When was Gatesville last a powerful region? In my whole time in NS they've either been on steep decline or rather dead...

2008, I think.

Edit: But arguably 2013.

Oddly specific question, but has USS Monitor ever had to ban/warn a CSS Virginia/USS Merrimack account, or has USS Monitor been the only ship-named nation on NationStates?

Not those two specific nation names, no.

Shwe Tu Colony wrote:has USS Monitor been the only ship-named nation on NationStates?

Not remotely. There are probably hundreds, possibly thousands of ship-named nations. I was looking at one puppetmaster yesterday who had three or four complete National Navies floating around.

Max Barry has never been a moderator. The site was originally un-moderated. There were a few admins floating around: [violet], [dredd], and [mantle]. I don't know if they did any actual moderating.

The first group to get modded was Melkor Unchained, Demoness, and Menelmacar. Shortly afterwards (maybe 3 weeks or a month) they were joined by several others. They included Amerigo the mod, Neutered Sputniks, TJHairball and Reploid Productions. All but Reppy have retired.

This is not directly a part of game mechanics, but who was the 1st person to come up with the idea of invading regions?

More of a History question than a Technical FAQ question. Post moved.

No one knows who the first person was, or what their nation was. That said, I believe the region FARK was attributed with the earliest successful raids.

Evil is often cited as one of the earliest invader groups. This would have been around Dec-Feb 2003. The Farkers made their appearance at the beginning of January 2003.

This was a few months prior to regional controls (banjection) and founders. So invading was very much tagging, spamming, and much “nah-nah-nah-nah’ing.”

Evil was the first invader group, December, 2002.

They invaded a total of 4 regions before they went mostly inactive as a small region. They went mostly unnoticed, because their targets were also pretty small and NationStates was too active in early region building and figuring the place out for them to stand out. Like most regions at that time, they were likely a small group of people who knew each other in real life.

They spelled the region name "eViL" or something like that. There were later, unrelated regions to use the name.

There was a trickle of player traffic between Evil and 100 Nations of Conquest, who were a larger, early not very successful invader group. 100 Nations of Conquest were best known, after doing a few raids and then becoming dormant, for taking credit for Farker raids. This allowed the Farkers to work in the shadows and 100 Nations of Conquest to take all the backlash.

Didn't a region much, much more recently call itself 100 nations of conquest?

Everyone I've met that had a Merrimack/Virginia-themed nation has actually been quite fun. I got a few joking TGs challenging me to fight them.

I’m new to this forum and NS History in general, so forgive me, as I believe this may have been asked a million times before. Who is Francos Spain, and what is Francoism? If any of you don’t want to explain it, a link to a previous iteration of this question would suffice. Thank you.

Francos Spain was the founder of the New Pacific Order, the government of the Pacific since 2003. Controversial figure, still follows their name to this day; their nation ceased to exist in 2004, though it was refounded for the NPO's 10 year anniversary in 2013. Might be worth reading through this.
Francoism is an ideology inspired by Francos Spain's policies, I recall it was made after Francos CTE'd. It splits NS into two groups- the Feederites (nations in GCRs, which means game created regions like the Pacifics) and the Userites (nations in UCRs, any region founded by a user), and says that the feederites should liberate the GCRs from corrupting userite influences. You'd do best to read it's manifesto, Proper Francoist Thought, it's much more comprehensive than what I've described.

I'm not sure if there's a way for someone short of admin to answer this best, but I'll take a jab. By iterating #'s in the URL, you can pull...

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4

and then it's like 5, and 12, iirc. 11 is not visible, nor are any other numbers lower than 11. Those could be threads in other sections hidden to us, ie mod sections, or removed. You can see that [v]'s first public post, for example, is in 14. Also worth noting that the lowest thread we can access, 4, has post #46 as it's OP (viewtopic.php?p=46#p46).

In other words, 11th thread on this forum is gone or in a staff section, is my bet. As is the first, if that was a typo :P

This forum, as you can see in those, is circa 2009ish, and there were others prior - but all archives known to me are partial and hard to navigate.

There have been three "first forum threads". One on the original, long dead forums. One when we moved to Jolt. One when we abandoned that pain-in-the-ass Jolt.

While I obviously can't link to the two dead forums, I'm pretty sure I can give you the gist of the contents of all three:
