Police Nationale in Qahrania is the national civilian law enforcement agency. Founded in 2003 (following the merging of the Gendarmerie and the Civil Police), the Police Nationale is responsible for traffic enforcement, anti-gang and drug operations as well as counter-terrorism in conjunction with the armed forces and intelligence services. The special forces section of the police is known as the Special Intervention Group.
The Police Nationale has a reputation for brutality, and was responsible for the deaths of 48 people during the suppression of the Arab Spring riots during 2011. In 2019, anti-French protests lead by hardline Islamist clerics were met with a violent response, killing several. In July 2023, anti-racism activists staged demonstrations outside the French Embassies following the police killing of an Algerian citizen in that country; the protests were dispersed via water cannon.
In late July 2023, three police officers were killed when two Islamists, armed with rifles and grenades, attacked their convoy.
