2017: Trial by Fire (OOC/Sign-Ups) [TG for Invite]

February 1st, 2017

World War III has ended with a massive amphibious assault by Russia, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Serbia, and Israel off the east coast of the United States in an effort to remove the increasingly aggressive Communist regime that had wreaked havoc, both globally and domestically. The assault, known as Operation Apocalypse, has brought an end to the regime and leaves the world with one question: war trials.

Clearly, Russia and her allies are the victors. They are free to do whatever they please with the United States on her knees. A large group of people in America have begged Russia that they be spared, as the government had been the aggressor, not the people. Putin spares the people, but leaves Russian troops in every state capitol and major city, along with Washington, to keep order. The absence of the oppressive government has led thousands of Americans to bring forth evidence that the American government had worked hand-in-hand with the United Nations, NATO, and the European Union in toppling governments around the world, and sponsoring terrorism in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Evidence continued to build weeks after the Russian occupation, and President Putin decided a large trial needed to be held in order to prove the people were telling the truth.

Putin, along with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Jordanian King Abdullah II, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, agreed that trials for incidents going back to the Iranian revolution in 1979 needed to be conducted, in order to prevent such from ever happening again . . .

*bangs gavel* All rise! And welcome to the RP! A prequel to "2020: Survivors", detailing the UN Trials that brought the UN, NATO, and the EU to their ultimate end for war crimes and crimes against humanity. You will play a leader, judge, witness, defendant, or lawyer, and try to persuade the rest of the world that you are right, or try to prove to the rest of the world that someone is wrong.

Rules

1. I am OP, and I will appoint co-OPs to those who rightfully deserve it.
2. You can play up to three characters.
3. Leaders not available for play: Bashar al-Assad and King Abdullah II (they're mine)
4. Godmodding, trolls, and one-liners will not be tolerated.
5. Court Behavior: I don't mind the occasional fistfight, but if someone brings a weapon, we're gonna have problems. Try to be civil, and keep cussing to a minimum in court. The judges' rule is final, and I will not tolerate whining in court unless you provide evidence.
6. Only the OP and co-OPs can present a new issue to the court, but no new issues will be presented until the current issue is resolved.
7. Petty fighting in the OOC will not be tolerated. When you're kicked, you're kicked, end of story.
8. Have fun.

Character App:

Character Name: Nabil Chidiac

Character Nationality: FSo Lebanon, established in 1992 by a ceasefire during the Syrian invasion of Lebanon, by giving the Christian parts of the Mount Lebanon and Northern governorates along with the South Lebanon Security belt to the Free State of Lebanon, and the rest of Lebanon to the Lebanese Republic, which was occupied by Syria until the Cedar Revolution.

Character Appearance:
Image

Character Role: Witness

Character Biography:
Born in 1960, Lebanon was engulfed in civil war by the time of his 15th birthday in 1975. Nabil join the (South) Lebanon Army division under Major Saad Haddad in 1982, at which time he was 22, and he served under commander Aql Hashem. Quickly rising in the ranks of the organization, he took command of the SLA intervention in the internal conflict of the Lebanese Forces, when turncoats Samir Geagea and Elie Hobeika tried to overthrow Fouad Abou Nader, successfully helping the LF loyalists, Guardians of the Cedars, and Kataeb Party defeat the treacherous units of the LF, becoming a hero among the SLA, and soon in 1992 an independent free state of Lebanon was established.

Leading recon missions into the Lebanese Republic to stop terrorist attacks, his forces witnessed many of the Syrian atrocities and crimes against humanity against the Lebanese people. Nabil became the second-in-command of the entire country in 2000 after the death of Aql Hashem in a terrorist attack, and then succeeded general Antoine Lahad after the latter's death to heart attack in 2015.

Character Personality: Reserved and quiet, and torn between testifying to defend Syria, a country that committed horrific crimes against his people, or testifying to defend the UN, who's "peacekeeping force" in Lebanon was responsible for the deaths of many of his comrades; Afraid that no matter which he testifies for, he will be hated in his homeland for defending one of them. Hopes for peace between Syria and FSo Lebanon, but wants FSo Lebanon and the Lebanese Republic to remain separate.

I recolour old portraits for most of my characters. This particular one was of an Argentinian politician named Ramos Mejía from the early 1900s.

Should Chidiac be categorized as a leader instead of a witness? Since he is the leader of a country...

I can add "leader" to "witness", if that works.

Yeah, that should work.

So who all have you invited? I know some people I could invite, if we're short on players.

You might consider limiting apps to directly involved nations (IE: USA, Libya, Russia, Iran) and organizations, as well as ones that are physically close to Syria, since otherwise people might start applying as random nations like, say, Estonia or something like that, that would have nothing to add to the trials, and we'd have a lot of players but few involved nations.

That makes a lot of sense. I know the fictional nation thing is a good idea, but I don't want that to be abused just because someone doesn't know anything about existing countries.

I do trust you to invite good people, because after what happened in the Third Gulf War RP, I'm going to be a bit more strict on who can join. Since I know you, German Reich (hopefully he can play as Putin), and a few others from past RPs, I'm not going to take my frustration out on you. (Seriously, that was sickest thing I had ever went through. I was so pissed at that guy, I didn't know what to do, so I just took a walk and tried to breathe.)

I'll add in a "nations needed" section.

Character App:

Character Name: Pjotr Davidovich Belyakov

Character Nationality: Crimean Autonomous Republic, Russian Federation

Character Appearance:
Image

Character Role: Lawyer for the Defence

Character Biography:
Pjotr Davidovich Belyakov. Now, there are many in both the US and the Russian Federation who know that name, although the former quite readily and quite understandably have trouble pronouncing his name. ‘Peter the Great’, so the American newspapers hail him. ‘Pjotr Turncoat’, the Russian papers brand him. His name his revered and reviled in entirely unequal measure, his simple appearance provoking much outrage in many parts of Eastern World and outside. During a stroll in Washington, he might both be hailed a hero and branded a criminal while still walking the same block. Where does this torn legacy come from?

In 2017, Pjotr was sworn in as the defence in a dozen or so cases of the infamous Washington War Tribunals. He was one of the few who actually volunteered for the position, and most other volunteers had family in the US or were promised handsome pay. Pjotr was one of the few who wrote down his own name in a form of honour-bound sense of duty. There wasn’t much his name could stand to gain from protecting American war criminals in a court of law, and the pay was not exactly up to par with the difficulty of the task. For this action, Pjotr earned the full scorn of many newspapers across the world, as well as the ire of the Russian people. While I private, the Russian government was quite supportive of him, in public, they dared not lay down a finger to protect their most infamous child.

His actions were brought forth, indeed, by a sense of legal duty. When the call came from the Russian foreign minister for capable lawyers for the many cases of the Tribunal, Pjotr mauled over the decision for many days. A few weeks went by before he finally made up his mind. On the one hand, he desperately wanted to do what was right and just. On the other hand, how could protecting criminals and genocidal maniacs in a court of law be constructed as just? That was what the public thought, too. In the end, Pjotr’s sense of moral duty won out over his fear for public outcry, and the volunteered for the position. For the occasion, he was accepted into the Russian army, just for the duration of the Tribunal, as a non-commissioned major. Soon after, he was shipped to Washington DC for the trials.

Don’t see this as a proof that Pjotr has some unexplained love for the US. In fact, he despises the state with all his heart. Like most Russian children, he was raised with a healthy scepticism of the United States and their communist ways. All the wars brought about by their greed and expansionism, the EU on their border playing the game of nuclear poker without a real end in sight, the NATO always ready to threaten Russian sovereignty… No, Pjotr has a special hatred in his heart for the US and her political class, especially the people he is sworn to protect. This leaves him internally divided over what is right and what is wrong, especially as he drudges through many of the witness reports on US war crimes.

Character Personality:
Pjotr is a deeply divided, conflicted individual. On one hand, he cannot stand violence. He is a pacifist through and through, and is very public in those beliefs. So, the US being the aggressor, he has no love at all for the leadership. Like many Russians, he is quite opposed to US imperialism and their foreign policy. Really, the only thing keeping him to his work is a sense of legal duty, that even the most hardened criminals deserve some form of legal counsel. With this attitude, he is trying to prove that the Russian model of legal equality can even stand the test of war and genocide, although his own nation doesn’t make it easy for them. There are plenty in the US who wish to see him removed, as the people of the US have even less love for their former communist overlords.

Although, people would do well to remember that there is no night in these dark days during which Pjotr doesn’t cry, doesn’t stare into the darkness of the night. And the bottle of whisky never goes a night untouched.

Character App:

Character Name: Norman Jayden

Character Nationality: if nation is fiction, provide a brief backstory on that nation) American, from New Hampshire

Character Appearance: (images or written descriptions are both acceptable)

Character Role: (leader, judge, witness, defendant, or lawyer) lawyer

Character Biography: (if your character is a real person, please do a little research on them if you know nothing about them) Norman graduated from Harvard with a graduates degree in law. He went on to work at a firm in Washington, where he represented local politicians in their petty disputes and fights. Norman knew he could be in a better job, so he created his own firm, Jayden Law Offices. He recruited staff mostly with his father's money, and set it up in DC, even though he did not appreciate the atmosphere of the US capitol.

He spent years working at his firm, making a steady income. He became popular in the DC social scene, and was known as a playboy for a time. His father, a stern and honest man, promptly sorted him out, and so Norman returned to his firm. When he was 30, he represented Colin Dent, a black man who was gunned down in downtown DC by a cop. Norman was chosen by the family mainly for his reputation as an honest and skilled lawyer. The case garnered national attention, and in the end Norman successfully won the case for the family of Colin Dent. However, despite the media recognition and heightened celebrity status that this gave, he was now an enemy to the DC police and even some in the radical left wing government.

When DC was occupied by Russian troops in 2017 after WW3, Norman was deeply disturbed. When he took a political science course at Harvard, (he never ventured deeper down this path) he developed a deep dislike of the authoritarian democracy that was the Russian government. The communist government in America saw him as a threat, but the former republican elites did everything in their power to protect him . A committed Republican and conservative, he deeply disliked the Putin regime, even though some would say Putin is a martyr for conservatives around the world. Norman became a champion of the Republican establishment when DC was occupied, and he was paraded around the city, giving speeches and statements to the nation. These mostly consisted of feel good messages, so not to attract the attention of Russia. When the was offered the role as lawyer for the United States for the coming Tribunal, he gladly accepted.

Norman now faces the near impossible task of defending the United States. He knows he may lose the case, but this only intensifies his commitment to total victory. He has his knowledge, charisma, and passion ready, and now he is determined to see the United States proven innocent and dealing a blow to Russia, Syria, and the other allied powers as a result. The question of whether Norman is up to the task is about to be answered.

Character Personality: (include their likes, dislikes, fears, skills, and anything else you think is important) Norman is an intelligent man, having graduated Harvard with a degree in law. He is knowledgeable in all sorts of legal affairs and specialises in political cases. He also has a charismatic demeanor and prefers being fact-based instead of flamboyant. However, he fears losing cases, and has an arrogant side that sometimes shows when under pressure or when he thinks he is on the verge of actually winning a case. He intensely dislikes losing, and will attempt to direct the blame onto someone or something else other than himself. He likes winning and feeling superior to others in and out of the courtroom. He can be fiercely combative when provoked, and has been known to resort to physical violence even in the judge's presence. He can be described as an ideological crusader or as an autocratic charmer. Overall, Norman is an elite lawyer, but his personality traits often get in the way of his courtly affairs and hurt his case.

Where is the horse gone? Where the warrior?
Where is the treasure-giver? Where are the seats at the feast?
Where are the revels in the hall?
Alas for the bright cup! Alas for the mailed warrior!
Alas for the splendour of the prince!
How that time has passed away, dark under the cover of night, as if it never were.

The United Holy German Reich wrote:Character App:

Kruger, I was wondering; do you want to prosecute the Americans under American, Russian or international law? Are we going to look at the Geneva and Hague Conventions? Or are we going for murder and unconstitutional actions?
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

The Russians are looking to try the UN, NATO, and the EU for war crimes and crimes against humanity for the sponsoring of terrorism, assassination, and unlawful removal of a head-of-state. For the US administration, there's going to be the same charges, but there's the addition of violating the Constitution more than once, including for domestic affairs.

They're all going to be tried under Russian law when the trials are in St. Petersburg, however Assad wants another trial in regards to the Syrian War in his own country, and I'm planning on having a vote for that in the IC.

Gaddafi was indeed a head of hate.

Anyways, I invited Arvenia, Gurori, Nova Capile, United Holy German Reich (who was probably invited by you anyways), and Free Asian Ports, IIRC.

Yeah, Arvenia isn't going to be accepted with his app. He's a good player, but we probably wouldn't get anywhere with his character (no offense to him). I meant to put up the nations needed section, but my Internet was turned off last night and I had to go to bed.

By the by, for these cases, you'd do best to invoke the Draft Articles on the Responsibility of States for Unlawful Acts (DARS), because those articles deal with the responsibility of States in the cases you mentioned.
