Magic: The Academy (MtG, OOC, Sign Ups)

Postby The BaRen » Fri May 08, 2015 8:05 pm

You
Are
A
Planeswalker

In Magic: The Gathering, a Planeswalker is a powerful mage who is able to travel across the planes of existence. There are infinite worlds across the Multiverse, and Planeswalkers are unique in their ability to move from one world to the next, expanding their knowledge and power through the experiences they collect there.
One in a million sentient beings are born with “the spark,” the ineffable essence that makes an individual capable of becoming a Planeswalker. Of those born with “the spark,” even fewer “ignite” their spark, enabling them to realize their potential and travel the planes. Most Planeswalkers have their spark ignited as the result of a great crisis or trauma, but every awakening is different. A near-death experience might ignite a Planeswalker’s spark, but so could a sudden, life-changing epiphany or a meditative trance that enables the mage’s grasp of some transcendent truth. There are as many such stories as there are Planeswalkers.

Colors
of
Magic

Mages and planeswalkers of the Multiverse can cast a vast array of spells—they can drain the life of a foe, supplement their allies with arcane strength, even summon a dragon. But all magic requires mana. Mana is the magical energy that powers spells. Where do you get it? Mana comes from the land. Mages must know a place to gather mana from it. Mana is scarce, so mages don't have infinite energy to cast spells. They must make bonds with lands to gain new sources of mana.

White — Plains
Blue — Islands
Black — Swamps
Red — Mountains
Green — Forests

The
Planes

The Multiverse—a boundless expanse of worlds, each different from the last. These worlds, called planes, differ as widely as the imagination. One plane might be covered entirely in dense jungle, for example. On another, city has replaced nature entirely. Still others are volcanic, icy, barren, or more like our own world, with many varied elements.

Most planes are spheres with an atmosphere and one or more suns and moons; they resemble planets. But there is no law of physics common to all planes of the Multiverse. Planes can be infinite expanses of matter, tiny specks of empty space, or logic-defying inversions of normal reality. A plane can contain an entire, sprawling universe or nothing at all.

Only one thing unites all the planes of the Multiverse: mana, the energy that fuels magic. Mana infuses the land, and only those with a connection to the land can call upon its mana. Some planes are far richer in mana than others. On those planes, magic is powerful and commonplace. Elsewhere, where mana is scarce, magic is rare.

Average beings have no idea that planes exist beyond their own. They live their lives believing their world is the only world. Their perception is limited by the scope of their experience, cut off from the rest of the Multiverse. Only planeswalkers know the greater truth: that each plane is but one of many, and that only they can travel to planes beyond their own.

All planes are connected by the substance of the Multiverse itself: the Æther, called the Blind Eternities by planeswalkers—the only beings who ever see it. In this chaotic, surreal expanse of uncontained energy and matter, time, distance, and the senses have little meaning.

Their ability to cross the Blind Eternities is not the only thing that makes planeswalkers different from every other being in the Multiverse. That ability leads them to form connections with many different lands, to encounter hundreds or even thousands of different races and creatures, and to learn a vast array of spells—more than most archmages bound to a plane could ever hope to master.

The vastness of the Multiverse and the wonders it holds...that is what unites all planeswalkers, what drives them forth, through the Blind Eternities and into planes beyond their own.

The
Story

The RP is set the Academy, a Plane that has only a single building floating through it's otherwise empty, but vast space. The Academy was founded by the Infinite Consortium to be a recruitment center for planeswalkers. The Professor, and the teachers, as well as the students, rebelled, and defeated the Infinite Consortium. The Academy first began to keep planeswalkers from joining the Infinite Consortium, or their rivals, the Silver Golem, and to train them in the arts of magic. But the role of the Academy changed, and it became it's own planeswalker faction. The Academy now serves to keep both the Infinite Consortium from destroying the Silver Golem, and vice versa. The Academy works hard to keep both of the factions from gaining the upper hand in their war, and to keep the Multiverse from sinking into the flames of their war.

The
Factions

Infinite Consortium
The Infinite Consortium was a mercantile organization that spanned several planes. It specialized in procuring all possible items clients could ask for, even merchandise from other worlds. The Consortium was founded by Nicol Bolas but was usurped by Tezzeret in a bloody coup d'etat several years before the Conflux. The headquarters, under Tezzeret's leadership, was located in the Iron Tower in a desert region of an unknown plane.

While the individual cells survived to some extent, the organization as a whole was dissolved, when Jace Beleren crushed Tezzeret's mind, destroying all the information needed to run the Consortium with him. With little direction, Jace returned to the remnants of the Ravnica cell and assumed leadership of it. It is currently the only known active cell.

That is the history of the Infinite Consortium. But unbeknownst to Jace, the organization grew, like a water from a fountain of corruption. One of the old members, whose name is unknown, continued on with his cell. It grew from its original purpose to a Plane conquering machine. They have recruited multiple planeswalkers to their cause, and have built a vast, inter-Plane empire.
The Silver Golem
Founded on an unknown Plane by Karn to stop the spread of a Phyrexian threat to the planet, it was made up of several planeswalkers. They soon defeated the Phyrexians, but realized another threat to the Plane: The Infinite Consortium. And the rest is history.
The War
Across the Multiverse, you'll find agents of both factions fighting each other, either in an open-war that can ravage whole Planes, or secretly, Cold War-style. Both sides look for extremely powerful objects that could give either side the upper hand.

In this RP, you'll be taking the role of a resident of the Academy. You'll either be a student, a teacher/staff, or an alumni. The Academy is a school for planeswalkers, and commonly goes on field trips to war-torn beautifully landscaped Planes.

White Magic
White mana comes from sprawling plains, sunlit savannahs, and windswept meadows. In Magic, white is the color of law, order, and structure. White magic heals and protects and is often a force for justice and honor. When a white mage fights, legions of troops thunder across the battlefield with their banners held high. Enemy hordes are routed outside the gates of a castle. When white unleashes its wrath, the battlefield is cleansed of all life.

Order, protection, light, law: These are white magic's values.

White mages achieve balance through strategy and organization. For white mages, society is more important than the individual. They build strong defenses, rally the troops, and protect their allies. White magic heals injured soldiers so they can answer the call of battle again and again. White mages amass enormous armies, but sometimes a single, awesome champion is necessary to teach the enemy a lesson. At their best, white mages are self-sacrificing and moral. At their worst, they are uncreative and even authoritarian.

Examples of white spells include cleansing and healing magic, blinding light, and devastating waves of purifying energy.

White-aligned creatures are orderly, defensive, and cooperative. They gather fast and strike first. White mages summon majestic angels to devastate the unworthy. Legions of soldiers and knights form effective armies under a white mage's command. The soldiers might be small individually, but together they are overwhelming.

Each of the five colors of magic has two ally colors and two enemy colors. White is allied with green and blue. White mana and green mana share values of holism, order, and community. White and blue mana share values of thoughtfulness, structure, and progress.

White mana opposes red mana through the conflicts of order vs. chaos, defense vs. offense, and strategy vs. spontaneity. White mana opposes black mana through the conflicts of light vs. darkness, purity vs. corruption, and the needs of the many vs. the needs of the individual. http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/White

Blue Magic
Islands provide blue mana—the magic of the deep sea and the endless sky. Blue magic is about deceit, logic, and illusion. To a blue mage, information and knowledge are paramount. Blue mages want to know everything, and they'll go to any lengths to do so. When a blue mage fights, tidal waves crash against rocky cliffs, the wind whips out of stormy skies, and an enemy's spells fail as their creatures vanish into thin air.

Knowledge, manipulation, wind, and wave: These are the blue mage's tools.

Blue magic is reactive, calculated, and methodical. Its strength lies in patience and intelligence. Blue mages work behind the scenes, scheming and stealing secrets. They control their environments completely before making a move. Blue spells and abilities focus on prediction and illusion. Blue is also the color of technology and artifice. At their best, blue mages are inventive and progressive. At their worst, they are manipulative and treacherous.

Examples of blue spells include crashing waves, whirlpools of Æther, and even manipulations of time itself.

Blue-aligned creatures try to deceive their opponents or trick them into using magic in a way they didn't intend. Blue-aligned creatures often confuse, disguise themselves, or steal things from their enemies. Blue mages call wizards and weird beasts of the air and oceans to serve them. They summon crafty sphinxes, ferocious drakes, and elusive sprites. Titanic leviathans surface from the depths of the ocean to do their bidding.

Each of the five colors of magic has two ally colors and two enemy colors. Blue is allied with white and black. Blue and white mana share values of thoughtfulness, structure, and progress. Blue and black mana share values of secrecy, manipulation, and desire for omniscience.

Blue mana opposes red mana through the conflicts of water vs. fire, logic vs. emotion, and thought vs. action. Blue mana opposes green mana through the conflicts of the artificial vs. the natural, illusion vs. reality, and stultification vs. growth. http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Blue

Black Magic
Black mana comes from dank swamps, where things fester and rot. Shadowy wastelands, haunted catacombs, and fetid bogs are all prime sources of black mana. Black is the color of death, fear, and amorality—these are the twisted values of the darkness. Black magic is powerful and easy to wield, but it comes with a high price. Black mages are self-centered and self-serving. They will do anything to get power—no matter what the cost.

Death, ambition, and darkness are the stock and trade of black mages.

Black mana offers a host of gruesome spells. Black magic can unearth the dead from their graves and make them walk again. It can spread a pestilence across the landscape and drain the life from all who live there. Black spells can curse victims in horrible and enduring ways. They can warp the mind, poison the land, and kill creatures instantly. But the price is high and the risks are many. At their best, black mages are ambitious and unashamed. At their worst, they are enslaving and devouring.

Examples of black spells are tendrils of corrupting shadow, command over the undead, and projection of crippling nightmares into the minds of enemies.

Undead skeletons and ghouls, unspeakable horrors, and diabolical demons are native to places of black mana, and they're as self-serving and treacherous as the mages who control them. Black magic isn't limited to these abominations, though—death-cultists and secret societies of assassins carry out black mages' nefarious plans under cover of darkness. Black mages control the most horrifying of creatures, but always at a price.

Each of the five colors of magic has two ally colors and two enemy colors. Black is allied with red and blue. Black and blue mana share the values of secrecy, manipulation, and desire for omniscience. Black and red mana share the values of individualism, instant gratification, and self-interest.

Black mana opposes white mana through the conflicts of darkness vs. light, corruption vs. purity, and the needs of the individual vs. the needs of the many. Black mana opposes green mana through the conflicts of death vs. life, decay vs. growth, and greed vs. abundance. http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Black

Red Magic
Red mana flows from rugged mountain ranges, rocky crags, and the fiery heart of volcanoes. Red magic is about fury and passion. When a red mage fights, lightning arcs across the blood-red sky, lava erupts from the earth, and flash fires consume the land. Red mages can channel their wild emotions to raze a city or to harness flames into deadly weapons.

Freedom, fire, and impulse are the lifeblood of every red mage.

Red mages have no patience for talk or subtlety. They act quickly and recklessly. With red mana, a mage controls the power of fire and earth. Red mages scorch their enemies with fireballs or call down electricity from the sky. They can rattle the foundations of civilizations and destroy the land itself. At their best, red mages are dynamic, passionate, and unbound. At their worst, they are shortsighted, temperamental, and destructive.

Examples of red spells include rains of meteors, searing bolts of lightning, and huge gouts of flame.

Red-aligned creatures are warlike, frenzied, and dangerous. Red mages summon mighty dragons to dominate the skies. They send hordes of bloodthirsty barbarians or rampaging goblins to lay waste to their enemies. They also channel mystical energy and summon fire elementals of merciless power and destruction. Red creatures rage across the landscape cutting down anything that stands in their way.

Each of the five colors of magic has two ally colors and two enemy colors. Red is allied with black and green. Red mana and black mana share the values of individualism, instant gratification, and self-interest. Red and green mana share the values of action, base urges, and connection to the earth.

Red mana opposes white mana through the conflicts of chaos vs. order, offense vs. defense, and opportunity vs. strategy. Red mana opposes blue mana through the conflicts of fire vs. water, emotion vs. logic, and action vs. thought. http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Red

Green Magic
The teeming forests overflow with green mana, the pulse of nature. Green magic is about growth, life, and brute force. When a green mage fights, massive creatures crash through the undergrowth, animals enlarge to gargantuan size, and wounds close before blood spills onto the ground.

Strength, ferocity, and life: These are the values that sustain the green mage.

Green mages understand that the world obeys the law of the jungle—everything is either predator or prey. Green mages do what they can to accelerate and protect nature: jungles expand, artifacts crumble, and creatures regenerate themselves. For green mages, even the plants become lethal weapons. At their best, green mages are instinctual and adaptive. At their worst, they are savage, unthinking, and predatory.

Examples of green spells include wild, lush growth, sudden predatory hunger, and the might of an entire stampede.

Green mages summon a huge variety of creatures, from forest-dwelling animals to territorial elves and awe-inspiring behemoths. Some green creatures are living wellsprings of mana; others overrun their foes in a mighty rush of ferocious power. From towering nature elementals to carnivorous wurms, green creatures are the biggest and mightiest around.

Each of the five colors of magic has two ally colors and two enemy colors. Green is allied with white and red mana. Green mana and white mana share the values of holism, order, and community. Green and red mana share values of action, base urges, and connection to the earth.

Green mana opposes blue mana through the conflicts of the natural vs. the artificial, reality vs. illusion, and growth vs. stultification. Green mana opposes black mana through the conflicts of life vs. death, growth vs. decay, and greed vs. abundance. http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Green

Spell Casting Mechanics (Always a WIP)
1. Your Collection
Your Collection is all the spells you've learned over your entire life. All of your experiences in your entire life are compiled in this Collection of spells, whether they are instants, sorceries, enchantments, or creatures. In your Collection, you may also have physical artifacts.

2. Your Library, or "Deck"
Your Library, or Deck, are spells and artifacts that you have prepared for beforehand. These are your go-to spells. You could have spent several seconds, or several centuries to create this. This is what you take on quests, field trips, and what you "carry" on you in everyday life. Never get caught without a deck "prepared".

3. Your "Hand"
These are spells and artifacts that are immediately cast-able, as long as you have enough mana. Your hand is the first defense and your first offense. But be careful: If you cast more spells from your "hand" than you can replenish it from your Deck, you may end up with no spells to cast. You can make up for this with having creatures already cast, enchantments, or other "permanents" providing a defense while you get more spells into your hand.

A good example
Nothrend wrote:Ryvers

"Let's go then, and with my usual opening." With that in mind, he mentally tapped into the mana from his homeworld Arcadia. He could feel as if he was standing on the great green plains as the horses and centaurs galloping across her. He could smell the fresh smell of the grass, and hear the gentle songs of the wind. He extended his hand forward, and with a whisper, wisps of white energies began to appear from no where in front of him. The tendrils of energy fused, and in an instant, a Suntail Hawk was born as the burst of energy dissipated from wherever they came from. The bid-like creature flapped her wings and glided into the air, extending her claws towards Josev.

"Go," He commanded as the bird swooped forward.

The United Remnants of America wrote:Crenshaw felt a stab of pain, maybe to his soul, or possibly just his pride as the vermin overpowered his elemental. "Dammit.... My elemental is useless, especially if I brought another.... My Bird is pointless.... Hmm...." Crenshaw tightened his fist and felt for the energy to rush back to him, which it slowly did. He stood for a moment, flexing his fingers, trying to figure out what to do. Multiple ideas came to mind, but seeing those rats necessitated what he'd need for the coming tide. He tapped into the energy of his Sol Ring, and he reached out to a far-away Plain he had once visited. Soon, with his effort, a faint grayish-white circle of symbols appeared around Crenshaw's feet. He knew those dark creatures wouldn't be able to cross his circle of protection. Next, he against called on the forests where the elemental had come from. Next to Crenshaw's foot, a shoot of vine appeared and rose about a foot high. The Saproling soon grew into its form and took a rather pitiful spot next to Crenshaw's foot, sitting there like some plant-puppy. Crenshaw grinned before having a final thought. He tapped into the last bit of energy the Sol Ring had, and a green ring that seemed to be woven from a tree's fibers appeared on his right hand's ring finger. This was a Sol Ring, but it was made from Pine wood. Crenshaw grinned and watched the area in front of hi, his breathing labored from the effort. "Bring it on, you hag..."

OOC: Untap two forests, lay a Plains, play Circle of Protection: Black, play Sprout, use last colorless in Sol Ring to play Pine Sol Ring.

My Field: 1 tapped Forest, 1 tapped Plains, 1 tapped Sol Ring, 1 untapped Forest, 1 untapped Pine Sol Ring, 1 1/1 G Saproling

Artifacts
Nothrend wrote:The issue here are students having the ability to use powers that are supposed to be 'beyond' them as the Librarian simply 'locks' these powers out of the Academy. We've already decided that alumni and beyond can use these cards, but just not the students.

I personally only have problems with Black Lotus and Lotus Petal, but believe that Moxs, Sols (as long as we're not talking about 4 sols) and Paradise Mantles are okays.

With that being said, we'll still have to wait for BaRen and Mill.

Calces millia wrote:Well, we probably just have to make the students "store" any rare/legendary artifact they found/have to the Academy until they graduated and become an alumni, rather than actually banning it. The teacher can have it, but the amount have to be limited, say 4 or less, to make sure no one get carried away with it and becomes an OP character. In dangerous times, the artifact that stored will be returned to their respective owner.

That's my idea, so feel free to argue with it if you haven't meet your expectancy yet. In the mean time I have to tell you that there's a possibility of me grounded for the next week (starting tomorrow) to my bad grade, so I probably go hiatus again.

Calces millia wrote:First of all, I don't know anything about that rule existence nor I have played MtG in my entire lifetime until now. So, I'm sorry for not knowing that.

Second of all, I think I'm gonna agree with Northrend for this one, so this is our red light for those who want to use any legendary/rare artifact card. Make sure you don't use it unless you're a teacher or alumni, as doing that will be rewarded with immediate warning.

Ok.
Final passing on the Colorless Mana Debacle (Don't question the name, it sound official and junk)
Image
You can summon this creature using any combination of 7 mana from any source, as long as those mana includes two red.
So you can, theoretically, summon this creature with 1 blue mana, 1 green, 1 white, 1 black, and 1 red. That would count as the five colorless mana needed to summon. Then you have to pay an additional 2 red mana.
Any colored mana can be payed as a colorless.
But colorless mana can only be payed for colorless mana.
Example of colorless mana
Image
Ignore the bottom part.
See the "Tap: Add 1 Colorless to your mana pool."
That could be used to pay for colorless mana on the Shivan Hellkite. But you can't use it to pay for a colored mana.

Interesting... I want to play a Blue student, but I'm hesitant, since a Blue character would know lots of complex strategies and lore, but I know exactly nothing about MtG.

That's actually okay. Last time I had an MtG RP, we had a couple guys in the same boat, and honestly, he wasn't bad at all. One of the most involved guys in the RP.

The community we had here was very helpful with everyone, MtGer or not.

That's why I love it. Speaking of mtg, DAMN YOU ABZAN.

So what's the deal this time with 3 colors? I'm thinking about doing jund, jeskai, or just brining back vex.
98% of all NS users would cry if they had to read a lot to understand an RP, regardless of how good it was. If you're one of the 2% who simply would sit back and laugh, copy and paste this into your sig.

Well, it depends. Does he/she have a mastery of all three colors or a vague understanding of some and a mastery of the other, or any other combination thereforth?

So what's the deal this time with 3 colors? I'm thinking about doing jund, jeskai, or just brining back vex.

Well, it depends. Does he/she have a mastery of all three colors or a vague understanding of some and a mastery of the other, or any other combination thereforth?

He would be red primarily. And either jund colored and know the others just as well (for aggression) or jeskai focused on red (basically jeskai wins, with burn spells).

Also, side note, epic ending for the RP? Each character has an EDH deck that's a general they've gotten to ally with them, and uses it to fight whoever out main villain ends up being (seing as how we never found out in the first one, and I assume he has a big army).

Well, throw up an app. I'm fine with a three colored student, as long as he/she isn't overpowered.

I'm glad you did as well. Vex has kinda been hated in any other RP I tried to put him in. Thinking I'll bring him back. He was just so fun... And then I'll just have a jeskai student.

Alumnus application:

Name: Kordgem Laufter Zond
Gender: Male
Age (If human, 20-40): 86 (roughly equivalent to human 39)
Appearance and Race: An imposing sawback manticore, now showing a touch of silver in his fur, mane, and beard
Colors: Black, Green, a tiny bit of Blue (if allowed; see below and will TG if needed)
Do you want to be on a mission, or at the Academy by the time of the Opening IC Post (Y or N): At the academy
Do you want to be a 'Soldier' aka be commonly sent out on missions alone?: Sure
Do you wish to be an apprentice? (One of the teacher's aides) If so, which one (Must share a color with said teacher)?: Anybody appropriate; see backstory for ideas.
Would you like to be the Assistant Chaperone?: Looks like somebody grabbed this, but if you want another, I'll take it.
Do you play Magic: The Gathering?: I haven't for some years, but I used to... back when the forests were full of Singing Trees, and moxen were thick upon the ground.

Backstory:

Summoned from his native city of Ihrerdein, Kordgem was thrust into a Planewalkers' duel on Mirrodin, his summoner believing manticores good solely for brute strength. At the end of duel -- Kordgem learned neither his summoner's name nor who won the battle -- Kordgem was left stranded on Mirrodin. He eventually met and fell in with a tribe of leonin. While he was clearly not one of them, his appearance was similar enough that they prefered him over the battle's other refugees. They came to appreciate his size and intelligence, both useful on a plane littered unknown beings and fragments of powerful magic. Still, he prefered to be home.

In time, Kordgem met other refugees from other duels, all similarly abandoned by Planeswalkers. From them, he learned a little about magic and somewhat more about the Planeswalkers themselves. He learned that some his fellow "refugees" were actually veterans of many battles, serving the Planeswalkers repeatedly. Some reveled in the opportunity to satisfy their bloodlust, but most served with resignation -- what could they do in the face of such power? Kordgem felt getting home himself was no longer enough, and he vowed to help the others get home as well.

But his determination was of little use to Kordgem until he blundered into the end of another duel, and saw one of the Planewalkers fall. He bounded over to the body as it began to fade from Mirrodin, and grabbed up a small object lying in the chrome grass beside it. At first touch, knew it one of the "artifacts" Planeswalkers used to harness mana, and he took it and began to experiment with it. Kordgem's Spark didn't so much as ignite so much as start to smoulder.

Kordgem's Spark slowly developed as he worked with the lesser wizards stranded on Mirrodin. He fueled their powers, and they taught him the rudiments of magic. As his Spark grew to flame, he learned the simplest spells by himself and he eventually mastered the magic of life and death. He also learned a touch of meta-magic, and he found that with it, he could indeed send the summoned back to where they came from. To his consternation, he discovered he couldn't send himself home; he'd grown too powerful for such a simple trick to carry his spirit, and he'd need to learn Planeswalking to do so.

The lesser mages he encountered couldn't help him, so Kordgem was still stuck on Mirrodin when Lady Penelope found him and brought him to the Academy to finish learning magic properly. Kordgem took a surprisingly long time to graduate from the Academy given his magical abilities at admission. His self-teaching had led him to a few incorrect conclusions about the nature of magic, and he needed to unlearn his mistakes in order to become a true Planeswalker. Kordgem graduated three years a really, really long time ago, and has remained associated with the Academy since. :p
