Wrong House Demolished, Let's Discuss Whose Fault It Is

Imagine coming home one day and realising that you don't have one. Well that's what happened to this Sydney man in yesturday, when a demolition crew demolitied the wrong house in the suburb of Bankstown. Yes that's right, the idiots in the demolition company destroyed the wrong house.

The owner of the house, Steve Ballas, was saving that house as an investment property and had hopes to rent it out, when a team of bulldozers showed up and tore it down. Although, to give Daniel's Demolition, the company who was commissioned to destroy the property, the letter box did have the wrong numbers on it, and Mr. Ballas did believe that he owned 200 Marion St, the house which was supposed to be destroyed, but still, you would think that they had some kind of plans and knew exactly which has was supposed to come down, before sending a friken' bulldozer through it. Thankfully nobody was inside at the time, otherwise these idiots could have injured someone! Seriously! If you don't know which house you're destroying, you shouldn't be destroying any! Bloody hell! How does something like this even happen?
Anyway, what's your take on this, NSG?

Let's discuss who's fault it is:

The Demolition Company-You should not destroy a building if you're relying on a letter box number
The owner of house 200- When your house became 200, you should have COMPLETELY removed the 202 from the letter box
The owner who's house got destroyed- Honestly, look at your council rates notices and see the number 198
The council (county)- For allowing this confusion to happen. Obviously for him to have 200 and the next door neighbour to have 202, the council would have obviously either changed the street numbers, and/or not made them clear enough, so that somebody (especially if he doesn't live there) who own a property is confused about which property he owns

EDIT: The owner did NOT live at the house which was destroyed

I mean they should have been competent enough to guess this house was the wrong one when they tore into it and found furniture, but I guess not. Put these guys in jail for a night and have the company fix the problem and rebuild it, compensate, etc.

That doesn't seem to be the case. Apart from anything else, I would assume they would ATLEAST need a picture and a description of the house and the size of the land in order to destroy it, and the two, by the looks of things, were completely different sizes, but I do not work in the construction industry, and cannot confirm the requirements for destroying a house

This only happened yesterday. As there (probably) have been no previous precedents, I doubt that they would know what the law will require of them, or even if there is a law regarding such circumstances
