This year, on Thursday the 14th of July, the Madian public holiday of Freedom Day, the 5th democratic General Election in the Republic of Zaxumadi will take place. The vote will occur on two separate ballots that any citizen registered to vote aged 18 or over may vote on, with these two ballots being one for President and one towards the 100 seat General Assembly, determined by a proportional representation (PR) system. Local elections will occur in two years time toward the election of Governors, Mayors and local Councillors. The next general Election would then be in 5 years time in 2021, or earlier should a political emergency lead the President or Constitutional Court to call an early election, or a highly deadlocked legislature lead the President to call one.
While The election will ultimately be determined by the voting citizens of Zaxumadi (OOC: here read me), any outside citizen, organisation and / or national government may declare in favour for any of the parties, including multiple parties.
Political donation from both within and outside of the nation are banned however, and a governmental organisation, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) ensures that all popularly mandated parties, those that have secured over 5 000 signatures (or about 0.1% of the total population) of support from citizens over the age of 18, have equal access to official campaign advertising sites throughout the nation and equal airtime on state tv and radio for advertising. These popularly mandated parties are also allocated an equal amount of funds to pay a core staff, although all campaigns rely mostly on unpaid volunteers. Leadership debates between the candidates of any party with any seats in the National Assembly (currently 5 parties) will also be held.
Should no Presidential candidate win over 50% of the Presidential vote, a runoff election will be called between the top two candidates to be held the following week, on Thursday the 21st of July. This has never happened before however, due to the popular support of the MILI, the party most associated with both Zaxumadi's independence from Lyseria and with the overthrow of the Nozani regime (military leader who took over in coup and ruled in military state as the unelected Prime Minister from 24 January 1973 to 7 April 1996). If a Presidential candidate should win over 50% of the Presidential vote, they will officially take up the office on Sunday the 17th of July, the public holiday of People's Day.
