Kaupunjohta, Independent Grand Duchy of Bethausia

The summer days in this former East Europan colony in Southeast Asianna were humid; the temperature in this month can reach a little over a hundred and six degrees Fahrenheit. There were people that even wet their clothings or even get tanned. However, at doesn’t mean that all people have to stay home all the time. On days in the summer, people would go to where the landmass connects the ocean and play with each other or even be lazy all the time. With that, smiles rose on their faces with luxurious mode being available to the minds of all people.

That was what summer has to feel like, but when it comes to the anticipation of an event involving the shedding of blood, the beaches would be filled with a little people or none at all. Hubrecht, the current Grand Duke of Bethausia, has seen this sight when he took a stroll down to the beaches. He wished he never had to experience this kind of anticipation. He never wanted to experience his land to be ravaged by the wrath of the metal weapons of the era.

Grand Duke Hubrecht of Bethausia

Walking to the meeting hall of the palace, he scanned through the exquisite architecture before gazing his eyes towards the people in front of him. In front of him were a couple of generals of the Royal Armed Forces of the Grand Duchy of Bethausia, the Prime Minister, and his beloved sister, Judith.

“So, when are the East Europans due to set foot on our land,” asked the Grand Duke.

“Prior to the day before yesterday’s declaration of war by the East Europans, we would expect them to be here within two or three days, after they have prepared their assets for war,” answered a general.

The grand duke hummed in confirmation.
“Well, has the draft proceeded smoothly as planned?”

“Of course, Your Highness. They are ready to defend this land from those autocratic pigheads,” answered the Prime Minister

“Our men in arms will also initiate a preemptive strike against these Imperials once they've settled themselves down. By locating the nearby towns in which we anticipate where the Imperials will set foot on, we will evacuate them before we commence our move towards them,” said another general.

"Good to hear from you, gentlemen.”

The grand duke scratched his back head, prior to the sentiment of anticipating bloodshed of many people still running through his head. He let an exhale in an attempt to subdue the sentiment.

“Brother, I know how you feel. I know you hate seeing people die, even I abhor death, but it is a necessity to defend. Those autocratic bastards have come to take our liberated land by force and we should do something to defend our land. We must take action now,” said Judith.

“Thank you for that uplifting moment you brought upon me. I always appreciate you helping me out in times like these. Now, I must take another stroll out in the sun. Gentlemen, you may proceed with the evacuation of the towns and have this nation on alert. May God be with us all. The meeting is adjourned. You can enjoy these last moments of peace before they come.”

“Don't forget your umbrella,” chimed Judith.

“No need to worry, sister. I always know what I'm doing.”

From: King Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII, King of the United Kingdom and the Lucis Commonwealth Realms beyond the seas, Emperor of Nihhon-Koku, Defender of the Faith
To: The Grand Duke Hubrecht of Bethausia

Greetings!

As I have ascended on the throne 2 months ago, It is my policy and will to prevent the Autocratic East Europan Imperial Alliance to expand its forces into its former territories. My father's failure in the War of Adam's Ear has costed my country an island near Guadosalam and once the Commonwealth joins the cause of yours, I doubt that the Guadosalam Federation and the Archadian Empire may very well invade your land and the three powers would partition it. I am determined to prevent these Imperialists from expanding.

I will send aid to help you ward off those soldiers in the land. They will be under the command of a general I know, who was my mentor and I know that he'll do a fantastic job.

Till then, You will have to wait for a few days.

On board the SMST Kaiserin und Prinzessin Maria, One of the Troopships deployed to Bethausia

Image

Over two hundred fifty meters long and stacked up to seven decks, the Kaiserin und Prinzessin Maria was one of the largest troopships ever produced and comissioned by the Imperial military. On the wooden surface and in the interiors of the ship, troops converse daily like it is another normal day. That was what it felt like in the office of Korbinian Achterberg, when several of his subordinates conversed with him for the premeditation of the war.

"Once we've got control of the coastal vicinity settlements of Fischgruppe and Thidinkhanadnony, we'll be able to deploy our troops and our supplies on Bethausian soil for the first time and make those towns our bases of operations," said one subordinate.

"Good. When will that KOHL general arrive?"

"I've got his telegram a few hours ago. He said he'll arrive when you start to gain ground."

"Hmph. Still thinks I'm an incompetent general, does he? Well, when we arrive at the capital to secure this former colony's interests, I'll show him that he's wrong by giving him some of the spoils. This meeting is dismissed."

Young King Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII, after his ascension on the throne after the death of King Regis Lucis Caelum CXII, His father.

18th of June, X829, Dettingen Palace, Great Lucis, United Kingdom

King Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII, A 28 year old man rose to the throne after the death of his 45 year old father, King Regis Lucis Caelum CXII. He could remember when he heard the news that the Imperials had given up Bethausia, The Commonwealth was one of the first to congratulate on its independence gain. His father became open to opening the doors to the Asianna's again. He had been in terms with the parliament, especially to Prime Minister John Cecil. However, The King died before he could go through with the plans and Regis had to do it but it was going to be a difficult task.

Image
HMS Lord Nelson along with HMS Yamazaki in the Ports of Devonshire.

Under the new policy for the Royal Navy by Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII, The Royal Navy would be modernized continuously. The Royal Navy had been building large ships than their older ones. The lastest were Lord Nelson-class battleships or were nicknamed "Noughts". These ensured that the Royal Navy would be prepared against the Imperial Navies. The modernization went the same for the Army.

On the 19th, Troops and Cannons started to pour out and into the ships and fight against the Imperials in a recolonization of their old colony.

Thidinkhanadnony

The troops set themselves down on a new land. A beautiful beach with an alluring countryside, they had recalled in their minds of former colonial rule in this nation, claiming that it was a good thing their forebearers set foot on this type of land. As the troops settled, Achterberg and his staff set themselves on the beach, scanning the area and contemplating the extravagant sight of the county like their fellow troops, before heading towards an abandoned East Europan-style magistrate.

They walked on the path, under the somewhat not-so-very-hot heat. As they strolled down, there was a little incident involving several troops of theirs began to push around several Bamar, the ethnic majority in Bethuasia, around. They shouted at them, intimidating them whilst giggling, resulting in almost abusing them. At this moment, Achterberg intervened and sent them away with a threat of court-martial. Continuing on the path, they reached the magistrate. Upon coming through the threshold, Achterberg asked a Bamar male on where those in charge were. After hearing from the Bamar that they have left, Achterberg thanked him in his native language before heading in to set a base of operations.

Kalaryhmän

The 74th Infantry Division approached a nearby town of Kalaryhmän to set up a garrison. It was one of those towns back at home; its architecture prompting up memories of the troops of the times back home. After letting them run through their brains, they quickly set up everything necessary for protection and rest. Once done, they settled themselves down to eat, sighing in relief after Achterberg ordered them to immediately march to this location.

Aaurnpyi Province

Troops of the XX Corps dispersed throughout the lands north of the ships. They set up garrisons along the way and eventually set up a base of operations in the provincial capital of the same name as the province itself. It seemed pretty quick to occupy this much land. Commanders and troops felt that this war seemed easy to win. At least, some of them.

Battle of Kankauyawat

Date: June 20, 1903

Commencement: 2:30 AM

It was a great night's sleep for the 78th Regiment stationed in a village in the outskirts of the plains of Kankauyawat. Their supper was a great contributor for their slumber. However, it was an exception for the guys on watch. Some of them won't succumb to the seduction of their supper or some were punished for falling while marching miles upon miles.

They kept their eyes open and held their rifles firmly. In these times, when the night passed by, it seemed like no threat has presented itself. It was a relaxing night, until some of them shouted of hostile movement, which gave way to the Bethausian commandos to give them their bullets. At that moment, troops rose up, with the sounds of cacophonous bangs resonating throughout the once-silent ambience of the night.

"Scheisse! I was having a good night's sleep! Tarhaaja motherfuckers! Yeah, you hear me," one soldier shouted.

"Yelling at them won't do any good you know," commented another.

"I was expressing myself. You know what it's like to have someone ruin your sleep."

He pushed down in a clip of five bullets into the open insertion slot of the rifle. Closing the with pushing and slamming of the bolt, he pulls the trigger once aiming.

"Fucking Tarhaajas."

"Incoming from the right."

Turning to where his comrade pointed out a couple of Bethausian soldiers, he charged onto to them. His comrade catches up with him with disbelief of doing such an action. They both were upon a couple of Bethausian soldiers, bludgeoning them to death or even dug their bayonets deep within their red, liquid soil. They backed down again on the ground once done with a little melee combat.

Although small in numbers, they were able to inflict several wounds onto the garrison. They hastened to their positions to pluck the Imperials out under the cover of darkness, like mice scurrying beneath the walls where the human eye can't see them. The Imperials were intimidated, but not to the point of retreating. The commander of the Bauer soldiers knew about the demeanor and character of the Imperial soldiers. At least, every general and officer should know.

When the Imperial guns sounded off, there were multiple ear-splitting bangs that rocked the ground. As evey shell impacted the ground, men were flying, albeit not very much. Although this may be a low rate of casualties, the commander isn't going to continue going on the offensive. They possessed none of the big guns like the Imperials'. With one order, they scrambled away into the night.

6:00 AM, Off the coast of Zanarkand.

The Commonwealth Fleet near Zanarkand

As the Commonwealth got near to Bethausia, Regis decided to stop at Zanarkand for a few hours before sailing again. The Fleet composed of mostly battleships, destroyers and transports. Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII wanted to go to Bethusia himself for a few days visit before leaving again. He had 5 of his closest generals to command the Commonwealth Forces against the Imperials trying to colonize their former colony.

However, Hearing that the landing places may be blocked by Imperial Warships, He boarded on the flagship of his fleet and command the Fleet himself. He himself had training when he engaged the Milites Fleet trying to attack Concordia and his fleet came out on top. He was also credited for modernizing the Royal Navy with newer ships.

By 9am, The fleet set sailed once more and prepare for incoming Imperial ships.

From: Reinhard Walkenhorst, Supreme Commander of the Imperial East Hindalesian Legion

I have sent in the III Corps to fight alongside you. It will be lead by one of the best officers I have at my command. Being said, he has attended the same military academy I was in. He is surely a staunch fellow.

Also, there are reports coming in of a Commonwealth fleet headed towards the vicinity of Bethausia. Be sure to ready your fleet for the incoming.

Best of luck

"Sir, Imperial Fleet spotted!"

"Hmm, Calm down, That's not necessary. Order the ships to immediately go to battle stations. Every ship must pick a target. Order the Destroyer Group to engage the larger Imperial Ships. As much as possible, Get them to engage close while our battleships fire from a distance."

"Right away, Sir!"

The admiral immediately sent a message to all the Royal Navy ships in the fleet.

"Attention! This is not a drill. Man your stations!"

On the gun platforms of the HMS Dreadnought, The King stood with his binoculars watching the destroyer groups engaging the larger Imperial Battleships. HMS Dreadnought was 5 of the newest Dreadnoughts made by the Royal Navy as part of the modernization. King Regis had bought 3 of them while being supported by other battleships, destroyers and heavy cruisers.

By 10:30am, The King heard that the destroyers had engaged the Imperial Ships, The signal was up to fire. The King gave the order to fire once the ships had gotten their visual on the battleships.

"FIRE!"

"Keep firing, men!"

"Load up!"

Clanking of shells on the metal surface of the ship's platform became another constant sound the resonated, besides the huge bangs of large guns, the cacophonous splashes of the calm seas, and the shouts of men. It became intense later in the day, as more and more ships joined in the heat of battle in the water.

Admiral Tomasz Geiger was overlooking the Imperial escort fleet. He looked through his binoculars of the sight of battle. A sight that caught him in concern was of the Lucian destroyers dragging out his battleships. He looked again at the Lucian side for a multitude of minutes. When done, he had a particular idea of what they are doing.

"Radioman, telegram those that haven't seen action. Have a bunch of battleships in the middle shell out those battleships and have several destroyers drag their ships at their right flank towards their left so that they can witness the barrage of the other battleships, battlecruisers and cruisers alike. We'll come back for the other battleships dragged towards the Lucians later."

"Yes, admiral."

Immediately, Regis reacted by the movement.

"Alright boy, order those destroyers to pull out and change their position to the left. Order the old ones to get out there."

"What?! old ones sir?"

"Old Destroyers remade to look like ours and controlled by radio to confuse them. Good thing I dropped by Zanarkand to gather more. Move half of those to the right and hit them hard with those. The other half will move the the middle. Once those get in close, order the destroyers to engage again and get close as much as possible. Move the Battleships a bit to the left and fire once they are in range of those Imperial ships."

"But sir, I thought our objective is to save this nation."

"Not anymore. Immediately send a distress call to the Grand Duke. Inform him to leave the land along with civilians. We've got troops to land and hold those sausage-eating bastards. Actually, Saving Bethausia would be disasterous for us so it would be best if we get the people out of there."

"Whatever you're thinking sir it must be good."

"Alright, Now carry your orders."

Immediately, The old ones, which were old destroyers that looked like the destroyers he bought moved to both the right and the middle of the battle in numbers. The destroyers relocated and managed to move to the left flank and get close towards the Imperial Battleships, getting into a close quarters firing.

The blast was loud. It brought ringing towards some of the sailors and soldiers on the battleship who were in close range. At least, on one battleship. While recuperating, other sailors loaded the guns to retaliate.

"Fire on them now!"

A bang of the gun followed, which destroyed a moderate or almost significant amount of the metal parts of the ships. But there was something that caught their eyes. Those Lucian ships were expected to be filled with men. However, this ships were void of them. This left the sailors discombobulated, until they saw the Lucian ships with men approaching on their position.

"Quick! Turn the guns on them! Now!"

With those words, they did what they were told. The Lucian ships intimidated them at first when they exchanged their shells with them; nevertheless, they were able to score hits on parts of the approaching Lucian ships. Although, this would probably be in vain.

The Admiral knew of these ships the Lucians possessed. He was astounded that the Lucians could afford such technology. The technology that his countrymen were trying to develop. Seeing that he's about to be in a difficult predicament, he ordered two-fifths of his fleet to retreat in reverse speed and attempt to enclose the Lucian fleet, whilst the majority will reverse to get some time to devise other moves, including the ones that will be implemented if this current strategy foils. As for the battleships that got dragged in the first moments of the battle, he decided it was too late to rescue them, for it will bring upon more detrimental costs upon him.

Regis could see that some Imperial ships had begun to retreat. However, He wasn't going to let his guard down for a moment. He still had some frigates and cruisers to reinforce his fleet. He decided to improvise despite the casualties on both sides.

"Good show but we're not out of the forest. Do we still have the cruisers?"

"Yes sir. You haven't even touched them yet and the admiral got tired of waiting that he got sea sick."

"Not much of a humor there, boy. Order half of the frigates to pursue the retreating column. If those bastards turn around, send half of the light cruisers and take care of them. Our frigates may lightly armed and our cruisers may not be strong enough bet those two will work together. As soon as they spot them, have them get close and engage within effective range. In case if it goes wrong, have a quarter of the heavy cruisers to support."

"Yes sir."

"Also, order the destroyers to pursue those Imperial Battleships and immobilize them for the our big ships."

"Roger."

At once, the frigates went after the retreating column of Imperial ships and had the cruisers blocking their way in case of encirclement while the destroyers kept the Imperial Battleships preoccupied and engaged closely.

"Sir, they're trailing us."

"Alright. Have 2/4 of the cruisers and destroyers, 1/4 on each side to sail out of our bulk and attempt to flank them. Have the battlecruisers and 1/4 of the frigates engage the enemy cruisers and frigates from attempting to subvert the progress of the cruisers. In the meantime, have the rest of the fleet provide cover fire against the Lucian battleships and the rest of their fleet. Once that is done with the Lucian ships depleted of their former strengths or at least depleted, push the rest of the fleet to strike their center and have the battleships engage the Lucian battleships."

"Yes sir."

In no time, the cruisers on both sides sailed to form some kind of loop. With the Lucian cruisers and frigates going after them, the battlecruisers and the frigates opened fire upon them. There was no doubt that the battleships and the rest of the Imperial fleet would dare not to exchange shells. All was going according to plan for the admiral, to make the situation on his better.

"The frigates are breaking, we can't hold them for long."

"Very well. Now, Maitland." Regis said through a radio.

Then, to the north of the Imperial Cruisers engaging with the smaller Commonwealth frigates, HMS Maitland along with 3 more heavy cruisers appeared in the scene. Regis had left reserves on his back and knew what was going to happen and Maitland's group was 1/3 of his reserves.

"Order them to engage that loop. With the frigates getting the shots, Maitland can deliver a blow behind their arses. Now, order our dreadnoughts to load up the 'dettingen' rounds and burn whats left of the central fleet before we finish the rest."

"Dettingen rounds, sir?"

"Shells that cause fires upon impact. Order every ship to fire on the belly of those battleships and destroyers to blow up the magazines. Pull our destroyers out and have 1/3 of them to support Maitland."

"At once!"

"And I could see oil flowing out of those destroyed Imperial battleships. Have the destroyers fire a phosphorus round before retreating."

HMS Dreadnought along with Lord Nelson, Yamazaki, Kiryu, Wellesley, Repulse and Lambert had loaded up phosphorus rounds on the 14 inch long guns and pointed directly on the bellies on the ships of the central fleet. After the destroyers has cleared the area and seeing that the center fleet of the Imperials were trying to get up, Regis wasted no time as soon as the guns loaded, he ordered to fire at the same time as Maitland and the heavy cruisers reinforced the staggering frigates as well as 1/3 of the destroyers reinforce Maitland.

It was unexpected. The incandescent orbs of the special rounds fired by the Lucians came like an awe-inspiring phenomenon, a phenomenon worth watching; however, under the disguise of it, danger. It brought sizzles to everything and everywhere as the shell compacting those little specks of light violently exploded. The Dettigen rounds did the same thing to shock the Imperial sailors along with the phosphorus rounds, save for the fires of hell it brought forward. Screams filled the air as the men within the path of the incandescent orbs came into detrimental contact.

The officers of the navy knew of this; even of the admiral. A bit intimidated they are, but the admiral insisted that they keep attacking.

Regis peeked onto his binoculars to see that the Imperial ships started to burn. With HMS Maitland and her 3 cruisers managing to foil an attempt by the Imperials to flank the Royal Navy and with the imperial ships of the center almost wiped out by the dettingen rounds, Regis ordered an encirclement with the redeployed destroyers to the left, the main battleships to the center and HMS Maitland with her sister ships on the right. The frigates blockaded the Imperials attempt to escape through the rear of their flanks.

The firing of the 14 inch guns loaded with dettingen rounds continued.

"Sir, the Lucians have surrounded us," claimed an officer.

"Urgh! If it weren't for the men being cowards," the admiral exclaimed, pounding on his desk.

He let out exhales of exasperation, his eyes bloodshot and almost letting out a set of tears. Overtime, his breathing decreased in intensity and his countenance deteriorated from a form of anger into ambivalence. An opportunity presents itself for the officer to ask/

"What should we do, Admiral."

"Well, the Lucians have cut us off in all directions. If we keep fighting, we'll lose more of our men. Telegraph the Lucians of our surrender."

"What?"

"I said, we surrender."

The officer went to the telegraph room to carry out the admiral's order. A few moments later, the admiral could hear the tapping in the room, in a code he knew about.

When the Regis had seen the white flag, He immediately issued orders to call the prison ships and have the survivors loaded with it. Luckily, There was a nearby ship that could load the survivors up and were immediately loaded.

"Gordon, Get your bastards and land on the port. Send a message to the Duke for evacuation. Repeat after me..."

From: Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII, King of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth Realms
To: Grand Duke Hubrecht of Bethausia

URGENT!

My Duke, It has been revealed that the Imperials are planning to loot the riches and the land from your people. You must evacuate at once. We cannot send any expeditionary force to save your nation because Zanarkand, New Akiba and Altissia Defence Forces are still in the process of being militarized incase the Imperials threaten the Oceania and the Central Commonwealth Nations.

Once you arrive on Insomnia, The capital of my country, The parliament has expressed interest in establishing the Bethausian Government-in-exile.

Those who can be saved must be sent to the port immediately. The Commonwealth fleet will be waiting but not for long.

Afterwards, the telegram is fully written and immediately sent to the Grand Duke.

"Brother, a message from the king," chimed Judith, the Grand Duke's younger sister.

Hubrecht glacned at her as she ran to him with a paper containing the words of the Lucian king. He was surprised from the mentioning of the name. A monarch of a robust nation. Surely, assistance would come from him. With a smile inscribed on his face, he grabbed the paper to read. He read it throughly, word for word. A few moments later, he gave the paper back to her, with disappointment riddening his countenance.

"Judith, sister," he finally chimed.

"What's wrong, my brother? You seem hopeless," she replied.

"Give word to the communications office. Tell them to write back to the Lucian king."

"What should I write down," said Judith after grabbing a slip of paper with a pen.

"Tell Regis, I will do what he says."

Judith wrote on the paper, getting down every word he says.

"Also, tell him that I will stay here."

Judith then stopped writing.

Regis had received the word. He was shocked to find out that the Duke refused to leave his homeland. But he thought that if Bethausia was to survive, Someone from its Royal Family or its members must be evacuated.

He knew that the Duke was a patriotic Bethausian and would rather not leave his place and die on it rather than disgracing it.

To: Grand Duke Hubrecht of Bethausia

My Duke, I understand your choices but if Bethausia is to survive along with the royal family, Its members of one or more must join with the evacuation with the rest of the Bethausian populace and as soon as the fall of the last city arrives, The second highest member must assume over leadership of the government-in-exile.

I insist that you must leave the Duchy of Bethausia in exile to someone of your family and have him/her and rest to join immediately to the evacuation force.

"What," Judith asked in shock.

"Tell Regis that I will continue to remain in this land," Hubrecht reiterated.

"You can't do this to me, brother. Why do you insist?"

"Because I will not stand to see this nation leaderless against our former colonial ruler. The people need a beacon of hope and I must be there for them as that beacon."

Judith felt water trailing down her smooth skin. Her teeth clutched, struggling to find the words to express what is on her mind. She couldn't believe what is being said of her older brother. She couldn't take the fact that her brother refused to leave with her.

"However, I will arrange for you to depart from here, as well as others in this nation's government. Once you land in Lucis, you will be in charge of the government-in-exile, which menas that you'll get the job in being a duchess."

"But, you can't. You can't stay here. What if I won't see you again? Why must you abandon who you love dearly?"

"You must not cry, sister." Hubrecht went over to her, wiping the pitiful tears of the beautiful maiden of a sister. He wiped it with a cloth, until there was not one single drip of water upon her face.

"I'll be alright. This is for the sake of our people. And also for you, yes? I must give those Imperial bastards an impression of never needing them to be rulers over us ever again."

Judith then rushed to her room. She can't take the motivation to talk anymore. It was too much to bear. She even saw in her own mind the imagination of her brother, dying beneath the hands of the Imperials. She ran as fast as she could, her hands gripping on the skirt to give more room for her feet to step on the hard, granite floor. Hubrecht was left stunned at what his siter did. He closed his eyes and deeply inhaled and exhaled quickly but deliberately, in pity of her, her poignancy for the decision he has made, and of himself, for making her fret like a little girl wailing for her father, leaving her for another duty he must take on.
