One China or Free Taiwan?

Postby The Portland Territory » Fri Dec 02, 2016 7:39 pm

Recently, the media went mad over Trump because he spoke with Taiwanese President Tsai. Why? Well, that's because we've pretty much cut all diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1979 and adopted a One China policy, meaning that the US Government recognizes Taiwan as a part of the PRC. This has also gotten the media mad because it could even further break a fragile relationship with the Chinese, given that they claim Taiwan as their own as well.

So, here I am, again, asking the NSG this: Should Taiwan be a part of the PRC, or should it be independent? Personally, I think it should be free given that they legally founded their own nation and it's citizens (at the time, mostly now as well) wanted to be seperate from the communist government.

They are independent, they are the true China, the PRC are just a bunch of commies that will fall.

The RoC, the true name of Taiwan, is the true government of china. The PRC is a rebel force in control of ROC territory.

At this point, are they rebels anymore though? I get what you're saying, and you're right in many ways, but both governments have evolved a lot over the years

Honestly, we need Taiwan to kind of hang out in its position, when the mainland's communist fall; the great Republic of China, established in 1911 by Sun Yat-sen and the revolutionaries who overthrew the Qing Dynasty, can restore a democratic multi-party system to both the mainland and Taiwan.

Main problem, Taiwan doesn't claim to be part of the PRC, in fact, it's basically the Nationalist Government in exile.

I don't think they'd want to be part of the PRC.

There are a few members of it's legislature that are for Chinese unification, actually. They dont have a majority, but it seems like theyre pretty prominent

Everything is about Trump. Trump is everywhere. you cant stump the trump

And on the subject, I believe Taiwan should be a country. It's the descendant of the actual republic of China, the non-Communist rebel China.

I prefer to see Taiwan as an independent nation. It isn't the "Legitimate" China as the PRC has control of over 99% of the country, but an independent Taiwan of independent interests, economy, relations, and U.N. recognition can happen. It's funny we are supplying arms to them, despite the U.S. not recognizing the Republic of Taiwan.
