This is superb.

Wonderful episode, once I became accustomed to Baker.

It took some adjustment to get used to his... Bakerness.

I love it mainly because the way he and Romana speak is the same mode of speech that I do. Baker was one of if not the best Doctor for a lot of people. I always preferred Davidson as a kid, but the Bakers were close joint seconds.

Makes Mercy look rubbish by comparison.

When was the first time you saw Who? I stumbled across "Partners in Crime" but I didn't catch the beginning. From then on, I knew that this was a sci-fi show I was going to like.

I have never seen a whole episode of Classic Who before.

Also, have you noticed the banner ad for Realm of the Mad God that says, "if you blink, you die"? Sound familiar?

My first exposure to Doctor Who came when I bought Doctor Who and the Daleks at the school library whenthey were selling off some old books. I read all the remaining books in the library, and then went onto the town library for the videos. I can't actually remember which serial it was, but I do know that it was a Tom Baker one, probably featuring Leela (those were the most common serials at the library). The Second Doctor, Seventh Doctor and Fifth Doctor were also in the library, but Baker was the most common. I didn't actually see the first Doctor until they started airing the serials in advance of the new series.

Saw some references to it on TV, and decided to see if Netflix had it. They did. :)

They used to show all the old episodes as an omnibus on UK Gold when I was little, about...shit. 12 years ago.

I watched them, then went to play football (sigh, soccer).

Re-joining the discussing. I was randomly scrolling around to find a good sci-fi show at the time. I game across the BBC channel, and the episode "The Long Game" was airing. Checked the description, was interested, so I clicked the channel and began to watch. Was hooked as soon as the episode ended. Eccleston helped increase my interest in the show, as well.

I started by reading about Star Trek during one of the many, many day-long Wikipedia trips I take during the summers between school. I read that some British TV show lasted longer than America's, so I, in patriotic indignation, read about this silly thing, and decided it was trash and that all of the Brit's tea was rotting their brains.

I came upon it the first day of last summer, decided to be a bit more favorable out of sheer boredom and a need to watch something, so I watched Rose. Garbage, but charming, so I pressed on until the first part of the Slitheen two-parter, watching them on YouTube. When I went back the next day, all of the episodes were gone, so I just kind of gave up for a month.

I stumbled upon BBC America a month later and recorded Vampires in Venice, making sure to read up on the show's mythology so I could comprehend it. And the rest, they say, is history (until someone changes time).

Fun fact: Originally Doctor Who was going to have a cross-over episode in the sixties with Star Trek TOS, but it didn't make it past the writing phase.

Not 'just', the first came out months ago. And no, it wasn't a comic crossover, it was a TV show cross over, which beats the shit out of a comic.

I didn't know they considered it with TOS, I knew an Enterprise one was in the wroks though before it got canned. Star Trek crossover would be cool, except it was Enterprise so it would of sucked.

The middle eight is missing.
It is therefore an inferior arrangement of the theme.

Ahh, Androzani. Great episode.

The Trial series is excellent imo, but it does have the unfortunate consequence of Bonnie Langford.

Nationstatelandsville wrote:That was actually really bad, certainly the worst so far. Which is a pity, because this is the episode I was most excited about.

My largest complaint is Issiah. I hate that guy. Something about him was just so off-putting. He didn't have any sort of depth, he was just this fixture. A mandatory sheriff. And when he died, I completely gave up on the episode. I typically love the messiah-type, but he was just awful.

I also couldn't stand Jex at all. He was simply so grating. I appreciate the comparisons between him and the Doctor, I like the thought behind it, but it was poorly executed and his actor was just so irritating. I actually smiled when the Doctor went insane and tried to get him killed, if only to end my misery.

And the Gunslinger. Good God, I do love the concept, but his voice was horrendous and the acting behind him was more than mechanic - it was outright pitiable. Regardless, the character is one of the highlights of the episode. I like the little touches where he's shown not to be a machine at all. Jex's "something went wrong in his programming" line particularly struck me. It said a lot about the guy's sociopathy that he didn't even realize why the Gunslinger was doing what he was doing. I would, however, like to know why he was hunting based on a Mike Tyson face tattoo. That is incredibly, idiotically, incomprehensibly stupid.

The plot was boringly predictable, as was the ending. It does indeed raise an interesting question of ethics, but that is completely overwritten by the ass-pull of a conclusion - bullshit, Jex was not a good guy, and the Gunslinger as a guardian angel? He should have just committed suicide, it would fit the episode a lot better and might be poetic enough to salvage it. All-in-all, it felt they were trying to cram Western elements into a story about morality, thereby suffocating the affect the episode could have had. I expected a lot more from Whithouse, who has been rather good in the past.

Some non-writer complaints - the music was off. It was all "duel music" we'll say, the kind that plays during a confrontation. That hardly fits with the whole heroic sacrifice scene and, really, the entire episode in general. Gold's been off his game this entire series. The camera angles, meanwhile, were quite jarring and entirely unnecessary. The random cutting didn't raise the tension, it made me wonder if the cameraman was having an epileptic seizure. Amy felt odd in the episode. I didn't really like the way she reprimanded the Doctor, it felt off. But that was really quite small, the main cast was otherwise as perfect as always.

Things I did like - I love the direction they're taking the Doctor. A darker Doctor could be nice for a bit, but I don't think I'll be saying the same if this extends all the way to the proper series finale. I also quite enjoyed the back-and-forth between the Doctor and Susan, it reminded me of Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All.

"His name is Joshua, it's from the Bible. It means 'deliverer'."

"No, it isn't."

"Hmm?"

"His name is Susan and he would like you to respect his life choices."

The worrying thing is that, for once, I agree with you. Not the best episode ever, although not the worst. I did want to see the Doctor make the comparison a bit more clear - after all, he was a weapon himself, as far as we can tell, and so he had some awareness of Jex's position. Nonetheless, Susan was a great character.

My first encounter with Doctor Who was with the Eighth Doctor back in 1996 or 1997. My English teacher was educated in London and occasionally showed clips of the classic series and we would write about the episodes. I started watching the new series a few years later in America.

I saw version The Dalek Invasion of Earth, which had been cut into single TV-movie IIRC when I was a wee lad. Next time I saw Doctor Who regularly was when YLE started showing NuWho in Finnish TV.

I have never seen a whole episode of Classic Who before.

Also, have you noticed the banner ad for Realm of the Mad God that says, "if you blink, you die"? Sound familiar?

My first encounter with Doctor Who was with the Eighth Doctor back in 1996 or 1997. My English teacher was educated in London and occasionally showed clips of the classic series and we would write about the episodes. I started watching the new series a few years later in America.

May the gods have mercy on your tortured soul.
"Then I was fertilized and grew wise;
From a word to a word I was led to a word,
From a work to a work I was led to a work."
- Odin, Hávamál 138-141, the Poetic Edda, as translated by Dan McCoy.

I enjoy meta-humor and self-deprecation. Annoying, right?

Goodbye.
