I'm going to be so pissed off if they fill the 'Anti-Hero' role that they seem to be in, like in the Sontaran one. All 'Oh, they're too warlike and guns r bad!'.

The Doctor was a Real Dick in that one. I have a feeling Moffat may treat them better, not that Davies couldn't. UNIT was fine in The Christmas Invasion.

My Christmas wish is a Doctor Who, UNIT spin off.

Yeah, it'd only be one series before it got boring, but a shooty-bang explody version of Dr Who would be awesome. And by that I mean '6 ARs and 2 LMGs, with optional Snipers tanks and Rockets' shooty-bang, not the Torchwood 'Webley and Glock' shooty-bang.

Only if it's like UNIT UK. Better yet, they could turn the stories into the series/use some of the characters. I can just see big General Walmsley sitting behind his desk, shovel and dino gun in a display case behind him, scowling as the suave ex-Colonel Munroe tries to convince him to buy whatever weapons/services he's offering.

Fuck that. Theodore Roosevelt goes on an adventure with the Doctor and forgoes his rules against violence and punches the Weeping Angels to death.

All it would take is for an Angel to kill/try to kill a child and John would rip it's head off (it wouldn't be the first alien he's killed that way) .

Although, Theodore Roosevelt would be an awesome companion for just one episode.

That was actually really bad, certainly the worst so far. Which is a pity, because this is the episode I was most excited about.

My largest complaint is Issiah. I hate that guy. Something about him was just so off-putting. He didn't have any sort of depth, he was just this fixture. A mandatory sheriff. And when he died, I completely gave up on the episode. I typically love the messiah-type, but he was just awful.

I also couldn't stand Jex at all. He was simply so grating. I appreciate the comparisons between him and the Doctor, I like the thought behind it, but it was poorly executed and his actor was just so irritating. I actually smiled when the Doctor went insane and tried to get him killed, if only to end my misery.

And the Gunslinger. Good God, I do love the concept, but his voice was horrendous and the acting behind him was more than mechanic - it was outright pitiable. Regardless, the character is one of the highlights of the episode. I like the little touches where he's shown not to be a machine at all. Jex's "something went wrong in his programming" line particularly struck me. It said a lot about the guy's sociopathy that he didn't even realize why the Gunslinger was doing what he was doing. I would, however, like to know why he was hunting based on a Mike Tyson face tattoo. That is incredibly, idiotically, incomprehensibly stupid.

The plot was boringly predictable, as was the ending. It does indeed raise an interesting question of ethics, but that is completely overwritten by the ass-pull of a conclusion - bullshit, Jex was not a good guy, and the Gunslinger as a guardian angel? He should have just committed suicide, it would fit the episode a lot better and might be poetic enough to salvage it. All-in-all, it felt they were trying to cram Western elements into a story about morality, thereby suffocating the affect the episode could have had. I expected a lot more from Whithouse, who has been rather good in the past.

Some non-writer complaints - the music was off. It was all "duel music" we'll say, the kind that plays during a confrontation. That hardly fits with the whole heroic sacrifice scene and, really, the entire episode in general. Gold's been off his game this entire series. The camera angles, meanwhile, were quite jarring and entirely unnecessary. The random cutting didn't raise the tension, it made me wonder if the cameraman was having an epileptic seizure. Amy felt odd in the episode. I didn't really like the way she reprimanded the Doctor, it felt off. But that was really quite small, the main cast was otherwise as perfect as always.

Things I did like - I love the direction they're taking the Doctor. A darker Doctor could be nice for a bit, but I don't think I'll be saying the same if this extends all the way to the proper series finale. I also quite enjoyed the back-and-forth between the Doctor and Susan, it reminded me of Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All.

"His name is Joshua, it's from the Bible. It means 'deliverer'."

"No, it isn't."

"Hmm?"

"His name is Susan and he would like you to respect his life choices."
"Then I was fertilized and grew wise;
From a word to a word I was led to a word,
From a work to a work I was led to a work."
- Odin, Hávamál 138-141, the Poetic Edda, as translated by Dan McCoy.

I enjoy meta-humor and self-deprecation. Annoying, right?

Goodbye.

I think the hunting was meant to provoke an extrapolation on the viewer's part that the Kahler all have unique individual identifiers, as the Gunslinger also has a partial one on his face. Hence why he was able to be tricked by a number of people wearing Jex's mark.

I agree with you, the episode sucked. I liked the Darker Doctor and the horse bit, but otherwise it was just crap. You can't apply morals to an episode featuring the old west, there was no damned morals at the time. There's a reason why the Marshall were so cruel to the treatment of criminals, and that was because murderers and rapists were everywhere. And I felt that the 'crimes' that Jex committed should have been more harsh. He seemed like a tame Nazi scientist. I didn't outright despise him, I just thought that he was a dick. They should have made his crimes more extreme. Otherwise it feels like an odd conflict, as the Doctor's technically killed more people than Jex. Poorly executed. Shame really. Can't wait for MOAR Moffat. Moffat seems to be the only good writer this season.

Completely Agree. And Susan really was the highlight of the episode would find it interesting to make it a recurring charterer.

I think the hunting was meant to provoke an extrapolation on the viewer's part that the Kahler all have unique individual identifiers, as the Gunslinger also has a partial one on his face. Hence why he was able to be tricked by a number of people wearing Jex's mark.

That is still incredibly idiotic.

Random aside, but the idea of "the Wild West" is complete horse-shit. The West was exactly like the East, simply spread further apart. If anything, it was tamer. People didn't lose their shit and become amoral, gun-slinging thieves just because they could.

I enjoy meta-humor and self-deprecation. Annoying, right?

Oh yeah, especially considering it is still - for the most part - written for children of an age where their critical thinking skills haven't developed to the level that leap requires.

Depends on where you lived. The eastern West and the far West were fairly safe, but stuff like Kansas or Texas when first settled were dangerous.

Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P.

When even children can point out that the hyper-advanced cyborg-soldier-of-doom is being moronic, it is time to rewrite the episode.

Personally I haven't been impressed with the last 3 series. Did they lose some other writers when Russell left? Some of the back-up writers seem downright awful.

Well, the writing staff changes all the time.

Truthfully, though, a lot more of Tennant's episodes were absolute shit than Smith's.

I guess. The end of Series 3 *shudders*

But then he also had some absolutely exemplary episodes to work with, which I don't think Smith has gotten. He's had some decent to alright ones, a lot of mediocre ones and more than a few absolute rubbish ones.

The tone of the writing style has gotten darker but the age of the writing has gotten younger, for me.
