Do you like sports?

Postby Anonymous Proxy » Sun Nov 29, 2015 11:32 pm

I'm not much of a sports fan personally (it just doesn't interest me, I just like porn and star trek more lol), just curious how the NS community feels. Also feel free to discuss your favorite sports, teams, why you prefer a certain type of sport or college vs pro, etc. I'd also be curious to know if there are any popular teams in the NS community, but there are way too many to make a poll.

Mostly professional sports. Not much of a college sports fan.

I played soccer in my early childhood, and I was a professional wrestler.

I'm a fan of professional sports, mostly rugby but a bit of hockey as well.

I'm not much for professional sports, but I do develop an interest in soccer every time the World Cup rolls around; on the other hand I loathe the nationalistic fervour with which rugby is promoted and followed here, and I think that professional athletes are mostly boring people (as a nerd, I bear my peoples' traditional hatred of jocks).

On the other hand, I'm somewhat interested in the tactical nature of sports, and I do enjoy video games based on sports like Blood Bowl and Rocket League. I was involved in archery as a child, though that's a sport in the same way that golf is, ie not very.

So ultimately sports are fine in theory, but they're not my cup of tea, and I think rugby fans should be fired into the sun.

Yeah. Like playing them too. Baseball and football primarily, but hockey's cool too. Pretty much just professional, but I'll watch a college game if one's on.

The underdog, or anyone facing New Zealand.

I live in New Zealand, and - as originally stated - I hate my countrymens' hooting, tribalistic fetishisation of organised sport as a channel through which they express their aggression and loathing of the out-group and belief in the superiority of the in-group. I think they see sports as an excuse to revel in the most primitive aspects of human society. I also live near the university, so whenever there's a sporting event on (particularly rugby) the background noise is full of the cries and shouts of people getting trashed on alcohol, shutting down all higher cognition, and reverting to animals.

Also whenever there's a major rugby match coming up, bus stops and billboards sprout the sort of ultranationalistic jingoism that would be utterly unacceptable in a modern civilization if the uruk-hai pictured on the posters weren't contesting possession of a ball.

Never had any interest in the various sportsballs.

Spent many, many pints in the campus pub watching curling during the Vancouver Olympics though. A great combination of mind sport, strategy, and athleticism.

Meh. Sports can be fun, but I'm not all that interested for the most part.

College sports?

Oh right, America, it's a thing there.

Eh, I'm okay with pro sports. It's a nice diversion of life, and unlike fiction, it doesn't have (or ought not to have) a pre-destined outcome.

I'm a fan of professional sports, mainly association football (soccer), boxing, auto racing (especially Formula One), mixed martial arts (MMA), and tennis. I also like to watch a game of baseball or basketball from time to time.

Do I look human to you?

Seriously though, this poll is really, really bad. That dynamic exists for 300 million people. The other however many billion? Nah. I mean, maybe you could suggest that amateur sides versus professionals would be something to consider but that would assume that amateur sides actually generate much interest to really be able to follow... as opposed to be involved with... which simply isn't the case. And you can't exactly replicate the whole club versus country thing (although, a bit of bias here... I primarily prefer cricket and live in NZ: country gets all the attention in this respect) here either... in general, I prefer internationals.

Also, seriously, there is a sport for everyone. Sometimes this may involve esports, chess-type sports or motosport/equestrian (huh?).

Clearly you've never visited.

Nah, you'd probably need to be here longer than a visit to appreciate Tsar's point of view. Case in point: the most recent America's Cup. One, if you weren't paying attention before Team New Zealand was one race away from winning (and Oracle was something like six... they won) you shouldn't be excessively patriotic. Two, you were excessively patriotic. Three, NZ is probably the only country that considers itself to participate in the America's Cup... in general, the America's Cup is like Manchester City versus Chelsea.*

*As opposed to City versus Grafton. Hahaha. Sorry, inside joke. The inside being me.

Not a sports fan. It seems to me that all sports where there is big money, are full of corruption and cheating. People who pay inflated prices for ridiculous merchandise, ticket prices or pay per view fees, to watch chemically enhanced people take part in fixed events are suckers.

Only professional sports I watch are either baseball, 10km+ runnings or sometimes iron man competition. College sports I tend to watch baseball, soccer or actually anything since it's very fun to see.
