[SUBMITTED] A Street's-Eye View

Postby Lindsay » Thu Mar 28, 2024 11:48 am

[Title] A Street’s-Eye View

[Description] Surmounting your previous expectations for inconvenient bipartisanship, your morning briefing is interrupted by an unlikely alliance of privacy advocates and … your own intelligence ministry? Before any formal statements have been made, you have deduced from a gaggle of interns struggling to connect your office projector to a laptop displaying a slideshow of blurry car-mounted camera photographs that this has something to do with Goo-Go Inc.’s latest expansion of its worldwide street view service to @@NAME@@.

[Validity] Valid for all nations with the policy “Capitalism”, and without the policies “No Computers”, “No Internet”, “No Automobiles”, and “Autarky”. Furthermore, the nation must have a medium or greater Industry: Information Technology score and medium or greater Civil Rights.

[Option 1] “Goo-Go is a multinational conglomerate based in the United Federation and must be treated as a foreign entity,” preemptively declares head of the ministry’s Homeland Protectivity Subdepartment, @@RANDOM_NAME_1@@, casting an anxious glance at the interns who have not made any progress with the machinery. “If foreign powers can view every square meter of this nation’s streets, we can forget all 1,624 contingency plans I sent to you last week…” @@HE_1@@ worriedly looks at the layer of dust on your fax machine. “...which you have read, correct?”

[Effect] foreign scientists have designated the nation’s borders as an event horizon.

[Option 2] “On the surface, Goo-Go’s photographing might seem like a compromise of state security,” giddily interrupts head of the rival Foreign Affairs Dossier Management Subdepartment @@RANDOM_NAME_2@@, who you thought was terminated last month. “But I’m here to tell you…it is! But there’s a kicker: the economy! We could only allow Goo-Go to photograph well-kept historic districts, the areas around national monuments, maybe even scenic drives through the @@ANIMAL@@ hills; the types of places we'd like to be seen online." @@HIS_2@@ pitch is cut short as @@HE_2@@ is escorted from the room by members of the Intelligence Ministry Employee Self-Correction Subdepartment.

[Effect] aspiring tourists can view their destinations from an astounding two angles.

[Option 3] Breaking the awkward silence is infamous lobbyist @@RANDOM_NAME_3@@, who you could have sworn represented a different group last week. “I speak on behalf of Citizens Recommending Awareness of Mapping Personal Stuff. As you can see,” @@HE_3@@ begins before realizing that the interns still haven’t prepared the slideshow. “Ahem, as you can imagine, most citizens do not consent to have our likeness immortalized online, especially by a foreign company. That being said, our I.T. sector greatly depends on Goo-Go’s services to keep our economy competitive in the modern day. We recommend a compromise: faces and other identifying features of private citizens must be blurred.” At the sight of Lobbyist Control Subdepartment agents blocking the exit @@HE_3@@ hurriedly adds “... as well as any government sites or activities that you would like to keep hidden from the international eye, of course.”

[Effect] foreign spies have made a fun guessing game out of censored images of @@DEMONYM_ADJECTIVE@@ citizens going about their lives.

[Option 4] Just as the last of the intelligence officials and privacy advocates had left the room after another hour of deliberation, the sole remaining intern had not been fired on the spot suddenly drops his dopey demeanor and stares you directly in the eyes. "I am a covert agent of the Intern Monitoring Subdepartment. It's difficult making ends meet when other Subdepartments soak up all of the intelligence funding. What if we just offloaded all of their jobs to Goo-Go? We could even let them go into people's houses, cars, trailers, you name it, and they take the public's complaints. Just a thought. Would you like a refill on that coffee by the way?"

[Effect] even Big Brother is being outsourced.

Any suggestions on how to trim down the length of the options are welcome, unless what I already have is an acceptable amount. The effect lines could also be a bit wittier. Also I'm unsure if NS issues already have a stand-in company for Google, but I don't believe it's that common for companies to have established substitutes as it is for RL countries and celebrities.

This is my summary of your issue.

Description: Some United Federationists are roaming the streets of @@NAME@@, taking photos of them to put on the internet! What should we do?
Option 1: Boot them - this is espionage and should be treated accordingly!
Option 2: Keep them, on the condition that they only photograph major roads and historic roads - this will boost tourism!
Option 3: Keep them, on the condition that they don't violate privacy - this will boost the IT sector!
Option 4: Frankly I have no idea what this does, not every issue needs a You Are The Dictator Option anyway

For Options 1-3, I'd hope that my summary will enable you to trim accordingly. Options are intended to briefly explain to @@LEADER@@ why they should take action XYZ - they are not meant to provide a comprehensive business case for doing XYZ.

I'd suggest replacing Option 4 with some radical libertarianism - we should send the United Federation photographers everywhere, in order to raise public awareness of what there is to do in @@NAME@@ as much as possible. The law be damned if they go on foot to enter people's houses and offices, or on ATVs to photograph farms!

I went through and cut out some superfluous sentences. The only one I left still significantly long is the third option, but I felt like the exposition was needed for the reader to understand why a privacy lobbyist would only suggest a partial censoring of the photographs instead of agreeing with the first option.
I reworked the fourth as well. I was wanting the incompetent intern gag to come full circle at the last option, but let me know if it's becoming a bit far-fetched. I think it's a reasonable possibility for it to be suggested by someone within the government instead of a libertarianism advocate or a Goo-Go representative showing up in the office.
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

If this is the first issue you've written, it's an excellent start. If this were submitted as-is, I reckon an Editor would probably pick it up to progress it (no guarantee, but it's certainly a promising issue).

Thank you! I was surprised that nobody had thought about a Google Earth issue until now. I'll submit it shortly.

Not every issue needs to go through weeks or months of drafting. There are loads of great issues in-game that didn't go through a drafting phase on the forum.
