[Region Application] Northernlands Roleplay Application

Hello and welcome to the application topic of the Northernlands region. Northernlands is a new region, created on 13.05.2015. and it is open for new nations who wish to join us(no puppets please). T

You can see our regional map in our "World Factbook".
The map will get new land masses on request and when we estimate that it's needed. The map will only grow on the line east-west.

Northernlands is a real-time roleplay region, but we have limited usage of certain futuristic technologies(for first wave and first sub-wave only). In certain situations we also might use the Random Number Generator(RNG), when one side requests it and if the others involved agree to it. If you are not interasted in roleplaying(yet or at all), you may still join the region without filling the application(in that case please contact Ordoxia).

We are using a custom map so we will add new continents and islands when we estimate that it's needed. For now, we have a "first come first served" policy, which means that those who come among the first will have more options to pick which part of the regions they want to place their country in, among other benefits.
We are also using the "wave" system, or "wave of joining" system. That means that countries that join our region join in waves, which means that the limitations of the wave they join in apply to them. First two waves have no special restrictions, except the size of the country and the nature(and number) of the "advantage points" they can pick. Each wave, except the first wave, has five slots for countries. The first wave is the wave of founders and countries which contribute to the developement and management of the region. Countries in the first wave, even when they are not founders, can be considered managers of the region and our roleplays. A spot in the first sub-wave is the biggest reward for activity and contribution to the developement of our region.


Benefits for countries that join depend on when they are joining. The sooner a nation applies, the more benefits it gets. General benefits which are granted to every country, but in diferent ammount and/or form are:
-You can pick the location and the size of your country, but there must be clear diferences in size/characteristics between each wave of nations.
-You can pick one or more field(s) in which your country will be "the best" in(economicaly, politicaly or militarely). This number gets lower for each new wave, until it completely dissapears.
-You get more freedom in picking your stats in the application. Each wave starting from the third will have some limitations.



At the very start, please read the Introduction to Nationstates Roleplay if you are new to roleplaying.
You can see explanations of some terms that will be used later in the application
Human Development Index:
Takes into account the life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators of the citizens in the country. It can be High, Medium or Low. Richer countries have a higher HDI, provided that they provide quality for their people.


Government Type:
Democracy = Means that there are regular elections for government every couple of years, not taking into account their quality(eg. are they free or fair). It can be Direct or Representative Democracy.
Monarchy = Means that a King or a Tsar(common for Empires) is the official leader of the nation. Monarchy can be Absolute, Constitutional, Elective etc.
Oligarchy = Meaning that the country is ruled by a small number of people. It can be Aristocracy, Timocracy, Military junta, Stratocracy etc.


Government Classification:
"A unitary state is a state governed as one single power in which the central government is ultimately supreme and any administrative divisions (subnational units) exercise only powers that their central government chooses to delegate."

"A Federation, is a political entity characterized by a union of partially self-governing states or regions under a central (federal) government."
Neither the Federal government nor the self-govering regions/states can usualy make unilateral decisions that have an effect on the other.

"Usually created by treaty but often later adopting a common constitution, Confederations tend to be established for dealing with critical issues (such as defense, foreign affairs, or a common currency), with the central government being required to provide support for all members."


Military Level:
Shows the capability and state in the military of the country(usualy including overal discipline and training).

Superpower = Has the potential to intervene militarily almost anywhere in the region/planet. It's military equipment can use advanced or ordinary technology.
Regional Power = Can militarily intervene only in the countries on it's continent, while intervening in other continents is possible but takes more time to organise than usual. It can be equipped with advanced, ordinary or poor military technology.
Local Power = Can only intervene in bordering countries. It can be equipped with ordinary or poor military equipment, with limited advanced technology.
Poor = The military of the country is in a very bad shape for various reasons. It is mostly poorly equipped, but a limited number can have normal, or in some cases very, very limited advanced military technology.


Total fertility rate:
"The total fertility rate (TFR) is the average number of children that would be born to a woman over her lifetime if:

-She were to experience the exact current age-specific fertility rates (ASFRs) through her lifetime, and
-She were to survive from birth through the end of her reproductive life."

NOTE: Each wave of countries except the first has five slots for nations. The first wave is a wave for a founder(s) and managers, while the first sub-wave is a wave for deserving members who contributed a lot to the developement of the region who might also be roleplay managers. That means that the first wave(and the firsy sub-wave) offers certain benefits, but they have to be under the already existing rules.
Since the third wave newly applied countries can not be superpowers. From the fifth wave each wave gets a new limitation.

The advanced points(or "best in" points), is a system created to get more members to join our region and increase the quality of the roleplay. Each wave of countries has a diferent number of advanced points, which basicaly means that you can pick several things(depending on the wave you joined in) your country will officialy be best in the region in.
That doesn't neccessarely have to mean anything in the roleplay, but it should make countries more careful in confronting eachother and force them to pick a battle in the field in which they have more chance to win in. By that, i don't just mean wars and military conflicts, but economy such as trade and embargos and other things you can come up with.
Example:
Country "A" decided to spend one of it's advanced points on "having the most armoured tanks". That means that country "A" objectively does have the best armoured tanks in the region, which also means that if country "B" wants to attack country "A", it isn't likely to win if it goes to a 1:1 tank battle. It can still happen, but usualy country "A would win in such a situation.
On the other hand, if country "A" has "the most armoured tanks", while country "B" has "the most powerful tanks", in a 1:1 tank battle the two should cancel eachother out.
This is not a rule, but it's a fact that can be used in OOC communication to justify more/less losses. Anyway, even then, try not to fall into a routine of winning every battle just because you have better units than your opponent. Even in real life nothing is perfect, an Anti-Air system produced in the 60s, which was poorly maintained can destroy a modern airplane.

In another situation, if main export of country "A" is food, and it wants to put an embargo on trade with country "B", the embargo won't be much effective if one of the main products of country "B" is also food, or if another country or several are exporting food to them.

There are many things you can pick, proveded that it isn't taken yet. If you don't understand very well what this means, look what the countries below picked to get some examples.

History:
An old Kingdom which always addapted trough it's relatively peaceful history. The Monarchs never alowed violent internal divisions and severely punished those who were causing them.
Ordoxia is traditionaly a largely isolationist country with a complete self sufficient economy. Restraint in industrialisation and mining is keeping the nature of Ordoxia almost intacted, giving it a big tourism potential. Due to strict laws and self-isolation of the nation, it is not used to it's full potential internationaly and Ordoxia is also forced to import most of raw materials from other countries to be able to export it's products in large numbers. However, the people of Ordoxia are still able to enjoy the nature of their nation which is very restricted for foreigners. The government-funded healthcare of Ordoxia is offten praised as a provideer of the best care on the world, but it is not available for foreigners. The compassion of Ordoxians is reserved for their fellow nationals and friendly countries, while they are arrogant when it comes to other foreigners. Collectivism is nurtured for several centuries, and is implemented in early in life along with loyalty and tradition. Kingdom of Ordoxia is a traditionaly religious country, and religion pays a big role in the life of every Ordoxian.
Ordoxia has a standing army of ~750 000 soldiers, while conscription is obligatory for all males aged from 18 to 35. Conscription lasts for two years, and the army is among the most valued and best paid establishments of Ordoxia.
Ordoxia maintains a medium police force and a large inteligence network. Foreigners are treated with distrust by both the security forces and the citizens, and the country maintains strictly controled borders. Illegal aliens are immediately escourted out of the country, and it's almost impossible to get an asylum in the Kingdom.
It is among if not the most advanced nation in medical research, one of the leading nations in space exploration and the development of new technologies.
The most advanced technology of Ordoxia can not be sold to foreign countries, companies or individuals.

History:
Originally founded as the Iverik Union in the 1100's, after multiple tribes and merchant companies fighting for dominance and power over the region. Originally the Union was a united-confederacy, allowing each of the tribes their own level of autonomy within the Iverik Union. However, later on with the Union failing, the Iverik Union was officially dissolved and in it's place the Iverik Empire was founded, based on the ideals of Imperialism, Liberty, Justice, Equality, and Tolerance. The Empire stomped each tribe to have fewer rights, turning the Empire from a Confederacy into an effective Federation. From there, with a centralized government that could get things done, one of the most rapid and violent military campaigns ever in human history occurred. One of the biggest factors for what made it so successful was the mentality of the invaders: instead of simply going around looting villages, killing all their men, and raping their women, the Iveriks did the opposite. The Iveriks welcomed the conquered as equal Iverik citizens too, allowing their own religion and cultures peacefully co-exist.

In the 1400's, a new group of thinkers of the Optikist faith (a religion very similar to that of Islam, one of the big differences being it includes two gods instead of just one) quickly stormed the capitol building, killing most of the leaders of the Empire and declaring the Iverik Empire a theocratic monarchy. Followed by mass purges of Christians, Atheists, Jews, Muslims, and heretical cultures, this massively threw the Empire into civil turmoil. By the late 1600's, the Theocracy was finally overthrown and replaced by a new democratic government, following most of the ideals of the last one. Some of the big differences being this one embraced capitalism as an economic system, and was very anti-imperialist. During the reign of this government, personal liberties drastically increased, with the Empire being one of the freest nations of the world. However, with poor economic regulation, the economy began to stagnate. With an anti-imperialist approach, the Empire began to lose more of it's fringe land, leading to the first time in history a significant decline in Imperial land.

With mass exploitation of the working class, eventually a man by the name of John Krakenour was born. Born into a upper-middle class family in 1861, Krakenour not only had excellent grades in school that his parents afforded for him, he also took a big interest in politics. Especially with the exploited nature of the Empire. Eventually John Krakenour wrote a book titled "The Workers' Revolt" in which he outlined a new ideology and how it would work. He coined it as Iverik Socialism, and even founded a party known as "The Socialist Federative Party", which rapidly caught on. Due to a liberal democratic government that didn't really suppress the flow of new ideas, The SFP grew faster then any other political party in Iverik history. By the mid-1890's, Krakenour began to form a movement based on toppling the current Democratic regime and creating a new, Iverik Socialist State. Originally considered a complete failure, with Krakenour himself almost being killed and his Party being pushed into rural areas to survive. By 1897, the Party's public opinion was spectacular even if they were violent. The public mentality at the time considered them the under dogs trying to fight for the working class against a tyrannical government. Eventually this lead to protests, and even armed killings of Iverik police and capitalist politicians. In the year 1899, on one of the largest workers' strikes outside the capitol building, Krakenour himself held a speech about Iverik Socialism and the workers' dream. Eventually the mass of humans beings marched violently into the capitol, all guards were shot and politicians were arrested. By 1899, The Democratic Federative Iverik Empire was renamed to the Socialist Federative Iverik Empire, and proclaimed officially as an Iverik Socialist state. Despite originally promoting freedoms, the new system put in place by Krakenour secretly bred both Atheistic beliefs and a complete cult of personality to Krakenour. By the 1920's, with a new and healthy generation indoctrinated and massivily increased powers of the police and military, Kraken Our enacted the "Totalitarian Reform" of the 1920's. This "reform" essentially founded the modern government of the Empire. Originally met with protests and revolution, these were quickly killed off and potrayed in the media as acts of Capitalist counter-revolution against the Socialist government. Followed by mass purges of political opponents of the Party, and the Empire also began to weed out those that didn't speak English. Typically people who were not fluent in English were worked to death in forced labour camps while their children taken away at birth to purposely be raised by native English-speaking pro-Party nationalists.

Krakenour was killed in 1933, by the Iverik Freedom Resistance, a group made up of survivors from the old government, non-English speakers, business men and women, and people that described themselves as true socialists. Despite Krakenour being killed, the Empire was already a complete oligarchy at this point. The IFR continued guerilla tactics, and attacking military targets, with their membership steadily decreasing throughout the decades.

National Issues and Problems: A totalitarian state rules the Empire. Due to the State's complete power, dissent cannot be articulated and is often stomped out in early childhood one way or another. Due to the climate of the Empire, disease is also common for it being a developed nation, and the international opinion of the Empire isn't great.

History: Russlavia was formed from war, almost entirely. In the years leading up to 800 After Christ Russian clans fought among each other until one clan reigned superior and set up the Russlavic Union.

Before the dawn of the 1000 years, massive reserves of natural reserves were discovered, splitting the nation into three parties. They all fought for control of the resources. One party was Commander Federov's Republic of Russlavia, who eventually joined with the forces of the self-proclaimed Russlav Provisional Pioneers, against the Social-Democratic Imperium of Russlavia. After decades of sustained fighting the Imperium of Russlavia was finally destroyed. A new war occurred a century later in 1120 between monarchists and republicans, with the monarchists winning. They proceeded to set up a brutal system of feudalism, with occasional revolutions shaking the empire and then being crushed, or other sovereign states invading. 

It all changed in 1873 when a radical leftist party demanded the abdication of the monarchs and giving rights to the proletariat and the working classes. Naturally, the nobility attempted to stamp out the Working Party of Russlavia but were met with fierce resistance. The January 1st revolution marked the beginning of the monarchist downfall, as the country gradually turned against the Tsar and his allies. Sometime after the war, a psychotic, paranoid dictator took power disregarding everything had had been done to give power to the people. He set in motion brutal reform after brutal reform, turning the Russlavic Socialist Republics into a power to be reckoned with, but alienating his subjects bit by bit. In 1929, a party advocating freedom of speech, assembly, press, voting, and more popped up and gained support in the Russlavic interior. They were brutally suppressed. Mass killings of their supporters led to a full-on civil war in the early 1930s between the dictator, Georgy Voskhov, and his supporters, mostly high-ranking government members. By December of 1932, most of the army had mutinied. Voskhov was found buried in the rubble of the Red Fortress, and was executed for thousands to see by hanging. A new age had begun.

History: The modern history of Mansuriyyah starts in the 19th century, but its roots are much earlier. During the late 18th century and beginning of the 19th, the area that nowadays belongs to Mansuriyyah was composed by several smaller states: the sultanates of Mosadegh, Hawaha and Kaykubad, and the emirates of al-Jouf, Qatif and al-Buraimi. While different in their ethnic composition and organization, all these states had one thing in common: they were decadent shells of what they had once been. Hawaha, Kaykubad and al-Buraimi had started a process of westernization at the turn of the century, having largely abandoned Islamic Law and traditions, while Mosadegh, al-Jouf and Qatif lived under oppressive monarchies, who explored the people to keep their luxurious lifestyles. Qatif even became a de facto colony of a foreign power.

It all started to change in 1831, when the Sultan of Hawaha imposed a new series of westernizing reforms. Sultan Hamid Sulayman, who had been educated overseas as a young man and considered his country backwards, wished to modernize it and transform it into an advanced, modern society, thus had been slowly adopting measures in this sense since he reached power, 10 years prior. Now, he had gone too far: he officially abolished the sharia courts and Islamic law, and adopted a new, western style Constitution and law. The majority of the population, already scandalized by his reforms, couldn’t accept this and rebelled against the government, taking up arms against it. The Sultan reacted violently, using large number of foreign mercenaries to fight against his own people. The rebels at the beginning lacked cohesion and suffered great losses, seeming destined to defeat, until they were unified under the command of a single, charismatic leader, Shaykh Mansur al-Hiwani, a sufi naqshbandi Shaykh and Islamic scholar. During the next 6 years, he used guerilla tactics to counter attach the Sultan’s troops, until he had him under siege in the capital where he was betrayed. The people of the neighboring nations, witnessing the success of Mansur’s revolution, took up arms against their own governments and pleaded loyalty to Mansur, who established back the Sharia and founded the Shura Council. Shaykh Mansur ruled for 14 years, at the end of which he ruled most of what is today’s Mansuriyyah, but didn’t live to see the state he founded in its greatest extension; only in 1891 the emirate of Qatif would fall and Mansuriyyah would acquire its modern borders.

The 20th century was a time of great transformations for Mansuriyyah. With the discovery of large oil reserves, the economy started to shift from mostly agriculture and handcrafts into a more modern one, was the money flowed in. The increase in wealth also brought a rise in the living standards, as the government used most of this wealth to improve the lives of its citizens and modernize the country, initiating massive irrigation programs, infrastructure building as well as investing in education. The progress was temporally halted during the Zeydani Civil War between 1941 and 1947, where separatists headed by the Zeydan tribe tried to secede and create their own state between the oil rich Provinces of al-Ahsa and Samarra.

A major shift started in in 1968 when Hatem al-Khatib was selected as the new Amir. He envisioned Mansuriyyah not as an isolationist country, but as a world power. He realized that the country’s economy was too dependent on oil extraction, and invested heavily to change that. Massive economical reforms were instituted and the industrial basis was expanded and diversified, and after a generation, now Mansuriyyah has a modern economy, which can work even when the oil reserves dry up. He also took a more active international role, creating economic and diplomatic ties but also adopting a more hard-line position whenever Muslim minorities’ rights were violated.

In 2008, with the demise of Hatem al-Khatib, a new Amir was selected by the Shura Council. A teacher and scholar, he is considered more of an idealist. So far he has kept his predecessors’ economic reforms, as well introduced some social reforms, like local elections for some officials.

National Issues and Problems: Mansuriyyah has vast regions of arid and semi-arid climate, and thus its agriculture is dependent on advanced irrigation and soil management techniques. Droughts are a serious issue and a severe one can cause serious socioeconomic troubles. There are other two main issues: part of the population – usually young people – are shunning from Mansuriyyah’s traditional conservative values; the other is a small, but very vocal fundamentalist mnority, that thinks that the Government is not conservative enough

History:
Originally founded as the Iverik Union in the 1100's, after multiple tribes and merchant companies fighting for dominance and power over the region. Originally the Union was a united-confederacy, allowing each of the tribes their own level of autonomy within the Iverik Union. However, later on with the Union failing, the Iverik Union was officially dissolved and in it's place the Iverik Empire was founded, based on the ideals of Imperialism, Liberty, Justice, Equality, and Tolerance. The Empire stomped each tribe to have fewer rights, turning the Empire from a Confederacy into an effective Federation. From there, with a centralized government that could get things done, one of the most rapid and violent military campaigns ever in human history occurred. One of the biggest factors for what made it so successful was the mentality of the invaders: instead of simply going around looting villages, killing all their men, and raping their women, the Iveriks did the opposite. The Iveriks welcomed the conquered as equal Iverik citizens too, allowing their own religion and cultures peacefully co-exist.

In the 1400's, a new group of thinkers of the Optikist faith (a religion very similar to that of Islam, one of the big differences being it includes two gods instead of just one) quickly stormed the capitol building, killing most of the leaders of the Empire and declaring the Iverik Empire a theocratic monarchy. Followed by mass purges of Christians, Atheists, Jews, Muslims, and heretical cultures, this massively threw the Empire into civil turmoil. By the late 1600's, the Theocracy was finally overthrown and replaced by a new democratic government, following most of the ideals of the last one. Some of the big differences being this one embraced capitalism as an economic system, and was very anti-imperialist. During the reign of this government, personal liberties drastically increased, with the Empire being one of the freest nations of the world. However, with poor economic regulation, the economy began to stagnate. With an anti-imperialist approach, the Empire began to lose more of it's fringe land, leading to the first time in history a significant decline in Imperial land.

With mass exploitation of the working class, eventually a man by the name of John Krakenour was born. Born into a upper-middle class family in 1861, Krakenour not only had excellent grades in school that his parents afforded for him, he also took a big interest in politics. Especially with the exploited nature of the Empire. Eventually John Krakenour wrote a book titled "The Workers' Revolt" in which he outlined a new ideology and how it would work. He coined it as Iverik Socialism, and even founded a party known as "The Socialist Federative Party", which rapidly caught on. Due to a liberal democratic government that didn't really suppress the flow of new ideas, The SFP grew faster then any other political party in Iverik history. By the mid-1890's, Krakenour began to form a movement based on toppling the current Democratic regime and creating a new, Iverik Socialist State. Originally considered a complete failure, with Krakenour himself almost being killed and his Party being pushed into rural areas to survive. By 1897, the Party's public opinion was spectacular even if they were violent. The public mentality at the time considered them the under dogs trying to fight for the working class against a tyrannical government. Eventually this lead to protests, and even armed killings of Iverik police and capitalist politicians. In the year 1899, on one of the largest workers' strikes outside the capitol building, Krakenour himself held a speech about Iverik Socialism and the workers' dream. Eventually the mass of humans beings marched violently into the capitol, all guards were shot and politicians were arrested. By 1899, The Democratic Federative Iverik Empire was renamed to the Socialist Federative Iverik Empire, and proclaimed officially as an Iverik Socialist state. Despite originally promoting freedoms, the new system put in place by Krakenour secretly bred both Atheistic beliefs and a complete cult of personality to Krakenour. By the 1920's, with a new and healthy generation indoctrinated and massivily increased powers of the police and military, Kraken Our enacted the "Totalitarian Reform" of the 1920's. This "reform" essentially founded the modern government of the Empire. Originally met with protests and revolution, these were quickly killed off and potrayed in the media as acts of Capitalist counter-revolution against the Socialist government. Followed by mass purges of political opponents of the Party, and the Empire also began to weed out those that didn't speak English. Typically people who were not fluent in English were worked to death in forced labour camps while their children taken away at birth to purposely be raised by native English-speaking pro-Party nationalists.

Krakenour was killed in 1933, by the Iverik Freedom Resistance, a group made up of survivors from the old government, non-English speakers, business men and women, and people that described themselves as true socialists. Despite Krakenour being killed, the Empire was already a complete oligarchy at this point. The IFR continued guerilla tactics, and attacking military targets, with their membership steadily decreasing throughout the decades.

National Issues and Problems: A totalitarian state rules the Empire. Due to the State's complete power, dissent cannot be articulated and is often stomped out in early childhood one way or another. Due to the climate of the Empire, disease is also common for it being a developed nation, and the international opinion of the Empire isn't great.

History:many years ago a radical (insert nation name here) man called Arnold turtle made a largish following wich thought that turtles helped God make the universe and should be worshiped. This idea was fround upon so Arnold made a ship called big al and with his following of 100 people sailed to a new land the turtle lands! Then they were forgotten and I guess the turtle lands will be discovered by some explorers in the present day.

History: An ancient empire which has always dealt with problems by ether killing it or invading it. The Lagounov family came to power at the beginning of Etarmoofs history and has held etarmoof with a iron fist, smothering any resistance. Etarmoof has held on to a belief of superiority, and because of this racially different groups have always been eliminated from the gene pool. Etarmoof also believe it should maintain a pure gene pool and will cull entire family's if one of the members has a mental, of physical disorder that can be passed the genetics. Despite being very conservative, Etarmoof, has always been near the forefront of the development of new military and industrial technologies, and is very reluctant to share them.

In the year 622 BCE a man declared the founding of the Etarmoof Empire this man was Eamonn Dmitry Augustus Lagounov, one of the original leaders of the Etarmoof Empire's royal family, after several brutal unification wars. He had to contend with many problems most notably the lack of communication, and the prospect of running such a diverse, and large nation. Eamonn Dmitry launched several wars t wipe out the largest ethnic communities that would not assimilate in to etarmoof culture, and abandoned many of the far flung regions. Eamonn Dmitry began to set up the model for many of the bureaucracy in the region. He also began to build many wonders to showcase his power. He also set about building a road network to unite his nation. However in the year 589 B.C.E Eamonn Dmitry died before many of his project were complete.

For the next one thousand years Etarmoof developed itself into an extremely efficient nation, with many modern institutions. The military has been honed into a brutally efficient fighting force, despite there being little growth in the borders. Etarmoof had a series of bad emperors hich led to the Etarmoof Civil War which still effects many dissensions to this day. After the civil war Etarmoof went into isolation for 86 years. Etarmoof went on a rapid industrial build up, exhausted many of the nations resources and leaving much of the nation a barren waste land. The nation also became the most authoritarian in the region, the government controlling every aspect of society on a endless mission for utter efficiency.

National Issues and Problems: Destroyed environment, slavery(though not considered one), corrupt government system, lack of well funded social services, genocidal hatred of other races, totalitarian government, prison camps.

History: The Allied States of Zaltaria were founded this year after the collapse of the Zaltarian Empire 20 years ago. Many warlords backed by there local tribes began to attempted to build up there own nations, many were short lived. The once advanced infrastructure set up by colonial power was devastated by the 2 decades of war. With many tribes suffering from famine and with all government service completely abandoned Zaltarian regressed back to an tribal nation. The most powerful of the tribal leaders came together and created a new nation, after 2 decades of war and instability, hoping to fix the problems and create a new era of stability.
