What job: secure job or more luxurious job

Postby Socialist Tera » Sun Aug 28, 2016 9:23 am

I am starting a series of threads where I ask questions that are interesting and we can debate which choice is better and why it would be better. Usually, threads are about news or politics but not about choices in life which I find this thread to be an interesting concept. You are unemployed, thankfully, you get two interviews, one jobs is more secure but pays less, the other is more competitive pays more and offers advancement if you do well but will fire you if you do badly. They are both your dream job, whatever it may be.

What job would you pick and why? I would pick secure because I don't like the risk of being fired for reaching bosses expectation.

I'd pick the secure job; I'm a low maintenance person and don't need to spend that much money to be satisfied, but I am not the most charismatic or convincing person, which would make finding another job if I lost the unstable, well-paid one much more difficult for me. Well, I'd do my job well regardless so getting fired for being a slacker or fucking up regularly isn't what I'm afraid of, but being laid off because my workplace is no longer profitable enough is very low on my list of things I want to happen.

Speaking as someone who is unemployed, I would rather have a boring job at a factory where I can work until I retire then a job eating ice cream and playing with puppies with unlimited access to there internet with a 1000$ vida game budget that can be taken away by someone stepping on a leaf somewhere.

It depends on the exact pay and the likelihood of being laid off. General statements such as "x pays more but y is more secure" isn't nearly enough to make a decision.

It is simply a question on whether you would take a more secure or luxurious job. Since there was no information posted it simply what they will say, it comes down to philosophy. It is similar to the question, would you take free food or pay for food.

Both are my dream job? Secure.

I would rather have a constant steady job going, especially if its one i like/really want to do, i would not mind getting less money out of it if i like it and its going to stick around.

I'd take the secure job. The prospect of advancement doesn't really appeal to me, because I just don't want to be bothered with the hassle of a supervisory or managerial role, I'd rather be just another cog in the machine.

Taking the secure job since I would not be risking competitiveness for my transition. Reliable income is necessary.

I wouldn't be worried about the competition considering that the fact most people would rather have a secure job over a competitive job, which says something about the mindset of the vast majority of people.

To start out where advancement is possible often leads to a path where sociopaths are more likely to be encountered and thus more likely to trample over you leading to a career demise.
