The Sylvarian Civil War

In the heart of a continent, a small coastal nation burns - as envious eyes from across the borders and the seas divvy up the nation for their own ambitions.

Whispers of the Sylvarian Civil War

Divine Salvation Movement Live Broadcast
A robed man with an assault rifle stands in broad daylight, against a mountainous background. Explosions and artillery fire can be heard in the distance. "Today, we have captured the town of Tinshold. Today, we have done a great thing. The holy warriors of Sylva-Ih have reclaimed this settlement from the nonbelievers. Today, the nonbelievers, the Infidels have been gathered here, to make recompense for their sins!"
The camera pans to 40 men - soldiers, journalists, bound, with black bags over their heads. Some of them weep.
"Listen to the weeping of the non-believers, the infidels! Know, Sylvaria, that all who defy the way of Sylva-Ih, of the religion of their forefathers, shall meet the fate of these men!"
40 robed militants, each holding a machete, enter the view of the camera. They stand behind each man, and kick him forward, as to kneel.
"Sylvah-Ih A A'kh! Sylvah-Ih A A'kh! Sylvah-Ih A A'kh!"
One by one, each man is beheaded.
The program cuts out, with the emblem of the Divine Salvation Movement emblazoned upon the screen.

A red-colored poster flutters in the wind of Vaylenburgh’s streets, as the sound of gunfire can be heard in the distance.
"Workers of Vaylenburgh, Comrade Ivan Nabakanov is pleased to announce the first People's Trial of the bourgeoisie! Come to center square, to witness retribution unto the oppressors!"

Sylvarian News Network: Nationalists clash with the Sylvarian central government in Havenbrook.
“The Sylvarian Republican Guard has been reporting shooting battles with the nationalist Sylvarian Liberation Front.”
“Now, to our man on the ground.”
“Thank you Jess.”
“The situation is pretty bad here. I’m here live in Havenbrook central park. Nationalist forces are advancing in 2 city districts-” the reporter is shot through the skull by a sniper, live on television.

ISI 21-B Special Report 21-B.
“ISI assets have firmly taken control over a Sylvarian militia, known as the Unity for Progress Militia. They should serve the interests of the state for the time being. We have directed units to move towards Siladen city...”

Rockets are screaming in the skies above Havenbrook. Nationalists have taken the country's prime agricultural land, and the most important port may soon fall into their hands. Religious fundamentalists are besieging the city of Point Overlook. Communist insurgents have seized the nation's industrial heartland, and all the while, a foreign backed-militia menaces the exposed and cut-off north.
It was meant to be President Voss's first term in office. Her election simultaneously sparked anger and hatred from all sides of the political spectrum, due to longstanding political tensions. The young Republic is at threat of extinction in 4 separate ways.
For President Voss, the stakes could not be higher.
She paced in the presidential office. Every second she spent there, was a time in which the enemies of her government - of the Sylvarian people - were killing their own countrymen.

And in the meantime, foreign forces began to make their move - the neighboring and utterly domineering Principality of Arakhkhar and the, for now, uninvolved, Commonwealth of Primeva eye the border. Covert units move to support respective sides.
In the meantime, from overseas, other forces seek to impress their own will upon the small nation.
The Grand Economic Consortium, seeking influence on the continent, sends a contingent of 2,000 troops to aid the government.
Likewise, The Socialist Republic Of Mercenaries sends a humanitarian aid convoy - and only time will tell what fate shall befall them.
The Federal Kingdom of Ardenia (Weltkria) sends a desperate operation to extract possibly 10,000 Ardenian citizens and journalists, in a race against time - it may not be long before the ports are blockaded, and their fates left to the murderous feuding factions - or the tender mercies of the Fundamentalists.
The Empire of Lysennia puts out calls to end abuses, although forces mobilize in unseen places, preparing to strike against the Communists and the murderous DSM.

In the meantime, other parts of the International community may take notice as time progresses - backing any of the 5 factions that have emerged in the Sylvarian Civil War.

Sylvanthor, the Presidential Palace War Room, February 10th, 2024
"President Voss." the Sylvanthorian Defense minister spoke softly, in the darkened room. 9 men and women stood in the room, stood around a map of Sylvanthor that had been hastily provided to them.
"Speak, Minister Jakar." Spoke the newly elected, and somewhat incompetent President Voss. She was fifty-three, and only newly elected.
"The situation is dire. I will not attempt to hide it, because doing so would do us no good. Siladen City, in the north, is being menaced by UPM units. We suspect that the damn Arakhkharans are aiding them, because they're inflicting heavy losses on us."
"To make matters worse, that entire region is cut off from the capital. Damn Commies under Navanov have taken full control over Vaylenburgh. The majority of that province - nearly 68% of our industrial capacity - is under their control. We've also lost access to the port of Uthikshaym, south of Vaylenburgh."
"The Capital, Sylvanthol, thankfully, remains in our full control - aside from the occasional Commie infiltrator, UPM Black ops, or DSM suicide bomber. We also control two ports along the coast. We also have full control over the island of Sylvanhaym, which should prove absolutely vital in preventing aid from reaching the Communists."
Thus spake the Minister - a veteran of the Republic for nearly 30 years, who spoke rather gruffly and pessimistically.

President Voss looked appalled, horrified for her own safety, and angry in equal measure. She spoke quietly. "And what of the South and West?"

Minister Jakar continued.

"The major port city of Havenbrook is currently experiencing heavy fighting. The nationalists, under the 'Sylvarian National Front,' led by the traitor General Marcus Kalden, are advancing. The city is not projected to hold much longer. In addition, nearly the entire south is under their control. with near total dominance in the province. "

The western border city, Point Overlook, next to Primeva, is under functional encirclement by the DSM. Reports of civilian casualties are mounting. The projected number of troops to hold the entire city is just 2,000... they are outnumbered nearly 5:1, and there are defections daily, on all fronts. You have seen the... beheadings, haven't you?"

President Voss looked at him with sorrow.

"Animals... just... animals."
The minister spoke sombrely.
"Defections are increasing daily. Over 40% of our current forces are encircled, or out of supply reach. We're on the verge of losing 3 major cities. Mrs. President - probabilities of success are decreasing rapidly."
The President now spoke.
"Damn it... we'll have to accept foreign aid, assuming anyone would even try and help us. But that help... those bastards are coming with strings attached, I just know it. And that'll commit the Nationalists against us to the death."
The minister of economics, a timid, thin young man named Osanus Vaul, now spoke up.
"Mrs. President... our industry is, as Minister Jakal mentioned, in the hands of the C-Communists. The loss of tax revenue off of the agriculture in the south has crippled our agricultural system. We are facing imminent food shortages. Inflation has hit... gulp 982% of pre-war levels. In terms of money... we have none. Bankruptcy is expected within 4 weeks."
President Voss was, although before angry, now utterly furious. She bitterly spoke. "Send out a call for foreign aid. Sylvaria is not yet lost."
"Oh, and - the minister of State Security - does anyone have a fix on his whereabouts?"
Minister Jakal now spoke.
"No, madame President. Minister Banalos' whereabouts are unknown."
There was no worse news in her eyes. The country was in tatters, innocent civilians were being beheaded en-masse, famine and poverty are all but imminent, and the military's morale was so low that it could barely operate. Defections and desertions were growing to the point where, at one point, an entire battalion joined the Nationalists - not to mention the fact that the government was widely unpopular in just about everywhere except the capital. To make matters worse, the one individual responsible for having suppressed all this is now missing - probably good for him. If She had her way, he would be shot fire allowing the situation to get this bad.
President Voss sat down, trembling.
"At least we hold the capital." It was a small consolation, but in truth, the president was nearly suicidal.

The fate of a people, a nation, hangs in the balance.

DFM Saint Peter, cruise ship converted into a troopship

The small 2,000 man force had departed the port of Beaufort a few days earlier was now 40 km off the coast of government-controlled Sylvaria. They were all volunteers, heavily armed and with the latesy equipment, prepared to defend the government against the insurgents and perhaps gsin some influence in the region. The two marine battalions brought with them loads of equipment which would help them better protect the friendly area and recapture the regions lost to the terrorists. Confidence was high, after all, the Consortian Marines, were world-recognized as some of the most elite amphibious fighting forces. They could adapt to any environment and overcome any challenges posed by even the strongest enemy. If there was somebody who could win a conflict, the Consortian marines were those people.

Aa the modified cruise liner approached friendly waters, its communications officer sent a radio transmission to the nearest government-controlled port:

"This is Consortian military transport ship DFM Saint Peter, we are transporting 2,000 volunteers willing to fight for the government and heavy equipment of different varieties. We are requesting permission to dock and unload personnel and equipment in a government-owned friensly port. Over." Said the radio officer, as the marines prepared to get off the ship as soon as they moored into port.

Port Galen, Sylvaria
A message crackled over the radio.
"This is the Galen Port Authority. You are cleared for arrival at dockyard 30. Be advised, there are intermittent rocket artillery strikes on this area. Your help is badly needed."

Point Overlook, Sylvaria
Private Rayn stood in the trench. It was unnerving - the DSM was continuing to advance towards the heart of the city.
He looked over to the other side of the trench - a corpse stared him in the face. The face was that of someone who was once his friend. Rayn let a single tear escape, but he thought to himself that perhaps he was lucky - that he would not be beheaded, as he was soon likely to be.
He could not ruminate long - the cry of "Sylvah Ih A A'kh!" was heard from a hundred voices. Shaking. he raised his head out of the trench, and began to fire - but deep inside, he knew he would not survive this day.

Sylvanthor, the Presidential Palace War Room, February 10th, 2024
Minister Jakar approached President Voss, seemingly in brighter spirits.
"We've received word - Consortian forces have arrived to our aid in Port Galen."
President Voss perked up at this news.
"The first good news I've heard in weeks. I want them to move against those damned animals - have them sent to Point Lookout."
"But, madame president, it'll take days for them to get there. And Havenbrook is on the verge of collap-"
"Are you questioning my orders, minister?"
"No, madame president."
"Good. I thought not."

The large ship maneuvred into the port and as soon as it came to a halt the volunteers unloaded rapidly, getting off the ship. They brought large amounts of equipment, including howitzers, SAMs, UCAVs and other pieces of equipment. L-ATVs in M1278 Heavy Guns Carrier JLTV configuration unloaded from the ship as the 2,00 marines and the equipment brought lined up in the port, awaiting orders from Sylvarian officials. The two Lieutenant Colonels, Marcel Orlent and Marcel Orlent stood at the front of the 2,000 men, arranged in columns of 100, and awaited orders. They also prepared a manifest with all the equipment brought along with them so that their allies would know where to allocate it.

Another message crackles over the radio
"Consortian marines, can you hear me? I am General Paul Rayn, Sylvarian Republican Guard."
"It's so good to see a friendly face. I wish we could meet in person, but alas, my attention is called elsewhere. You are hereby ordered to Point Lookout - break the siege of the DSM."
Of course, the General's orders seemed nonsensical. Why would marines be sent to the other side of the country? But - in reality, his son was on the ground, trapped in Point Lookout. That was his sole motive.

Marcel Orlent checked his map of the region. Point Lookout was very far away. Yet, they were marines. No challenge too great, no distance too far. Once they joined the Amphibious Battlegroups , as the marine warfare branch was called in TGEC, they stopped being humans, and became something better. Marines. Charles Coronet, the other Lt. Col., radioed back and asked him

"Before we leave, we also brought a Patriot PAC-3 and an MPQ-53 Radar to defend theathre airspace. Where should we set them up?" He asked. "And also, will transport by train be provided or shall we march to the target and move with our JLTVs?" He adressed his final question

"The rail lines are unsafe for travel." Answered General Rayn, seemingly irritated that they were asking questions.
"Bring the air defenses with you to Point Overlook."
This was utterly nonsensical - the DSM did not even have an air force. Only the occasional rocket would be launched, or simple kamikaze suicide propeller planes.

In the North of the country, in the UPM command post.
Colonel Aleksei Navanov, puppet leader of the Unity for Progress Militia, paced back and forth. He had been awaiting orders - after seizing the border post, Command had seemingly gone silent.
This silence was rectified as an ISI operative entered the room - he knew that disobeying her would mean a very painful death, so he gave a deferential bow.
"My lady."
The operative was dressed in a full bodysuit. Armored with a bulletproof vest. A featureless black helmet portrayed no emotion, no distinctive facial feature at all - an entirely smooth surface every bit as callous as the individual behind it.
"Rise, human."
Navanov ceased his bow, and looked up to her.
"May I know who I address, my lady?"
The agent looked coldly at him.
"I am Cipher-Eight. You have new orders - you are to move on Siladen City. ISI Black Operations Unit-33 will assist you. Return with the head of the local mayor, or do not return at all."
Navanov broke into a cold sweat. This would be no easy task.
"Y-yes, my lady. It will be done."

"Copy. Proceeding to Point Overlook." Said Marcel Orlent. With a few hand signals, every piece of artillery, air defence and other equipment brought with them began being towed by the L-ATVs, as the cars started heading towards the destination. A total of 206 marines found places in the vehicles, while the remaining 1794 began marching towards the destination in columns. The Skyranger 35 mobile air defence systems moved along with the convoy, as they slowly began making their way towards the besieged city

Havenbrook Central Square
The Nationalist banner now hung from the town hall - Lieutenant Commander Neil Kanov of the Sylvarian National Front now watched, saluting as it was raised. There was little resistance remaining - soon, the Nationalists would seize the remaining 3 suburbs in the northeast.

A rather stubborn stronghold remained - carved out of the ruins of a bank, a group of government soldiers had built a fortress that was impeding their progress.
Kanov, however, had to press on. The future of his country depended on it.

He hit the radio, which crackled to life.
"Contacting Havenbrook artillery unit 4. This is Lieutenant Commander Kanov, SNF 3rd Battalion."
"This is Havenbrook artillery unit 4, we copy, Lieutenant Commander."
"I want these coordinates wiped off the map - address is 503 NE Pine Street."
"Copy. Strike commencing. Artillery Unit 4 out."

Kanov waited only a minute before watching 5 rockets instantly annihilate the fortified position - opening the road to clear the suburbs. Soon, the city would fall.
Soon, the government would fall - and the people would rise.

Sattelite imagery showed the impact of the rockets, and IR sensors displayed the extent of the impact. The Consortian marines would be facing well equipped and highly motivated opponents. They could not yet reveal their full fighting force, the marines, so they kept marching. Their plan was to walk for 16 hours, taking turns in the car if they got tired, so that the besieged city couls be reached ASAP. The second enemy forces were within 50 km of the two CAESAR Howitzers, they would begin striking the enemy with artillery. Yet, right now they had to keep moving, trying to reach the city as fast as they could. No meter of terrain could be lost. Charles Coronet thought that if the situation was so bad, friendly forces from inside the city ought to tactically withdraw and launch a xounter-attack later, but the boss gave his order. The marines kept moving towards their target.

The situation in neighboring Sylvaria was dominating the news. "If it bleeds, it leads" was the old saying, and there was plenty of blood flowing on the other side of the border. Premier Claire Rosey had to cancel a planned appearance at an entrepreneurial summit and fly back to Mosland, the capital city, for an emergency meeting of her Council.

To say that the Premier was frustrated would be an understatement. She had run almost exclusively on domestic issues, and her Progressive Party had established a comfortable majority in the House of Deputies on the basis of that platform. Foreign affairs, especially matters of defense, were her weakest point and also her least favorite subject by a wide margin. Rosey was young - one of the youngest Premiers in Primevan history - and firmly committed to the Progressive Party's historical distrust of the military as a bastion of conservatism and a drain on the budget. Meanwhile, members of the opposition were scrambling to book appearances on the news shows to raise a fuss about the need for greater attention to the Commonwealth's armed forces.

"If I have to hear Evans' voice one more time talking about 'undermining our readiness' I'm going to order an airstrike on Global News," Rosey was venting to her assistant as they hustled down the hallways of Commonwealth House towards the meeting room. William Evans, Deputy for the National Center Party and the golden boy of the opposition, had been a pain in her ass from the beginning and he was obviously relishing the opportunity to castigate the Premier.

"Depending on which host is on, your poll numbers might go up," her assistant quipped. Rosey chuckled, but stifled the emotion as they approached the door to the meeting room. She took a deep breath, ran her hands down the front of her blazer, and put on her Premier Face - a well-honed expression that conveyed authority, but not haughtiness. Then she opened the doors.

Various Ministers rose as she entered but Rosey waved for them to return to their seats. She took her own at the large mahogany desk at the front of the room, facing the Council members. "Let's start with Defense," she said firmly.

Defense Minister Titus Shaw rose, cleared his throat, and began to speak. "The Sylvarian Government is overstretched," he said plainly. "They have lost control over huge swathes of their country. Barring some sort of miracle, or substantial foreign support, they will continue to lose ground in the short term. On our border, we have Sylvarian Liberation Front, a nationalist force made up military defectors and militias. They occupy most of the towns closest to our border. However, there's also the Divine Salvation Movement. These are religious fundamentalists, and they control territory just across the border from Kasper."

"Should we be concerned about either of these groups attacking us?" Rosey asked.

Shaw shook his head. "Not at the moment, ma'am. But fundamentalists are always unpredictable. As a precaution, I would like to move additional units of the Ground Defense Force to the border region."

"Couldn't that be seen as provocative?"

"I think it will be seen as warranted," Shaw replied.

Rosey could hear annoyance in his voice. She had reluctantly appointed him as Defense Minister in a concession to the Progressive Party's allies in the House. He behaved professionally but obviously did not believe that she was making the right choices when it came to the military.

"And besides, having more troops nearby will be helpful in dealing with the refugees," Shaw added. "They're already appearing at border crossings, and the longer the fighting goes on the more people will be displaced."

"What units do you want to move?"

"The 131st Infantry Battalion, and the 2nd Ranger Battalion," he answered.

Rosey considered for a moment. "Fine," she said. "Do it. Now, let's talk about those refugees. What kind of resources will we need to mobilize..."

Later

Defense Minister Titus Shaw found the Director of the National Intelligence Service where he expected to - standing in the underground parking garage, smoking a cigarette. The new Premier had banished all smoking from Commonwealth House, so anyone who wished to indulge in their habit needed to find alternative places. While it was normally an annoyance - just another Progressive bugbear making things more difficult for everyone else - in this case Shaw appreciated that it allowed him to speak with the Director away from prying eyes and ears.

"Minister Shaw," Director Truman Pierce said by way of greeting.

"Director Pierce," Shaw returned the curt greeting. "I wanted to speak to you about an important matter."

"An important matter better suited to this venue?" Pierce raised an eyebrow, intrigued.

"Our Premier is going to bury her head in the sand and hope that this mess in Sylvaria sorts itself out," Shaw explained. "But we both know that the Government is on the back foot. They're likely to end up in exile on Sylvanhaym, if they're lucky. And that leaves the communists, or the fundies, or the Arakhkharans to take over." Pierce remained silent, listening intently. "I think we can both agree that, in the event of the collapse of the Sylvarian Government, it would be in Primeva's best interests if the National Front succeeded them in power."

"Let's say I do agree," Pierce said cautiously. "This is obviously not the position of the Premier. What do you propose to do to make it happen?"

"I think there are ways we might...bolster the National Front, short of outright support or intervention," Shaw said. "And I think, with your help, we can do this in a way that avoids...negative attention from the Premier."

Pierce considered the proposal. "Let me think about it," he told Shaw.

North and East of Siladen City
The UPM departed 3,000 UPM militiamen, and new faces - 1,700 ISI Black Ops troopers.
The two groups rarely intermingled - Black Ops units put fear into the hearts of the UPM militiamen, and so they rarely interacted.
With them, they took the UPM's supply of howitzers, attached to trucks as to form the basics of their attack on Siladen city - the city was cut off from government forces by the Communists, and there was only a minor garrison located inside the town - just a single battalion stood in the way of their advance. A single, starving, demoralized battalion.
Colonel Navanov, however, was still wary - there were reports of foreigners entering the civil war besides Arakhkhar.
For the moment, however, their operations could go unimpeded.

Northwest of Havenbrook, Nationalist Camp
"New orders from General Kalden. Damn foreigners are meddling in this war - for the moment, helpin' against the DSM. Still, we can't have any more of them comin' in. New orders - take Port Galden. That'll leave the damn softies with only one mainland port, and cut off Havenbrook."
"Understood."
And so, 5 battalions of Nationalist paramilitary units - almost a third of their forces - , supported by mechanized units, prepared to advance on Port Galden - aiming to potentially trap Consortian forces at in the heart of a country in brutal civil war.
Their advance would not be easy - Government forces in Port Galden numbered at 4,700, and had limited air-support from the existing government. The main problem was that the government possessed the country's limited armored division - it was meant to be sent to Havenbrook, but with the near imminent fall of the city, they are currently in a state of limbo.
Artillery would also be redeployed. The window for foreign involvement in Sylvaria was closing quickly.

50 miles east of Point Overlook
A group of refugees were traveling east, towards the capital - taking sight of the Consortian forces. None dared to look at them - they were obviously emaciated. Some had been tortured. Some had lost everything to the DSM.
The two groups met on the road leading to Point Lookout.
A robed man, one of the refugees, walked up to one of the columns.
"You have come to help, yes?"

Khab'va, Capital of the Worker's Republic of South Nixia.
A scrawny aide approaches the Minister of Defense, who is smoking an imported pipe from a nearby capitalist nation.
"Comrade-Minister!" He shouts, saluting.
"Stop shouting so loud, or I'll have you shot."
"Y-yes, Comrade Minister. You asked me to deliver a report on the situation in Sylvaria."
The Minister of Defense wheezes a few times, much to the chagrin of the aide.
"Yes, yes. Send thi- coughs sorry... this order. Have it copied, and deliver it to admiral Patrushshev and General Kagnivalny."
"Yes, Comrade-minister."

The order contained instructions to the Admiral, and to the General - to send aid to the Communists in the ongoing Sylvarian civil war. They would have to run past the government controlled Sylvanhaym, and make it to the only PRV-controlled port. To this end, 2 of the Navy's newest ships - a Projekt 67 cruiser, and a Projekt 92N frigate would be sent. Sylvaria would not dare risk a war with South Nixia, which possessed a military which dwarfed it - at least, that was their assumption.

Joint Base North Sentinel, Blumstead

General Julian Brenson, commander of the 4th Brigade, had a splitting headache. He hadn't been drinking enough water - just a constant stream of coffee to keep him alert and active enough to manage the crisis unfolding next door. "NorthSent," as the troops called it, normally housed the two armored battalions that made up his brigade, plus two squadrons of multirole fighters and a squadron of helicopters. Now the Ministry of Defense had sent him an additional infantry battalion and a battalion of Rangers, who were airmobile infantry. That meant more people, more vehicles, more equipment, and more supplies that needed to be accommodated. The base was full to bursting.

He'd already sent the Rangers up to the town of Kasper to operate from there. It would put his quickest reaction force closest to the border, and ease the strain on North Sentinel's limited room. The 191st Infantry Battalion could be housed in the spare barracks on the base. So then the question was: what exactly was he supposed to be doing with all these extra soldiers?

The Ministry had been frustratingly vague on that subject. "Ensure full readiness for likely contingencies" were the exact words. By Brenson's reckoning, that could be anything from defending against a cross-border incursion to initiating one himself. For now, he'd instructed the Rangers and his brigade's Recon Company to work together and step up patrols along the border. Infiltrators were a concern, but his main worry was refugees. The fundamentalists were brutal, uncompromising people by all accounts. They were sure to generate a stream of folks looking to flee from their particular brand of "governance." Someone trying to find safe haven would naturally look towards the border, and the peaceful, stable nation on the other side.

Orders for dealing with refugees had already come down from the Interior Ministry. They were to be treated with respect and kindness, and brought to designated processing facilities set up by the government. These were, at the moment, little more than tent city camps outside Kasper and Blumstead, where government agencies and NGOs were establishing humanitarian services. Brenson had dutifully complied with orders to detach a company of soldiers to provide security for each camp - even though sending men to babysit refugees clashed pretty directly with the "be ready for anything" instructions.

He also instructed his intelligence section to start gathering as much information about the state of affairs across the border as they could. Not just who was fighting and where - possible targets of opportunity for airstrikes or infantry raids, important transit points like bridges that could be seized or destroyed, and notable concentrations of forces. If things did escalate, he would be ready.

Commonwealth House, Mosland

"Just a few things for you to approve, ma'am."

Director Truman Pierce slid the stack of folders across the desk towards Premier Claire Rosey with a nonchalance that rankled her. The intelligence chief was far too self-confident for her liking. But he had endured in his role through two previous administrations, even with changes in the ruling party, and there were no blemishes on his record - that she was aware of.

"What am I approving here, Director?"

"Implementation of the measures I covered at the last Council meeting," Pierce replied. "Stepping up monitoring of Sylvaria, especially in regards to possible Arakhkharan involvement or other foreign intervention. We've already seen one nation deploy troops into the conflict. More might be on the way."

"What's this?" Rosey said, holding up one folder. She read the subject back to him. "Establishing channels of communication with the National Front?"

"As a matter of necessity," Pierce explained. "They control most of the territory along our shared border. We need some ability to communicate with them, if only to ensure that there are no misunderstandings - especially ones that could lead to conflict."

"They are not the legitimate Government of Sylvaria," Rosey said insistently.

"And this does nothing to recognize them as such," Pierce replied, defensiveness creeping into his measured voice. "But ignoring them won't make them go away. As long as they're sitting across from us, we should at least know how to get in touch with them."

Rosey glared at Pierce for a long moment, as if searching for deception in his eyes. He held her gaze, his face blank. She exhaled in a huff and signed her approval at the bottom of the document.

"Thank you, ma'am," Pierce said as he gathered up the signed authorizations. He waited until he was not just out of the Premier's office, but around two corners of the hallways of Commonwealth House, before he let a slight grin creep onto his face.

To the Sylvarian National Front:

This message does not represent acknowledgement of your claim to be the legitimate government of Sylvaria. Yet. However, it does recognize the realities of the situation: the internationally recognized Government is likely to collapse soon, and the SNF controls most of the territory bordering Primeva. It is in the best interests of both sides to establish secure channels of communication between us.

In addition, many within the government of Primeva would greatly prefer to see your group empowered in Sylvaria, as opposed to the other groups that might emerge out of the collapse of the recognized Government. We believe that it may be possible to help achieve that outcome through covert support.

Sylvarian National Front Command Center
The letter found its way to the General of the Sylvarian National Front, General Marcus Kalden. He was at first disgusted by any attempt of foreigners to meddle in their affairs. He, however, began to ruminate. They had always been brotherly neighbors, not necessarily imbued with the same stench as those that were now landing in the ports.
He reasoned that, should he not accept - they would move to support the government. Reasoning that Primeva would lose out in the event of a Fundamentalist or UPM victory, and with the near-imminent collapse of the government, they would indeed be the best candidate to support from Primeva's perspective. He resolved to accept their support, only so that the ends of the war could be achieved.

To: Director Truman Pierce

We have duly received your letter, and now I must respond with warm correspondence. Your offer of support is direly needed in the battles to come. Whatever you could send will be appreciated, so long as such support does not infringe of the right of the Sylvarian people to remain sovereign and independent.
We look forward to our cooperation.

Signed, Rightful leader of Sylvaria, General Marcus Kalden

Havenbrook
Commander Neil Kanov had received a promotion, in the field - for what reason?
Because his forces had cleared out one of the two remaining Havenbrook suburbs.
Only one suburb remained, and the government forces there were being crushed under the nationalist advance.

People were cheering, waving the flags of the Sylvarian National Front in the city center - the fall of Havenbrook was expected to occur within the day.

To the north, heavy fighting has broken out at Port Galen, the largest port still under government control.
For the moment, the SRG was maintaining control - but Rocket artillery was smashing into the armored battalion stationed there, and Nationalist forces were drawing nearer to an all out-assault daily.

Vaylenburgh
Secretary Ivan Nebekanov had received the word of South Nixian support well - with that, they could begin to launch a new offensive. Seeing as how many foreign enemy forces wanted to send troops to reinforce the bourgeoisie, he resolved that the next target must be the port of Innsholm, north of Port Galen.
He did not relish the thought of fighting the Nationalists - they had much better morale, and more importantly, ample stocks of food. Nevertheless, he signed the order to launch an attack on the last remaining government-controlled safe port in Sylvaria. By following the coast south, they could bypass the capital to do this attack.
Before doing so, he resolved to wait for South Nixian aid.

30 miles North of Siladen City
Private Holmes stood at checkpoint Bravo-4, facing north. He had heard the stories of UPM forces moving south. He prayed that they weren't true, because the 4-man outpost could barely hope to hold off bandits and looters, let alone the UPM's full might - and the might of their foreign backers across the border.
His prayers would go unanswered - as he looked through his binoculars, and saw strange 8-wheeled vehicles moving south along the highway - directly towards him. He also saw the purple banners they waved, and he knew - the UPM was coming. And as more came into view, it became clear the actual extant of the operation.
Shuddering, he put down the binoculars, and ran to the radio - he had to warn Siladen City!
"Come in, this is checkpoint Bravo-4, critical message to Siladen City garrison, I repeat, situation critical!"
"..."
Nothing but static. Every channel, actually - it became clear to him now. The radio was being jammed.
He looked to his peers, only to find that they had apparently deserted - having taken the car without him.
Thus, a lone private now stood as the lone defender of highway 5N - against an army.

Sylvanthol
Minister Jakar and President Voss now spoke with each other in the war room.
"Madame President. The situation is becoming critical. I suggest we relocate to Sylvanhaym, because we may not be able to hold the ports for much longer."
President Voss was now furious.
"Are you suggesting we abandon Sylvanthol, minister? Were you not so good at your job, I'd have you shot."
The minister spoke again.
"I'm not suggesting we abandon the capital, madame president. All I ask is that you consider relocating, for your own safety. From Sylvanhaym, we can better coordinate with international allies."
President Voss now saw the wisdom of his suggestion, although her pride allowed her only to reluctantly agree.
"If we lose the capital, it's you who will hang."
"Better that I be hung, that the Republic may live on."

ANS Rorvon, 20 kilometers from Port Galdlen

The destroyer ANS Rorvon was sailing towards Port Galen, one of the last strongholds of the Republic, at its follow was the remaining fleet and the Task Force that Anarus sent to help the Republic against the others.

The Rorvon quickly established comunications with Port Galen

" ANS Rorvon here, we are the Anarusian Task Force sent to help you, we request permission to enter the port and disembark our troops "

" This is Port Galen Authority, you have clean road Rorvon, welcome to Sylvaria. "

As this short conversation ended, the small flotilla was sailing to Port Galen, while on the mainland, Port Galen itself would soon be under siege

The Nationalists had snooped on the communications - their ongoing assault on the town could be broken by the arrival of the Anarusians.
Sylvarian National Front Port Galen assault post
A lieutenant approached the commanding officer determined to capture the port.
"Sir! Foreigners are moving into port, to aid the government."
Commander Holden, the commanding officer smoked his pipe, and spoke.
"Damn globalist liberals. We can't let them hit the port - I would've liked to keep it for ourselves, but that ain't an option. Use every piece of rocket artillery to destroy their fuel supplies and the actual dockyard itself - that way, they won't be able to dock."
"Yes sir."

And so - a furious artillery bombardment began of the Port of Port Galen.

Checkpoint Bravo-4
Private Holmes didn't even try to fight back - what was the point? His comrades in arms had fled, just took off without him.
He had never felt so betrayed in his entire life.
So, as the convoy approached, he simply laid his rifle on the ground.

The UPM convoy - nearly a dozen armored reconnaissance vehicles, trailed by several dozen armored cars filled to the brim with UPM soldiers and Arakhkharan black-ops units, simply stopped at the checkpoint.
A Black-Ops unit approached the kneeling private.
"Are there any other troops on this road, Private?"
Private Holmes resented his comrades, and the government that had sent him here to die.
"One outpost. 1 platoon of soldiers, 5 miles north of the city, along the highway."
The Arakhkharan Black-Ops shock trooper was obviously amused by his forthcoming attitude.
"Well, congratulations, private. How would you like to joi-"
"I'm in."
The Shock-trooper's amusement had turned to genuine shock.
"Very well. Your assignment is to hold this checkpoint."

And so, Private Holmes had just switched armies - but ended up at the same checkpoint as last time. He took a purple armband from one of the soldiers, and put it around his arm.
About 3 or so UPM soldiers dropped out of their vehicles, and awkwardly greeted Private Holmes, as the rest of the Convoy moved down in its advance on Siladen city.

**Sylvarian Waters, Near Sylvanhaym Island**

LNS Sol was a massive cruiser built in 1989 to serve the Lysiennian Navy. It and its sister LNS Terraris were deployed to act as troopships and transport troops from Lysiennia to Sylvaria.

Commanding both the ships was LND Vyren, a 2011-built destroyer. The entire fleet was in command of FCO Peter Schmidt. Lysiennia was clearly in support of the Democratic Government, and against the Communist 'Insurgency'.

"Sir we have reached Sylvarian Waters."

"Excellent Robert, send a transmission to the Sylvarian Republic's Head Quarters."

"Aye Aye Sir."

Peter looked at the seas. It was a beautiful day. The waters were a mix of blue, purple and pink. The sky was filled with fluffy pink clouds, the sun was a brilliant red and the moon was a bright yellow. But soon, soon this was to change into darkness and blood...

"Sir I've got the transmission. We shall recieve a response soon."

"Show me what you've made."

"Don't you trust me sir ?"

"Yes I don't.'

"I'm hurt."

"Show me the damn transmission!"

"Y-Yes sir."

"And next time don't use such a sassy tone when you're speaking to your commanding officer."

"Yes Sir."

"Good."

Peter looked at the message Robert had sent.

Code: Select all
**To:** The Sylvarian Republican Government.
**From:** LNS Vyran, Task Force 1-E
**Subject:** Assistance.

The Lysiennian Navy and Armed Forces would like to inform the Sylvarian Republic, that our forces are entering Sylvarian Waters in response to the recent transmission sent by the Slyvarian government for aid.

We would like permission to dock our ships.

Yours Sincerely,
Peter Smith,
FOC Taskforce 1-E

"Not bad, I approve. Send it."

"Sent."

"Good, now lets see if they'll respond."

Havenbrook
It was over. The Nationalists have successfully cleared the last suburb of the largest port city in Sylvaria. A column of nationalist troops marched down the central square, drawing the chagrin of some, and the enthusiastic cheers of others. This could have been avoided, of course - had the Consortian forces been sent south, Havenbrook might have held - but there was no possibility of recovery, not while Port Galen was still under vicious assault - and with the Nationalist victory in Havenbrook, forces could be moved to open a new assault vector from the south.

Port Galen
The fighting was fierce.
Several nationalist artillery units were hit by the Anarusian artillery - destroying 9 of their launchers. But the damage was already done - among the destroyed assets was 84% of Port Galen’s supply of fuel, and their radio communications tower.
As the nationalists saw helicopters on the horizon - they prepared for them.
They would not quietly allow these dirty foreigners onto their soil - they prepared MANPADS launchers, preparing to fire off anti-air guided missiles as soon as they entered range.

However, the actual assault on the Port was stopped due to the artillery bombardment - it would have to resume once reinforcements from Havenbrook arrive, which was coming in force.
Likewise, President Voss and the Minister of Defense decided to throw in additional reinforcements - leaving the north dangerously exposed to the Communists.

Sylvanhaym Naval Garrison
“LNS Sol, this is the Sylvanhaym Naval Garrison. The port of Galen is a no-go zone. There is active fighting in the area which has crippled local infrastructure. You are being redirected to Innsholm, to the north. Welcome to the fight.”

The Helicopters activated the Anti-Air countermeasures and did their best to avoid the AA, unfortunately, of the 7 helicopters, 2 were hit, with one being destroyed, with the 8 soldiers that was carrying being Reported 4 KIA and 4 MIA. The teams that managed to land regrouped and raided SNF artillery positions and then Retreat before reinforcements could arrive. A gunfight broke out between the raiders and the defenders

STRUSRITH
INDEPENDENT CITY OF, FEDERAL KINGDOM OF ARDENIA

1-1 PRELUDE

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

The stress was evident on each man's face - a turnpike, quick, classified, meeting, between the leaders of the two biggest political parties, military command, and the Prime Minister. They all knew the score - soldiers had collected them, thrown them into a bunker on the orders of the PM, then, they would deliberate.

Their only course of action was clear. The stuffy command bunker positively reeked of old concrete and sweat - and, for once, the two parties agreed. And with a mutual handshake, Ardenia would be going to war.

ESG-37

Expeditionary Strike Group 37.

Expeditionary Strike Group 37.

He played around with the name in his head as he - the Commodore, looked on at his forces. A undersupplied expeditionary carrier - a single missile destroyer, a motley collection of aircraft and attack helicopters, the main forces responsible for the evacuation. He only had a single Marine Expeditionary Brigade - Command had promised him a carrier group in the coming months, but it was clear.

They had gotten a unsustainable and impossible objective. Over 10,000 foreign nationals, and they had too little time, too little forces, and within weeks, the Embassy was at risk of falling. Intelligence had already vectored in signals aircraft to take a look at the situation - and, well, if their ROE was this restrictive, he wagered that they could only get 3,000 or so out.

The rest would be left to the tender mercies of fundamentalists.

And as ECM and EW and noise filled the airwaves, as a message screamed into scattered governmental centers, as Special Operations geared up for the biggest and most dangerous operation of their life, as distant aircraft awaited orders, as helicopters screamed overhead, a feeling filled the Commodores heart.

Dread.

Fear.

They couldn't do enough.

THIS IS ESG-37 OF THE ARDENIAN FEDERAL NAVY.

WE ARE HERE TO ESTABLISH THE FOLLOWING

1. AIR CORRIDORS FOR EVACUATION OF ARDENIAN NATIONALS
2. SECURING PORTS AND GROUND CORRIDORS FOR THE EVACUATION OF ARDENIAN NATIONALS
3. EVACUATION OF THE ARDENIAN EMBASSY.

ANY INTERFERENCE WILL BE MET WITH BY FORCE.

TO THE LEGITIMATE GOVERNMENT OF SYLVARIA

ESG-37 IS HERE TO LAUNCH OPERATIONS IN SUPPORT OF YOUR GOVERNMENT. REQUESTING PERMISSION TO SECURE THE NEAREST PORT.

37 SENDS.

Port Galen
The situation was devolving quickly.
Skirmishes between nationalist forces and foreign Special Forces were rapidly increasing in intensity - the Nationalists were now bringing in reinforcements from the captured city of Havenbrook, who were just an hour away.

To make matters far worse, Command ordered the Armored brigade stationed there to pull back to the port to the north - it was clear that the government considered Port Galen a lost cause, leaving the small garrison and the Anarusian forces to try to hold off 5,000 Nationalists - with more on the way from the south.
Even if Port Galen could be held, it could not sustain the logistics necessary to keep the port open - it can no longer be used as a port without massive repairs, repairs which the government could no longer afford.

This left only Innsholm as the sole government-controlled port on mainland Sylvaria.
With the threat posed from Havenbrook, Sylvanhaym was ordered under martial law - government forces secured every point on the island, and began to prepare for a long war.

Sylvanhaym
The President’s plane touched down on the island - with Voss out of the capital, it marked a transition in the government’s war strategy.
Still, Voss was bitter - she did not want to leave the capital behind, even though it was still well-defended.

13 miles north of Siladen City.
The first true clashes between government troops and UPM soldiers would break out along the same highway. The convoy which had been advancing approached a barricade - the government forces, roughly a platoon of infantry, held their watch over the road. It would not be enough.

As 2 dozen 8-wheeled armored reconnaissance vehicles advanced, they began to open fire - using anti-tank rockets with liberal discretion.
But they would fan out, into a wide formation - using their autocannons to shred the fortification.
The Government forces were forced into a rout, pulling back further to Siladen city - but they were greatly outnumbered, and cut off from the capital by the Communists.
The news of the capture of Havenbrook only further demoralized the troops guarding the city.
It was only a matter of time before the city fell to advancing UPM troops.

The impending doom on the Anarusians was inevitable : other 5 000 men were coming, and reinforcements weren't coming, General Kabrovic decided to evacuate the port, considered lost, and save as many men as possible. First the few raider teams, that managed to destroy other 10 artillery positions, sent to attack were recalled to the base, the attack costed 55 men dead, 20 injured and 4 MIA, but at least did a distraction for the SNF. Anarusian troops started to re-board the ships, with the remaining Sylvarian forces being used as guards to the operation. Few units were assigned to delay the inevitable fall of Port Galen that would be completely destroyed, but at least they would save the rest of the garrison.

in the meantime, SNF troops were advancing to inflict the final blow on port Galen.
