The Linux/BSD Thread: Make "Suckless" Suck Less?

Honestly, KDE, for how "heavy" it is, is pretty damn lightweight on my system. Better than GNOME.

I personally like KDE as well. Not sure about GNOME itself, but I tried Mint a while back and- don't get me wrong, it IS usable. But personally, I just like Fedora KDE, it won me over. Only with Fedora then Linux as a whole see more frequent usage, even a main boot on my laptop now.

Also I wanna ask something regarding the Kate text editor. Is there a way to make it behave like Notepad++ or Sublime Text in terms of unsaved files? For instance, say I had some rough notes, and then I closed the app. It would say "Unsaved data will be lost" instead of the other two just closing and then the unsaved work still there. I am not talking about closing the tab, that one is an expected pop-up with "Unsaved data will be lost".

And yes, anyone who gives a darn about what they are writing would save the text file, but sometimes, I just needed to copy-paste something in there and- you know, I don't want to save it, I just want it to be there for a little longer.

I do hope I make sense!

It behaves that way if you are using sessions (it doesn't do it by default) – best just make a (new) default session and enable "use last session" in Settings->Session.

Even on a computer that is almost decade old, Wayland compositors still run at about the same level as Xorg window managers, with very slightly more resources used. On i3 it has been using 13% of my RAM idling with Polybar and feh running in the background, and with Sway, it, if I recall correctly, has only about ~2-3% more RAM usage. Hyprland, with Waybar and Hyprpaper, idles at about 18% RAM usage. (Note that there is only 4GB/3.7 GiB of RAM on my computer.) I guess Xorg runs better on systems older than that. But I wouldn't know for myself.

I have an aging Sony VAIO that I decided to just nuke everything and put Ubuntu on it. Was way back in 2018 when I already got a new laptop and I wanted to use this old timer a bit.

I mean really old as in *"it only has one drive, which is a HDD. And you boot from it." Boot times went as far as 10 mins on Windows.

Ubuntu kindaaaa helped a bit, could have found better distros but I didn't know better back then.

I suppose since it falls within the general range, maybe a DE (and/or/with) WM poll? Probably would just end up with Plasma just blowing up everything, but may as well.

Idk if I really buy that Deepin is "chinese spyware" – what I do buy though is SUSE absolutely bodying them by saying they have an absolute lack of security culture.

Oh yeah, LXQT exists... ah well, I could never really customize it the way I like without somethin breaking, so it never lasted for me. Plus, if you want Qt you go for Plasma.

Thanks to my SSD dying almost exactly a year ago I don't actually have much I care about besides games installed that would need to survive a potential distro hop. Though it may be worth switching to KDE first but thats the NixOS stockholm syndrome talking

Honestly, if you are like me, who barely has anything productive on my HDD, well, you can be what I am: a Linux nomad.

To be fair, Arch is one of the most well-maintained distros that does not have software packages from fucking Mesopotamia.

I usually use Arch-based distros. I run Artix Linux on my computer right now, since I want dinit on my system without lacking packages like Chimera does. I have used vanilla Arch with systemd, and that has been the distro I've used the most. Only other one that I have daily drived as much as Arch is Gentoo. ArchBang is my backup OS on my SD card.

Apparently Artix switched from XLibre back to Xorg after one of the developers was harassed from the XLibre project for saying that there were serious issues with XLibre.

CERN is switching from RHEL to Debian for their industrial systems.
Cited reason being RHEL defaulting to x84-64-v2 for compiling – seen as "forced obsolescence" by the CERN crew. (SUSE did something similar for openSUSE Tumbleweed)
