Background
In 1985, the Soviet Union gave a military base to Australia in Kyrgyzstan in order to bolster support for the Soviet War in Afghanistan. When the Union dissolved, one of the conditions for its independence was that Kyrgyzstan would allow the base for another fifty years. FOB Falcon has remained near Isfana, Kyrgyzstan ever since.

In 1992, civil war broke out in neighboring Tajikistan. It ended in 1997 but left the government severely weakened. During the Arab Spring, a coup d'état by General Tariq Yassef ousted the democratic President. President Emomalii Rahmon is still missing. Tariq's views are very traditional and conservative Islam. Tariq's government is however allied with the Tajikistan Communist Movement (TCM). While they have different views on religion, they have similar views on the economy and on civil rights. TCM is classified as a terror group by Australia and most of Central Asia. TCM used to cooperate with the Taliban before they fell. Tajikistan is the closest thing to a communist state in Central Asia.

When the US invaded Afghanistan in 2001, FOB Falcon was used as a staging base for Australian, UK, and US forces. This caused problems in the local population. Most people in the area disagree with the base. The TCM is a strong opponent of the base. The TCM would launch a few rockets at the base every once-in-a-while but nothing would be as bad as what happened tonight....

Today
Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan Border, 0200, July 8th, 2015
Four men dressed in black cross the border into Kyrgyzstan. They quickly flag down a passing car. Inside is a family of four. The four men shoot the father and mother in the front seat and pull out the two daughters.
"Please don't shoot me!" The younger sister, 15 years old, said.
"Take me, leave her." The eighteen-year-old sister said. "We are just civilians."
The leader of the men, Barak Yassef replied "tonight, there are no civilians." He then executed the two girls.

30 minutes later at FOB Falcon....

Sergeant Aaron Thomas was the head of the guard post that night. It was Thomas, Corporal Jones, Corporal Hanson, and Private Johnson in the gatehouse tonight.
"Vehicle approaching, 100 meters." Johnson said from the roof of the house.
"Ten four." Thomas replied. This was not his first deployment overseas. He knew that this was probably some drunk locals looking for a fight. Thomas signaled for the vehicle to stop about five yards from the guard station. "Halt!" Thomas said as Jones and Thomas walked up to the car.
"What business do you hav----" Jones didn't even finish his sentence before the bullet hit him, square in the face.
"Ambu---" Thomas said as a bullet hit his chest.
Hanson dove behind the building as a firefight erupted. A shotgun blast then killed Johnson, who was stuck ten feet up on the roof. Hanson returned fire with his M4 and downed an insurgent before getting hit in the leg. He dropped his carbine as he went down and tried to pull his pistol out. Unfortunately, he was to late as Barak shot him, point blank in the face.
"Let's move, they are supposed to check in every thirty minutes." Barak's men began to do their different roles.
"Sir, Ahmed is hit in the stomach and is hurt bad."
Barak grabbed Ahmed's hand and picked him up, "Ahmed, you must do this for the cause. Drive the car to the communications post and set it off." Barak asked his friend as Ahmed got into the driver's seat.
Barak and the two others ran off toward the officers' housing....

Thirty minutes later in the communications post....

"Sir, checkpoint echo hasn't reported in yet."
"That lazy bastard Thomas. Send a patrol. I'm sure he just fell asleep, again." Major Smith said. It was Smith's turn to command the night watch. He was ok with the night watch, nothing happened and he got to do his Crossword Puzzles. Just as he was about to get the eight letter word going down, a car plowed into the doors, tearing the hinges right out of the wall. As it slowed to a stop in front of Smith, Ahmed pressed the detonator and detonated the bomb, causing a massive fireball to engulf the building.

Thirty seconds later....

Barak and his men slowly crept up to the houses. There were four of them. They were small but did the job of housing the commanding officers and their families. As they came up to the first house, Barak motioned to the others to wait. Barak broke the back doors window and opened the door. He silently walked up the stairs. He put down his AK-47 and pulled out his silenced pistol. He then went to work....

On the other side of the base.....

"I need an emergency command post set up over there. I need triage set up over here." Captain Michaels of the 75th Infantry Battalion said to the men as the began treating the wounded at the comms center. "Also get me FOB Viper, I need the 129th Rescue Wing here now. I want the 44th Infantry Battalion to guard the Viper. The 52nd needs to come here and set up a perimeter. Send the 8th Squad of the 11th SOG to the housing. Have the 18th Armored Company help here." The various units from around the base began to move into their positions.

At Base Housing.....

Barak left the house and went outside to meet his men. "Ok, same thing with the next houses." As they ran up to the next house, a three vehicle convoy of SOG pulled up.
"Contact left! The Lieutenant yelled. The SOG soldiers quickly killed the first two. Barak then dropped a smoke grenade and got into a parked vehicle. He hot wired it and sped off the base toward Tajikistan. Instead of chasing Barak, the SOG cleared the homes. Only one home hit, Major Kelly's home. Five dead, Kelly and his family.

Over the base....

"This is Reaper one one, we have target." The 1st Ghost Tracking Team told Command as they followed Barak's vehicle with a Reaper drone. According to the unit, the vehicle ended up going to Dushanbe.....

"Hello and good morning. We interrupt your local news program for breaking news.
An Australian base in Kyrgyzstan has been attacked. We have reports of a bombing and attack at Forward Operating Base Falcon. From what we can understand, forty-one people have been killed and nineteen wounded. According to the Defense Ministry, two majors have been killed along with one of their families. The Defense Minister commented on the attack, saying that it was a horrible tragedy and that Australia will retaliate. He also said he could not comment on the investigation as it was ongoing but another source in the government says the main suspect is the Tajikistan Communist Movement."

Prime Minister John Churchill, Official Address to the nation and the world, Sydney, Australia, July 9th, 2015 0700
The Prime Minister wiped the sweat off his brow as he was announced for the press corps. He had to deliver sad news today. He thought about how many soldiers would die in the name of freedom in the next 24 hours.
"Here to speak to you is Prime Minister Churchill." The press corp stood up as he entered.
"Good morning. I come before you to try and explain this terrible and senseless attack on our nation. At 2:00 in the morning yesterday, a Kyrgyzstani family of four was executed. Four terrorists hijacked their car and drove into Forward Operating Base Falcon in Isfana , Kyrgyzstan. After ambushing a patrol of Australian Army members, part of the 75th Infantry Battalion, one of them drove a car bomb into the communications building. The rest then headed up to the officers quarters and entered the home of one Major Richard Kelly. Upon doing so, they killed the Major, his wife, their five-year-old daughter, their twelve-year-old son, and their sixteen-year-old daughter. Three of the four terrorists were killed and one escaped. Forty-one people died in the initial attack, two more also died from wounds suffered during the attack. The wounded toll has risen to 31 due to recent rescues of those trapped in the communications center. We have identified the dead terrorists to be of the Tajikistan Communist Movement. TCM has a history of attacks against our bases in the region. Evidence indicates that Mubarak Hussein, the leader of the TCM, personally planned this attack. Barak Yassef, brother of the General Tariq Yassef and second-in-command of TCM, personally led this attack. Both are still at large. Ladies and gentlemen, there is four Tajikistani checkpoints on that road. Barak drove back to the capital after the attack, we believe to meet with his brother. Tajikistan provides money, training, and support to the TCM. They also have a history of human rights abuses that could soon turn into one measurable only next to that of Gaddafi and Saddam."
He pauses.
"Let me say this: we will retaliate. Our reprisal will be great. To those who are responsible, we will find you and we will find those who aid you. There is nowhere that is safe for you. We will get you. At a national security meeting last night, a military operation was authorized, by me, to respond to this attack. Operation Defensive Shield began last night with the Australian Rapid Deployment Forces being deployed to Tajikistan. The invasion is led by General John Henry Thomas. These forces have begun to land via airborne insertion all over Tajikistan. Australian Special Operations Forces have also began to take up positions in the country. Air and missile strikes precipitated this invasion. The 2nd Mechanized Brigade has also been mobilized and is on their way. The objectives of this invasion are as followed:
1.) Find and eliminate the threat posed by the TCM
2.) Remove General Tariq Yassef from power and install a stable, democratic government
3.) Secure any and all Chemical, Biological, Radiological, or Nuclear weapons in Tajikistan.
4.) Find and eliminate the illegal narcotics trade that is flowing into other parts of Central Asia via Tajikistan
Tajikistan is the biggest threat to the stability of Central Asia as well as the Middle East that exists today. The "Crossroads of Asia" is not safe or secure. Operation Defensive Shield can accomplish these goals. We call on the nations of the world to join us in our liberation of Tajikistan. Tariq is an illegal dictator that rose to power in a coup and should we find the democratically-elected president, still alive, he will be appointed back to his position of power. A list of the forces operating in the country will be distributed. As always, Australian Special Operations Forces operating outside the ARDF will be excluded. We will also be publishing a list of the most wanted of these terrorists and dictators. Thank you and Godspeed." The Prime Minister walked off the stage as the press jumped up and began to shout questions.

Captain Thomas Jones, 1st Battalion, 23rd Airborne Brigade, Fort Keeling, July 9th, 2015, 0100
Jones walked into the briefing room as the presentation started. "Ok gentlemen. We have been ordered to invade Tajikistan in response to the terror attack at FOB Falcon. We have been ordered to drop into Dushanbe, the capital. Now, air strikes have already hit training camps in the east and military bases in the south of the country. We will be dropped in one mile north of the city. 1st Battalion, your job is to capture this building," Colonel Richard Beckum paused to pass out the pictures to the captains and major of 1st Battalion, "it is the capital building of the whole country. You will also capture this nearby hospital and an apartment building. The hospital will turn into a triage center for civilians. Captain Jones, 1st Company will handle security at the hospital after you capture it. The apartment building is the tallest in the city and will be used to call in air strikes, house snipers, and direct troop movements. 2nd Company will take and hold this building. 3rd through 5th Companies will take the capital building. Good luck gentlemen." The colonel walked out to go brief the other battalions.

Six hours later......

"Go! Go! Go!" The loadmasters said to the men of the 23rd as they jumped out of the huge Starlifter transport plane. Jones pulled his cord as he hit 5,000 feet. After he landed, he wrapped up his parachute and moved to the rendezvous point, a mile north of the city. He met up with his fireteam members: Private Dunby, Private Mallone, Private Kirby, and Specialist Kawasaki. They gathered around their Supacat ATMP and headed toward the city….

Australian forces have officially launched the Invasion of Tajikistan, codenamed Operation Defensive Shield. Australian forces landed via parachute and helicopter in the West, Central, North, and Southwest parts of the country. An Australian ground invasion was launched from FOB Falcon into northern Tajikistan. Australian air strikes have hit military and terrorists bases. Special Operations Forces have infiltrated the country.

OUT OVER THE OCEANS

Mercinda rubbed the sleep from her eyes as she woke up to the familiar vibration that she had felt for most of the day. It was the thrum of giant engines that drove this metal tube through the air, mounted on aluminum wings. She took a few more seconds to focus, then she looked around.

Matteo Ripaldi, ‘Matti’, was tapping away at his netbook/tablet, his eyes were squinting as he focused intently on the screen. He was their IT come researcher and producer for the team. He was also the most rational of people she had ever met.

In the seat next to her sat Otto, her cameraman. He was the opposite of Matti in most every way. Currently, he was popping his cheek with his finger to make a water drop sound, all the while his knees were bouncing up and down to an unheard rhythm. It was as nerve racking to watch him as it was for him to go through it, being penned up on the plane.

“Did ya take yer meds, Otto?”

“Shit! Of course I took my fuckin’ meds, hunz…”

She shot him a glare and he thought of a better approach,
“Yes, Merci. I took my meds. Why are we heading out this way again? Like...thousands of klicks the wrong way from the action - Australia. Remind me again, because I thought we were going ta cover all the boom boom up in Tajikistan.”

They were on Qantas 674, having had to make several connections on their journey, starting on a Millenium Airways jet out of Astyria what seemed like a week ago.

“Because, one, we have an appointment with the Press Secretary of the Prime Minister. Williams. Two, it’s a valuable part of the story, to cover the preparations and the home leadership. Look...I know it’s not the most glamorous of assignments, but this is what Ramilla set up for us and we’ll take it. This is the bill payer, Otto…”

Matti finished up typing whatever he was working on and broke in, supporting Mercinda.
“Otto, all you have to do is press some buttons and keep the lens focused. Don’t worry about who or why. Besides, this will give us a good time to get some bearing and the invasion just started in Tajikistan, we’d just be getting in the way there. If anything, we'd be stuck on the border in Kyrgyzstan, waiting for days until they let us in. We got a good jump over some of the other news crews.”

“Yeh, thanks, brainiac. Like I didn’t know that! Seriously, the amount of time it takes to fly out here, the invasion will be done and the story over by the time we get there…”

Mercinda laughed,
“Oh, I think it will last a bit longer than that.”

Otto was easing up and his knee was slowing.
“Ya gonna hit the PM with some hard hitters?”

“Ya know how I roll, Otto. I will get to the info one way or another. I have my job.”
Matti sighed, turning and giving a look to Mercinda.
“Merci, come on now, let’s not get kicked out and barred from Tajikistan before we even have a chance to get in the door.”

“Matti, I know my job. Don’t tell me how to do it. Okay? We got this. You just keep giving me all the info I need, accorzu?”

“Right. That’s the plan. So far, so good. They’re keeping a tight lid on ops, but it looks like the air strikes and commando raids are having an effect. I don’t think the Tajiks are going to be able to hold out for too long once the full press hits. Not sure when the regular troops will go in yet, but it might be a while yet.”

“Great. We still have a bit of time before we touch down in Sydney. I need a drink.”
She looked around for a flight attendant, while at the same time, digging for her wallet out of her purse.

“Keep it low key here, Mercinda. You need to be fresh for the interview.”

“I got it, Matti. Time for you to turn it off. Ramilla isn’t here, so I’m in charge. Right?”

“Right.”

Otto added unnecessarily,
“Yeh, clam it, Eggy. Just keep up with the clicka clacka, eh?”

“Otto, just...try to sleep, eh?”
Mercinda still needed that drink. It was too soon for Mother time here for the team. If her two ‘boys’ were sniping this early on, it would be a long assignment.

General Yassef, Dushanbe, Tajikistan, July 12th, 2015
"I don't care! We must stop the Australians! Colonel Nubuck, send all of the Internal Troops to Anzob Pass. Have the Border Troops set up ambushes along M-34. Have the Army battle for this city. Push them back out to the north and sandwich them between the Army and Internal Troops. Send the Mobile Forces to launch guerrilla warfare in the southwest. I believe it is the 35th Airborne Brigade that landed there. Try and open the route to Afghanistan. I want the mountain brigade to fight in the Alay Mountains. Order the air force—“ Yassef was cut off by the Colonel.
“Sir, the air force was destroyed last night in an air strike.”
“Damn it! Get me the TCM right now!”

Five minutes later….

“Mubarak. You must launch more attacks.” Yassef said.
“Don’t tell me what I must do! You stop the advance, we will handle the rest. The Australians have bitten off more than they can chew...”

Tajik forces began to move into position. The Internal Troops began the task of destroying bridges and setting mines. They also began fortifying their position in the Anzob Pass. Trenches were dug and machine guns set up. Anzob Pass is the main pass on the only cross-country motorway. The Mobile Forces and Army began to launch attacks on Australian Airborne Forces.

To: International Community
From: General Yassef

We have been the victims of Australian aggression. Mubarak Hussein is innocent. The TCM is just a political organization, not a terrorist group. Tajikistan is under siege by imperialists. The Australians have taken a page out of the British playbook. Our Armed Forces are launching a counteroffensive to drive back the invaders. They will not succeed. We will prevail. We ask the international community to help condemn and drive out these cowards.

Tal'eu held his head in the early hours of the morning as he rested his eyes in his throne, cringing at each step as the House of Advisers approached him. Eventually, the footsteps halted, and Tal'eu forced himself to open his eyes as most of the advisers bowed down to him. The king snarled as he looked up at them, but softened as he saw general Damiun had returned with the wine he had requested. He even removed the cork with his ceremonial saber, as he had always done when they were children. It was an old habit, but an old comfort. "The Australians are in Tajikistan." Tal'eu said at last, accepting the wine from his general, his face fading into mild inconvenience. "Our good comrade Churchill had some mighty words to say, and he's proven he's got the military might to back those up. They invoke the treaty, then, and we become an agent of their wrath."

The advisers remained silent. The generals among them looked eager, cocky almost that war was all but guaranteed. Even the Minister of Cartography appeared almost delighted, and Tal'eu hardly wondered why. And yet, none of them spoke. "Diomassiotoko, vo priduo, we have mulled this over on our own before appearing before you." Na In, the Minister of Spirituality, spoke up at last, approaching. "Our decision was unanimous."

"Rochor Horsh 1944." The king said, staring at the label on the bottle. "Finally starting on those Mascagni fellows, then. I hear their wine is to die for. I do hope that it is no lie." Most of the advisers exchanged glances between one another, confused. Their nation was on the brink of war, the first Sacheyenyani bullet fired out of a training range since 2014, and their king was focusing on his wine.

"Diomassiotoko?" Na spoke once more, his voice uncertain.

"You've invoked the treaty, yes? If your decision was unanimous, and you've invoked the treaty in that decision, then obviously you're going to tell me you lads are voting on war. But, of course, as we all know, we're not going to do it for free, out of the decency of our hearts, no. We're going to take some land and slaves for our troubles, and some wealth too, yes." Tal'eu spoke groggily as he filled his favorite glass, and then a second.

"And so you will be declaring war, diomassiotoko?" Na asked after another uncertain glance. The glare returned from the king was like a sadistic knife, and his smile was death. Na jumped when Damiun, the Commander in Chief, clapped excitedly.

"That's the green light, comrades, lets move, everybody get ready. Show time in Tajikistan by midnight tomorrow." Damiun barked to the other advisers, who waited for a dreary 'dismissed' before leaving the room to do their necessary functions in such an event. Damiun, however, approached the king, and hoisted the second glass. They toasted, each appreciating the taste.

"It's decided then. Damiun, go find Mako and telegram the Australians. Tell them we're jumping, ask them how high, how far, send them my blessings and a bloody fruit basket. Once you're done that, telegram Mascagni, and tell them I'd like to make them some very rich men. That new one, with the long name, preferably. Now if you'll excuse me..." The king sighed, throwing back the rest of the glass. "I'm going back to bed, dammit."

Hail, and blessings of the gods, good comrades of Australia.  Our prayers are with you for those you have lost in war, and surely Valhall awaits them.  However, war awaits us, among the living.  It is with his Imperial Majesty and Holiness' blessings that I write to you now, to state that I am raising my saber in your honor, and am willing to bring it down upon our mutual enemies.  I only ask where you would like our soldiers to begin their campaign, and how they may arrive there, and you may expect to see our friendly faces alongside yours on the battlefield.  May the gods ever bless thy path.

Press Secretary for the Prime Minister John Williams, Sydney, Australia, July 13th, 2015, 1900
Williams walked into his office just before the interview. He opened the file on his desk. It was brief about the current situation in Tajikistan.
Official DOD Press Briefing

Major gains in the north. Australian 5th Armored Brigade, 12th Infantry Division, 4th Mountain Brigade, and 2nd Stryker Brigade have slammed through Border Guard units in the North and are proceeding south. Artillery and air units are providing support. Airborne units, specifically the 23rd Airborne around Dushanbe and the 35th Airborne in the Khatlon Province, have faced fierce resistance from Army and special forces units. Special Operations are operating in the country. Tajik border crossings have been taken. That information is however classified.85th Civil Support Battalion has yet to find any CBRN weapons or facilities.

Australia’s Most Wanted in Tajikistan
1. Mubarak Hussein - Leader of the TCM
2. Tariq Yassef - Leader of the Tajik regime
3. Barak Yassef - Second-in-command of TCM
4. Gulmurod Khalimov - Islamic Terrorist linked to ISIS, possibly in Tajikistan
5. Haji Ehai Ibrahim - Leader of the Ali Baba Cartel
6. Colonel Rahmon Nubuck - Second-in-command of the Tajik military, leader of the Mobile Forces
7. Ahmed Roshan - TCM Chemical Expert
8. Muhammed Parsa - TCM Biological Expert
9. Captain Benham Rasheed - Presidential Guard commander
10. Sergeant Rasar Yassef - only son of Tariq Yassef

Williams then left his office and headed for the interview.

Corporal Ger Vincent, 3rd Marine Recon Operations Company (MROC), Vakhsh River, Khatlon Province, Tajikistan, July 13th, 2015, 0300
“Croc one-two, this is Croc two-three. Two mike to drop zone. I repeat, two mikes to drop zone. Over and out.” The two Chinook helicopters flew above the trees until they finally reached the drop point. The two Ch-47s lowered down so they were closer to the water. Simultaneously, two Special Operations Craft - Riverine (SOCR) fell to the river beneath. Twenty-six men fast-roped onto the SOCRs, taking up their positions in the boats. Vincent stood with five other MROC Marines and seven NSOC Craftsmen as they glided down the river. He scanned the shore with his thermal goggles. All he saw was a few deer and possibly a goat.
As he studied the shore, Sergeant Moreno said through the head set, “Target sighted. Half a kilo out. Coordinates 37* 11’ 40.56” North, 68* 36’ 19.08” East.” The unit saw the Tajikistan-Afghanistan Bridge. The giant structure loomed in front of them as they drove up.
Captain O’Connor, the unit’s leader, whispered “Three two one! Go!” A ladder from each boat was thrust on the side of the support beams. “Hold her steady lads. That’s it. Demo teams, go.” Three MROC Marines from each boat climbed up the ladder and began to set charges.

Five minutes later….

“Let’s roll!” O’Connor said as the NSOC and MROC Contingent moved onto their next target…..

Captain John Overton, 11th Special Operations Group, Task Force Mako, outskirts of Dushanbe, Tajikistan, July 13th 2300
“All Mako units, this is Mako actual. Call out.”
“Mako 1 ready.”
“Mako 2 good.”
“Mako 3 ready.”
“Reaper 2-3, do you have confirmation on target?” Mako actual said.
“Negative. Thermal shows six figures but we aren’t sure if it is Barack Yassef.”
“Damn it. Ok, move on my mark. Three, two, one. Go!” Mako Fireteam 1 kicked in the front door and tossed in a flash bang. Simultaneously, Mako Fireteam 2 did the same at the back door. Overton took point as they entered the house. He quickly put three rounds into the chest of the first man to raise his gun. He then kicked the next man square in the chest, sending him flying against the wall. “On the ground now!” The Task Force Mako members yelled as the remains three dropped to the ground. TF Mako quickly rounded up the four survivors (Mako 2 also killed one) and quickly left the building.

Thank you for your commitment to our mutual defense and counterterrorism. It is in times like these that you truly know who are your friends. Now, to military matters. The Khatlon Province, where the 35th Airborne landed, is a crucial border region with Afghanistan. Special Operations and Airborne forces are trying to enforce the border but still have other objectives. This region is a drug hotspot and could be used to smuggle illegal narcotics and weapons in and out. We request that you deploy your forces there. Dozens of C-130s have been sent to Fort Dundee in South Sacheyenya. You will be allowed to board at 0700 and will be para dropped into Tajikistan. Godspeed.

PARLIAMENT BUILDING, SYDNEY,
ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REPUBLIC

Finally, the NETV 4 News crew touched down in Sydney, the capital of the Royal Australian Republic, and were escorted to the Parliament building by some minor government officials, where they were checked through by heightened security and escorted in to a side room off the Press Room where they would meet the Press Secretary. Matti helped Otto set up his equipment while Mercinda took a few minutes to primp in the nearest bathroom. She was not looking her best after a long flight, and would have liked to check in to the hotel first and shower, but it had to do for now. She got herself up to an acceptable level of glam that she could live with and pulled out her notes and questions she had written up on the plane. She was old fashioned, where most journalists were using tablets or some kind of smart device these days, she stuck to good old paper and pen to do most of her prep work. Not that she was averse to computers, but when it came to easy reference on the spot, she would rather be able to rely on herself and her shorthand, then a computer.
“Otto, you better not focus that lens on me. I will kick yer ass, ya hear me?”

“Relax, Merci, I know my job. Let’s just zip through this, eh?”

When the Press Secretary entered, introductions were made and Mercinda Deneux and Secretary Williams sat down. Otto flipped some filters on the camera, then gave a thumbs up.
Mercinda smiled, then quickly replaced the expression with one that showed more empathy and concern.
“Press Secretary Williams, thank you for granting us this interview at such a difficult time. We were so sorry to hear about the attack on your military’s base in Kyrgyzstan by the terrorists. Our hearts go out to everyone killed or wounded in the attack, and their struggling, grieving families. Has there been a memorial or dedication to the soldiers and civilians that were killed?”

Williams replied: "Absolutely. In wars like this, transparency is key and the press are a crucial part of that. We have no 'set' plans yet, but we are planning to do something."

"I see, well we would like to be there to honor them when the event is planned, if allowed. Will you be evacuating Australian civilian nationals out of the region to avoid risk of further terrorist attacks?”

"Very few Australian civilians are actually in Central Asia. Australian nationals are being rounded up as we speak. So far, we have 26 of the 42 nationals returned to Australian soil. We do have two military bases there right now and there has been a significant increase in security there. The same thing goes for Australian forces world-wide, as a precaution of course." Williams said.

“Of course. Reasonable precautions. Secretary, your government’s forces are in full mobilization and moving into Tajikistan as we speak. There seem to have been obvious links between the Tajik government and the TCM, who claim responsibility for the attack on your base. The reaction of your government seemed rather sudden, once that evidence presented itself. Was there any effort to approach the Tajik government to give up the terrorists or to punish them internally before the decision was made to invade their sovereign territory? In other words, if they had offered to work with your government in rooting out the TCM, would that have halted the immediate entry of Australian forces into Tajikistan?”

"The Australian government strongly condemns terrorism, wherever it appears. With that said, the TCM didn't act alone. It was directly supported by the government in Tajikistan. On top of that, the government is run by a dictator who took power through a military coup. No matter how much "help" they might have provided against the TCM, it was not enough. We don't want just one wolf, we want the whole pack."

Mercinda smiled at the clever analogy, then charged on ahead, her face serious again.
“Some say this might have been an overreaction to the attack on an overseas Australian base and that some steps were skipped in process. That retribution may have been too swift and broad, before the International community was consulted or advised. That it might have been better to form an International coalition to support such a move, before acting unilaterally. What does the Prime Minister say to that?”
"Australia, while part of several international organizations, has a right to defend itself. We are not conquering, we are fixing. Retaliation must be swift. When someone does something horrible and/or wrong, the punishment must be fast in order to show what happens when they act that way. A few missiles don't solve the problem." Williams, slightly riled, answered. "Next question."

“There seems to be some International support for Tajikistan, as well as for your government. How will the Royal Australian Government contain this conflict from becoming a broader International conflict with battlefields and air engagements outside of the current Area of Operations?”

After a moment of thought, Williams said, "we intend to fight in Tajikistan and only Tajikistan. We will not attack outside of the country. However, if attacked we will protect ourselves. We have already taken measures to prevent possible spillover with certain countries. Air patrols monitor the Tajik-Kyrgyzstan Border. Special Operations Forces and Airborne units have seized or destroyed key bridges on the border with Afghanistan. Several ASOC units patrol the rivers that make up that border. We are taking several precautions to ensure that the Tajik military and insurgents stay in-country."

“Should the invasion be successful, and there seems to be every indication that it will eventually succeed, how long will you remain in Tajikistan to occupy, subdue and stabilize it?”

"We will stay long enough to ensure the objectives are completed. The most important being the establishment of a stable, democratic government. Ideally, this government will prevent drug trafficking and terrorism along with improving human rights. The previous government had started some of these measures before the coup."

“What actual evidence is there of weapons of mass destruction that were mentioned in the Prime Minister’s speech? What would happen were the Tajik’s to go ahead and try to use such weapons on your troops, or civilians, in reaction to the invasion?”

"Well Mercinda, we have reason to believe that the TCM may have a limited capacity to produce chemical and biological weapons. During the civil war in the 1990s, members at the Tajik Anti-Plague station were working with dangerous pathogens. We believe that while they destroyed most of these pathogens, a few were smuggled out before destruction. As for chemical weapons, Tajikistan has an ability to toxic chemical substances for industrial purposes. We believe that it could be transferred over to military purposes.
As for your second question, we want to seize them before they can be deployed and that is what our military is trying to do. We have taken precautions with our units specifically for CBRN warfare."

“Do you have contingencies in place for battling a possible Tajik insurgency to your occupation?

"We have already planned for that. We believe that should the military of Tajikistan fall, an insurgency would be launched by the members loyal to General Tariq Yassef and the TCM. However, the TCM is a smaller organization and we believe that through special forces, air strikes, and good public relations, we can stop the insurgency. We hope that by reinstating the legitimate government, we can prevent the military crossover to the TCM." Williams said confidently.

“Will these efforts be tied in to the drug trafficking interdiction? What about the drug traffickers International links? How will those be handled?”

Williams, after taking a sip of water, replied “Central Asia is the Silk Road for illegal narcotics. Large amounts of Heroin flow out of this region. We intend to strike at these cartels and the terrorist groups allied with them. Once the government falls, we will send in Law Enforcement drug task forces to facilitate this strike."

"That is hoping that a lot of the right pieces fall into place. I would like to go back and follow up on earlier...You said that your government needed to act swiftly and unilaterally to retaliate...Also speaking about acting quickly to interdict and halt usage of weapons of mass destruction, as well as the destructive drug trade. Your government seems incredibly well informed about internal conditions in Tajikistan within a short amount of time.” She continued on, ignoring the wave off and dirty looks from Matteo in the background. ”...Would it be reasonable to assume that The Royal Australian Republic has been monitoring Tajikistan for some time, with assets, like intelligence agents, in place, waiting for the right time to strike? Possibly long before the current casus belli?"

“Of course I can’t confirm or deny anything pertaining to intelligence or special operations. However, I’ll admit that we do fight terrorism across the globe. No terrorist is safe, no matter what country they’re in.”

“How will you deal with foreign troops or volunteer fighters aiding the TCM and Tajik government?”

“Peacekeeping troops in Tajikistan will not be attacked. However, we will defend ourselves if we come under attack. Foreign troops fighting against us will be dealt with just like regular combatants."

“Should your government look towards pulling all the troops out of Tajikistan...What structure will a new, friendlier Tajik government have, should your government eventually help to set one up? It was mentioned by Prime Minister Churchill, and yourself, that you would try to return the previous democratically elected President to power. If he is no longer alive, and none of the previous Tajik regime remain, what then? How do you look to rebuild the Tajik government structure? Will it be modeled on the Royal Australian government? Will it be a coalition government of all possible parties and ethnic representatives?”

“Ideally, we will reinstate the former President. We actually have teams looking for him as we speak. If he is not alive, we will organize elections for a new President. The Congress will, of course, be reinstated and ideally we can salvage the former government's remains."

“Again, that seems to be extremely hopeful that all those officials haven't been purged. Do you think this military intervention might encourage sympathetic terrorist attacks at home, on Royal Australian soil?”

“We are always prepared for terrorism. We have faced attacks before and this will be no different. Counter-terror teams are working here and abroad to keep us safe, just like they always have."

“I understand. Well, thank you for answering our questions, Secretary. It has been an honor and a pleasure to meet you and speak with you. Thank you for your hospitality.”

“You as well, Mercinda. Do you intend to go to Tajikistan?"

"Yes, we do. Hopefully with cooperation from your government, but regardless, we will try to get in as close to the action as possible."

“Would you like me to see if I can get you embedded with a unit?" Responded the Press Secretary.

Mercinda smiled,
"We appreciate your offer, but I think we would like to have free reign to go where we please to cover the whole conflict in a very non-biased manner. We may have to go in areas where your troops don't have control in order to do that." Left unsaid was the fact that this would obviously involve interacting with the TCM and current Tajik government.
"While in Australian areas of control, we most certainly will want the cooperation of your military and civilian personnel."

"That's ok. Goodbye and be safe." Williams dismissed them. He then stood up, unclipping his microphone and returned back to his office.

Otto lowered his camera and Matti walked up from the corner of the room.
“I told you not to push it, Merci.”

“And I told you that you’re not in charge. You’re overstepping boundaries, Matti.”

“Ramilla told me…”

“Ramilla should have told you that the Lead Correspondent is the team leader in the absence of an onsite producer.”

“Yes, but I’m handling production duties here.”

“You are not...Look...Let’s shelve this argument for right now and get out of here. We still have a lot to do before we hop back on a plane.”

“Agreed.”

“Yeah, I’m starvin’.” Otto cut in.

Mercinda shook her head,
“We need to get some street interviews first, Otto.”

“Schiesse!”

Thanks to Royal Australian for the cooperative RP and quick responses.

Fort Dundee, Meshkal, Sacheyenya
0640

It had rained only enough to wet the ground, a sparce puddle here and there. It was what the Sacheyenyani referred to as the 'oh look it rained-y' season. "I love the smell of the fresh rain so early in the morning. It is a good sign, you know." General Damiun stood over the side of the jeep as it entered the fort, saluting the guards as they passed. Aside from the driver, only one other man was in the vehicle with him. General Crisle Ameni was 41 years old, and calling general Voyer, who had just turned 25, his superior, irked him. It was, however, a fact that most of the soldiers also needed to get used to. Voyer was a veteran of every Sacheyenyani war since the Sarko Dynasty began, and, at that, was a close friend to the old king Sarko and, consequentl, his son, the current emperor.

"Is it now? I had always thought that rain before a war was the gods weeping for what was to become of the soldiers they had cared for." Ameni looked up at the young warrior, and wondered how long it would take to take this man's job. The Commander-in-Chief, whether killed in combat or not, was guaranteed a seat in Valhalla, and this was an honor that every soldier strove for.

"Oh, they weep, but not for us comrade." The jeep pulled around the barracks to the airfield, and Voyer sat back down as 4,000 soldiers standing in rank came into view. It was an impressive sight, and made him smile brightly, as though he had been told he'd won a prize. "It is for our enemy, and what is to become of them." He hopped out of the jeep, along with Ameni, and looked out over the crowd.

"Happy day, comrades, 'cause you're in luck! This, unlike the last 20 some odd times we've called you out here, is not a drill. And at that, you lads got out here in record time. I'm proud of you." His voice echoed over a loudspeaker attached to a microphone in his coat. "Your reward? You're all being deployed to the Khatlon province in Tajikistan, to bring honor to the Prince, newly Thaned and blessed is he, to the king, to country, to gods, to Australia, and to your own family names. Quite a lot of honor, innit, comrades?" A war cry, hard and sharp, returned to him. "The government of Tajikistan is guilty, and the Tajikistan Communist Movement is guilty as well, of treason and aggression against an ally of the empire, and, consequently, treason against the empire itself. They are guilty of oppression against the people, and of illegally trading narcotics. As Commander in Chief, blessed by His Imperial Majesty and Holiness, I hereby declare war against the government of Tajikistan, and the TCM itself." He halted from inspecting the troupe to draw his saber, hoisting it high in the air with a battle cry, which was joined in by the soldiers who had gathered.

The echo died out, and Damiun finished a brief inspection. "This is general Crisle Ameni. From this moment on, he will be your commanding officer throughout the Sacheyenyani-Tajikistani War, as I hereby Christen it. I'll see you lads when you get back, or in Valhalla. Whichever comes first. May the gods ever bless thy paths." Damiun turned after saluting, patted Ameni's shoulder, and reentered the jeep, which drove away casually. Replacing him were four APCs, rounding the corner at about the same time.

"You all heard the man; now here the specifics." Ameni began. "Not all of you will be going at once. Alpha 1-5, about 500 of you, along with our friends here in the armor, will be deployed first to the Khatlon province of Tajikistan. Once there, our missions have already been outlined by Prime Minister Churchill. We are to cripple the drug trade, which is prominent in Khatlon. We are to confiscate any and all weapons of a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear nature in the area. We are to cripple TCM forces in the area, and remove the grips placed on the province by that devil, Tariq Yassef. You all know the rules, and now you all know the game plan as well. At ease for now. Alpha 1-5, get ready to jump, for our ride is almost here."

Khatlon Province
1530, that same day.

"Alright comrades, this is our stop. Get ready to jump, because as soon as we get green lit, we're dumping overboard. Our armor's going to deploy a little ways ahead of us, but we'll be able to regroup in no time." Ameni spoke through the intercom, alerting the troops to their destination. He was the first to jump when the ramps went down, and the first to touch down in Khatlon Valley. It was a clean drop and a clean regroup. They rushed to establish a makeshift base camp, and to await further instructions from either Ameni or the Australians themselves.

We would implore all parties to show restraint in these troubling times. An act of terrorism is a grevious one, but the measures taken to combat it must be born of justice and with cool minds, not of revenge and retribution masquerading as justice. We beseech the Australian Republic to temper their reactions with concern for those who will be affected by the potential for displacement and casualties.

We offer an International Conciliation Service, available for all nations to use in these situations. We offer this facility freely, with trained negotiators who are sensitive to regional concerns, and fluent in your languages. We hold no special interests short of the furtherment of peace, and protection of those who cannot protect themselves. We invite all parties to sit and discuss, to work together to achieve a common ends which does not result in the subjugation of a peoples or the casualties that such a war will inevitably bring.

To these ends, we offer the use of the 8 Luchtmobiele Brigade, a rapid-reaction force trained for peacekeeping duties. Their duties will be limited to ensuring the integrity of the border, and providing aid and assistance where it is needed, alongside the 105 Ziekenhuis Bataljon, who will provide comprehensive healthcare services where and when they can to those of all sides and none.

Tellingen Luchtmacht Base, Gereland

The air was stifling that morning over Tellingen, a "balmy" 36 degrees by only 11am, and barely a cloud in the sky. It was a day for shade, for paperwork in air-conditioned offices, and for casual training flights in the many gliders of the local school.

Brigade-Generaal Cees van Troest was relaxing. His mid-morning break was calling, and a cup of tea waited on his desk. He was tempted to pull out the small bottle of Victory gin from his drawer, but decided against it. It was too early in the day. The fate of the gin was decided by the shrill hailing of his telephone - a complex affair with it's LCD touch screen. The number called indicated central command. Van Troest hoped it was a test.

"Ja, Generaal. We will prepare for assignment."

A speaker across the barracks blares into life, the crackly tones echoing across the otherwise peaceful air base, breaking the peaceful slumber of the military institution.

"Commanders of 11 Luchtmobiele Brigade, report to the briefing room. Repeat, commanders of 11 Luchtmobiele Brigade to the briefing room."

An hour later, officers of the 11th Airmobile Brigade of the Gereland Army were making their way to barracksrooms across the base, instructing their units to prepare for deployment within the next few days. Like a swarm of ants spreading across the base, activity began to consume them. Whilst logistics and equipment teams began checks on the materiel ready to be sent abroad, the quartermaster's department were busy grumbling at the supplies soon to be whisked away to another corner of the world, and transport squadrons began planning routes. Diplomats began petitioning clearances to Tajikstan, ensuring the quickest routes for the shortest dispatch time.

All that remained was to persuade all those involved to the table before it was too late.
Welcome to Gereland

Xinjiang-Tajikistan border
Federation of Eminral Republic

"Why do we have to do this again?"a soldier complains while he observes the movement of Tajikistan's forces by the border. "Well, we could attack right now and get over this but.."

"But?" a female companion of his walks by. She grabs the binoculars from him and started to observe the border as well. "It's hot. Hotter than what it is back home." he said, while drinking his water. "Hm?" he looks down as the trucks started to make noise. "We're really going in?" he added. "Idiot, why else are we deployed in a distant land?" his comrade smacks his head. "Ow! You don't have to hit me like that." he complains.

At one of the entry point, the Eminrallian war flag has been raised, gaining the attention of the Tajikistan soldiers. "Are we really going?" one of the Eminrallian border patrol guards asks, "Or is it just one of those political posturing again?" His superior responds, while reading the newspaper. "They're probably not gonna see much of an action. They'll wait for the Australians to move in first. That's the Eminrallian way after all."

As they were talking, a helicopter belonging to the Eminrallian Army lands on the border outpost. A man, who turns out to be the Acting President, emerges from the chopper. The soldiers stopped all of their activities to give him a salute. The Acting President hurries inside the building to give a brief press conference:

"The Federation of Eminral Republic will give all necessary aid and support to our allies in the midst of an increasingly volatile situation in Tajikistan. It is in the national interest to stop possible defections of extremists from Tajikistan to our Federation. Due to the proximity of Tajikistan, the National Security Commission has expressed its fears over the possible influx of refugees to the Xinjiang State in case a military action breaks out. The NSC has stated that this may be used by extremists as a way to penetrate the Federation.

In order to alleviate such fears, we are closing down our border with Tajikistan indefinitely. Refugees that are fleeing to the Federation will have to comply with the instructions of Eminrallian authorities. Failure to comply with the special procedures by the authorities may result into detention and/or deportation.

Sacheyenyani and Australian forces, should they feel the necessity to use our facilities, will be granted the permission to do so. Many of you have expressed reservations about Eminral getting dragged into an unnecessary conflict. Rest assured, this decision has been taken with thorough consultation and scrutiny by the members of the Interim National Assembly and the NSC. This operation will be limited to peacekeeping only as well as providing necessary support to our allies.

Should any change in this mission arise, you can be assured that the military government shall immediately inform the general public. We ask every single Eminrallians to pray for the safety of Eminral and allied troops and the success of this mission. Thank you and have a good day."

1st Electorate Brigade, 3rd Regiment of Militia, Col. Stanislav Größel
Around 3 Miles away from FOB Falcon

The huge convoy finally stopped moving after 4 hours, in the distance, the smouldering wreck which used to be Field Operation Base Falcon could be seen. Colonel Größel stepped out of his SUV and fired blindly at the sand. Detonating the IED. The men around him jumped and one accidentally discharged his G36.

The Colonel walked out, away from the convoy, needing some fresh air. He holstered his Beretta M9 and slowly kept walking.

He stopped... about 10 metres away from a large sand dune, he stared at it, somewhat intrigued. It was almost too late when he noticed the barrel.
"AMBUSH!!!" He shouted to his battlegroup as the hiding insurgents commenced firing. He quickly drew his M9 and felled one of them before he could throw a Molotov. Battlegroup A moved up into cover as the IFV's opened fire. Stanislav felt somewhat proud that he had saved the lives of so many of his men and as he fired madly at the waiting insurgents, like he was in his own action movie, he saw the RPG. . . And then he saw nothing.
New Edom wrote:Unwerth laughed. “Such hen lobsters are the Vionnans. But then, every Vionnan is half a sodomite."

Captain Mike Sawyer, 5th Armored Brigade, entering Anzob Pass, Tajikistan, July 16th, 2015 1200
“Captain, I thought there was a Tajik army?” Corporal Meyers asked Sawyer.
“There is. Airborne units in the southern half have faced heavy resistance. The 23rd Airborne is under attack from armored units and the 4th and 17th from special forces.”
“Then tell me this, how come we haven’t been—“
An explosion hit the tank as the Australian advance came under heavy attack from the Internal Troops. The Armored Spearhead was halted. Sawyer looked through the scope for the main gun.
“Target, 250 meters, armored truck.” The Merkava IV sprang to life as the crew zeroed in on the truck. “Fire!” The tank shook as the gun fired, destroying the truck. He watched as a M3A4 flew past them in an attempt to scout the road ahead. As the Bradley moved, it hit a small bump—then exploded in a ball of flames. “Minefield!” The Meyers slammed on the breaks as they realized the horrible position they were in.
Sawyer yelled, “get the Bradleys up here and launch the M58s!” The remaining M3A4 Bradleys gathered to the front and launched their Mine Clearing Line Charges.

General John Henry Thomas, Operation Defensive Shield, FOB Falcon, Kyrgyzstan, July 16th, 2015 1400
“Colonel Davis, what is the situation?”
“Sir, the Main Advance has stalled in Anzob Pass. The forces were ambushed entering the pass. Slow advance but taking some casualties. They still have to go through the tunnel. Most likely filled with traps. The 3rd Airborne has taken light resistance. The other Airborne units, specifically the 23rd Airborne, are heavily involved. Special Forces units have sabotaged several key bridges and facilities. We have yet to capture any of the Top Ten.”

Specialist John Kawasaki, 1st Battalion, 23rd Airborne, North Dushanbe, Tajikistan, July 17th, 2015 0100
Kawasaki was born to an Australian mother and Japanese father. He lived in Australia for all of his life and loved his nation. He joined the Airborne to serve his country. Even the two month long Airborne course he took could not prepare him for what he was experiencing right now.

“Contact left!” Kawasaki yelled to his remaining teammates: Mallone and Kirby. The Captain and Dunby were killed the first day. They had been fighting on and off for the past five days. The First Battalion has lost fifty-percent of forces to injury or death. A few had been captured. The 23rd had lost nearly thirty percent of the brigade. Nearly the entire Tajik regular army was fighting them. The 5th and 6th Battalions, both scout units equipped with Wiesel 3s, had leveled the playing field with the enemy armor. The FV101 Scorpions had helped with the enemy APCs but had been almost wiped out by artillery fire. The Command and Logistics battalions had fallen apart and the artillery battalion lost most of their equipment in the jump. The infantry battalions had banded together and fought fiercely throughout the city. However, they were driven back.
Kawasaki led the men to a bombed out house. The remaining men of first squad, all eight of them, had gathered at the house. “Men, we have been ordered to retreat farther north. Heavy resistance is expected from the Tajiks. We will do our duty. We need to get ten clicks north by daylight. Let’s move!”

Captain John Gage, 4th Company of the 3rd Ranger Battalion, Nurek Dam, Tajikistan, July 16th, 2015, 2100
“Three, two, one. Hit it!” 20 Thales Hawkei SOVs sprang from the side of the road and drove towards the dam. the first ten set up on the south side and the second ten set up on the north side. The rangers began to dig in on both sides, preparing for daylight.

General Tariq Yassef, Dushanbe, Tajikistan, July 17th 0700
“Sir, we must leave now!” Colonel Nubuck said.
“We are fine. We have decimated their famed 23rd Airborne Brigade. The main advance is slowing down and we have basically paralyzed their 17th Airborne. We can do this!”
“Sir, their min advance will break through within the next twenty four hours. The 23rd has wiped out our armored and motorized units. The mountain brigade has yet to even engage the 17th. The Australians and Sacheyenyans are gaining complete control of the Khatlon Province. The Australians have cut off the Afghan border and the Eminrallians have cut off the border with China. We have one escape route that will close when the Australians get here. We must go to Uzbekistan now!” Nubuck said.

Nadir Yaka, International airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, July 17th
“Here is your ticket Mister Yaka. Enjoy your flight.” Yaka boarded the giant aircraft. The first aircraft he had every been on was large but cozy. He looked at the destination on his ticket again: Sydney, Australia….

To: Gereland
We are willing to negotiate. We want this Australian aggression to stop for the sake of innocent lives. The TCM did not commit these acts. Our only goal is to protect our people and our republic. We would also like Eminral and Sacheyenya to negotiate their immediate withdraw as well. Please help us find an end to this crisis.

Bokhtar District, Khatlon Province, Tajikistan
0900 Hours

They had spent a few days in the valley, setting up and preparing for a march. And now, as the company of 500 soldiers, lead by General ameni, actually went on march, accompanied by 4 APCs riding just ahead of the walkers, Ameni was starting to think this would be a cake walk. They had passed through three villages so far and met no resistance. The fourth one, as they approached it, seemed almost as though it would be no different. The Bokhtar District, if Ameni hadn't known better, would have almost seemed deserted to them.
Meanwhile, back at the base camp, four APCs and about 20 soldiers idled about, holding down the fort. They hung close to the APCs, sometimes on them, but never in them, save one or two soldiers at a time. More opportunity to move around and fight that way, should trouble arise. The location of the camp allowed them to see for a good distance. Their job was to wait here, until Beta 1-5 arrived in the next few days with the next batch of soldiers to join the march.
"If there are any members of the TCM or Tajikistani governmental forces, you are encouraged to surrender now." Ameni announced over bull horn as they rolled into the village. "The rules of Sacheyenyani warfare are such.

1. If you surrender forthright, you will be held a temporary POW, but will be released.
2. If you are unarmed, you will not be shot.
3. If we have reason to believe you can and will harm us, you will become the focus of our fire.
4. Retreating enemy forces will be shot. Surrendering enemy forces will be taken as POW indefinitely. They will be tried for treason against the empire, Punishments for this crime include slavery and death, though you may be released as per rule 1.
5. You may surrender at any time. We, by law, may not. We will fight until the last man, and you should keep this in mind.
6. We will do anything within our power to ensure our victory and survival, and are not bound by any rules of war save those that I have spoken. We are bound by no WA laws.

I repeat. All members of the TCM and Tajikistani forces are to be surrendered now." Ameni waited. Depending on the response, he would begin to speak again. He hoped he'd find something. Anything.

17JULY 0400 TAJIKISTAN BORDER

The marine reaction force had been sitting on the border for the past week waiting for orders and objectives. The marines arrived a couple days after the attack on FOB Falcon and was in a defensive posture on the border. Since the Australians launched their invasion everyone knew it would only be a matter of time before orders came down to join the invasion.

The officer in charge of the marine reaction force is General Martin Kong, a 30 year veteran of the marine corps and a more then capable commander. His entire career has been spent in the infantry so he had more then just a basic understanding of the situation.

General Kong waited in the communications center when message traffic was received from central command.

To: General Kong
From: High Command

General the attacks that happened to FOB Falcon cannot be allowed to go unpunished and if left unchecked this threat will grow. We must act now to stop any further acts of terrorism from occurring and to avenge the lose of innocent lives. You have been cleared to join Australian forces in their invasion. You will determine the rules of engagement. No air support has been directed your way as of yet, you must use coalition forces for support.

General Kong looked at the message in it's entirety and looked to his XO.

" assemble the men, we move in 30 mins."

0430 TAJIKISTAN BORDER

The marine reaction force had assembled and began their advance over the border.

MESSAGE TRAFFIC

TO: Prime Minister Churchill
From: Emperor Titus

Dear Sir,
The attack that you and your nation has suffered has been a great tragedy. Today 0400 marines from Nasiran expedition unit 1 crossed the border to join with your forces. Currently we have limited resources in the area. I have an emergency bill that we grant additional man power in the area increasing our numbers from 1,200 to 8,000 and deploying 2 aircraft carriers. Seeing how you are the leader of the coalition I am asking for my request to be granted so that we may better assist and win this war to stop acts like the one that occurred in the future.

SYDNEY, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REPUBLIC

The NETV crew left the Parliament Building, with some literature and contact info in hand courtesy of Press Secretary Williams and some of his aides. Overall, despite some close to home hitting questions from Mercinda, the Australian government was still very receptive and cooperative with them. She had every intention of using that to full advantage when they arrived in Tajikistan.

They made a quick stop at a Sydney road side vendor. Otto got a questionable carton of ‘fresh’ seafood, while the others got sausage rolls. They continued on, recording impromptu street interviews. The overwhelming majority of people they talked to were supportive of the punitive invasion of Tajkistan. None that they talked to, even if they were against full invasion, thought that the TCM didn’t deserve some form of retribution, even if only air raids.

It was all a moot point as the Australians had already committed several units of ground troops to a full invasion. The Tajiks were on the run and several other nations were committing troops to the invasion in support of the Australians, or had vowed the neutrality of peacekeeping forces. As of yet, there were no nations openly supporting the Tajikistan government or TCM that had their troops in the area of operations and fighting off the invasion. As the situation became increasingly untenable for the Tajiks, that seemed less and less likely to happen.

They got back to the hotel and Otto looked positively green.

“I think I gotta use tha cozzfickin’ bathroom…”

“Or...you could just use the regular bathroom.”

“Merd! Shut up, geek. I gotta go...bad. Not gonna make it to the room.”

Mercinda gave it a wave,
“Go, for Tell’s sake. Was that you doing all that farting? Don’t stink up the lobby bathroom, please. We still have to stay tonight.”

“Gaaah!...Take my camera.” Mercinda made no move to help him, so he turned to Matti. Finally just shoving it into the tech’s hands. Otto started to run to the elevators, then at the last minute, sure enough, he diverted down the hallway that led to the hotel’s lobby restrooms.

“Bastard! I told him, not...Oh well. Imagine if it was me...The face of NETV…”

“One of them…”

“That would cause more of a stir. I just hope no bigwigs go in there after him.”

“We hop on a plane early tomorrow. You ready?”

“Of course, I’m ready. I can’t wait to get in there. We’ve wasted enough time here.”

“It’s only been a day, Merci.”

“I know, but have you been following the reports?” It was rhetorical, as she knew Matti had, and in fact, passed along updates to her.

“You think it will be done before we get there?”

“Well...Yeah. Don’t you? I mean, the full invasion, of course. Not the insurgency sure to follow. The Aussies are blazing through there...as we knew they would, but...I was hoping to cover some of it before the collapse.”

“We’ll make it. Don’t worry.”

“It takes over a full day to fly there from here.”

“I’m aware of that. I booked the tickets, remember?”

“Yeah.” She tired of the conversation. I’ll see you in the morning, I’m hitting the hotel bar.”

“Merci, keep fresh, get some sleep.”

“Honestly, ya gotta stop ya Boy Scout. This is how I work and you better get used to it. Sleep will come on the plane, plenty of time to do my research and sleep. You just have your stuff ready. Keep the info coming, Matti.”

“Oh, I will. I’m pretty caught up now and I have all the other updates going into a file automatically...Maybe I’ll join ya.”

“There ya go!”

“Just gotta dump this camera off in Otto’s room, first, and my own gear.” And Merci’s, but he wouldn’t rub that in.

“Yep, have fun. Meet ya in there...or not.”

THE NEXT DAY

After a few drinks and cozying in, it was the next morning. Despite the early hour and lack of sleep, Mercinda looked very well for the wear. She had fixed her hair, reapplied makeup and could go in front of the camera at any time. She was determined to become the #1 Conflict Correspondent for NETV, and wouldn’t let any little detail get in the way.

Otto, meanwhile, had had a rough night getting over his questionable dinner. Matti had dragged him out of bed and gotten him ready, as he didn’t show up on time in the lobby. Knowing it might be an issue, Matti and Merci had stopped him as they saw him stagger out of the lobby bathrooms last night, as they awaited their drinks in the bar. They had told Otto to arrive 25 minutes earlier than necessary so they could catch their shuttle. Sure enough, Matti was on the case, running for the elevators, while Merci wrapped up the bill at the concierge desk. There was a way to check out online, but she was old fashioned and believed in getting it all done the proper way, to avoid any unforeseen hassles.

They caught the shuttle on time, checked in at the airport, and were on their way out over the ocean soon enough.

Matti leaned forward in his seat and out over the aisle,
“We’ll be met by our guide, Jamshid, in Uzbekistan. He’s got a way to get us over the border.”

“Why don’t we just get an official escort in with the Aussies?”

“Because, Otto, we’re trying to get in good with both sides, to get the full story. What do you think the odds are that the Tajiks will talk to us as we ride in on a full flagged Aussie car?”

“We’re gonna piss off the Aussies.”

Merci chimed in,
“No, they understand. You heard Williams. They know the drill. I can’t see how they could take it personally, especially considering that we came here first.”

“Your questions…”

Matti, having also been vocal about her not rocking the boat, surprisingly came to her defense,
“...Are the questions a journalist needed to ask. No softballing here. This is the business and ya know it, Otto. We gotta be taken seriously.”

“I know this is the biggest show we’ve covered yet. Let’s not fuck it up, eh?”

“Otto, did ya take yer meds?”

“Aw shut up, hunchiga!”

Mercinda mocked a hurt, shocked face, then smiled as she cozied back into her seat.
“Whatever. Time to catch up on shut eye. You boys behave now…”
It wasn’t long before she was out, despite a bawling baby 5 rows back. Next stop Tashkent...with some Asian stop overs along the way.

The Lieutenant is onboard a Eakan Air Force RCC Baron and is on a reconnaissance mission to find and mark Tajik positions for ground troops, as the Lt is looking at the ground below with FLIR mode on his computer console, he notices a large build up of Tajik troops west of Dushanbe and calls it in to command at Fort Reskay. "This is Overseer 1-1, I have spotted a unusually large build up of troops west of Dushanbe and there is a small convoy, it seems as if their trying to move towards Uzbekistan" "Overseer 1-1, this is Overlord, we will send a SF team to ambush that convoy, do have anything else to report?" "Roger that, we do-" He is cutoff when a Anti air fire starts filling the air and hits the crafts 4th engine putting it on fire "This is Overseer 1-1 we are taking heavy anti air fire and have an engine burning" "Overseer 1-1, pr-static" "fuck they hit our communication system" the pilot of the plane Captain Mashcovsky tries to gain altitude when he gets a lock on his plane, the Crew Chief fires the jammers and the lock on goes away but then a 40mm anti air shell hits the 3rd engine taking it out, the fire on the 4th engine is put out only for a few seconds as another incendiary shell hits it and destroys it. "Fuck damn it, set a course for the base" "I'll try" the plane only has 50 percent power and manages to return to base. as the plane finishes parking, emergency vehicles rush towards it to put out the fire on the 4th engine. The crew starts leaving the plane and are put into ambulances and taken to the field hospital for check ups. While the plane is towed away to a hanger and is being worked on for repairs.

Location: West Dushanbe outskirts, Tajikistan, 19th April, 0700, Senior Sergeant Krinkov Sokolov, 69th Ranger Regiment, Eakan Army Rangers
As Krinkov is sitting at a table in the barracks playing cards with members of his squad, Colonel Raskovsky enters the barrack and motions towards Krinkov to follow him, once inside the Colonels office Raskovsky begins to brief the Senior Sergeant "Alright Krinkov, Your going to be deployed in about 5 mikes to capture a HVT of the Tajik Army, your going to be inserted via heli and will setup an ambush for the target and you will not harm him in anyway and can not shoot him. You have 5 mikes go get ready" "Will do, can I have a 1 hour break then afterwards?" "Fine Krinkov you can" with that Krinkov leaves the room and gathers his squad and heads to the supply depot to get their gear and weaponry. A few minutes later they are onboard a 2 Ka-60s armed with door mounted 7.62 miniguns. As they catch up to the convoy the squads marksmen Harin leans out the helicopter and aims his OSV-96 Anti material rifle at the lead vehicles engine and fires one shot which hits the engine block stopping the vehicle and in order to block their escape one of the helicopters moves in behind the convoy and the other in front as the Rangers disembark they begin opening fire on the guards of the Colonel, Krinkov and a fellow Ranger are moving up together when a guard of the Colonel fires a shot into his buddies shoulder wounding him, Krinkov quickly turns and drops the guard with 2 shots from his AK-250 and bends down to check on his buddy "You ok man?" "Yea im fine" after checking with the downed Ranger he and the rest of the squad move in and surround the middle vehicle carrying Colonel Nubuck. Krinkov hits the window with the butt of his rifle and pulls out the Colonel and flexi cuffs him, the Colonel is escorted to one of the Ka-60s and flown to Fort Reskay and is taken to solitary confinement in an unknown facility.

Captain Mike Sawyer, 5th Armored Brigade, Anzob Pass, Tajikistan
“All Allied forces, this is Falcon Actual, hold your position. The lead rain is inbound.” As Australian forces came to a halt, 30 F-15es and 30 A-10s swooped into the pass. They began to level the ground with their missiles and bombs. The enemy forces in the pass were bombarded as the aircraft cleared the pass. As the planes finished and the surviving forces began retreating, several apache attack helicopter flew in and laid waste to the Tajiks. “All Allied forces, this is Falcon Actual, you are clear to move forward. Advance at full speed and reinforce the 23rd Airborne north of Dushanbe. Godspeed gentlemen. Falcon Actual out.” The Australian spearhead began to move south through the wasted mountain pass.

Captain John Overton, 11th Special Operations Group, TF Mako, Khorugh, Tajikistan
“This is Mako One, we have confirmation on target.” Overton whispered through the headset as he looked through his scope. “It is Ali Baba.”
“Mako One One and One Two, green light.”
Two shots rang out sumultaneously as Haji Ehai Ibrahim dropped to the ground. The balcony on the second floor of the small house sprang to life as several cartel members rushed out to find the culprits. “Cobra dead. I repeat, Cobra dead.” The two-man sniper team slipped off the roof a quarter mile from the house. The two men jumped onto separate motor bikes and drove out of town. Within five minutes, they had been picked up by a S-97 Raider and were leaving the area.

Corporal Martin Vincent, 2nd Patrol Section of the 2nd NSOC, Vakhsh River, Khatlon Province, Tajikistan
“Croc one, this is Reaper two-three. I have five armed people trying to cross the river in two canoes. You’re clear to engage.”
“Roger Reaper two-three. We’ll take care of this. Over and out.”
Corporal Vincent saw his brother, Ger in the other boat. They nodded as they approached the canoes.
“Halt, this is the Australian Navy. Throw your weapons in the river and put your hands up right now!” Captain Brown said over the intercom. The five men replied with automatic fire. “Open fire! Take them down!” Both of the miniguns between the two craft opened up on the two canoes. The red tracer fire tore the canoes, and their occupants, in half.
“Mayday, mayday. This is Border Checkpoint two-two. We are under attack. We are being hit from both sides of the river. We need help!” A voice said over the radio.
“Let’s move.” Captain Brown said. “Border Checkpoint two-two. This is Croc one. We are inbound to your position. ETA ten minutes….”

Mubarak Hussein, unknown location in Tajikistan
“Damn it! Nubuck is done. Dushanbe has fallen. The border is cutoff. Now it is time for us to strike. Launch suicide attacks on FOB Falcon, the Eminrallian border post, and FOB Sekentro. Send them out.” Within ten minutes, three women is three different vehicles headed toward their targets. “I also want an offensive launched on all Afghan border posts. Send three hundred fighters to the border. And tell all Tajik armed forces personnel that they need to join with us to win this war. Five hundred Tariqs for every confirmed Allied special forces killed. Go now!”

Muhammed Parsa, unknown location in Dushanbe, Tajikistan
“Australian forces have taken the airport. Set these up around the airport. Be careful though, if you press down on the top, it will go off. Plant these on the rounds.” A group of local teens left the room where Parsa was speaking. They each had an improvised explosive device equipped with a biological agent: ricin. Roads in Dushanbe quickly began to clear as IEDs were placed on the roads.

Afghanistan-Tajikistan border
Knight-Lieutenant-Commandant Evan Masters
13th Combined Arms Brigade Combat Team

The desert in Afghanistan was dry and sterile, usually quiet as well. But right now it's tranquility was being interrupted by a massive column of vehicles driving north into Tajikistan. The Birtonian Ground Defense Force had been sent to help take some pressure of off the Australian forces who bore the brunt of the initial invasion. Evan was in his command vehicle, a modified Wolf Armaments Bär heavy APC with plenty of command and control equipment in it.

His column stretched for miles, with various armored vehicles, tracked and not, along with towed and self propelled artillery pieces. The dusty roads kicked up clouds even longer than the rolling mountains themselves. Radio chatter was filling the inside of the commanders vehicle as they approached the Tajikistani border. Last report was that the bridges were destroyed but friendly forces had stabilized the area.

The border crossing was uneventful, and momentarily the unit approached the destroyed bridges, however there was no sign of Australian forces, but at the same time no enemy either. The vehicles pulled off of the road, alternating left and right, known as a "herringbone" maneuver. Men began dismounting their trucks and gathering off the line, a few men smoked and joked while they waited.

They were currently waiting on the engineer platoon from the attached brigade support battalion to make their way up. They had a bridge laying tank and we're going to use it to span the river. While they waited Evan pulled up a general frequency to hopefully communicate with the Australians.

"Any Australian element this is Black six, how copy over?" He asked into the microphone.
