Zaxumadi General Election 2016

Postby Zaxumadi » Sun Jun 26, 2016 3:21 pm

Zaxumadi General Election 2016

This year, on Thursday the 14th of July, the Madian public holiday of Freedom Day, the 5th democratic General Election in the Republic of Zaxumadi will take place. The vote will occur on two separate ballots that any citizen registered to vote aged 18 or over may vote on, with these two ballots being one for President and one towards the 100 seat General Assembly, determined by a proportional representation (PR) system. Local elections will occur in two years time toward the election of Governors, Mayors and local Councillors. The next general Election would then be in 5 years time in 2021, or earlier should a political emergency lead the President or Constitutional Court to call an early election, or a highly deadlocked legislature lead the President to call one.

While The election will ultimately be determined by the voting citizens of Zaxumadi (OOC: here read me), any outside citizen, organisation and / or national government may declare in favour for any of the parties, including multiple parties.

Political donation from both within and outside of the nation are banned however, and a governmental organisation, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) ensures that all popularly mandated parties, those that have secured over 5 000 signatures (or about 0.1% of the total population) of support from citizens over the age of 18, have equal access to official campaign advertising sites throughout the nation and equal airtime on state tv and radio for advertising. These popularly mandated parties are also allocated an equal amount of funds to pay a core staff, although all campaigns rely mostly on unpaid volunteers. Leadership debates between the candidates of any party with any seats in the National Assembly (currently 5 parties) will also be held.

Should no Presidential candidate win over 50% of the Presidential vote, a runoff election will be called between the top two candidates to be held the following week, on Thursday the 21st of July. This has never happened before however, due to the popular support of the MILI, the party most associated with both Zaxumadi's independence from Lyseria and with the overthrow of the Nozani regime (military leader who took over in coup and ruled in military state as the unelected Prime Minister from 24 January 1973 to 7 April 1996). If a Presidential candidate should win over 50% of the Presidential vote, they will officially take up the office on Sunday the 17th of July, the public holiday of People's Day.

Current Political Situation

Presidente Adjunto Cristina Xhonda hopes to take over as the natural successor of the current President, Presidente Shalia Nxeba, who has served her full two 5 year terms as limited by the Zaxumadi Constitution. The MILI continues to do well politically, supporting a message of socialistic upliftment of the poor and social progressivism, while slowly adapting to more freeing up of small private businesses. Despite this, and despite being expected to be returned to government with a majority, the MILI is expected to be returned with a reduced majority as it faces steadily growing opposition.

The MILI's main traditional opponent, the socially conservative and economically capitalistic Boka nationalists of the FPN, are also expected to see a reduced outcome however. The old guard rural party, led by Gobernador de Zaboka Pedro Banzinde and pushing to impose prison sentences of gay people, is failing to win over the younger generations while steadily losing its old traditionalist conservative voters to old age or other parties.

The socially liberal and economically moderate PL under MP Santiago Mozedeni, who occupy the political centre, are expected to pick up votes with their reformist message of freeing up the economic landscape while also working with the MILI to promote personal freedoms.

The Marxist-Leninist and socially conservative MAIZ fight to promote a fierce hold to a state controlled economy and a return to traditional social values, with the 'curing' of gay people. They are expected to slip somewhat in votes due to there appeal to older poorer voters and poor appeal amongst younger and more social progressive ones.

The small far-right white nationalist PPGL, led by MP Marcos Carretero, their lone MP in the National Assembly, are expected to maintain most of their small but loyal fringe white nationalist electorate, but are not expected to pick up any votes in the overwhelmingly black African nation.

Amongst the parties not currently in parliament, the social democratic PPS, led by former MILI MP Bantu Holomamba, hopes to use his popularity amongst the Boka voters of MILI, as well as appealing to be a more moderate and centrist reformer than MILI while still aiming at social upliftment, to win votes.

The PPS is the only one of the parties not currently in parliament expected to pick up any seats. The other four appear just too small and just to fringe to win significant enough support for a seat (around 1% of the total legislature ballot vote to win per seat).

Zaxumadi expatriates in Ventalia have expressed initial support for the PL, PPS, and PM, though do wish a greater amount of information about each party's platform be made available before votes are cast.

The majority of the people and the government of South Africa support the MILI for re-election.

Tomorrow night the first leadership debate between the 5 candidates of the parties with representation in the National Assembly will take place in Universidad Mabansando (UM) in the northern industrial city of Mabansando in Provincia Zaboka. This will be the first of two planned debates of this nature, with the potential of a third onw.

Before this however, a separate debate between the candidates of the other 5 other candidates will occur tonight at Universidad Mizweka Nuzwende (UMN) in the small northern coastal city of Mazimbelo in Provincia Zaboka.

Summary of the Leadership Debate last night (parties not in National Assembly):
Universidad Mizweka Nuzwende (UMN) in Mazimbelo, Provincia Zaboka

former MP Bantu Holomamba: Holomamba has promised to guide the nation forward along a more moderate path. While committing himself to protecting the strong public sector, particularly public education, healthcare and housing, and defending social freedoms, such as legal marijuana and gay marriage, Holomamba vowed to do more to cut regulations and free up space for small and medium sized businesses to grow. Holomamba also proposed that the government provide special limited tax exemptions to local small and medium size businesses, as a way of boosting the economy and reducing taxes on these "valuable members of society as a way to create employment and growth".

Guillermo Tendero: Tendero emphasised the need to cut taxes and to set about on significant semi-privatisation of all parts of the public sector, including education and healthcare, as a way to create a competitive private industry to boost the economy. Tendero supported keeping gay marriage as legal. However Tendero argued that recreational marijuana should be banned as a product that was damaging to society, although he argued that medical marijuana should remain legal. Tendero also argued that the spending on both the police and the military should be increased to keep Zaxumadi safe in these dangerous times.

Imam Mohammed Abbas: Abbas vowed to establish Sharia law through democratic means to Zaxumadi. Abbas argued in favour of the tenants of charity promoted in the Quran as a basis for the establishment of a democratic Islamic Socialist state, that would ensure all people remained well off. He argued for overturning the section in the constitution that established Zaxumadi as a state wherein "No religion shall be favoured or given preference or special treatment over any other, nor shall any religion be favoured or given preference or special treatment over a lack of religion", to be replaced with a section that established Islam as the official state religion, with the freedom for other religions and a lack of religion to be practised, although to preferred. Abbas also argued to ban gay marriage and have homosexuality as a crime punishable by life imprisonment, argued that prostitution and marijuan usage should be banned and that any who accessed either or operated these industries should be faced with life imprisonment as well. Abbas's message was not me with much popularity.

Elder Xoxixana Xixumbe: Xixumbe spoke only in the old traditional form of the xuuXanani language, and so had to be translated. The traditional village elder had walked the entire way from his village in the mountains of Xixanga to the city of Mazimbelo, due to his opposition to motorised vehicles. Xixumbe argued for a return to the traditional ways of life, and argued for a ban on motorised vehicles and a steady move away from electricity and other such modern appliances. Xixumbe argued that these appliances tore people away from the true spirits and angered the spirits of their ancestors. Xixumbe also argued for the importance of close knit community living where all wealth was shared equally and where the success of every individual in the community was equally vital for the "heart of the community" to remain healthy. Xixumbe argued strongly in favour of personal freedoms of the non-industrial sort however, arguing that all people should be able to love who they chose, an argument in favour of gay marriage, and that the use of marijuana and other traditional plants must be respected and remain legal, for medical, recreational and spiritual purposes.

Juan Pina: Pina argued for the massive reduction in the size of government. He argued that the public sector must be nearly entirely privatised, including a complete privatisation of education, healthcare, police (to be replaced with community watch groups) and the military (to be replaced with voluntary national guard and privately hired mercenary defence forces run by businessmen to defend the nation). Pina argued that the only job of government should be to ensure that disputes over private property were handled properly and fairly. All prisons, roads, public utilities (water, electricity, etc) would be privatised under a Pina administration, as well as appointing top business leaders to the cabinet, while abolishing their actual ministries and have them act more as advisors to the private sector. Pina argued that all personal freedoms should be legalised, that any type of weapon should be allowed to be sold to any citizen not in a private prison, and that the same should apply in regards to all types of drugs. Pina also expressed that he supported all instances of consenting sex, including homosexuality and polygamy. When pushed on the matter he expressed his support, despite his personal misgivings with, incest and necrophilia where the person had consented to having their body used before death.

Summary of the Leadership Debate, Wednesday the 29th of June:
Universidad Mabansando (UM) in Mabansando, Provincia Zaboka

Presidente Adjunto Cristina Xhonda: Xhonda started by invoking the memory of her father, Sheie Xhonda, one of the founding figures of the MILI, its political leader during the War of Independence against Lyseria and the Provisional President of the newly named Zaxumadi from independence on the 8th of August 1972 to his overthrow in a violent military coup on the 2nd of January 1973. Xhonda spoke of her father's hope to see a Zaxumadi in which all people could succeed and flourish, and where the poverty and damage of the past could be repaired. She vowed to fight to ensure his dream has upheld and more truly achieved. In addition to this however, Xhonda argued that the dream of her father must not just become a reality, but once this reality was achieved the nation must continue to dream and plan for a future.

In addition to vowing to uphold the Zaxumadi constitution, Xhonda vowed to uphold the socialistic upliftment policies of the MILI, defend and expand social freedoms for the LGBTQIA community, defend the legality of marijuana and sex work and ensure greater protections for sex workers. Xhonda also committed herself to environmentalism and to ensuring Zaxumadi used and continued to transition to sustainable clean energy in the form of solar and wind energy.

In addition to this however, Xhonda stated that she and the MILI would increase subsidies to small local businesses to help them succeed and thrive and build up the economy. She cited a marked growth in wealth during her time as Vice President as a sign that she and her party had proven themselves as capable of achieving this growth. Xhonda insisted however that she would respect the old maxim of her father, that "the wealth of a nation should be determined by that of its poorest inhabitant, its happiness by its most downtrodden and its freedom by its most oppressed. Until we raise the standards of the lowest, we cannot truly have been said to have bought about change".

Gobernador de Zaboka Pedro Banzinde: Banzinde attacked the MILI for "over 20 years of failure and poverty", arguing that their "socialistic and overly centralised policies" of the MILI had "failed utterly". Banzinde vowed to slash taxes across the board, particularly on "the overtaxed farmers", "cut away as much of the excessive existing government regulation on businesses as possible", and instituted significant privatisation of the public sector, in healthcare and education, and completely slash funding to welfare and housing. Banzinde vowed to cut all funding to green energy and slash all "nonsense" environmental regulations, and instead invest in coal energy, reinvigorating the local coal mining industry. Banzinde also promised to drastically increase the size of the army and police in "these turbulent times", as well as imposing 2 years of national conscription for all straight men over 18.

On the social side, Banzinde vowed to return to traditional values. He vowed to end the constitutional position that gave no preference of any religion over the other or over a lack of religion and instead make Roman Catholicism the state religion. Banzinde vowed to ban gay marriage and impose life imprisonment for gay people, ban marijuana usage and ban prostitution, bringing life sentences for prostitutes. He also vowed to bring back capital punishment for murder, rape and treason. Banzinde also vowed to tighten border controls and keep out "unskilled foreigners and violent Islamic terrorists".

Politically, Banzinde argued for increased federalisation, and argued for increased powers toward the traditional Boka monarchy in Zaboka province, arguing that the monarchy should be allowed to choose 50 traditional leaders to be sent to the National Assembly.

MP Santiago Mozedeni: Mozedeni highlighted the importance of freedom, and argued that the MILI had created a sluggish and bloated economy. He vowed to create prosperity but cutting "the more excessive regulations of the MILI" and lowering taxes significantly across the board, particularly towards the middle class. Mozedeni argued that these cuts would come with a steady move to partial but significant privatisation of the public sector, including education and healthcare. Mozedeni argued that this must come while it was still ensured that enough social protections were kept for the poorest.

On the social side Mozedeni committed himself to protecting and expanding LGBTQIA rights, keeping marijuana legal and keeping sex work legal. Mozedeni argued that freedom, both economic freedom and personal freedom, was paramount.

MP Vinde Xongo: Xongo vowed to ensure that the economy would come under complete state control, and argued against the "counter revolutionary neoliberal reforms of the MILI". Xongo stated that as President he would ensure that the military and police were expanded and built up to defend the nation. He argued for tighter state control over education, healthcare and housing, and argued that welfare should be stripped back to use these funds in national defence. Xongo called for 5 years national conscription for all straight men and women over the age of 18. Xongo also vowed to turn more so to coal for energy, partly as a way to reinvigorate the local coal mining industry.

On the social side Xongo argued to ban gay marriage and set about on compulsory 'curing' of gay people. They also vowed to ban marijuana usage and prostitution. Xongo also vowed to ban gambling and end other "excesses of privilege and wealth". Xongo also promised to tighten border controls and keep out unskilled foreigners. Xongo also called for capital punishment for murder, rape and treason.

On the political side, Xongo argued that leaders of major Trade Unions in Zaxumadi should be able to allocate 100 additional seats to the National Assembly.

MP Marcos Carretero: Carretero argued that the "MILI communist regime has utterly wrecked our proud nation of Guinea Lyserio". The MP insisted on calling the nation by its old colonial name of Guinea Lyserio, and vowed that as President he would see the nation reunify with Lyseria, the nation that started colonising what would become Zaxumadi in 1527, before eventually rapidly pulling out in 1972, shortly after the end of a civil war in Lyseria and its transition to constitutional monarchism. Carretero swore his loyalty to the king of Lyseria, and spoke of how mush better things had been under Lyserian rule.

On the economic side, Carretero vowed to fight for capitalistic enterprise, and argued for complete privatisation on education and healthcare. He argued for creating independent white Lyserian-Madi military and police forces and the significant funding of them. They called for two years national conscription to this white military force by all white straight men over the age of 18. Carretero argued for complete economic and political unity with Lyseria, and argued that this would mean ending membership in the AU (African Union) and cutting many of the strongest ties with the AU.

On the social side, Carretero called for a ban on gay marriage and the 'curing' of gay people. He also called to ban on marijuana and prostitution, with up to life imprisonment for partaking in either. He vowed to end the constitutional position that gave no preference of any religion over the other or over a lack of religion and instead make Roman Catholicism the state religion. Carretero also vowed to tighten border controls and keep out "unskilled African foreigners and other dangerous outsiders, such as fundamentalist Muslim Jihadists".

Other key debate highlights to follow soon.

Most heated debate of the Leadership Debate, Wednesday the 29th of June:
Universidad Mabansando (UM) in Mabansando, Provincia Zaboka

Presidente Adjunto Cristina Xhonda and Gobernador de Zaboka Pedro Banzinde got into a heated argument over Banzinde's comments that "the MILI have brought us over 20 years of failure and poverty". Xhonda hit back by attacking Banzinde for his role as Minister of Finance during the long lasting dictatorial Nozani regime, that ruled from the 3rd of January 1973, when it violently overthrew and executed her father -provisional President Sheie Xhonda, until it itself collapsed on the 7th of April 1996, faced with massive protests and popular MILI rebel forces seizing back power by force. Xhonda argued that, "while there is still a far way to go, the MILI has successfully built a working society for all in the ruins of the nation that the Nozani regime left behind. As the man who counted the wealth stolen by the regimes thugs, before syphoning it off to funding those very thugs and ensuring they were armed to fulfil their difficult job of murdering innocent people and executing freedom fighters, I would expect Gobernador Banzinde to remember the damage he helped create. And, let me say, given his history I have no intent, desire or reason to listen to his financial advise after he helped tear this nation apart to feed his megalomaniac mentors army of thugs and set back our economic prospects decades".

Banzinde argued that this was "ancient history" and that Xhonda "has to dig about in the past to find anything to excuse her party's failures". Xhonda hit back, stating that "the damage and horrors you left are far from ancient history, they are still felt deeply by many people today".

The MAIZ have suffered a blow today after a falling apart between their leader MP Vinde Xongo and leader of the Construction Worker's Union Xembe Tamxiwe. The fallout came after Tamxiwe's daughter came out as gay a while ago, pressuring her father to soften his social policy on homosexuality, which had long been that of compulsory treatment of their 'disease', a view consistent with MAIZ's official policy. Tamxiwe has now moved his position and supports the continued legality of gay marriage and reportedly approached Xongo on softening MAIZ's official policy, to be one that allowed for a greater range of stances and a general move to accepting gay relationships. Xongo's response was reportedly hostile, leading to Tamxiwe, who is very popular in the union, to endorse the MILI. The move is expected to hurt the MAIZ, who are already struggling to win new support while facing a steady drop in their current support.
