Welcome to the 28th Handball World Cup

Handball RP Guide
Graintfjall's HWC25 OP is a good summary of how to RP handball. So, here it is, shamelessly quoted:
Graintfjall wrote:If you are new to handball, check out the WikiPedia article; you might also want to look at how things went in the last World Cup.

Rosters

It is a common courtesy to your opponents to list a roster, even if you do not plan on roleplaying the tournament. At minimum this should be a list of 7 players including a goalkeeper; the recommended squad size is 16 players including 2 goalkeepers. Otherwise you can include any other information you think interesting or relevant, from player descriptions to coaching staff, uniforms to playing style.

Handball does not use style modifiers (you can list them if you want to give a sense of how your team plays, but they will have no mechanical impact on the scores) and all games will be played at neutral venues so you do not need to list home stadium information (though you are free to do so).

Please include some form of RP permissions, indicating your preferences for how your opponents roleplay:
Code: Select all
If my opponent RPs first, they may:
Choose my scorers Y/N
RP injuries to my players Y/N
RP yellow cards / 2-minute suspensions / red cards to my players (bold all that apply)
Godmode scoring / injury / other events (bold all that apply)

Disciplines in handball are yellow cards (basic warnings); 2-minute suspensions (for more serious offenses); and red cards (full ejections).

Godmoding is considered to be unusual events that might rarely or never happen in the course of a game. A player scoring a goal with their weak hand is not godmoding; a player scoring a goal by bouncing the ball off a passing pigeon is. Judgment calls on what constitutes godmoding are best resolved between players.

Please read the RP permissions of teams you play against. If you feel someone has not followed your RP permissions, please try to resolve the issue between the two of you. Repeated violation of others’ RP permissions may result in a loss of RP bonus or further penalty. In the event of any irresolvable dispute, the host’s decision will be final.

In addition, DO NOT introduce pandemics into StrayaRoos, or cause serious damage to any infrastructure.

Groups
The groups were determined by 5 pots, 4 seeded by ranking, and 1 with 12 unranked teams, with StrayaRoos placed in position A1 automatically. Pot 4 featured the lowest-ranked team to enter the tournament (Cardenao) and three randomly selected UR teams

Welcome to StrayaRoos!

StrayaRoos is a nation in Anaia known for its problems with wildlife, drinking culture, and religious devotion to sport. Roughly 72.6 million people live across the nation.
Transport
StrayaRoos is primarily connected to the rest of the world by air, although ferries do exist to nearby Anaian nations. Domestically, there is a large highway system that links the entire nation, as well as the RooRail network, which connects the nation via High-Speed rail, or by older diesel trains. The three cities hosting the tournament are primarily connected by rail, mainly by the Salamantic Coast Line between Circunses in the west, and Acina Interchange in the central region of the nation, which operates every two hours. Direct trains between Zeal and Acina Interchange via Pale Central operate every 30 minutes off-peak, and every 15 in peak times.
Laws
StrayaRoos has strict anti-gun rules, where any firearm brought into the country will be seized at the airport and not allowed out of the nation. Apart from that, no other major differences exist between StrayaRoos and the rest of the world
Language
In StrayaRoos, a vast majority of the population speaks English, as well as a sizeable percentage of the 72.6 million residents are fluent in Dharawal, which is the nation’s most notable indigenous language.

Cities

Pale
Pale is the capital and most populous city in StrayaRoos. Located on the edge of the Salamantic Ocean, the city is known for its beautiful harbour and coastal areas.
Transport
Getting around the city is generally easy in the CBD and Southwest, where the games will be played, with either the suburban train network operating a train between Pale and Warana (the location of the State Sports Centre), once every 5 minutes at peak times, and every 10 minutes off-peak. The other option is the Light Rail, with the Pale Central-Matilda Park (where Pale Arena is) route operating every 8 minutes from 6 am to 9 pm every day. All visitors to the tournament will likely arrive at Pale East Airport, which is around 15km (10 mi) from the CBD. There is a suburban rail link to Pale Central from the airport that runs every 10 minutes.
Landmarks
- The Waterfront - Pale’s premiere tourist trap, with various 5-star hotels and restaurants lining the harbour, and the Pale Eye, a massive Ferris wheel that gives riders a unique view of the entire CBD.
- Parliament House - The houses of parliament in StrayaRoos include a museum detailing the nation’s political history dating back to 1889 when StrayaRoos was founded as a nation
- National Museum - This museum covers the cultural heritage of the nation, including various Emu Wars, sporting competitions, and the Roosian Music scene
- Beaches - Pale has various beaches around the metropolitan area, most notably Manildon and Nandiri, which are both 2km long stretches of pure white sand and clear water.
Local laws
Pale has strict lockout laws concerning Alcohol, where no alcoholic beverages are allowed to be served between 2 am and 3 pm from Monday to Friday, and between 4 am and Noon on weekends.

Acina
Acina is traditionally a coal mining town to the east of Pale, although the mines have all closed down in the past 20 years, and the town has started to reinvent itself as a tourist destination, using the tropical climate and natural beauty to attract visitors.
Transport
Acina has no railway system of its own, instead opting for Buses and Trams, which connect to the Roosian high-speed rail network at Acina Interchange Station. In Acina, the buses have been notoriously unreliable since a change in operators 12 months ago, so it is recommended visitors for the HWC use the Trams, which will operate a special service from Interchange to Sportspark via Convention every 12 minutes on match days.
Landmarks
- Breyua Coal Mine - formerly the largest in StrayaRoos, it closed down in 2009 and has since been converted into an underground museum and a park above ground.
- Acina Concert Hall - The cultural centre of the town, which often has a show every night.
Local Laws
Like Pale, Acina has adopted lockout laws concerning Alcohol. The Acina Regional Council also has adopted laws against smoking tobacco and marijuana in public places.

TERO AL DISCO'S ROSTER FOR THE 28th HANDBALL WORLD CUP
(Nickname: Teros / Comadrejas

After the football team participated in the 83rd Baptism of Fire, now it's the handball team's turn to participate in their own sport's World Cup. Spearheaded by captain and strongman Augusto Trevisani, the team doesn't have any lofty ambitions but they hope to make somewhat of an impact in the world stage as debutants.

Handball in Tero al Disco isn't a relatively popular sport in Tero al Disco. After all, it's a top-6 or top-7 sport, in comparison to the behemoth that is football, or other indoor sports, such as basketball, volleyball, or futsal. However, if you ask the average person who's gone to a public school in the country to watch a game, then they'll more or less recognise how it's played. That's because it's included in public school curriculums (along with basketball and volleyball). It may not have a reputation as a secondary school-only sport, but it still has few fans. However, reading from handball fans' social media that they're ecstatic about playing some of the multiverse's best countries in general sport.

TERO AL DISCO'S SQUAD FOR THE 28th HANDBALL WORLD CUP
Note: all players are male and all highlighted players form the preferred starting team.
Goalkeepers GK 1. Máximo Moretti (26, Laureles Moncloa, vice-captain)
GK 8. René Sánchez (33, Gimnasia y Bala)
Center backs CB 2. Rodrigo Toledo (29, Gimnasia y Bala)
CB 9. Eugenio Soria (26, Suraco Caamaño)
CB 15. José Vargas (25, Gimnasia y Bala)
Left/right backs LB 3. Lorenzo Fito (22, Nacional Terense)
LB 10. Orlando López (24, Hermandad y Patria)
RB 4. Lisandro Ricci (28, Solanet)
RB 11. Santiago Marcelino (26, Nacional Terense)
L/R wingers RW 6. Gastón García (25, Gimnasia y Bala)
RW 12. Ciro Davide (25, Laureles Moncloa)
LW 5. Augusto Trevisani (30, Chancalay Sata, captain)
LW 13. Bernardo Pereira (23, Laureles Moncloa)
Pivots P- 7. Silvio Da Souza (20, Gimnasia y Bala)
P- 14. Lucio Ortiz (24, Deportivo Lusitano)
P- 16. Justiniano Guzmán (23, Gimnasia y Bala)

Staff Head coach: Aníbal Schmidt (44)
Assistant coach: Felipe "Pacho" Gómez (37)

The team is led by captain and left-winger Augusto Trevisani, who observers have described to have a left hand "powerful as a tennis ball launcher". Understandably, he has led his local team, Chancalay Sata, to be regular contenders in the Terense handball league, along with players like Cristofer Vásquez and Ezequiel Vargas, who unfortunately didn't make the cut. His 195cm of height, and 97kg of weight, along with his great leaping abilities, make him a force to be reckoned with in the national handball sphere, and hopefully he pushes the NT forward this World Cup. His general talent is cut short due to his not-that-great pace, but he's certainly the star man in the squad.

Trevisani is accompanied by Máximo Moretti, the NT's main goalkeeper and vice-captain, who's famous inside Laureles de Moncloa for his aggresive style of blocking shots, running forward to save the ball, etc., along with his use of mind games to distract opponents, for example, in penalties. All that, has led him to become Schmidt's first-choice goalie. René Sánchez, the sub, shares mostly the same traits. However, the only way to make Moretti and Sánchez play together, is to get one of them playing as an outfield player, by which none of them are versatile enough to do so.

We're still in defense, as one of the other players I'd like to showcase is Rodrigo Toledo. Toledo also has Moretti's aggresiveness to play as a center-back (which is more akin to Schmidt's hard style of play that he's done at Suraco and Centauro (note that this doesn't mean that they just punch anyone in the face)), but he also has his tactical nous, from his experience playing handball, and he's a speedy lad, which helps the team a lot when they're advancing the ball. Youngster Lorenzo Fito's 22 years of age can also help them as he's naturally fast compared to the 29-year-old Toledo; and also right-back Ricci, who has already played with Toledo at Solanet, which helps their chemistry (yes I know my FUT).

The last stand-out player would be the first-string pivot, Silvio da Souza. With 20 years of age, this guy is already billed as one of the wonderkids (or he's too old to be called one?) of Terense handball. He's like a bumblebee with the ball. He might be small and thin compared to regular pivots, but he makes up for this by being really, really fast, which sometimes makes him able to trip opponents. As well as Trevisani, he's got a really powerful arm, which makes him look like a little demon when he's on the attack. Aside from his attacking capabilites, he can also block and defend well in general. So he's a handball all-rounder.

Now imagine these players but their skills are a little bit less exagerrated than I make it out to be, when they get smashed by the top teams. Cheers. Or what should I say???

Home kit: Shirt with three vertical panels: a gold one, a white one, and a maroon one; black shorts and white socks
Away kit: Black shirt with three stripes in the middle: maroon, orange and gold (as in Tero al Disco's flag); shorts consisting of a maroon, orange and gold degradé, and black socks.

SYLESTONE NATIONAL HANDBALL TEAM

THE 25TH HANDBALL WORLD CUP

Overview

After finally defeating Bollonich for the first time four years ago - and on their home soil as well - Sylestone have finally risen to the very pinnacle of handball. With a second- and third-placed finish in World Cups 24 and 25 respectively, to finally finish first was a massive relief for everyone involved. With a much younger squad, the side was not expected to do as well without the likes of Isla McCartney or Bianca Gotch and with losses to HUElavia and Gatchingerrak Union sending the Hawthorns spiralling to a 2-2 record halfway through the group stage, that lack of experience and extra youthful exuberance seemed to catalyse a remarkable downfall. Yet, it was not to be as the Hawthorns came back firing, demoralising both of those sides they defeated to finish first in the group and gain a huge advantage heading into the second group stage. Again, a loss to Bollonich made things tough as the side went into the final game of the round needing a victory over Abanhfleft in order to qualify for the semifinals.

At that point, something seemed to click for the Hawthorns, as it had in the first group stage. With only three wins needed to lift the trophy, they came out firing against Abanhfleft and despite encountering stocky resistance, were able to emerge on top rather comfortably. In the semifinal, Græntfjall were handed a seven-goal hiding as the Esportivans marched on to the final and a rematch against Bollonich. Despite taking a deficit heading into half time, the Hawthorns were able to completely turn it around as they took the lead again, running headlong towards their first-ever win over the Pavolan nation. A late charge ensured that it would be the case, sending the country into raptures as they came out on top, 31 goals to 26. The Handball World Cup was theirs and for the first time, so was the #1 rank.

Two years ago, however, the Hawthorns couldn’t quite get back to their best and defend that title of theirs. Don’t get me wrong, they came close, but a semifinal loss to the eventual champions in Græntfjall - another strong Pavolan nation - ended their campaign then and there, as well as their time as the number one rank. With the Bouncy Wolves not returning for the 28th edition of the competition for various reasons, however, the Hawthorns once again go into the competition as almost undisputed favourites as the highest ranked nation in the competition, ahead of fellow pot one nations Quebec & Shingoryeo, Gatchingerrak Union and hosts StrayaRoos.

A squad identical to the one that took the court in South Newlandia for the third Esportivan Sporting Festival is on the plane to Anaia; one with a whopping five changes from last time in Costa de Ouro. Two have been brought about by the international retirements of Amber James and Samantha Hussey, while Flynn Strange’s age has resulted in him being snuffed out of the squad altogether despite starting most games in Costa de Ouro. In their places, 20-year-old Wanderer Liam Montefiore will play on the left in the defence, albeit as an expected rotation player for Maya Windeyer, arguably player of the tournament in South Newlandia. Despite the Wanderers consistently finishing last in the Sylestone Handball Intranational Tournament (SHIT) - as is to be expected of a youth team - the fact that Montefiore and graduate pivot Alice Macleay have made this squad is a testament for the development program they have at Chamberley’s Institute of Sport, the largest sport-based university in the country and one of the most prolific in the entire world. Macleay herself has been given the role of filling the huge boots left by the retirement of Amber James, but has plenty of flair up top and has developed into a ruthless goal scoring machine. Also amongst the squad are three Pesfield Poopers, including two of whom are making their debuts on the World Cup stage alongside Patrick Barnsley. Madeline Bacon in the defence will be aiming to more than fill the boots of Samantha Hussey, while Daniel Grimley’s selection over Claire Raven on the left wing was solely down to Raven’s injury. He has an opportunity, though, and if he can take it with both hands, then it may create many more selection headaches in the near future.

The side will be captained by the experience of Lachlan Fosbrook, who has showed up for each Handball World Cup from the 23rd edition to date - something only three members of this squad have done. It could’ve been more, for Jonathan Younger and Ellie McKean are both still active players and have donned the blue and orange in the not so distant past, but their current form has seen the likes of Evie Allcott and Zane Ecuyer pip them for a spot in this squad. Sylestone’s key has always been in their teamwork, which has seen them overcome many an adversary in the final stages of a game. It worked in the Sporting Festival once again but with so many changes and so many players who are inexperienced with playing with one another, can they hold it together on the biggest stage of all?

LOS COMADREJAS LOSE THEIR FIRST EVER MATCH TO SARZONIA

Redacted by Ignacio Brunetti.

March 19th, 2024

And sometime it had to come. Tero al Disco's handball team had to make their debut in StrayaRoos. This time they were going to play Sarzonia (a team ranked #13 in the world rankings), so obviously they didn't that good of a chance to win. And that's what happened. In their first experience, Aníbal Schmidt's team lost by 29-21 at Pale's State Sports Centre, and is now last out of 7 teams due to goal difference. So how did it go?

From the kick-off, the Sarzonians, who were predicted to not dominate as much in this match in particular, well, dominated the match. Their left-winger (who I currently don't have the name of since it seems they haven't uploaded their official roster) scored the first goal of the match with one minute and a half into the match. Despite this, in the next attack for Tero, the ball slid of off some opposition players' hands, which finally landed on Ciro Davide, who then proceeded to equalise. That didn't matter, since by the 10th minute Sarzonia were leading 5-2 in a very closed period, featuring excellent blocking from their defeners.

The game then opened up a little bit, allowing room for more goals. Tero al Disco kept that 3-goal deficit...sort of. Actually, in the 20th minute the team were losing by 4 goals, but attackers like Trevisani, his sub Pereira, Da Souza or Ricci (who's supposed to be better at defending than attacking but anyway) started to wake up. I think the goal of the match, at least for us, was when Ricci thought that it was a great idea to throw the ball at goal from 15 metres out. It bounced off the crossbar and then did so off the Sarzonian goalkeeper's back. Too bad for him, because when he scooped it out of the goal, it had fully crossed the line, and the refs gave us a goal. But in the last 10 of the half, the Sarzonian attack got better and better. That included their center-back, who ended up with a tally of 4 goals in the first half, as the Stars (as is their nickname I think?) were 18-12 up going into the break. The (approximately) 1.800 Terenses out of the (approximately) 3.500 people in the 5.000-capacity Sports Centre were cheering, but they weren't doing so hard enough.

In the start of the second half, there seemed to be a glimmer of hope for the Comadrejas, as from the original 18-12, Trevisani, Ricci and García all scored to put the match 15-18 with 35 minutes gone. And there were more attacks going, but little by little the Sarzonian defense started to rebuild up, and that's how Tero al Disco's boost started to slow down. It kind of went back to square one, and some minutes later the Stars were back on track, having control of the game against the Terense underdogs. By the 45th minute of the match, Sarzonia led 24-17 (Trevisani and Da Souza scored those two extra goals).

As full-time was approaching, it was clear the match was going in favour of Sarzonia. They were slowly stretching the lead, one goal at a time. On a sidenote, the save of the match definitely was when a shot from a Sarzonian winger bounced over Moretti's head, was definitely going into goal but Toledo punched it out. But that didn't matter anyway. It didn't close the lead that Sarzonia was having. Players like Fito or Ricci may have scored more goals, but when the clock reached 60 minutes, the game had ended. It was Sarzonia 29, Tero al Disco 21.

I had the chance to personally interview the captain Augusto Trevisani. He said the obvious: "well, this match was and...the competition in general is going to be a learning experience, like all first times. Obviously we weren't going to win, to pull an upset on them.", and the stuff you expect to hear when you (or your team in this case) have your first experience gone wrong.

Now onto something more serious, in other words Aníbal Schimdt's press conference, he said similar stuff as Trevisani, although he added that "we hope to win against the smaller, unranked teams to hopefully have a chance at going onto the round of 16. However, I believe that the whole team could've performed better. And that I as the manager, and the coaching team, we need to train the guys better to complete the objective I've said before...to beat the minor teams."

Next round we'll play against Weditch, and then the next day against Oclea. Both unranked teams.

That was what Schmidt was referring to.

Will Tero be the best of the four unranked teams, and finish in the top 4 of group B? Only time will tell...

NATIONAL HANDBALL TEAM

This is the thirteenth time that Abanhfleft will be participating in an international handball tournament. Handball is quite an obscure sport in the Democratic Republic, with no professional league established, and the handball department in the Commission on Sports and Games started out as just two men working out of a plastic table, but thanks to rising interest in the sport, not only was the Commission able to finally establish a handball league in the country but the Commission itself is now ten strong and has two tables in their expanded "office". But as always, the national team's objective remains the same as it has always been: win the bloody thing.

EDSMONTIK VS LITHLAND MATCHDAY 1
ACINA NETBALL & BASKETBALL STADIUM
MARCH 19TH, 2024

NOTE: THIS IS EDSMON POINT OF VIEW

PRE-GAME
"Wow, the stadium is huge."
The Edsmon players enter the stadium, walking towards their locker room. The Lithland players can also be seen walking to their room.
"Today is the day." The coach of Edsmontik, Jerald Bervine, begins. "Today is the day we show that we can make it through international competitions."
As usual, a long speech starts, motivating the players. Meanwhile, on Lithland's side, similar things occur.
The team goes over some training exercises; passing, shooting, and dribbling.
Bervine then goes on to explain their game tactics, how they will pass, and how they will play.
Not long later, an official comes in to alert the team that the match will be beginning.
Jerald Bervine sets his team up in a line, and they walk out towards the entrance to the court.

GAME BEGINNING
As the players walk out to the court and take their positions, the commentators states the players on each team.
"On this day we are joined by both Edsmontik, and Lithland. Both teams consists of these 7 players, along with the substitutes who will be on the bench."

GAME STARTS
Within the first minute, passes are being made. Edsmontik passes slowly upward, yet retracting back when noticing the others approaching.
"it was like keep away, but with more people. Reminds me of the school game Khaj" Movkenbakken Dichen says in a post game interview.
Players like Demener, and Dom-Massa were working their way to intercept the ball. They formed lines of defense and altered their positions in certain situations.
It was a passing game until the 5th minute, when an opposing player throws the ball straight at the goal.
Neinen, the goalkeeper of Edsmontik, dove straight for it. But he only touched the ball ever so slightly before it flew in. 0-1, Lithland was in the lead.

10TH MINUTE
By the tenth minute, a lot had changed. Fredreich, the right winger on the Edsmon team, had gotten a leg injury in a collision with another player. He was subbed out and replaced by Daen Yjoger. However, Edsmontik had pushed the score back, leaning onto Lithland now, at 6-5. Players were rushing left and right trying to find open areas for passes.
"Dom-Vaartan has it, he throws... OHHHHHH GOAL!!!!" the commentator screams, making people flinch at their televisions back at home.
7-5 was the score, and it was just the 14th minute.

PRE-HALFTIME
The game was slowly nearing halftime, at the 27th minute, when Lithland makes anoher pass and shoots in. However, Edsmontik is already in the lead, 18-15.
Coach Bervine is more than ready to sub in players. He wants the team to be energized at every moment.
Players passed to eachother, accidentally giving up possession and then gaining it back.
By the 29th minute, both teams were moving up a few goals, the score now being 21-17
However, Edsmontik wasn't giving up, and had Veyer score 3 more goals in 4 minutes, pushing the score to Edsmontik 24, Lithland 17.
The halftime whistle blows, and player rush towards their coaches.

POST-HALFTIME
After a few lectures from their coach, and some water, the team heads back out to the court, ready to play.
The game starts back up again, and players rush to positions, and look for open spaces.
"Here, here!"
"Pass it, pass it!"
Players call for passes, and eventually the scores change again.
By the 40th minute, the score is 26-19, with Edsmontik pushing HEAVILY against Lithland.
They were told by their coach to use the opposition's low energy to their advantage.
By this time, most players have subbed out, and the subsitutes have dropped in, performing well.
Lithland hits a goal in, bringing the score to 26-20.

LAST MINUTES
"Those last ten minutes were the most stressful of my career." Vek Seye tells a reporter after the game. "So many passes and shots from the enemy, I thought we would lose it."
He was not wrong.
Lithland, wanting to not lose their game, tried as much as they could to score, and eventually the score rose from 26-20 to 27-23.
Edsmon players were beginning to realize that Lithland could equalize the game in a few goals, yet there were only 6 minutes left.
Rushing in quickly, Saz-Maartin shoots in 2 goals, bringing it up to 29-23.
He's followed not too long after by Yjoger, and a lucky shot from Dichen, but the Lithlandian players bring in another goal.
31-24.
It's the 58th minute. There's barely any time left.
Lithlandian players are not showing signs of giving up, but seem to know that it is a lost game.
One last shot from Demener, and the game whistle is blown, 32-24, Edsmontik have won.
It's the first ever international win for Edsmontik.

Ignore the references to previous tournaments. I'm in a little bit of a hurry these days.

Quebec and Shingoryeo Men's and Women's National Handball Teams - HWC 28

The Quebecois Handball Federation (QHF), in continuation of its practice also shared by Royal Quebecois Volleyball Federation (RQVF), Basketball Quebec (BQ) and Royal Quebecois Football Association (RQFA), is proud to continue its practice of sending mixed teams with expanded rosters to international competitions. In regards to their opponents' preferences to play the men, women or mixed teams, will remain flexible in advanced consultation with their opponents (OOC: go ahead and ask me).

HANDBALL IN QUEBEC AND SHINGORYEO

Handball is the number one summer indoor sport in Quebec and Shingoryeo, a spot it comfortably holds with packed stands. While the sport itself doesn't hold the 30,000+ crowd the gridiron or baseball matches normally get, the relative accessibility of handball more than cover such deficiency. Quebec and Shingoryeo does have a 3-tier, dualsex pyramid for handball, with the 14-team Ligue-Boreale at the very top of the pyramid.

Unfortunately, the international results for the Quebecois national teams have yet to really reflect their popularity. Following the double gold at Nassau Bay-Centralis, the three-decade long (and ongoing) dispute between Quebecois Handball Federation, the Players Association, and the Ligue-Boreale, had meant that the Quebecois national teams rarely entered over last three decades, if ever, with a full squad, with many refusing to participate internationally over last thirty years. Fortunately, the recent cycles' improvements, highlighted by the double gold at home in Twin Cities eight years ago, as well as the last HWC runner-up appearance, would suggest that there is lot more to look forward down the line.

STYLISTICS

Stylistically, Team Quebec distances itself from the usual style of brutal physicality found in other sports. Both men and women are finesse and speed-driven, preferring to overlap and pass a lot before finding lots of opportunities, which makes sense given their relatively shorter height. The team's ability to come up with endless combinations, thanks to its strengths on the most important position in centre back, is what's going to make this team hard to play against. They will try to stay as flexible as possible on positionality between the backs, where they do enjoy a relatively better depth than on the wings, and on right side of the court. That is what they will use in order to overcome deficiencies on height and also on wing play.

Unfortunately, they are somewhat weaker on wingers though they rely a lot on wing play, and the relative imbalance between the left and the right side of the attack is what the Quebecois need to fix as well. The goalkeepers, for most part, are pretty good, occasional troubles on the empty net aside. Oh, and whether they succeed or fail on a match-to-match basis will really come down to how many turnovers they can produce- those they will probably have to work bit more off.

Thus, expect them to try scoring from the sides than the centre, though if they do so up the middle, they will be going for 9m shot instead of a 3m shot or even 7m shot. Empty goal situations are always good for them as well. They will convert turnovers too, as long as they can get enough of them...

The Team

Head Coaches: Jean-Francois Maher, 52 - Radmila Đokić, 54
Assistant Coaches: Henri Petitpa, 38 - Noh Pil-Heui, 39

Player-Coach: RW Chelsea Lee Hannigan, 38
Team Captains: CB Alain Bouzaid, 34 - LW Ellergy Halgorsen, 31

Major turnovers and significant time between the two HWCs, which have also included lackluster finishes at the 17th Summer Olympics off an aging core, had led into a slightly different-looking national team than in past years. The team features a young goalkeeper duo of Oh Ji-Seon and Anne-Marie Nadon, who will be expected to alternate starts and even periods during the game, but is otherwise still trying to gel and figure out their primary options on hand.

On the backs they are probably the safest, with continued strong talent depth there, best known by aging, top-class centre-back in Alain Bouzaid and a fiery, streaky right back as primary option in Baek In-Yeong. It is also safe to expect that wo-pivot options, with veteran Isaiah Goh-Lewis and Jean-Luc Clevenot, be run to stabilise the team's tempo. Wings, on the other hand, remain a bit of question mark with a veteran-ladden left wing of Mark Eller and Ellery Halgorsen contrasted by Chelsea-Anne Hannigan's age and Mathisse Cardoza's tendency to foul too often.

WEDICH (WEDITCH) VS OCLEA MATCHDAY 1
PALE EXHIBITION CENTRE
MARCH 19TH, 2024

NOTE: THIS IS WEDICHIAN POINT OF VIEW
(Wedich is the secondary nation of Edsmontik, so RP styling will be similar)

PRE-GAME
The Pale Exhibition Centre was going to be the place where Wedich (Weditch) would be playing their first game.
Oclea was an unranked naion like them, but according to coach Verker Suiozxecaft, they had the upper hand.
Not only did they train alongside the pretty powerful Edsmon team at one point, but they WERE the Edsmon team.
However, following Wedich's call for independence, many players chose to follow their home island.
The players walk into their locker rooms, and get ready for Suiozxecaft's review.
The team, as usual, goes over techniques and talk about how to properly throw, intercept, and dribble.
But eventually, it is cut short by a man in a HWC staff shirt, who alerts them about the game's beginning.

GAME BEGINNING
Players take their positions, and quietly remind eachother about a game strategy.
Meanwhile, the commentators talk about the team lineups.
"Welcome here, at the pale Exhibition Centre, this lovely morning we will have Wedich, or Weditch, in some nations, against Oclea. Both are unranked nations, and lets see their lineups.

GAME STARTS
The referees give the signal, and after winning the coin toss, Wedich goes first. The players rush around, catching, passing, dribbling and shooting at the net.
Eventually, Quevek makes a throw that curves the ball and smacks it into the net. GOAL for Wedich! 1-0 in the first minute, Wedichians have the luck all on their side.
But the luck runs out, and in the 6th minute, Oclea comes back with two goals from [unnamed pivot] and [unnamed left winger].
"The ball was hard to catch, Oclean players are seriously good throwers." states Neosen III, the goalkeeper of the team in a post-game interview.
By the 10th minute, the score isn't on Wedich's side, at 5-7, with Oclea in the lead.

10TH-20TH MINUTES
"LETS GOOOOOO!" Junor Jr. cheers while rushing after scoring the equalizer for Wedich.
With a powerful throw on minute 13, he got the score to 9-9. With this tied game, things were starting to look up for Wedich.
Since Oclea's right winger and pivot got injured, they had to be subsituted by "less professional" (according to Vaulkwell) players.
Wedichian defense has a little easier time defending, holding back and intercepting many shots.
The ball is passed up, passed down, and then shot at the goal many times.
At the 17th minute, Wedich hits 13-10 in score.
However, luck runs out for Wedich, as Neosen III is injured by a hard shot to the face and a bit of bad reaction time. The game pauses for a bit as Ovpakt Cedrarcalloustemakt comes in to substitute Neosen III.
The game plays on, and soon Wedich finds themselves nearing the halftime mark with a 15-11 score.

JUST BEFORE HALFTIME
The Wedichian players push on, subbing in new players when needed.
More goals are scored, and it becomes a tight race between Oclea and Wedich.
16-13 on minute 21,
17-15 on minute 22,
23-18 on minute 26,
and eventually, halftime occurs while the score is 23-19.

POST-HALFTIME
Even after their rest and water, the players were growing more tired every minute.
Yet they refused to give up and let the Ocleans pass them.
One push, and another. Suiozxecaft watches nervously as the Wedichians concede again.
They were now nearing loss, at 24-21. The Ocleans were close on their tail, and they couldn't give it up that easily.
Goal after another, Moltensa then Fotser, then Junor Jr. again.
The score pushed itself up to 29-23 at minute 47. The Wedichians were nearing the end of the game, and they were going to end it with over 30 goals. They knew they would.

FINAL 10 MINUTES
"It's unforgettable really, how stressful that was." Letkiinet says after the game to a reporter for International Sports Channel 19. "The last minutes we we tired, and nervous that the other team would take advantage.
On the 51st minute, Oclea had sent themselves to 29-25, trying to catch up. But Wedich remained a brick wall in their face.
By minute 54, Wedich reached their goal. De-Jeusk smacks in a powerful shot and celebrates at the corner of the court, as his team chant along with him.
Wedich had reached their goal of getting 30 goals in one match.
However, it wasn't over yet, the game still had 6 minutes plus extra time for the injuries and penalties.
Eventually, after a +4 mins extra time, the game ends, and Wedich wins, 31-25.

Gatchingerrak Union of Rushmori nations, shortened as the Gatchingerrak Union, is a cultural and political alliance of four countries of the Quebecois Commonwealth located in mid-southern Rushmore (Norrskie Zasousti, Norrehavn, Gatchinovo and Novopetrograd). The three kingdoms and the citystate, while independent nations of own, do have the Gatchingerrak Union as a way to establish their common zone, where their main goals are to advance cooperation in military, cultural, economic and energy matters. It shares land border with Vaugania and Norrhem to the west, while bits of the east touch Phoenigetzusta. The combined population of the union are estimated to be around 81 million.

While its trio of nations have always fought with one another for centuries, Gatchingerrak Union is a culturally diverse nation with growing importance outside to that of the Quebecois Commonwealth. Its population is ethnically diverse, with the eastern, Novopetrogradian half of the realms primarily Slavic, while the Western half is divided to primarily Nordic Norrehavn on north and slavic Norrskie Zasousti on the south. Somewhere in middle of the lake, which faces all of the three nations, stands the island that is nowadays known as the citystate of Gatchinovo, the ancient place known for its significance on trades and diplomacy among the Rushmori realms of the Quebecois Commonwealth. It is where the Accord between the 4 states were signed in year 2030 (around the time of WC78), to promise co-prosperity among the rivalling states whose cooperation is needed more than ever. Its economy is a mix of natural resources and heavy manufacturing for it.

EDSMONTIK VS THE VALHALLAN UNION MATCHDAY 3
ACINA NETBALL & BASKETBALL STADIUM
MARCH 21ST, 2024

NOTE: THIS IS EDSMON POINT OF VIEW

PRE-GAME
"Being back at this Acina stadium really gave me good vibes." Saz-Maartin says. "We won here last time, and I just knew we would do good again."
The Edsmon bus parks beside the Valhallan bus, and both teams walk into the stadium via a special entrance.
The players walk into their respective team locker rooms, and sit with the coach.
"We once again find ourselves at the Acina Netball & Basketball Stadium. And today, we will prove we are the masters of the court, once again. Since we didn't have any games for MD2, we fell. So now, it's time we rise back up to the top of the board."
The Edsmon players cheer, and quickly discuss tactics before being called to enter the court.
Jerald Bervin sets them up, and they walk out.

GAME BEGINNING
The commentator of the match, Daaren Lithcaust, tells viewers about the game as the players position themselves.
"Welcome, welcome, today, the two nations here are ready for MATCHDAY 3! It's Edsmontik here, unranked as of now but they are going against the also currently unranked Valhallan Union! Let's see their lineups!
Starting Lineup

GAME STARTS
Winning the coin toss, Edsmontik prepare to pass. Veyer has a more unusual start, passing backwards to Dom-Massa, who passes to Dichen.
"They had a reason behind calling me Mjakre Movkenbakken. It means Mighty Movkenbakken." Dichen says.
After 3 steps, he makes an extremely powerful throw, which flies and smashes luckily into the post then into the net.
The goalkeeper tried to dive for it, but barely touched it.
Dichen cheers as he and his team run around to celebrate, 1-0 in the 1st minute.
In the following minutes, Edsmontik busted in a few more shots from Veyer, and Fredreich, who had been injured.
Eventually, the score hopped up to 4-1, with Edsmontik leading.

10TH MINUTE
Edsmon players continued to push forwards, but it all sort of fell into a stalemate on the 6th minute after The Valhallan Union gained 3 more goals, having the score tied at 4-4.
Both teams pushed, then lost the ball, then gained it back, then pushed, the lost the ball, over and over and over again.
"It was the most boring show from the 6th minute to the 14th minute. Then it got good." Coach Bervine tells reporters.
And indeed it did get good, Edsmontik and the Valhallan were scoring multiple goal, moving more and more.
It was 5-6 in the 16th minute,
9-8 in the 18th minute,
Then 14-13 in the 20th minute.
It was a shift back and forth, with the goal difference staying at around 1.
Eventually, at the 21st minute, something occurs.

PRE-HALFTIME
Just before halftime, Edsmon players get a streak of luck. The Valhallan players are starting to wear out, slowing down and not being super accurate.
The players push forward, scoring goal after another.
Veyer, Saz-Maartin, Yjoger, and more score multiple shots, and the goalkeeper could do nothing but try their best.
However, Neinen did concede a few goals, diving a little too far or getting juked by players.
The score reached 20-17, with Edsmontik in the lead around the 26th minute.
Things were looking well, and eventually, the halftime whistle blows.
The Edsmon players rush to Coach Bervine, who congratulates them for their hard work in the first half.
Now, they had to deal with the second half.

POST-HALFTIME
"GOAL!!!! WE GOT ANOTHER ONE IN FROM EDSMONTIK FOLKS, WILL VALHALLAN CATCH UP?" the commentator shouts, watching as Dom-Varttan shoots a goal in.
The score was 22-19 in the 33rd minute. It was a tight race, with Valhallan, as they trying to catch up.
"It wasn't easy to defend Valhallan, they were great players overall." Zuese says. "The game was full of good passes"
Players from both teams shuffled back and forth, intercepting and throwing.
In the 43rd minute, the score jumped up to 27-23, with Edsmontik pushing forwards.
The players that were subbed out were eventually subbed in again, and with the new energy, the team was ready.
Veyer, goal at the 45th minute.
Fredreich, goal at the 46th minute
Yjoger, goal at the 48th minute.
Goals were being scored, and the defence held up well enough to only concede 1 goal.
This shoots the score up to 30-24. The game has only 10 minutes left.

LAST MINUTES
"Pavje heter! Pass here!"
Players shout left and right in their own language and English to pass, to shoot, or to defend.
Eventually, Edsmontik and Valhallan are stuck in another stalemate situation, with the game being at the 56th minute.
Unfortunately for Valhallan, one free throw thrown by Dichen causes the stadium to erupt in cheer as the 31st goal for Edsmontik that game is made.
The score, at 31-24, couldn't possibly go up anymore.
However, Jak Veyer, Edsmontik's top goalscorer for not only this Handball World Cup but also the National Edsmon Hanball Tournament, decided
"Oh, we WILL be getting more goals." (He says this in a post-game interview.)
He grabs a pass from Demener, and shoots it as hard as he can. The ball flies, and goes into the top right corner, earing Edsmontik 32 goals for the game, and also coincidentally the same score as the previous game.
The whistle blows, and Edsmontik wins, 32-24.

GOALSCORERS

-Movkenbakken Dichen: 4

WEDICH (WEDITCH) VS TERO AL DISCO MATCHDAY 2
PALE EXHIBITION CENTRE
MARCH 21ST, 2024

NOTE: THIS IS WEDICHIAN POINT OF VIEW
(Wedich is the secondary nation of Edsmontik, so RP styling will be similar)

PRE-GAME
After their first game success, Wedich was ready to play the next one.
Since the nation they were playing lost they first round, they thought it would be pretty easy to beat them.
"It was all, very sure. Like the Vjedaskaive Cup back at my high school in Trosi Province." De-Jeusk states. "We knew who would win, or we thought. But we were very confident about our choices."
Wedich was very careful though, as Tero al Disco could have some tricks up their sleeves.
The team entered their locker room, and got talking with their coach.
Suiozxecaft once again reviews with the team the strategies and tricks to winning a handball game.
"The Teros are very good, but we must show them that we are better." he tells them.
Eventually, they are called to the court, and the team exists the locker room.

GAME BEGINNING
The players on each team enter, and look at each other before standing in their positions, waiting for the starting whistle. The commentator, Andrew Dovcuss, notifies viewers of the lineup.
"Today, on this early morning, a very foggy early morning, we have Tero al Disco VS Wedich! Both nations stand strong although Tero al Disco has lost the previous match, some fans believe they will win this one. Let's see the lineups, shall we?"

-Eugenio Soria (CB)

-José Vargas (CB)

-René Sánchez (GK)

GAME STARTS
By winning the coin toss, Tero al Disco would get to begin.
Silvio Da Souza begins by passing to Rodrigo Toledo, who passes it upwards to other players. Wedichian players get into position, and Keyelske Montrono manages to intercept a Teros pass.
The ball goes up, back left, right, and eventually, Jeu Neusinege, "The Man", throws the ball straight into the net, faster than Moretti could respond.
"1-0!" shouts the commentator.
The first goal in the 1st minute. A very quick goal indeed.
Within the next minute though, Tero al Disco's Trevisani smacks a goal in, tying the game 1-1 in the 2nd minute.

MINUTE 10+
Things were not looking too okay for Wedich. They were now losing at minute 11 with a score of 3-5. Tero al Disco's Pivot was better than they had thought.
"We thought we jinxed it there; we were losing when we said it'd be an easy win." Djone Vaulkwell tells an interviewer.
However, the game flipped, and Wedich, using Jaak Junor Jr.'s powerful arms, threw 2 goals in, equalizing the game at 5-5.
But one accidental trip later, and Tero al Disco had a free throw.
The shot flew through the air, but Neosen III dived for it.
With one punt, the ball flew out of the danger zone, and they had saved a shot.
The game shifted again, with it being a tight race for the win.
12:00: Wedich 6, TaD 5.
14:00: Wedich 9, TaD 10.
16:00: Wedich 11, TaD 11.
The game was a slow shuffle from Tero al Disco to Wedich and vice versa. People were biting their nails.

PRE-HALFTIME
Players rushed around, and Tero al Disco had Wedich panicking.
TaD's pivot had yet again been a nuisance to Wedich's team, making slick passes that flew past the defense.
Eventually, Tero al Disco was at 15 goals at the 23rd minute, and Wedich was only at 12.
However, Luck chose Wedich, and the game flipped again.
After subbing in Oddefauklan Zeukalmen because of Junor Jr's injury, a bunch of shots were made at the Teros' goal.
Zeukalmen not only scored one, but THREE goals on the enemy team.
"The look on the TaD's goalkeeper, Máximo Moretti, was an expression of shock." Zeukalmen says. "I was too good." "Oh you shut it." Quevek responds.
The score hopped from 12-15 to 15-15, tying Wedich with Tero al Disco.
But "too soon" according to Zeukalmen, the first half was over.
"I could have scored more goals if I was a starter, but I admit Junor jr. is a little better." he says.

POST-HALFTIME
Eventually, the players finished their talks with their coaches, and so did halftime.
Many of the subs came off the bench, replacing players.
And as planned, Ovpakt Cedrarcalloustemakt replaced Neosen III as GK for the second half.
Once again, players rushed around, intercepted, and dribbled really well.
However, Da Souza was still being a nuisance to the Wedichians. He would always make good passes and intercept Wedichian throws.
But a dozen minute later, the score changed, a lot. Tero al Disco had their pivots, and wingers score a lot, like Wedich. However, Wedich's defense players were also good at scoring, making good use of free throws or penalty shots.
The score, at minute 43, rises to 21-20, with Wedich in the lead. All they needed now, was for Tero al Disco to make a blunder.
But as Tero al Disco ties it up with Justiniano Guzmán, Zeukalmen decides,
"Holy crap, I need to score some goals."
And score some goals he does. Right before the 50th minute, he and Jeu Neusinege DEVASTATE Tero al Disco with two goals, shooting the score up to 23-21

FINAL MINUTES
The Wedichian players quickly sub in new defenders to keep the score.
Dieme-Lusste, Letkiinet, and Vauustuk hold the line as the attackers raise the score.
At minute 53, 24-22 is the score.
And Zeukalmen decides that,
"Holy crap I should land a FINISHER on them!"
So he, along with Dieme-Lusste, and the other defenders form a passing triangle that lets him land two last goals.
26-22.
The final whistle is blown, and the team celebrates, and most of them are just all over Zeukalmen, who is allowed the left winger position because Darnem Quevek was nice enough to give it up for him.

GOALSCORERS
-Oddefauklan Zeukalmen: 13
-Jeu Neusinege: 7
-Darnem Quevek: 2
-Jerov Moltensa: 2

WEDICH WINS MATCHDAY 2 AGAINST TERO AL DISCO 26-22

WEDICH (WEDITCH) VS CRPOSTRAN
STATE SPORTS CENTRE
MARCH 21ST, 2024

NOTE: THIS IS WEDICHIAN POINT OF VIEW
(Wedich is the secondary nation of Edsmontik, so RP styling will be similar)

PRE-GAME
The Wedichians get off their bus, and look over to their opponent for the evening, Crpostran.
After the morning match that was a victory for Wedich, the players were hyped up for the following match that evening.
The only similar thing about two matches though, was that both nations they faced, Tero al Disco and soon Crpostran, were unranked, just like them.
Adding to the differences, they were now at the State Sports Centre, a different stadium from their usual Pale Exhibition Centre.
The players walk into their locker room and sit with the Coach.
"This morning, We faced a nation and won." Verker Suiozxecaft starts, "This evening, we will do the same. But we will try even more to get to the top of our group."
The players then review their strategies and tactics, before the staff member alerts them of the upcoming game.
Suiozxecaft gets his team in a line, and they walk out towards the court.

GAME BEGINNING
The players line up, and commentator Joscrak Lagge takes the stand.
"On this pretty nice evening, we have Wedich and Crpostran! Both Unranked nations! However, one has been winning more than the other, so let's see, shall there be an upset? Or not? Here are the linueps!" Lagge says.

-[Unnamed] (GK)

"Isn't that nice for Wedich, after his performance last match, Zeukalmen was changed to a starter!" he adds.

GAME STARTS
Wedich win the coin toss and begin first.
Neusinege passes it to Zeukalmen, who passes it straight over to Junor Jr, who luckily for Wedich, healed quickly, and continues the passing triangle.
Crpostran, although watching carefully over the 3, couldnt manage to intercept.
Eventually, Zeukalmen sees a chance, and throws.
The ball flies through the air and into the net as soon as the timer hit the first minute.
"Goal for Wedich! 1-0" the commentator tells viewers.
Players push back and forth through the minutes, with Edsmontik throwing more goals in with its new "passing triangle" tactic. Even if the passing triangle isn't always a triangle.
Neusinege, then Junor Jr, then more players score on Crpostran.
Eventually, the score is 5-0 in the 6th minute.

10TH+ MINUTE
By minute 10, Crpostran was sort of making a comeback. Sort of.
The score changed wildly, from 5-0 to 9-3. Crpostran was hanving a hard time getting around the defenses of Wedich, and Wedich was making some good progress.
2 minutes later, and Neusinege slapped 3 more goals at Crpostran, changing the score to 12-3.
But Crpostran retaliated, sending the score to 12-5.
Most of the time, Wedich had a lead by around 2x the score.
Minute 14: 15-7
Minute 16: 17-9
Minute 20: 18-10

PRE-HALFTIME
Halftime was about to begin, and Wedichians were rushing to up their score.
However, Crpostran was steadily catching up, as they now understood Wedich's tactic.
The score was 19-12 in the 24th minute.
But one trip later, and Wedich had a penalty throw.
At the line, Vaulkwell prepared his shot, and threw the ball straight at the center while aiming like he was shooting left.
This fooled the Goalkeeper, making him dive away from the ball.
"GOOOOOAL!!!!!!" the commentator shouts.
20-12 was the score at minute 26.
Eventually, Crpostran added a few goals before the halftime whistle blew.
The score rises to 20-15, and players head to their coaches for halftime.

POST-HALFTIME
Even though many Wedichians have now subbed out, the passing triangle is still used. It's just turned into a passing rhombus.
This time, the CB would be a part of it, usually for the start, but the passing would break up into a triangle after a chance is seen.
The ball goes around, and eventually, Wedich slaps a few goals into Crpostran's face.
Zeukalmen, Neusinege, Quevek, Junor Jr, all of them score some goals on the enemy team throughout the span of 10 minutes.
The score shoots up to 25-16, with Wedich in the lead.
At the 42nd minute, Men Vauustuk rushes up, and gets a good angle, where he throws the ball.
It flies through the air and through the hands of the goalkeeper. 26-16.
However, the game gets more intense, as both teams score constantly on eachother.
"I don't even know how so many goals were scored in so little time." Seau Fotser says. "It was a race."
By minute 50, the score rose to 31-23.

FINAL MINUTES
Players were scoring goals left and right. The game was getting a little rough as well, with more shoving and intercepting.
Eventually, with some goals from both teams, the score shot up to 36-27.
It was the 55th minute, and the game would end soon.
"Pass, pass!"
"Over here, I'm open!"
Passes were being made, and tactics were being changed.
EVentually, by minute 58, Crpostran was at 29 goals, but Wedich had hit 39. Almost 40.
"We wanted to hit 40, we had many players go up. Junor Jr. says.
But then, with one last free throw by Dieme-Lusste in the 60th and final minute,
"GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!" the commentator shouts.
The ball went in the top corner, just out of reach for the goalkeeper.
Players chased and surrounded Dieme-Lusste, falling into a big pile of cheers.
The game had ended, Wedich 40, Crpostran 29.

MIR stuns 5th-ranked Srednjaci

The unranked Spiders upset 5th seeded Srednjaci in their first ever international handball game earlier today. Here's how they did it.

First Half
As soon as the game started, it was clear that the Spiders would do better than expected. As soon as Srednjaci scored, they would always score right back. However, the MIR was never able to take the lead, largely thanks to the help of Adela Music, Srednjaci's star goalkeeper. Both teams were playing defensively, and as such, there was only one occasion where any side got to a 2-goal lead, that being in the 21st minute when Martin Vrenic put his team up 11-9, and Srednjaci looked to use this as a turning point, to crush the Spiders and prove that they deserved the high ranking. However, the Spiders quickly crawled back, mostly thanks to Wavint Aflafog, and at the break, the score stood at 13-12, with Srednjaci having the advantage.

Second Half
The second half started much as the first half had went, but soon, disaster struck. In the 37th minute, Adela Music lunged to block a shot, and as he moved, he ended up twisting his ankle, taking him out of the game. The injury report shows that he will be back for Srednjaci's next game, but until then, Srednjaci had to rely on their backup goalkeeper, Violeta Suzanic. Suzanic proved herself to not be nearly as good as Music, and the Spiders took full advantage of this, going on an all-out attack. Goal after goal after goal came through the hands of Torvi Potsi, and by the time Srednjaci had gotten their rhythm back, the score was 27-20 in the Spiders' favor. A last ditch effort by Srednjaci only netted them a couple of goals, and as the final whistle blew, the Martian players started celebrating their upset.

What This Means
Coming into the start of the tournament, the Spiders were thought to only be able to make the playoffs with a lot of luck and as a low seed. This rejects that idea. Of course, there's 5 more games to go, but we know now that we've got a chance.

[for reference I wrote this yesterday ]
New Eestiball but IC now! Fancy!
By the time next ECC rolls around, you'll see why I picked this nation specifically.
