The Issue

Earlier this month, one of your aides stumbled upon a makeshift encampment of missing bureaucrats in the bowels of Terra. Their discovery has prompted debate on whether the government has become too large and unwieldy.

The Debate

"Is this the government or a damned shanty town?" belts conservative leader Josh Silver while slamming down his proposal on your desk. "We need to slash everything! Slash every department in half and rein this bloated government back in! Cut John Q. Taxpayer a break and ax our wasteful spending!"

Accept

"Now wait. Let's not be too hasty," cautions Jean-Paul Wu, your Minister of the Department of Housing and Urban Development for the Department of the Interior's Interior. "Sure, maybe the government is a teensie bit too big, but why can't we solve this with scissors instead of a hatchet? Let's appoint a Minister in charge of Governmental Oversight to examine our budget and see what reasonable cuts can be made. Trust me, Leader, you don't want to go axing such crucial departments without some investigation."

Accept

"What we have discovered is the bureaucrat's natural habitat," soothingly narrates renowned naturalist Nigel Verithorough. "We have visited this tribal community several times since its discovery and have made great strides in understanding their unfamiliar ways. What was immediately clear to us was that this community would never be able to survive in our world. In the name of cultural preservation, we must protect their environment - in this case, the catacombs of The Supreme Path's Capitol. Study and observe, but do not destroy, Leader."

The Government Position

What shall I pick?

It's the newest issue, so probably nobody except the author and the editorial staff knows any more about it yet than you do.
The Confrederated Clans (and other Confrederated Bodys) of the Free Bears of Bears Armed
(includes The Ursine NorthLands) Demonym = Bear[s]; adjective = ‘Urrsish’.
Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

I've been told by an editor that even though only one editor is listed for each issue, actually they often consult with each other... especially when one of them is the author.

Oh ye of little faith.

#490 The Long And Winding Halls Of @@CAPITAL@@
1. auditors are gutting every governmental department
2. the government regularly publishes lengthy reports on its own excessive recordkeeping
3. groups of government workers are declared protected tribes if they venture too deep into the Capitol

I love the effect line for option 2.

Thank the gods Gilliam didn't try to actually do this, but... The original opening for Brazil was supposed to show a huge army of bulldozers tearing down a rainforest; we'd follow the logs into lumber processing and eventually paper manufacturing; follow the truck delivering the paper; the paper into the printer; and what's being printed is an Official Report on the Sudden Rash of Mass Deforestation that's got the government all worked up these days, and then cue the fly etc.

Option 1 destroyed my country. taxes plummeted from 57% to 1,6% and average income came from $ 207.000 to $ 194.000.
This issue should've never been published. The chance they gave us to see which variables are touched by each issue we answer is just an evidence of how pathetic NS mechanics are.

The person in option 1 proposed indiscriminate and drastic cutting of government departments. What did you expect? NS has always been somewhat unrealistic- it's a parody of real life, for heaven's sake.
If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. | Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

Somewhat unrealistic? are you sane dude? You actually know what a reduction of $ 13.000 in the average income represents for a country to which getting it to 207.000 took half year?

You picked an option that said to cut everything, butterfly effects and all that.

Yes. It represents indiscriminate and drastic cuts in government.

Indiscriminate and drastic cuts, yes. But this utterly eliminated all healthcare, police and education in my case. I'm going to be working to counter this issue for MONTHS! Another issue for the dismiss-when-you-see-it list...

Yeah, taking the advice of a rabid small-government advocate tends to do that. They don't tend to care about the effects of their decisions. I mean, this is NS. If you don't like exaggerated outcomes, you shouldn't be answering issues.

I went for option 3 because it amused me, and because it seemed unlikely to mess up my nation's status quo. It had no huge effect on my stats - a small culture and tourism boost IIRC.

I went with option 1 since my corruption figures and black market were ludicrous. It was pretty effective in annihilating most of those, so the drop in everything else doesn't seem so bad. Side effect of having been a Libertarian Police State for some years, I guess?

I highly appreciate the great reducing of tax rate after I had chosen choice 1. :p
My people could now spend their money freely.
However, the skyrocketed black market make me upset, I will keep struggling on crackdown of the evil black market. >:(
ps. It shocked me that the tax rate fell from 57% to 12.4%, I could not either make a positive comment or a negative one. :o

Why the hell does reducing government spending and waste reduce the economy? Surely by cutting back, we're saving money. Went with option one, my economy dropped 20 points. Not happy.

1. Cutting business subsidies
2. Gutting every department leads to laying off a lot of people.
