Question about a specific rule

Postby Wiztopia » Fri Dec 03, 2010 6:48 pm

"Promoting illegal activity: Don't start threads describing the best way to get away with murder, rape, child abuse, software piracy, bombing the UN, killing the President, or anything of that nature. We don't find it amusing, and it puts the forums at risk. Such threads will be deleted. Egregious posters of such may be banned, deleted, or even have their ISP contacted. We shouldn't have to spell this out, but apparently we do."

How exactly would promoting piracy put the forum at risk? If somebody says they pirate something that puts the forum at risk? Wouldn't practically all entertainment sites be shut down if that was the case?

Absolutely not. Those kids are foul-mouthed.

You're making it ridiculously general. "I pirate songs" isn't what we're concerned with. We don't want any connection to anyone publishing a how-to or linking to sites that do, because we rather like the forums and not having its owner sued.

That was already previously mentioned earlier in the rule thread with this: "General classes of forbidden links include porn or other sexual imagery, warez (see below), sites promoting other illegal activities, referral links (see below), or sites that have links to such sites as a principal component."

The first one implies that even talking about piracy and saying you do it can endanger NS. Although if somebody does link to something like that I doubt NS would be shut down. I go to a website that allows links to download sites as long as the person doesn't direct link to the torrents and they haven't been shut down.

How does that imply that 'even talking about it and saying you do it' endangers NS? It says describing how to do it endangers us.

I'm not saying they should be allowed to do it but I did give an example of how it doesn't really endanger sites.

That's a gamble which is left for the site owner to take (or not). Seems the decision is to play it safe within reason, IMHO quite understandable. Feel free to start your own forum / game / whatever to discuss stuff not allowed here, and gamble your own hide on (possible) legal consequences.

As I said, the site wouldn't be taken down if they allowed it. It is up to them to not allow it of course. Also I already had a forum where we did that. It never got shut down. The only thing that happened to it was that it eventually died out.
