Immortality. Is it for you?

Postby The Great Watchers » Wed Jul 20, 2011 10:22 pm

Ok, ladies and gentlemen, I have a question to pose for all of you:

If you had the ability to become immortal, would you do it?
What kind of parameters would you set for your immortality? (Meaning, would you want the ability to die if you wanted to quit living, or would you want to stay alive indefinetly?)
How do you think people around you would take it? Would there be controversy about it in religious groups?
And finally, do you think the human mind can hold up to eternity?

Pointer for NSG: write in a normal sized font. The big font is not really necessary to carry your point across. :)

And no, immortality is not for me. I do not wish to live forever.

Yes. I would.

Unlimited immortality. Never die, never take injury, etc. If I could, I would adopt god-status.

Idk if I'd finally crack. Worth it though. Probably not; I'm a materialist bastard.

Capitalism is always the answer. Whenever there's a problem in capitalism, you just need some more capitalism. If the solution isn't capitalism, then it's not really a problem. If your capitalism gets damaged, you just need to throw some capitalism on it and get on with your life.

Hey, immortality is an idea everyone has thought of at least once. I may take it, if I have the ability to end myself.

How about a state where I don't die until I simultaneously want to die and try to kill myself? If I just want to die, I won't. If I just try to kill myself during a possible irrational mood swing but I don't actually want to die, I won't. Also, I'd enjoy not getting older.

That you may take it doesn't mean everyone presented with the opportunity wants it, Watch. Besides, I don't think the human mind is fit for immortality, if it were possible. At one point, we need oblivion, we need release. That we know death will come makes life even more precious, IMO. If immortality were possible, I think that preciousness would be sucked out everything.

If I had the chance to see the world move, like an obelisk frozen in time, it would be amazing. It would be horrible to watch everyone I love die, but that's why I would want to be able to die if I say so.

Then why take immortality? If it would sadden you to see those you love die, why live forever in the first place?

I mean, I can understand wanting to watch history unfold while you remain unchanged, but is it really worth it? Can you watch all the ages of the world pass you by while you yourself remain unchanged?

Your life would take on a totally different meaning and you wouldn't fit in with anyone because you wouldn't be motivated by the fear of death. It would probably be harder to connect with people. I don't know if I'd do it.

And you would seem different, and guess what the human throng tends to do to those who seem different? You would be ostracized, and in the worst case scenario, hunted down.

However, this is all a hypothetical. The chance of immortality, in my book, doesn't exist. However, some religious denominations do disagree with me on this. Jehovah's Witnesses, for example, claim that when the time of Reckoning happens, those who are in their church will be saved and will remain immortal, on this earth.
