Honestly, I'm only scared of having my sig getting criticized. I've needed mod intervention twice now just because I added one or two more lines to the limit. Jesus. It's like calling in an entire SWAT team because you accidentally brought out an unpaid item from a store.

A) Sig edits are not considered warnings, for the most part. They're just there so we can track people who deliberately ignore sig warnings. After a few of those, they lose sig privileges.
B) your forum sig is nutty. This isn't one of those forums where you prove your worth by making it more complicated than anyone else. I do most of the sig edits, and I really don't understand the desire to post a frigging novel or movie poster after every single post. Link to a Dispatch so only people who want to see it, see it.

Bar the ever present concern of randoms that I knew getting modded and leaking my personal info, the only scary mod was Sedge. Probably because blue is the only scary moderation colour and when I started using these forums he was the only mod that consistently policed tech/GP. Fris I think was taking his year off, and Reppy only started glancing into GP super recently.

To the OP, like, if you do nothing wrong, you've got nothing to fear. You might get the odd red text if you have bad luck, but as they said earlier in the thread, most players get 0 mod warnings (afaik I've still got a clean record). As long as you use common sense you'll be fine.

Importing mods from other games isn't a good idea, mods should be invested and know a little about the game they're playing. Ideally mods would be exclusively put in areas that they had 0 involvement in prior, but getting them up to speed and covering gaps means that's not exactly a realistic proposition. NS moderation obviously could always be better, but it's in a pretty good place. Account rather than nation based warning histories (the requestable ones), and GHR histories (so you know that they're received etc.) would be ideal, but I'm guessing both of those are 5 - 10 years away.
As always, I'm representing myself.

You know, the fact that the mods allow threads like this to exist, and interact on them with us, sends a message about them.
They are people just like us. And while they, being only human, do occasionally make mistakes, they are trying to keep NS sensiblesafe.
I know there is the statement "If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear", but the mods are not Big Brother, they can't read our minds(Praise Be!), which does lead to some mistakes, but, overall, I think they do much more of a service than a disservice.

It's 6 AM here, so I'll post a lot more after some day-sleep, but here's one of the big ones right now:

Get rid of the "NS players first" requirement in certain cases. I've often thought about how many individuals came along that could have made excellent members of the NS staff, but the requirement that they be experienced as a player of NS first denied them a chance, because their only interest was in moderation. In these special cases, the candidate would have to have experience at an authority level at another website that NS staff believe properly prepares them for their service here, or be sufficiently vouched for by an existing member of NS staff.

I'm afraid I completely disagree with this.

Getting people who weren't involved in the community as players would just allow a larger disconnect between mods and players than what we have under the current system. I think some disconnect is unavoidable because that's what authority does, but I don't want to do anything that will make it worse.

Don't be afraid of mods, they are merely people like you and me, and people over the years have become very sensitive to the slightest remarks. Just understand that you won't be able to say anything and everything you want to say on this site (I know, it sucks); rather, simply follow the rules they've established and you'll be fine.
'Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.' (II Timothy 4:1-5 NKJV)

Seconding this. I have off-site moderation experience, but that does not make me a suitable candidate for NS forum mod responsibilities in and of itself.

Thirded. Having a dog in the fight, so to speak, makes for mods who are not only more invested in keeping the peace, but also are more concerned with the consequences of their decisions on the site. From my own off-site experience, I can also say that being a player first also helps in better judgement of things like what's normal snark/disagreement vs what's trolling and things of the like that someone new to the site might not be as able to accurately gauge.

Or to the contrary they already have an established long-running bias while new players would not.

Besides "larger disconnect between mods and players" fair enough to those who go to Issues and Roleplay forums but who was even the last mod to mainly post in General?

You seem stressed out, try to chill a bit. This much of fear from NS moderation is overrated, but all-in-all I'd say that it depends on their humor --
recently I've noticed more "friendly" warns and less official punishments -- and on what you post, i.e. post on the adequate forums and don't act like an edgy 12 year old. If this makes you feel any safer, my punishment log has been crystal clear for quite a long time and a good deal of my punishments were because I insisted in having a flag with a "fuck off" proudly stamped on it (still don't regret doing it :lol2: )

They literally banned our players from our forum for criticizing their business model (was that a polite way of putting it?) and then removed mod powers from an NS mod who unbanned them, on OUR forum.

Jolt was a fucking shitshow.
