Civil War in Syria, what do you think?

Postby Repubblica Italiana » Sun Jul 08, 2012 6:34 am

We all know that Syria has in place a civil war.
In your opinion what should be done?
In effect, you should make a new peacekeeping mission (as in Iraq, Afghanistan) acting directly on Syrian soil, act only by air and sea (as in Libya), or leave it alone and leave alone the rebels?
I think we should just leave the rebels, because as you all know, is undergoing an economic crisis (which here in Italy, where I am, is very strong), and make a peacekeeping mission costs a lot.
What do you think?

The people of Syria should decide their fate alone. Any assistance to the Syrian government to destroy the rebels, or any assistance to the rebels to destroy the Syrian government, can be categorized as an "act of intervention".

We just can ask both sides to put their weapons and talk peacefully. It is not even our business, unless we want to take its oil.

Groundbreaking suggestion. If only we'd thought to talk peacefully to the Germans in WW2, everything could have turned out fine.

Just let I happen, no need for NATO to get involved because it could make the war bigger. The united states should NOT get involved because do we really need one more reason for the middle east to hate use? The only countries I think have any right to involve themselves is Turkey, Israil, Lebanon, and Iraq

Just saying like honesty it non of a buisness if they want to fight the government to better their lives good for them if you volunteer to join what ever side you want good for you at least your doing something about instead of talking like your an expert on the revolution. I just personally believe we should not get involved.

We should do what we did in Libya, provide air support and supply the rebels weapons, without actually sending in ground troops. My opinion.

The government of Syria is inhumane, using children as body shields, massacures of any and all, they just need to die...Im with the rebels on this

I think that dissolving the Ottoman Empire was not, in hindsight, the best of ideas.

I must say, I'm struggling to get particularly excited about all these Arab revolutions, seeing as Libya, Egypt and Tunisia have demonstrated rather well that the most likely result of a succesful revolution will be an authoritarian Islamist regime. As opposed to, y'know, an authoritarian secular regime. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.

The issues in the middle east will work themselves out but wether or not there will be more blood shed is something I don't know.

someones not followed the libyan election closely, in egypt et the democratic versions are certainly better than the old tyrants.
either way the assad regime have proven without a doubt its intention to survive at the cost of civilian lives, whatever is necessary to bring in a new democratic civilian government should be done by any outside forces willing to help

Here we have a classic example of the fallacy that democracy is inherently Good and therefore should always be supported, as if a racist, sexist, intolerant theocratic or imperialistic government that has been democratically elected is inherently preferable to a tolerant, if unelected and undemocratic, regime. I don't worship democracy.

A dictatorship can be better then a democracy if the right people run it.

I think that we (United States) should stay the fuck out and work on solving our own damn problems before trying to "help" some other third-world country. Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against legitimately helping people, but when you're just going to do it by sending in soldiers to kill?

Assad seems to have a different take on the situation ...

The New York Times wrote:BEIRUT, Lebanon – President Bashar al-Assad of Syria said in an interview on German television that public support for his rule meant he would remain in office, and maintained that victims of violence among government supporters, including the military, outnumbered those among civilians.

And who's proposing that? In the US government, I mean.

No further action required. The rebels should know, if they win, Capitalists will surely rise in Syria.

The rebels must know that Assad's government is the best, they must surrender.

I wish I could go and help the rebels. This may sound a bit international brigade-ish, but I don't trust Western Governments for a military intervention. They don't care about the syrians, but about their own interests. People should be able to go and volunteer to help the revolution. Empty talk is rather frustrating, to be honest.

Al-Assad is a disgusting piece of fucking shit and has to be overthrown.
