Tonight's episode of Orville was pretty good. Hope the ending has something to do with next weeks episode.

Seth McFarlane didn't fail at making the next Galaxy Quest?

Color me surprised. The guy's been on a downwards spiral since they revived the rotting corpse of Family Guy.

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet but from what I heard McFarlane wasn't aiming to naje the next Galaxy Quest but instead something closer to Next Generation. Fox advertised it as such but its less full on Parody of Star Trek and more Star Trek TNG with some comedy addede in. He's got Star Trek directors doing directing many of the episodes and apparently it shows so far.

Don't get me wrong, I love Mary Sues, I think they're hilarious and make for interesting archetypal studies, but Picard and Kirk sometimes read like Ensign Sue.

It's not really the next Galaxy Quest, mainly because it's a bit more serious and inventive, it's honestly more of a Dramedy overall.

You see, he wasn't trying to make a new Galaxy Quest or ST parody, he was trying to make a show paying homage to one of his favorite franchises, while also putting a comedic spin on it, and it's working. (Too bad critics and some elitists are having trouble seeing this)

I think a lot of the blame lies with Fox. They've been trying to sell it as a new Galaxy Quest and setting an expectation for that rather than for what the actually is.

You can hardly blame the public for thinking it's a parody if it's been ADVERTISED as a parody, can ya. :p

I don't think it's fair to call Picard a Sue, but Wesley definitely fits that description.

Agreed. I still say the only reason the critics are bashing it is because Seth's name is attached to it. If he wasn't involved, I bet the critics would like it a lot more. I stand by my previous comment that the guy gets way too much undeserved hate.

The last episode was better than the first, and it had a very Twilight Zone-esque vibe to it, and I loved the ending. People really need to give the show a chance. I see it as more of a Dramedy than a parody.

They also seem to forget that Family Guy and American Dad were pretty brilliant.

Also, a lot of people don't like it because of the MC's. For example, a lot of... certain feminists don't like the 1st officer because they find the fact that she cheated to be sexist writing. Because how dare characters do/have done things that they're not proud of, oh the horror.

I gotta say, the second episode was much better than the first, which has restored my optimism for the show. I'm liking the way it's going, as some one said more "dramady" than sit-com.

The interweaving sublots are classic Trekian, but it's also got the lighthearted optimism of TNG and TOS.

I forget whic critic wrote it but they we're right when they called the Orville the true spiritual successor of Trek, rather than STD

My only issue with Orville is the tone. They really can't seem to decide between wacky space comedy, and serious sci-fi show.

In the last episode, I did definitely have to laugh when the ST alumna in the kinda-sorta ST spin-off show made a Star Wars reference though :p

The Orville is proving to be an unexpected gem. A comment I read earlier on Twitter summed it up as "The Next Generation meets Twilight Zone meets The Office", and I think that describes it perfectly.

I wish they didn't spoil that, but I'm excited. Mirror Universe episodes are always fun. Even the Enterprise Mirror Universe episodes were some of the best episodes of that series.

I'm just hoping for a Patrick Stewart cameo on Orville, considering his work on other Seth MacFarlane projects. What better way to pay tribute to Star Trek by having the man himself guest star?
