I have non-political reasons for living where I do that are more important.

if you dont vote you have no right to complain.
No it really fucking doesn't matter, one vote isn't gonna change a thing.
I have a right to free speech in my country, I don't give a flying fuck if I vote or not, who are you to dictate me on speaking my mind?

He lives in the same state I do,ConfusionIllinois, and we not only have our extremely dominant Democratic Party but hopeless Gerrymandering on top of that. I still vote, of course, but living in such a deep red part of the state, do kind of understand why he'd be so disillusioned.

I grew up in a rural red part of Illinois. The general feeling is disillusionment with politics in the state. The idea is that liberals in Chicago who control the state not only do not care about them, but loath them.
Glad I left. Still feel bad for rural Illinois though.

This is why I make Soviet Illinois jokes. Even we Downstate Lefties hold nothing but bitterness and contempt towards the dinosaurs that run the party up North and don't listen to anybody but themselves, though to be fair, Cook County alone has 55% of the population, so they don't have to listen to anybody else.

Would you rather live in a Chicagoless Illinois or an independent state of Chicagoland?

Middle of the road. I think Illinois should be split, but the split shouldn't be Chicagoland/rest of the state. I think it should be Northern Illinois/Southern Illinois.
Southern Illinois keeps the name Illinois because is where the actual Illinois Indians lived and Northern Illinois can be renamed Wabash, or something.

Chicago almost wasn't part of Illinois at all. It was almost part of Wisconsin when the Illinois Territory was carved up, but the border was moved further north so the I&M Canal would be under a single state's jurisdiction rather than two states with divergent interests.

The state legislature would never approve it.
