For thousands of years the Scinfaxi had spread across the Orion Arm. A parasitoid alien consciousness, the Scinfaxi mind was driven by the simple need to expand, to spread the virus that sustained them. Unable to even conceptualize failure, they swept across the galaxy. On planets that harbored life The Virus absorbed all it touched, transforming once fertile worlds into barren husks of Scinfaxi growth.
Sentient life, while rare has been encountered by the Scinfaxi periodically over the course of their expansion. While the spread of The Virus had been slowed considerably by resistance, over time such resistance withered and the nature of the conquered races was absorbed into the Scinfaxi mind. In several cases the process of absorption was left incomplete as elements of the opposing races escaped from the grasp of the Scinfaxi into space. While unfortunate, the Scinfaxi were content with the knowledge that sooner or later the advance of the Virus would catch up with those remnants.
Now the Scinfaxi having prepared themselves sufficiently, have decided it’s time to launch the final blow against the escaped sentients. But the remnants of the races have been preparing for the worst, and it’s clear that soon enough the fate of the Milky Way will be decided.
Credit for the Scinfaxi goes to the Dawn of Victory Mod Team. I didn't create this nor do I claim to.

UNDF Olympus Mons, In orbit of Baldur, Atlas System
January 3rd, 2400 C.E.
09:32
Captain Kenneth Robinson lifted the mug of morning coffee to his lips taking a sip from it. Goddamn routine missions to the frontier, he thought, nothing interesting ever happens out here. Maybe there would be a stray freighter or terrorists would attempt something, but in such a small system it was incredibly unlikely. Baldur itself only had a single city with a few farms around it, only 93,000 people lived here. The colony was new enough that independence movements hadn't even taken place among the populace yet. He set the coffee mug on the desk in front of him.
Most of the crew hadn't even gone down to the service during leave, for there wasn't anything to actually do there. Some crew members even joked that the ship had better food than the planet did. The UNDF Olympus Mons was the only warship in the Atlas System, and it was only a cruiser, and the only other military forces were a few detachments of Colonial Military Army soldiers located on Baldur's surface. If anything happened he was quite literally on his own.
The crew was going about it's normal morning routine when suddenly the Olympus Mons shipboard AI 'Kelly' suddenly appeared in a holotank nearby, "It would appear if comm is correct there appears to have been a translight disruption in the Outer System. And it doesn't have any human tags on it."
"Kelly, call all members on the surface back up. Inform the Colonial Army commanders of what is going on. We're trapped until we reach full capacity. Also start to bring the weapons systems online, I pray to God we don't need them but we might." Robinson opened the door from his quarters and started for the bridge.
