The nation of Lagoban is a former Portuguese colony that broke away from its colonizer in 1974 and established itself as a socialist republic. The United States of America, which was still reeling from its recent defeat in Vietnam, looked wearily at the new and upcoming nation. However, Lagoban’s president, Donato Moniz, extended a metaphorical olive branch by inviting American diplomats and allowing the USA to assist with infrastructure projects within the young, still-developing country. They also allowed for a single US air-base to be established, though this base would be abandoned in 1986.
The nation of Lagoban managed to keep relatively peaceful relationships with both eastern and western nations, though it found itself aligning more with the west due to the USSR’s aggressive expansion and totalitarian policies. This view would come to bite Lagoban when the USSR and other anti-western nations began to supply a radical communist insurgent group, the People’s Republic Army for the Liberation of Lagoban(PRALL), in order to overthrow the current socialist regime.The Second Lagobanese Civil War would begin in February of 1990 and began with PRALL launching a massive offensive campaign from the north. Their new Soviet armor, aircraft, and weaponry helped PRALL forces steamroll the under-equipped Lagobanian People’s Army. The LPA was outnumbered nearly 15 to 1 thanks to pacifist policies that had greatly reduced the size of the military. Lagoban’s government begged for international support as the northern region of their nation was captured and their capital cut-off and besieged. Things were looking bleak for the SPRL until a collection of nations from around the world decided to defend their African ally by forming a coalition. They would launch a military campaign dubbed Operation: Flashpoint, with the first of their troops arriving in April of 1991.
PRALL forces soon found themselves on the run and being pushed back to their original territory in the forests of the North. Here, the war began to bog down into a stalemate, as the communists waged guerrilla warfare against the members of Flashpoint. But their capacity for launching any mass offensives was believed to have been neutralized, as PRALL suffered heavy losses any time they stepped outside of their defenses. With the main danger to the SPRL significantly weakened, the Flashpoint members began to assist with policing and humanitarian operations. A significant portion of the Lagobanian population were left with no homes to return to and were left starving thanks to a drought that struck at the worst possible time. Some members of PRALL were caught smuggling weapons and infiltrating cities by hiding in crowds of refugees, but there were simply too many people to search and not enough troops to spare.
As the war seemingly began to die down, so did the coalition’s military activity and their wariness of the enemy’s abilities. Troops began to leave, with numerous bases being shut down or converted into housing for refugees. Complacency set in as PRALL forces became more and more quiet as the months dragged on. While they still had a solid grasp on the northernmost regions of the nation, there was very little combat between the two factions, save for the occasional skirmish or helicopter attack. But the feeling of security and supremacy over PRALL forces would soon come crashing down.
The date is December 2nd, 1993. All is well in the capital of Lagoban. Though it still bears open wounds from the war, such as abandoned military vehicles left in the streets and half-destroyed buildings, life has almost returned to normal. A recent and massive influx of refugees has put stress on the coalition’s humanitarian resources and has raised red flags. Lagobanian intelligence warned that a large number of PRALL insurgents had been reportedly spotted hiding amongst the refugees, but these reports were downplayed by the coalition forces and Lagobanian authorities. They sent more armed patrols through the city, believing a minor attack would occur, but that it would be of no consequence. But as the midday sun shined down on the capital, these beliefs would be violently smashed into pieces when PRALL forces would plunge the entire city into chaos…

The Socialist People’s Republic of Laboban(SPRL)
The SPRL has maintained the nation for nearly 20 years under the leadership of party leader and Lagobanian president Donato Moniz. He is a pacifist at heart and strongly advocates for a united Lagoban that collaborates with foreign nations regardless of their differences in politics, race, or religion. As a result, the Lagobanian People’s Army is a well-trained but small military that heavily relies on western-equipment in order to continue its operations. While they are extremely competent and capable, they are spread thin across the nation, and are often outnumbered during firefights.
People’s Republic Army for the Liberation of Lagoban(PRALL)
While they may be on the backfoot, these troops are not to underestimated. What they may lack in uniforms and modern-day equipment, they more than make up for in experience and aggressiveness. They rely on both high manpower and sheer firepower to overcome any situation they find themselves in. The PRALL’s forces now hide amongst civilians, striking against unsuspecting troops. They may be down on their luck, but are far from being out of the fight.
