John Glenn has died

Postby Thermodolia » Thu Dec 08, 2016 1:50 pm

So 2016 strikes again taking yet another victim. This time astronaut and former senator John Glenn.

John Glenn has died at the age of 95 according to the Ohio State University.
He was hospitalized yesterday.

John was the first American to orbit the earth and served in WWII as a marine pilot. After his service as an astronaut and marine he served as a US senator for Ohio from 1974-1999.

He will be missed, especially by me as he was one of my heroes.

Rest in Peace, Senator Glenn.
"Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." - President Abraham Lincoln.

A shame that the first generation of astronauts are in their twilight years in a world that hasn't gone much further in the realms of manned spaceflight since their time in orbit. Our scientific advances may be many, but our need to explore goes on. May our civilizations honor these people by choosing to continue the path towards multiplanetary culture.

Marines aren't violent killers. Astronauts are pretty damn great because I'd like to be able to get off this rock, not all legislators are incompetent.

I'm sorry to see him go, John Glenn is one of my personal heroes. It will be a long time before any man or woman will come close to matching the contributions he made to humanity.
The necessity of a navy, in the restricted sense of the word, springs, therefore, from the existence of a peaceful shipping, and disappears with it, except in the case of a nation which has aggressive tendencies, and keeps up a navy merely as a branch of the military establishment. 1
1Alfred T. Mahan, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783, 12th ed. (Boston: Little Brown and Company, 1890), 26.

Please avoid conflating my in-character role playing with what I actually believe, as these are usually quite different things.

Astronauts push the boundaries of human knowledge and exploration.

As to "incompetent", do you have any evidence that Glenn was an incompetent Senator other than trite, tired, knee-jerk "all politicians are bad" swill? The kind that normalizes bad politicians and undermines democracy by telling us we shouldn't expect any better?

If you're going to come into a memorial thread to insult the dead man, you should at least have real reasons for it. Besides wallowing in your own cynicism and pretending you're making some profound point.

Man, I must be thinking of a different marine. My bad. But yeah, no other country has spacemen so I guess they make america great. Maybe Trump should just give everyone a spacesuit.

I'm not insulting him. I've never even heard of him. I'm refuting the notion that astronauts, marines, and senators make america a great nation, which, you have to admit, is a pretty weird thing to say.

They all contribute to making America a stronger and better country if they do their job well.

Do you have any evidence that Glenn was incompetent or corrupt at what he did? Because I don't.

Again, I never said that lol. I'm just replying to something stupid that someone said.

although now that you mention corruption.....

Glenn was one of the five U.S. senators caught up in the Lincoln Savings and Keating Five Scandal after accepting a $200,000 contribution from Charles Keating. Glenn and Republican senator John McCain were the only senators exonerated. The Senate Commission found that Glenn had exercised "poor judgment".

He was exonerated, as your own quote says.

Poor judgement, yes, but everyone shows that from time to time.
