And there is most certainly no one who records the actions of individuals and then abducts them at precisely 2:07 AM and takes them to a room in the basement of the police building for a secret trial with no jury in which the punishment is water torture and then deportation to alpine prison camps.

The Imperium's equivalent of a secret police is Domestic Security - which isn't really that secret, being a rather visible paramilitary police force.

DomSec is tasked with operating the mass surveillance network throughout the Imperium, running correctional facilities, and prosecuting high crimes Imperium-wide. Unlike Urban Security forces, which only have authority in their respective jurisdictions, Domestic Security has unlimited Jurisdiction throughout the Imperium.

Among the areas of focus for Domestic Security are political crimes - sedition, promotion of un-Sidh views and ideas, and other subversive activities.

Despite having a reputation of ruthlesness, Domestic Security mostly handles cases of political dissent in a rather civil, even dull, manner. A suspected dissident is summoned to the local precinct to explain his certain actions or remarks, explained why such thoughts or deeds are undesirable to society, and kindly asked to refrain from such words or actions in the future. In most cases, that is more than enough to convince would-be heretics to fall back in line with the official view - few are stubborn, brave or just plain stupid enough to test the patience of Domestic Security after their first warning.

As an organization, Domestic Security is in fact keenly interested in reforming rather than destroying dissenters, labour camps and executions being reserved for the most stubborn and unrepentant subversives. Most others can be cowed into obedience in a much more civil manner - if persuasion alone doesn't convince a dissenter to reform and renounce his heresies, then blackmail most often will. Keeping extensive records on every citizen, Domestic Security usually has enough dirt on most subversives to shut them up.

Finaglia does not like the term Secret Police. We prefer the term Internal Affairs. This of course under the Department of Homeland Security. We must save the proletariat from degenerative bourgeoisie practices. All agencies go after these subversives.

Bureau 1 deals with infiltrating and protecting the local Police forces from subversives with appropriate surveillance measures as needed.
Bureau 13 seeks out foreign spies where ever they may be found within Finaglia.
Bureau 86 deals with infiltrating and protecting the local government Administration (other than police) from subversives with appropriate surveillance measures as needed.
Bureau 369 deals with infiltrating and protecting the Educators at all levels from subversives with appropriate surveillance measures as needed.
We have as many bureaus as there are organizations to protect.
As of this date we have 462 active Bureaus.

Also, the Department of Diplomatic Endeavors For Chadtonia does hire private detectives from time to time, but these are not working directly for the government and are not a division of the Department.

OOC: Of course we do. Any government that says they don't is a disgusting love-fest doomed to meet a gruesome end or they're lying. The secret security services remove undesirables quietly and stealthily, and thanks to this we have far less "civil rights issues" than other nations. Nobody's found it curious that every time somebody prominent starts promoting "rights" not supported by the nation, that person "dies of natural causes" or "abandons the cause" soon after.

Yes. Actually a few, very small in size but very effectively. They're efficient, discreet and ruthless.

They're only answering the Head of Government (Usually the Prime Minister, currently the Royal Council) and the Regency.

In its own definition the Secret Police is not Shield and Sword but the Dagger of the Crown not used for widespread oppression, intimidation or torture but a discreet way to deal with hostile Elements who cannot be convinced or neutralized otherwise.

The Secret Police is deliberatly kept small in size as their objective is to deal with Enemies of the State and not going after the general Population.

They're doing the dirty, unfortunate but necessary work.

Their main Target are People who pose a iminent danger to the State and Nation. This includes naturally Terrorists, militant oppositionals, activists and other aggressive troublemakers.

It should be noted though that the Principality prefers other methods to deal with hostile elements.
