Learning National Anthems

Postby Arkhastok » Thu Apr 18, 2019 1:38 am

So I’ve been into a little hobby for the past two years which is learning the national anthems of foreign countries. I’ve got 31 (I think?) learnt although I’ve been less active in it recently.

I’m just wondering, does anybody else do anything similar? I haven’t seen many people do it online so maybe there might be some people on NS who do this as well.

For some reason for a while some friends and I as some sort of meme at parties or other gatherings, once we got pretty drunk one of us would turn on the Soviet national anthem and drunkenly belt it as loud as we could, so I've sort of learned that through repetition.

Soviet one was actually the one that sparked my interest. Became a meme in my school and then it just went to союз

I know:
China (ROC and PRC), Japan, Korea (ROK and DPRK), South Vietnam, Russia (Empire, USSR, RF), Serbia, Croatia, old Slovenia (Yugoslavia), Montenegro, Poland, Ukraine, Sweden, old Belarus (BNR) and maybe some more that I can’t be bothered to name.
There are some people that are there purely to oppose everything I say or do.

Ah, yes, a fellow anthem memorizer.

I've learned the words to the German, French, Belgian (in French and German), Dutch, Italian, Russian (current and USSR), Canadian (in French and English), British, Polish, Spanish (the original anthem, but it also got rusty so now I hum), American, Philippine and Chinese anthems.

I'm currently memorizing the South Korean, Australian, New Zealander, Belgian (Dutch, if not correct then it's Flemish) Swiss, Soviet, Russian, Swedish, Portugese, Mexican, Brazilian, Greek and Japanese anthems

So that's 15 anthems. Add the one's I'm attempting to memorize, then it's 26.

My only attempt at learning the other countries' national anthems is the Māori version of God Defend New Zealand, albeit only the first verse, so far.

The Czech anthem is really relaxing lol. I tried to memorise the tune of Slovakia’s when we were about to drive through Slovakia from Czechia into Hungary during a holiday but it was winter (so, slippery roads) and a truck skid blocking the road. Had the Slovakian anthem stuck in my head while I stayed 5 hours with the car not moving in a Czech highway. Oh, I also slept the entire way through Slovakia and woke up already in Hungary so I missed it anyways lol

Ja, only Stasi lmao. Auferstanden Aus Ruinen is 10x better than the modern German one in my opinion. Although they’re both pretty good

I use music to get a basic feel for the pronunciation of other languages, and I've had an interest in national anthems for quite a long time :p

Some I can sing are, beside the Dutch one, that of Germany, East Germany, the Soviet Union, the Russian Empire, Denmark (royal anthem), China, Japan, old South African anthem (die Stem), the EU (if Ode an die Freude counts) and (forgoing national anthems) the Internationale in Dutch, English and German.

It comes both ways for me :D because if I get interested in a language and start learning it, I might sometimes realise I’ve been pronouncing words the wrong way in the anthem the entire time

I know quite a few more historical songs as well, I’ve actually been learning those more nowadays but I still do both anthems and historical songs

I know the national anthem for back in Zimbabwe somewhat and I could probably bumble my way through the South African and Australian national anthems. The American one I can't remember any of it off the top aside from "bombs bursting in air".

Currently Singapore and Burma's, heh!

I know Singapore's anthem by heart now, after 8 years (2 years of Primary sch, 4 years of Secondary sch, 2 years of Junior College) of singing it every single morning.

For Burma, there is a longer version, but we usually stick to the shorter version.

Anddd.... that's about it so far. I didn't really listen to other anthems just yet, or might have forgotten about them.
