The year 1861, the day July 21st. After a series of battles between both parties, many inconclusive and others not forces of both McDowell and Beauregard meet in Fairfax county Virginia, unknown to them and the soldiers fighting they will be engaging in of the bloodiest battles of the civil war.

Vincent mutters and looks at his shoes as his feet begin to blisters. Him and his Army have been traveling for about one day now, North west to get to Richmond before the Union does. Word of Union advancements have not reached his army yet and the officers and generals are completely oblivious and unknown of Union activity. Little does he know that he will stumble into a massive bloodbath.

John Salter continues to work long hours in the workshop with his mentor and learns valuable skills while doing so. Each day the paper came and would talk about the war between the confederacy and the Union. Being an African American, the Union gave him another chance at life by giving him freedom so he felt an obligation to fight in the Union army however African Americans were not welcomed in the military ranks but he was still ready to fight if and when the first colored regiment is established.

The 116th Pennsylvania marched on to a Union town to supply and move out.

it was dawn and Campbell was up and awake armed with his Springfield rifled musket he and his fellow rebel will soon fight and die on the field of battle but for now he keeps a journal of events he writes: after a weeks march me and my comrades are exhausted any hope of sleep is dim but for now I just want to fight another day for tomorrow will be a hell of sorts its a pity I can't just leave but I have duty to my state and thats that

Paul Saltzmann awoke, fatigued from yesterday's drills. He walks over to the camp latrine where a few fellows are doing their business, taking a break from the watch shifts, and brushing their teeth. Paul looks out to the fields of inland Pennsylvania, where fog appears in the distance song with some farms. He checks his watch while the birds doing in the woods. 05:15. Just before wake time and breakfast. Paul does his business in the latrine, which stinks from overuse and lack of maintenance. It was his turn to cook breakfast. He took some flour and some water and some sugar and made simple pancakes, like in Germany. The tents stirred with men beginning to awake.

He finishes, and writes in his journal. He writes no letters, as he has no family. Things could not have been different now. We marched from the armory in New Jersey to here, some eighty miles of walking. In between marching, we set up camp. Right after doing that, we start to drill. After that, some more drills. Then drill, and more drills, and some more drilling after that. To end the day, we do a few more sets of drills. Between drills, we drill. Yes, things couldn't be more fun at the New York Fifth Volunteer Infantry. When we will ever see real fighting?!

Campbell put his journal away and stood up looking out over the horizion yet he saw nothing in site he then return to his tent and went into a light sleep little did he know about the things to come.

William steps out of his tent in full uniform and looks down from the hill sits on and looks over his "army" camped below. He sighs
"These aren't soldiers...These are boys hoping to make a name for themselves." He takes drink of some dark coffee in his hands "Well we got some work to do."
An hour later he calls his army group at attention and drills begun. For the next 10 hours this army group drills marching, formations, signaling, and finally firing drills. The over all drillings were not acceptable and when William received orders to move to Kentucky, he denied them. His soldiers weren't ready but he was going to make them ready he requested 3 weeks to get them trained, commanded hesitantly accepted.

John sits an a fence while looking across the crowded street at the Boston Office of Recruitment. He eventually got up and crossed the street before walking into the building. He looked around, the inhabitants were almost 100% white but it didn't matter to him. He walked up to the desk and looked at the officer on duty "I would like to join the Union Army, sir."

The recruitment officer looks at him with a almost dumbfounded look. "Excuse me son?"

He looks up and down the man in almost disbelief. "Well if you say so, just know what you're getting into.....what's your occupation."

Paul begins to serve breakfast to his mates who had gotten out of their tents. Quite a few of the poor fellows were African-Americans. He winced as one white man smashed an African-American in the face. The man yelled at the poor fellow who got smacked, "You don't deserve to be here, dirty illiterate bastard! You ain't no soldier boy!"

Paul ran to the scene. He yelled " You say illiterate, but you have your grammar all wrong! It's You're not a soldier, boy!' You get half a pancake, because you're only half of a man!" Paul then shoved the flabbergasted white man away, and tended to the face of the African-American. "Don't worry son. You won't be seeing that man ever again."

"Thank you, sir." The fellow answered.

"The name is Paul. Paul Saltzmann." Paul extended his hand. The African-American took it, and shook it. Paul served the black an extra pancake, with some of the bitter that was left. Paul gave a tired sigh. He sees this all too often.

"I currently work as an apprentice for a carpenter here in Boston."

He chuckles to himself a bit before looking at the man. "Well you look fit enough, healthy, and that's a good thing. Well you sure son, you won't get any sympathy from both sides."

"I'm a free man because of the Union, it's only right that I fight in return."

"Sorry guy, but your out of luck. Against the law for a colored man to take up arms for the army." He says, pulling out a federal army book, and showing him the print.

He nods "Very well." He walks out of the building. He goes back over to the fence and takes a seat on it while considering other ways to get into a union uniform.

Brigadier general Frederick George Harrison leads his Army of the Cumberland of about 7,000 men, the 2nd Minnesota Regiment Volunteer Infantry of about 1,000 men, the 3rd Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry of about 800 men, and the 3rd United States Reserve Corps Infantry of about 1,300 strait thru Washington D.C. to Manassas where General McDowell needed reinforcements. Frederick yells "Double quick time! Com'on!" to get to McDowell quicker.
