You are a Shape Shifter (or a human), and your job is to make Humans happier. In any way possible. But alas, your job comes with a price.
Like your title suggests, you are a shape shifter. Feeling one emotion could turn you into a bird, a rat, an elephant, or even a tardigrade!
You have this to prevent feeling another emotion, which is opposite to your chosen one. You must always feel your chosen emotion. Always. Why? Why not?!

And to shift back into a human, you need a hug.

You have woken up in a neighborhood in a Human's house, who appears to be of teenage age. Your job is to fulfill their expectations for themselves, or even exceed it! To make them feel love, or to make them hate you and bond over hating you! Your pick.

(The first accepted human will be the house owner of the place the Shifter's stay in. And to make it easier, let's just assume that (s)he doesn't have any parents.)
