Porn being banned in the UK?

Postby Isteria » Thu May 10, 2012 9:06 am

Recently, David Cameron has said that he may soon make ISPs (Internet Service Providers) like Virgin and BT to start to block adult content, and that people who don't want adult content to be blocked can opt out with the ISPs. Do you think, it terms of Internet Censorship, that this is a good idea? Bear in mind that this is done mainly for families.

What is your opinion?

I personally think it's the families' responsibility what content they allow their children to be exposed at in the Internet.

I said the banning of pirate websites was just the start and they didn't believe me. They're coming for us. Revolt while you can!

Seriously though, having censorship as the default is not a good thing. It's not too serious, but it's not good.

I thought it was an opt in thing?

It seems you've said that in a way, but I would suggest changing the wording of the OP to strongly emphasise the opt in part or at least use the phrase.

ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

Help ;)

I guess that the adult content would be those sites with flashing porn all over it. There is a discerniment line between those stuff and cultural things.

I don't see why you're worried. It's not like he's ever going to succeed.
I used NS a couple of years back, was involved in 6 or so fruitless RPs that died within days of conception. I never did anything memorable to anyone, including myself, to the extent of not being able to remember what my nation's name was.

Why am I back? I was searching the webernetz for pictures of xenotech power armor for a custom 40K Chaos Space Marine codex after /tg/ failed to produce any, and one of the results was here. "Oh, hey, I remember those guys. Heh. Let's see what they've got." You guys didn't actually have anything, but I had a look around and decided to make a new account because why not?

Yeah, sorry, I meant to say that people had to 'opt in' to watch porn. This would be an appropriate link to read more about it.

That line is very blurry. There truly are special interest groups that oppose the public display of nudity in art.

Er....your thread title is ridiculous. It bears no relation to reality.

At worst, the proposal (although even calling it a proposal is being generous and, no, David Cameron cannot "make" the ISPs do anything) would mean that when you're signing up for a broadband supplier you tick a wee box saying that you don't want adult content to be blocked.

There's due to be a consultation on whether you should have to opt in for the filters, or opt out of the filters. This means nothing will happen for quite a while yet.

Ahahahahah! Funny line that. Nothing the Tories have done in the last thirty years has been for families, unless you count destruction of families beneficial.

I reckon Richard "Dirty" Desmond will just throw money their way, and it'll be dropped soon after their poll ratings rise (if they do, if not it'll be quietly shelved during the next crisis).

Interestingly enough, the gods of the Disc have never bothered much about judging the souls of the dead, and so people only go to hell if that's where they deserve to go. Which they won't do if they don't know about it. This explains why it is important to shoot missionaries on sight. Terry Pratchett. Eric

I just wanted to see how many people on NationStates mastu-I mean oppose the idea of adult censorship (or agree). I'm also not sure about how many people who secretly do masturbate are really open enough to tick the box to opt out. In my opinion, thats pretty much a BIG marker saying 'I jack off', and I wouldn't really be at liberty to disclose that with my ISP.

How would this be a ban on pornography?

Adult content is automatically blocked on mobile web devices, you had to go instore and get said blocker removed.

Though admittedly Vodefone's definition of 'adult content' is surprisingly broad.
