I'm of the minority and unpopular opinion that Frieza is the pinnacle of his storytelling abilities and its a decline from there on.

Honestly I think if we’re talking about ending the show at a good point, Android/Cell saga would’ve been the ideal one for me. Goku showed a lot of growth as a character in those sagas, especially in how he worked and treated Chi-Chi and Gohan, it showed a lot of maturity for him, especially when he decided to stay dead to protect everyone.

Goku showed a lot of growth as a character in those sagas, especially in how he worked and treated Chi-Chi and Gohan, it showed a lot of maturity for him, especially when he decided to stay dead to protect everyone.

If memory serves right, at that point Toriyama had wanted to shift things and basically retire Goku and make the story about Gohan going forward. (Which is why Gohan had the big finisher against Cell in that arc.) Buuuut.... the fans screamed for more Goku, cue the executive meddling...

I mean, the Buu saga was fun, but it was definitely far more goofy than the previous few arcs, kinda reminiscent of early Dragon Ball with the greater silliness whereas the other arcs in Z tended to be far more SRS BIZNESS. I feel like Super tried to strike more of a balance between the silly slapstick and the serious stuff with... kinda mixed results. The U6 v U7 tournament struck a pretty good balance between the two, whereas in the Black arc attempting it resulted in mood whiplash something fierce and probably contributed to that arc's stumbling finish (I mean yes, Goku is an idiot at the best of times, but I have a hard time swallowing the notion that he'd be so careless about the situation as to forget very important items TWICE in rapid succession like that!) The Tournament of Power arc I think hit a really good balance, since that arc had several distinctive sub-arcs that varied in their seriousness and silliness to overall balance out... and that arc knew when it was time to shoo out the clowns for the grand finale.

Unrelated to awesome English covers of the music, apparently sometime next year we're getting a new anime based on the DB Heroes stuff-? I haven't read up too much but mostly I'm kinda "Isn't Heroes basically a bunch of fanservicey WTFery impossible/improbable matchups for shits and/or giggles?"

Hopefully this doesn't count as necromancy. I apologise to the mods and admins in advance if it is, I just thought posting in the existing thread would be better than creating a whole new one. If it's necessary though, I don't mind creating a new thread.

So! The Dragon Ball Super Movie is coming out on December 14^th and it's set to include Broly and (probably) Paragus. It isn't a sequel though, dear god no, it's a re-boot of both the Broly "franchise" and the character itself. Toriyama... No, not Toyotaro is re-writing Broly as a character, so no more will he be the crybaby-induced pool of rage that he is, instead he'll be an actual character... With depth... And perhaps a form or power-up that rivals Super Saiyan Blue, heck it might just be that overwhelmingly powerful... Like Jiren but with a backstory that isn't ripped straight from Naruto.

So, what do you guys think about this? I think this'll be great.

Given I was debating bumping the thread with this info myself, I got no room to scold for thread necromancy. Besides, it's relevant new information!

I'm... not really excited by this. Broly as a character and antagonist is one of the worst in the entire franchise, best cited with Vegeta's repeated cries of "But that's so DUMB!" in Abridged. He's not a character, he's a one-dimensional piece of indestructible cardboard with an idiotic background motivation and nothing to really make him interesting. Even Jiren has more backstory and character development than Broly does! The previous Broly movies are my least favorite after Tree of Might (and my hate-on for Tree of Might has less to do with the film itself and everything to do with the context in which I first saw it... repeatedly.... for years.... waiting for the rest of the Frieza saga...) So, "OMG BROLY!" does not inspire confidence.

On the other hand, the Broly concept could be made interesting. MasakoX has done that song and dance in some of his discussion videos. Just look at how people took to Kale's character in the Tournament of Power- she wasn't just Broly-with-tits, she was an actual character with personality and development, people could sympathize with her confidence issues and appreciate seeing her overcome that to get control of this amazing power. She was actually interesting to watch, and not just an unstoppable freight train of pain.

That this isn't a continuation or have any real relation to the prior Broly movies and that it sounds like this is going to be Toriyama's reboot of that character... it could work. At the same time though, it is such an enormous gamble given how inexplicably popular Broly is in the fandom in his current iteration. Even if this reboot of the character concept is amazing and interesting and well-developed into a full character, the fact it's a change is likely to invoke the wrath of obnoxious fans who'll be pissed because how DARE they change the character, OMG! Of course, it's still early days yet and we don't really have much information to go on, so I hesitate to rush to a judgement one way or the other.

tl;dr version: I am... cautiously optimistic. And will most likely still go see it in the theater if possible.

EDIT TO ADD: Also, the first episode of that dinky promotional Super DB Heroes OAV is out. Even going into that with extremely low expectations though, it was.... pretty lackluster. Still, for an 8 minute long promo OAV, it was amusing for what it was, though the much-hyped "SSJ4 GOKU VS SSJB GOKU" fight was.... not really that much of a fight.

From what I’ve been able to read about it, the situation seems dire enough that Goku could be pushed to the point where he needs to dig that deep, and I mean surely Broly couldn’t become strong enough to just overpower Ultra Instinct.

My question is, would Goku have to remaster it? Because it seems like he had to dig incredibly deep and be in this perfect state of mind to use the fully mastered version and it’d be odd if he was able just to instantly tap back into that cleared and focused mind frame

It's true.

Shueisha and Toei have been working for some time now on securing the franchise's creative future, so I imagine their creative teams will work from what was left. As for his other series, unless they gain some major traction they may just languish unfinished.

Personally I thought it was very funny. I don't hate it much myself, it was really good. There's even an unused filler episode of DBZ that featured the TFA VA's voicing characters who were dressed up as the characters they voiced in DBZA. They even had Ghost Nappa voice Mr Satan
