Big Powerful Race Car: Sign of Power?

Postby Infected Mushroom » Thu Feb 26, 2015 11:07 am

A lot people around me like to show off their brand new expensive race cars or brag about extra parts they are buying to customise their super-expensive toys.

Clearly, such people, along with much of society, view big and expensive fast cars as a sign of power, prestige, and status.

Should it be viewed as such though? Or should it be viewed as a foolish investment (a much cheaper car can still get you from point A to point B and may even last longer as a functional vehicle) or as a sign of personal insecurity?

What do you think when someone drives to your house in a super powerful car? Are you impressed?

If the guy you're dating comes to pick you up in a gigantic, super powerful shiny red race car worth millions of dollars on a first date... what conclusion would you draw?

My opinion: Generally, I think its completely illogical to consider the acquisition of large, expensive cars (with speed capabilities that aren't even legal on the roads because of the speed limits) to be a sign of status, power, and savyness. It should be seen as a sign of personal insecurity (I need big toys to impress others) and/or a foolish investment. Society's got this all wrong.

What do you think?

Yup, looks like someone is trying to compensate for something else that is not all that big or powerful.

But I suppose this sort of consumption makes our economists happy?

You could say the same thing about almost any item that is not a necessity. They're wants, they're purchased to satiate ego, and to try and present a sense of prestige and power, especially if a luxury item. Whether they do or not, is in the eye of the beholder.

At the end whatever car you buy does not matter because your driver is the one who is going to drive it most of the time

I'd wager that the majority of people that own cars probably don't have personal chauffeurs.

People with more money than sense. Either more money than they could ever wipe their rear with to where it doesn't matter and it's just an overglorified piece of fashion and prestige (luxury=money=power), or the person doesn't have a lot of sense in the first place. In either case, more money than sense.

It's not necessarily them trying to show off. There's a reason why tracks were invented.

I'd wager that the majority of people that own big powerful cars probably don't have personal chauffers.

That's still a vast vast minority of people who have a driver. Even if someone has a big powerful car, doesn't mean they have a driver. And yes, an Ambassador would have a car. That's a given. How many Ambassadors are there though?

Val's first question if the man I was dating showed up in a fancy sports car. "Where's the cupholder?"

But seriously, whilst I'm a massive car fanatic, I would suspect somebody who isn't and is driving a fast car is certainly trying to show off.

I mean the Ambassador car, just see any parking lot of any club in any city, you would notice that every car especially the big and powerful cars would have a driver

Dude, just because you live in India where labour is cheap so people who are even a little wealthy have chauffeurs does not mean that everyone elsewhere has chauffeurs.

I highly doubt anybody roaming around with a big car would take a pain driving the car himself, it is painful to drive a big car, If anybody is wealthy enough to purchase a big car, he would be wise enough to pay a driver so he can sit in the back seat, the point is of leg room, there are cheaper cars with wider leg room and some expensive cars don't even have good leg room behind.

I just find it difficult to believe that anybody would take a big car and drive it himself, it is just plainly stupid to do so, for driving yourself you take a smaller car that is easy to drive, or you take a good motorcycle like a bullet.

It is a sign of power. They have the means to buy it and it works as a status symbol.

Should it be viewed as such though? Or should it be viewed as a foolish investment (a much cheaper car can still get you from point A to point B and may even last longer as a functional vehicle) or as a sign of personal insecurity?

This is a very poor argument. Why don't you just say, why buy cars at all? I mean public transportation can get you from point A to point B. Or why go on a vacation? Its a waste of money. Or why go eat out? Its a waste of money. Or why buy anything at all? Its a waste of money.

I don't plan on visiting any other country in the foreseeable future so it is ok, the point is in my case, it does not matter as I anyways would not drive some big hummer and a simple jeep/ Suv would do the job for me, the car should be 4 wheel drive though and should be able to survive higher altitude like Rohtang pass and should have a good suspension and breaking system.

My dad with a C4 Corvette would like to disagree.

Besides, why would I ever want to let someone else drive my sports car?

Nope. I prefer to drive my own cars.

Mostly because I love to be the one in control. I don't mind other people driving for me, but I just prefer it as a matter of convenience.

Dude, you're criticizing people on what you see what happens at clubs.

What you see in clubs and with ambassadors is HARDLY the equivalent of "everyone who drives a sports car".
