It sounds like others are taking advantage of the strife in Iran to make a bid for power themselves... civil war may be brewing if this continues. Could I ran end up like Yugoslavia?

Rafsanjani is not the Supreme Leader, but he is a very high ranking person in Iran and his family are important and highly respected. This is a serious escalation of hostilities.

This is not good. If the Guardian Council starts falling out with itself, the whole government could simply rupture.

The end result might be a better Iran, but a lot of people will die in the meantime.

I doubt it. That's more likely Iraq's future. Iran doesn't have the ethnic and territorial divides that Yugoslavia did.

It's more likely that if this is not either crushed or resolved, Iran could end up with another violent revolution like the one that put the current regime into power. I heard one foreign intelligence expert on MSNBC yesterday saying that the nightly call-and-answer chants of "Allah akhbar!" on the city rooftops were an act of defiance at the start of the Islamic revolution, too.

Which military? The actual army has the reputation of being pretty professional/secular, but the Guard and Morality units...

While Iran is not divided Yugoslavia-style, it has some significant minorities in its periferal terrotories:

Khuzestan: almost all of Iran's Arabian minority is concentrated in this segregationist South-Western part of the land.

Azer-Beidjan: significant ethnically Turkish minority in the North-East. Related to the former Soviet republic, but less segregationist. Presidential candidate Moussavi belongs to this minority, by the way.

Additionally, there is the problem with narcotics. Its proximity to Afghanistan has given Iran unfettered access to opium and opiates. In the east of the country, "opium is the religion of the people" (with a jest to Mr Marx' famous aphorism). In all seriousness though, in the east there is not a single family without one or two addicts. Even Yugoslavia never had to cope with that.

If you want to draw comparisons, I'd propose Romania 1988.

If it came to revolution, most of the Army would likely side with the reformers, however a number would support the current government.

Unfortunately, the entirety of the Republican Guard (which is probably even stronger than the army now a days) would side with the current government.

However, Mousavi has called for national strikes, starting with the petrol business. That will cripple the government.

Of the people respond to it, certainly.
But strikes can be broken up, and the incumbent government seems more than willing to do so.

As a side note, I forgot to mention, in my previous entry, the minorities of the Kurds, the Baha'i, and the Zoroastrians.
