. That is why it takes longer to rescue people from crashed hybrids and electric cars than traditional petrol or diesel powered cars. Also it takes forever to recharge them and even if quick-recharging technology were to become widespread then the entire electric grid would have to be reconfigured to deal the extra load and power plants would have to generate more electricity (thus causing more air pollution) to meet demand.

Biofuels, while more practical than electric cars, just simply won't be viable since there is no way we can produce enough biofuels to meet demand. Therefore I feel that hydrogen is the best alternative. Hydrogen can easily be derived from water and since the hydrogen can be produced at a dedicated hydrogen production plant and then transported to fuel stations via tanker truck the electric grid won't have to be reconfigured to handle an extra load of electricity. This is also true thanks to the fact that the hydrogen production plants can use just simply use surplus electricity or draw their power from dedicated onsite wind farms, solar power plants, geothermal power plants, or hydroelectric dams.

Electricity is technically not a green fuel, as the electricity needs to come from somewhere.

Electric cars but they are not realy clean because most energy is not clean and green. We need to still find better ways too make green energy.
Windmills and Solar Power can't work every where and are very expensive.

And Biofeuls takes massives lands that could be used to grow food.

Hydrogen fuel cells will suffice until fusion power is minimised.

So far electric seems to be the most practical option, but who knows what we'll develop in the future.

Idealism. There seems to be an endless supply of it, and the only pollution it generates is hot air.

Well, sure: it depends on the source of the electricity. Though I'll point out that it's much easier to generate power efficiently and cleanly in a large, stationary power plant than it is in a little vehicle.

I'm thinking biofuel at current, if we succeed at getting it from Algae.

I'm not too knowledgeable on it's viability, but it has the advantage of (seemingly) working with current engines, which seems a big plus to me.

I'm not sure how long biofuel would be useful for, but it seems okay for "Transitioning" between fossil-fuel and something better.

Biofuel from Algae would be great. As it is now though they're getting it from stuff like Corn which is hurting our food supply.

Truthfully, I'm pro diesel (TDI engines have made me pro-diesel). However, if one were to select an 'alternative' fuel simply based upon available technology that exists today, I'd have to say Natural Gas or Hydrogen seem the most technically feasible.
