Re watching Geass.
Kind of interesting to see how much Lelouch wings everything and then pretends it was all part of his plan. :-p

Reading the premise suggests it could be good.

Adding it to the watch list. So, that's like 3 months or so to watch it.

Wow. After almost 9 years at this and judging from experience I always thought people typically began with mainstream crap, then turned into deepfags or hipster-like seekers of weird and obscure stuff for a while before accepting or becoming indifferent to the nihilistic Abyss of moeshit and CGDCT. This is the first time I see somebody defending shoujo school romances as the pinnacle of anime. I mean, I don't want to judge that. I'm just a bit puzzled and amused. That's really a first.

I started out with mainstream crap, still think most of them are pretty solid shows but they get shown around so much that everyone gets sick of them after a very short period of time.

That said they don't really compare to the amazingness of CGDCT.

Really can't comment much on the romance anime though. I just plain don't watch it much. Or If I do it's usually just a tacked on element of a comedy or some stupid harem show that barely counts as romance in the first place.

I think Clannad was the closest I got to that and I wasn't particularly impressed by it, but it was okay.

Read what's out of Kakushigoto. The tale of one dad trying to hide his lewd manga from his daughter.
I really need to read the Joshiraku and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei mangas.

Also watched Kemono Friends. "Still better than the new Berserk!" "CLANG!"
PPP is the highlight of the show though, that penguin has good taste.

I try to be judicious in choosing new anime, but I still end up mostly watching Cute Girls Doing Cute Things. Azumanga Daioh is still the pinnacle of the genre though. Princess Principal looks like it's going to be the shit this summer. Hyped for Owarimonogatari season 2 as well, hopefully there is less focus on "Who cheated on the math test?"

Hashizawa does not represent my political beliefs

The nation name and characters on my flag are not Chinese

This is a fascist nation
Explanation of the flag
The characters down the side are the characters of fire, water, wood, earth, and metal. These are the 5 traditional Japanese or Chinese elements and a central part in Hashizawan religion. The large characters centered in the right of the flag are the characters to Hashizawa. The three stars outside of the central large star represent the commoners, the lords, and the emperor. The large central star represents Oichi, the current capital. Red stands for blood, white for the heavens, green stands for the earth.

Sora no Woto is probably one of the best shows I've watched. K-On in the army however isn't exactly accurate.
Image
Okay so this isn't exactly accurate but you're in for a good ride once things pick up and it gets more serious. Also the episode after this one is about the MC trying not to piss themselves so it doesn't quite get past the SoL stuff.

Also I think Sora no Woto is the best example of world building I've ever seen in a 12 episode anime.
The action takes place in the nation of Helvetia which is located where Japan is but with geography based on Switzerland except for Seize, (the town the characters are station in) which is a near 1:1 copy of Cuenca, Spain. The people of Helvetia speak Japanese, read french and have a mix of European and Japanese culture. They're currently on the verge of war with the Romans who are a brown skinned people who speak German. As for the time period of the show, its set in the distant future long after Humanity lost an apocalyptic war against something. (It's never shown or said what exactly they are. The beings are Angel-like but they're never shown besides a brief split second reflection and a skeleton.) Since the war Humanity has climbed back up to a roughly WWII level of technology but the environment has never fully recovered and humanity is doomed to die of as it slowly gets worse. Almost none of this is explicitly shown but is instead gradually and naturally introduced or in some cases solely conveyed through the background.

The CG improves as the series progresses. Its never stellar but the rest of the show is good enough to get past it. Plus you have to keep in mind it was made by a whopping ten people not including VAs.

Leiji Matsumono's The Cockpit isn't as exaggerated as most historical military anime.

I actually have more manga to recommend than anime:

Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths by Shigeru Mizuki is a must. And it's semi-autobiographical too, based on his experiences in the Papua New Guinea campaign of WW2.

Seiho Tazikawa does a fair bit of military fiction, he's really realistic in his style too. He's done a short story about the Battle of Grozny and several other short stories about WW2 that I know of. And if you're still interested in fantasy or sci-fi, there's Who Fighters, which is about WW2-era experiences with UFOs and monsters in the Devil's Triangle.

Motofumi Kobayashi has made manga about the Vietnam War and WW2's Eastern Front, also realistic. Even Apocalypse Meow, even if the MACV-SOG characters are anthropomorphic rabbits and cats (not furries, realistic animals), but he usually represents people.

I think even Hayao Miyazaki made a manga of Otto Carius: Tigers in the Mud though he made all the characters pigs.
