Yeah it hit me really hard too. I was borderline depressed last weekend. Although I am better now.

Well, I have depression, so I did feel down for quite a bit afterward. Even our Japanese teacher talked about it.

Two things - saying environmentalist would cheer the tsunami for the damage to auto plants and then later laughing at and mocking both Diane Sawyer and refugees over a report on a refugee camp when she mentioned they were recycling.

The proper response to his comments would be to question where he was at the moment the Sendai earthquake hit. Was he slipping on some ice outside his home? Was he tripping over an underfoot pet?

Japanese baseball's been talking about postponing the start of the season for a few days in order to cut back on electricity, and now they've done it, with a push from the player's union and the education ministry. They'll also be playing more day games and under reduced lighting for night games.

Well, recycling is un-American and unmanly. Real Americans™ waste as much as they can and seek to reclaim nothing, because the ability to waste is proof that God loves us.

Moron. I've seen people justify conspicuous consumption as a right, but until Rushed Limp-Dick came along, no one ever insisted that it was a moral obligation.

Thought I posted that one already. Anywho, it's aimed at kids and is actually quite good. IMHO a lot of adults in the US and Europe needed something about this speed.

Given the current situation, more day games, and reduced lighting for night games are very reasonable demands.

Well sea shepherds are classed in with the environmentalists and the head guy wrote a poem about it being a great divine retribution for their whaling.

Sea shepherds defines the movement?

That's like saying the Taliban defines all of Islam.

Where exactly did it retribution for whaling?

It's interesting that people are determined to take trolling and expand it to having originated by him. Sure the guy is a dick; but I don't take cut and paste claims with no links. The stuff I have read are making claims but I haven't seen legitimate proof.

Every cause has a few nut bags but keep in mind part of his business is also publicity. Publicly stating Japan deserved this would loose him a few backers.....

In fact he has a response:

His response is contradictory to his earlier poem. That said he's a wise enough guy to distance himself from that "Karma" crowd.

Also its 5:41 pm here in California and no earthquake. I think its safe to say that Jim Berkland is full of shi.... rumbling sounds, excessive shaking and sound of house collapsing. Crawls out of wreckage and dusts self of never mind.

Well?

I can see people can make such claims. The guys views on whaling and the porpoise slaughter. A poem about the mighty ocean striking the east.

Take a neutral view and it seems like a poem about a tragedy.

Even with the Neptune comments, I have seen other poems (not related to this event) referencing Neptune....

Absolutely. Fortunately, Japan is a technologically advanced country. Lessons will be learnt of course to build things even better and more advanced; in the mean time this brings out the best in humanity to show solidarity and help one another inspiring the human spirit. They will get through this, I've no doubt. Earlier today, I overheard a Japanese woman talk about this (at my local co-op), with the shop assistant and she was saying that Japan received funds from tsunami struck Indonesia, (2004), this is a good example of the moral and physical support Japan needs right now.

If everyone in the NSG community donated $10 to the relief efforts / charitable organizations focusing on relief to Japan, I can't even imagine the impact it would have. It would certainly make me very happy to be part of such a community...

How is sending money to Haiti sad? Burning Americans' pockets? I don't advocate sending your mortgage payment to Japan. I advocate forgoing you $5 latte every day for a month and sending them $150. The average donation to Red Cross has been ~$60 for relief in Japan.

I petitioned a fundraiser against my school student council because they kept saying that this was and would be the only major disaster for the next couple of years. My petition passed and the fundraiser was stopped. I was thanked by many parents and administrators who also opposed the fundraiser. I later researched fundraisers that other schools did for Haiti and found out that the Red Cross never used it. Haiti did nothing for us. They had a corrupt government that did'nt help their own citizens. Japen is an allie with the U.S and has done a lot for the U.S. Plus, they have a nuclear problem on their hands. Haiti didn't have that.

...It is because of their corrupt government that the citizens of Haiti were so poorly prepared for the disaster that happened, and the aid has been going to those citizens, not their government.

You know, as somebody who actually was in the Scouts in elementary school, that's some pretty fucking insulting doctrine coming from somebody who uses the name of the Scouts as their avatar nation. A big part of it is about helping people who are in need, not helping people because they've already done something for us.

Fucking disgusting.

In the case of ANY natural disasters or concerns of foreign nations, it is always best for the United States to be altruistic and help those in need. We can't help only because we expect something in return.

And at the end, if you must persist in the "what does the US get back from helping" attitude, the United States improves its international image.
‎"As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives."
