By Mercinda Denéux
GENEVE, GENEVA, NE
[blocktext][Editor: A week ago, we ran an interview that Mercinda did with an anonymous source in the Gaulic Foreign Ministry. There was a lot of response, from here, over our Western border in Gaul, in the Middle Waters, and beyond, in regards to what ‘Claude’ had to say about the Confederacy, other Madurin neighbors, and the situation, as it is, in Teremara, at the moment.
This week, she was able to arrange a meet with an actual named official in our own Foriegn Affairs Ministry to go on the record this time about evolving Neu Engollian foreign policy and how it relates to allies and neighbors. This interview was broadcast on NETV 4 in entirety, and in conjunction with our colleagues there, we are publishing an excerpt in today’s edition of the Gardel.

I met here in Geneva with Deputy Minister Lorenzo Blindauer in the Foreign Ministry to discuss events as they are rapidly developing in Madurin, and really how Neu Engollon plans to engage with Teremaran political allies and economic partners.
MD: Deputy Minister Blindauer, you had some choice remarks made out in public about what your colleague in the Gaulic Foreign Ministry said last week in regards to events on the continent of Madurin. Do you care to say anything on the record here about that?
LB: Ha!...hehe…Well, no softball questions tonight, eh, Mercinda? Right off the starting gate with that…Well, so…I will say that I think it’s telling that ‘Claude’, as you chose to call him, remained anonymous and refused to go on official record. I think that at most times, he was definitely parroting the official line from Paritte, but he definitely deviated at times during your interview, obviously...
MD: Deviated how, Deputy Minister? If he did, would it not be more in line with Gaulic public, rather than government opinion?
LB: Public opinion in Gaul is as diverse as their ethnicities and culture, so there’s no accurate barometer there. I think what you’re getting at…what you want me to talk about, was the statements he made about Neu Engollon. About our allegiance to the TSO, and our policy towards Austrakia. I don’t think that the Gaulic government as a whole is as concerned about how we deal with our Eastern neighbor as he seemed to be. There has been no official statement out of Paritte regarding our dealings with Austrakia
MD: Nothing significant has happened yet in regards to Neu Engollon escalating their involvement with Austrakia. Troops have not moved in…yet. So, no, there wouldn’t be any condemnation…yet, but there have been statements of caution from the rest of Teremara…
LB: Let me tell you about significant events, although I’m sure you’ve been paying attention, Mercinda, so this is for the viewers and readers out there: Austrakia is in full meltdown. Massive inflation; The schilling is in free fall…There are riots in the streets because of shortages of fuel and food; the banks are just about defunct. We have had a large amount of Austrak refugees pouring over the border into Teutonic Neu Engollon. The Roman Federated States, Espicuta, and Taranima have also reported a large flow of refugees from the Bundesrepublik…
MD: Again, we’ve heard very little about this. I thought they had a tight control on their borders?
LB: We think this is due to a lot of troops pulled from the borders to quell internal unrest. They are using border security units to do that. I think for decades we have seen Austrakians want to leave, but with more recent looser borders, it’s much more possible now.
Chancellor Kürzen has ordered a crackdown on the political riots, but really, they’re mostly just food riots. With the restrictions on foreign media operating in the Bundesrepublik, no one really knows for certain the amount of lives lost in these riots, or due to starvation, or to other causes such as pandemics run amok. I can tell you from what NESA has informed me that what is happening there is quite catastrophic.
MD: I definitely think the Neu Engollian public is not aware.
LB: No, aside from those in Grisbenden and St. Glaren, I don’t think many of our citizens are aware how dire it has gotten. And obviously, so close to us, this is a major security issue.
MD: So why is the government not being more transparent about what is going within the borders of our neighbor?
LB: Oh, we’re not hiding it! There is no blackout on these events. Simply people just. Don’t. Care. There are travel and business advisories in effect. We have mobilized more units to the border - The regular militia, Alpen Regiments, and yes, some of the DGC. They have alternately traded shots with Austrak border guards, and welcomed them with open arms as they have fled over the border along with the citizens they’re supposedly protecting. It’s pure chaos over there. And that…That, my dear, is why we are mobilizing for the possibility that we may need to intervene in [nation]Austrakia[/nation].
MD: I obviously would like you to elaborate on this, but first, why unilaterally? Why not coordinate with the rest of the TSO?
LB: We have certainly reached out to our partners in Madurin, but I think they are more concerned with events elsewhere, or not willing to do anything to cause further unrest. Austrakia is very volatile right now, as I have said.
While we’re on the topic, no one seems to have put up as much of a fuss that [nation]Terre des Gaules[/nation] (Gaul) has a whole fleet, regiments and squadrons embroiled in a war in Jaragupta, fighting off the ISVC, tens of thousands of kilometers from home, in the name of security.
MD: Well, to be fair, [nation]Jaragupta[/nation] is very close to [nation]Dachine[/nation], Gaulic territory, so that could be considered an immediate security matter for them. So are you saying that Neu Engollon is critical of Gaul’s policy in [region]Wishtonia[/region]?
LB: No, no, not at all. Not being critical. I agree with what you just said…Please, let me finish my point. So, we are very supportive of Gaul doing what they feel they need to do to ensure their security, even if it doesn’t concern us or really the rest of Madurin and the TSO. Which is the case here with [region]Wishtonia[/region] being a bit removed. It still is a security need for them, for sure…
MD: I don’t think they even approached the TSO about Jaragupta, even though they claim that a ISC/ISVC presence in Wishtonia is a threat to all of Teremara.
LB: Quite right they did not. And that is fine with us. Even though there’s an ISC presence right in Teremara with the YSR, but let’s stick a pin in that...
So…By the same token as Gaul acting in Jaragupta, We are fearful of Austrakia’s instability, while not as concerning maybe to other Madurin nations, although I think it should be for the other bordering nations…In any case, this will not deter us from acting as the situation becomes more critical. Even if our nation has to act unilaterally.
MD: That sounds pretty firm and determined.
LB: Oh, don’t get me wrong. Should we be able to solve this without a military solution, we are very open to that.
We have tried to talk with Chancellor Kürzen, or someone in the Austrak government, to be greeted with silence. I suppose it’s no big surprise they don’t want to talk to us.
They will take our money and aid, but not say thank you.
MD: Wait! We’re sending aid to Austrakia? What about the embargoes?
LB: We are trying to reverse them as quick as possible, but sending money and humanitarian aid while we wait on the Federal Assembly here and on UTEC to roll back sanctions just seemed more expedient.
Anyway, the Confederacy, since our debacles in [nation]Qasifya[/nation] and Northern Tavylria…
MD: So, Neu Engollon is skirting the sanctions that we proposed to install in the first place on Austrakia…interesting…
Also, I don’t think the Northern Tavlyrian War is regarded as a ‘debacle’...
LB: In any case, sending troops outside our borders, when we are much more adherent to the neutrality clauses in our constitution, as opposed to past administrations…We take it very, very seriously.
MD: Has the Confederacy approached any neighbors about armed intervention in Austrakia?
LB: Yes. At this time, [nation]Espicuta[/nation] seems most receptive to coordinating, while the Romans have a bit of a wait and see attitude, and the [nation]Taranima[/nation]ns are less inclined to get involved at all. Same with those to the North of Austrakia. They all do seem more receptive to lifting sanctions.
MD: There is a big wave of opinion that sanctions against Austrakia are what got us to this point, to begin with. Without the embargoes and other economic sanctions, the Bundesrepublik would not be in such bad shape and unstable right now. What does the Foreign Ministry say to that?
LB: The sanctions were put into effect to force a regime change, and I think we’re closer to that than ever. We would like to see the fascist Gründer Nationalistische Partei out of power, and it’s leader, Chancellor Heinz Kürzen. If the people rise up, that could happen within the year.
MD: And you wonder why he doesn’t want to speak with our government? A shrug?...I see. Let’s hope this gets resolved peacefully.
You brought up the [nation]Yellow Star Republic[/nation]. Yellowsia. They are still staunchly socialist and hoping to spread that within the region. They invaded [nation]Glisandia[/nation] and [nation]Jumnia[/nation], triggering the Northern Tavlyrian War. Neu Engollon joined the coalition to push them back. They have been building back up their devastated military, and also, seem to be moving closer to joining MALET (Mutual Assistance League of Eastern Tavlyria). Does that concern the Confederacy?
LB: Of course, but we feel that’s another area that Gaul has well in hand, without our assistance. They have a base there in Glisandia, and there are Gaulic and TSO advisors and troops in both Glisandia and Jumnia, and also, both nations are much better armed and prepared now than they were ten years ago, before the start of the War.
MD: And MALET?
LB: It seems quite natural they would want closer cooperation with their neighbors. It’s not so strange. I think all this suggested Cold War business with MALET is nonsense. We are economic partners with [nation]Falkasia[/nation], and to a lesser degree [nation]Gragastavia[/nation] and [nation]Skartok[/nation], in UTEC. We have good terms with them, we have been in joint Olympic Delegations with the Falkasians and Yellowsians and the rest of eastern Tavlyria. Cooperation in the region is at an all time high…
MD: Neu Engollians fought in a recent war against Falkasians.
LB: The Uli-Schwyz company fought in a war for [nation]Hutanjia[/nation] against them. By absolutely no means does the [nation]USG Security Corporation[/nation] carry out any foreign policy for Neu Engollon. It’s a private company with its own separate motives. I think we’ve made that clear…
MD: Yes, but Neu Engollian nationals, which the USGSC has a lot of, almost half its makeup…
LB: A little over a third are Neu Engollian nationals. The Confederacy has severed all ties with the USGSC and their personnel are not allowed on our soil, so…
MD: My point is, Deputy Minister, that public sentiment, having seen many native sons die at the hands of the Falkasian military, is not very favorable to them.
LB: A peculiar situation, but fast fading into history. Time marches on and former foes become friends.
MD: Before we run out of time let’s shift back to Madurin. First, [nation]Lacetanya[/nation] - ethnic Espicutans are advocating for a return to Espicutan rule. What is Neu Engollon’s policy on that?
LB: Easy. Same as we view Austrakia. Espicuta and Lacetanya both need to do what’s best for them. Both have been firm friends of the Confederacy over the decades. Both have very close, interwoven ties with each other. We feel they can work it out and if instability overtakes Lacetanya, then it is up to big brother Espicuta to restore it. Just like we see our mission with our own neighbors.
MD: Asucki is debating joining UTEC. Would Neu Engollon support this?
LB: hehe...Not in Madurin, but of course we would support that. Long gone are the days of the 'Pirate Kingdom'. Asucki is at a major crossroads between the two continents and I think it's high time they work on strengthening economic ties with the rest of the region. Hopefully one day they will join the TSO, also, but we shall see. We would like to be closer to Asucki, and their isolationism has been confusing and troubling, but hopefully they are resolving that now.
MD: San Rosito and Reino do Brazil.
LB: More complicated, but in the end, we feel they can work it out, and presumably peacefully. Both solid friends and allies with us and the rest of TSO. Whatever they need to work out, we hope we can help mediate. Several other Teremaran nations have offered, as well. It would be a shame to see the TSO torn asunder because of these ethnic and political conflicts.
MD: Reino do Brazil wants to stop the drugs pouring into the rest of Madurin. San Rosito feels that everyone needs to stop interfering with their business. Has Neu Engollon been supporting a narco regime all this time?
LB: The Council of Governance & Security, the San Rositan leadership, worked with us and the Royal Brazilians to put down the cartels. They have a lot of interest in seeing the drug trade stopped as much as the rest of Madurin. I know it wasn’t entirely successful, but it did some good.
MD: That’s highly debatable.
LB: I think that’s about it, yes?
MD: Yes. Thank you for your time.
