Who's the real you?

Postby Kenora County » Wed Apr 01, 2015 12:21 pm

Who Am I? Am I the conscious me,the guy who works and plays and thinks and is aware of himself? Am I the subconscious me the person with deep, hidden desires I don’t even know about? Am I the spiritual me driven by spiritual forces and universal realities I can only guess at? Am I the person I wish I was, or the person I fear I am? Am I the person my friends think they know? Can you answer these questions NSG? But most importantly, are you the person you are when no one's around or are you the person you are in public? Something subconscious definitely nudges me into deciding what I do, so that's a factor. I know there are two “parts” of me, conscious and subconscious. I’m more than a fantasy. For these reasons, I believe the real me is the one I am when no one's around. What about you?
"Nowadays everybody's got to go to shrinks and counselors, and go on Sally Jesse Raphael and talk about their problems. Whatever happened to Gary Cooper, the strong, silent type? That was an American. He wasn't in touch with his feelings. He just did what he had to do. See, what they didn't know is once they got Gary Cooper in touch with his feelings, that they wouldn't be able to shut him up. And then it's dysfunction this and dysfunction that and dysfunction vaffanculo!"

I know I'm an agnostic atheist libertarian socialist...but when it comes down to it that's all I really know about myself. I have no clue who I am, and that scares the hell out of me.
Agnostic Atheist Libertarian Socialist

Decisions should not be made based solely on the text in a book. Especially a book in which many of it's readers will openly admit that parts of it should not be taken literally.

Zero = Zero. You know who you are.

Excellent questions, and theme indeed.
I do not consider myself the sum of my choices, since those choices are always by circumstance.
Who I am is impossible to know here, now, because the Ideal, Real Me, is one only seen in perfect, idealistic circumstances which almost never exist in this world.

Most people we think are "evil" just because that's how they present themselves (out of fear, lack of self confidence or self defense mechanisms), are just vulnerable people who are too good or naive, and were hurt by the world so hard, that they believe the whole world is evil, and the only way to defend themselves is to "become" evil.

Since I am not like that, it's harder to know who *I* am. I've wondered this myself, almost daily and still do...
It's difficult to understand or "see" a person based on their choices, since most of their choices reflect not their true personality, but only how they are forced "to be" at the moment, by external behavioral factors (like society)

Yes, some people are truly as evil as their choices reveal them to be, and some hide that evil by masking it carefully and creating new personas.

I often found a vision haunting me, that of a faceless monster (kind of like Slenderman who stalked me in my childhood), that can wear hundreds of masks, but in the end, has no true "self personality". A person who is nothing, is a nobody. A Mark Wearer....this idea terrified me, and I called it "The Chimera".

I began to think I was the Chimera, a being with no true personality, only choices that reflect short or long term needs, or objectives. An ultra-spy reaching goal, after goal, finishing mission after mission, each one better than the last, only to discover it's true identity in the end, as the Prize :meh:

Memories are not something I can rely on, as those too can become corrupted. Am I my reactions? My unconscious responses, or my natural instinctive gestures that I often do without consciously willing or thinking to?

Often the subconscious is a middle ground between the Conscious Self (a social construct or external "persona") and the Unconscious Self.

My true self lies hidden somewhere in the Unconscious Self, and as the Conscious Self I have to protect that True Self, until I can unravel it's mysteries.

I don't exactly know the real me. All I know is there's much more to me than I show to most people, and maybe even myself.

Yep. Precisely why I avoid labels like "socialist" etc.
Labels are social constructs, they cannot represent the Real "You"...

The real identity of a person, isn't in the ID or the name given by others, or by the worth society weighs and measures you in....but in a "You" that exists somewhere in the Nether, in a misty etherial world between worlds, that almost no one can see, maybe just you in rare short glimpses...

A true Self cannot be defined by words, or other social cues. A Society eliminates individuals, by adapting them, converting them, and hooking them into roles they play as actors.
But often times the actors don't remember who they are off-stage. And confuse themselves with the part they are acting in, or the social play they are actors as member-participants in.

When thinking of who I really am, I guess the saying: "It may look like a monster, but there's a little girl deep down, inside it's stomach" comes to mind

Who am I? I am but the sum of my experiences, I am more today than I was yesterday and will be more tomorrow than I am today. I don't know who first said that but I think it sums it up pretty nicely.

I am a moment in time, an event, representing a conjunction of forces.
Some of those forces, some of those vectors, are understood.
Others are not.
It is astounding that I should have enough commonality with the other events, moments, around me that I can use language and imagine some common frame of reference.

Not so astounding. The mechanical "autobot" part of our minds that has rehearsed, predictible reactions and answers is not the real "Us"

The real "Me" is the one who doesn't act or react in the same way others do. Since the real "Me" is different from everyone else, and their habits. But some real "Others" do resemble the real "Me", and that is the first and best key I have to understanding or seeing "Myself".

People who resemble the real You, can help you see the real You. So seeking those people is the best way to answering these questions.

Or as someone said it best "Birds of a feather will flock together". People who you like being around, can decide and determine who the Real You is... :)
