The Howling Children [CLOSED]

Postby The Blackdown Hills » Fri Jan 23, 2015 12:38 pm

Co-Op: Breitenfeld-Sibbesborg

An Empty Planet

Washington, D.C. December, 2016. Much has changed about the city, much like cities across the globe. The city was quiet, with nothing left living to make sound. Only the sound of wind echoed through the streets. The once-tall buildings were crumbled and left to waste, slowly being reclaimed by nature. The rubble crushed the cars, parked in wait for their dead owners to return. The scene in D.C. was just the same in New York City, Los Angeles, Moscow, Beijing, and all of the other major cities of Earth. It seemed that the world was devoid of life, waiting for nature to take back her righteous place at the throne.

The Settlements

The world had been stricken by the most aggressive virus ever seen by scientists. Dubbed "Hades," by enthusiastic scientists, the virus spread like wildfire, leaving only death in its wake. The virus affected all nations, no matter location. Hundreds of millions were dead within the first two weeks. As the piles of bodies were burnt in the streets, the United Nations made a decision. Thus began the Settlements. Hades seemed to be unable to spread on the Antarctic Continent. The united governments of China, Russia, Norway, Great Britain, and the United States, began the construction of settlements deep in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. The settlements were build underground, and were put under the control of the Unified Antarctic Settlement Organisation (UASO). The Organisation was a success, bringing thousands of people to six settlements, leading from the Ramsay Permanent Settlement. Things in Antarctica were going well for the settlers, at least, until the howling began.

Ramsay Permanent Settlement

Image

Ramsay is located in what was previously called Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. Now, the area on which the six settlements are built is known as the Antarctic Free Zone. The settlement is almost entirely subterranean, the exception being the large Ramsay Bio-Dome, where organic food is grown for the settlers. Ramsay, like the other settlements, was built deep into the thick ice, and is powered completely by wind and solar energy. The settlers live in homes much like luxury apartments; modern and stylish, yet spacious enough for a full family unit. The settlement includes full primary and secondary education, and accommodates people from many different cultures. Ramsay is occupied by primarily American, English, Russian, and Norwegian settlers, however several other nations are represented.

The RP

A strange howling has been heard from the sub-basement at the New Moscow Settlement, merely twenty miles from the Ramsay Permanent Settlement. Now, radio transmissions from New Moscow have stopped, causing the leaders of Ramsay to worry. This RP will focus on residents of Ramsay, who will be directly affected by the troubles at New Moscow. Will these settlers band together to find out what happened to New Moscow, or will they cower in the face of adversity, and fall prey to the mysteries of the ice?

As OP, I will RP as a settler as well. I want the RP to move naturally, so characters will be left on their own to make decisions about their actions. They will decide whether or not to band together, or whether or not to travel to New Moscow. The only special thing about my posting will be that I will include environmental changes, as well as new developments from New Moscow (should the Ramsay settlers take interest).

Application:
This is the application for a settler of the Ramsay Permanent Settlement. Players may have one or two characters, but no more than that.

Name: Anna Brekke
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Appearance [Either image or description]:
ImageNation of Origin: United States
Occupation within the settlement [if any]: Doctor

Brief Biography: Anna was born to a Norwegian-American family in Thief River Falls, MN. Her father, Lars, had come to America to study medicine, and he brought his wife, Bjørg, with him. Anna had a very happy life growing up, playing hockey with friends on the lake behind her house. By the time she was in high school, she played for a local team. In part due to pressure from her father, but mostly due to personal ambition, Anna gave up playing hockey in order to focus more on schoolwork. Her dream was to be a doctor, like her father, and she would do anything to achieve that goal. Her high grades in high school, combined with extensive volunteering and internships, helped Anna to receive a full-scholarship from the University of Minnesota to attend school for pre-medicine. She went through college with high marks, interning at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis. Unfortunately, Hades struck the United States before she was able to receive a fellowship, so she was forced to leave in order to obtain a spot in the Ramsay Settlement. Now, she is a doctor at Ramsay.

Nation of Origin:U.S.
Occupation within the settlement [if any]:Soldier/chief of security
Brief Biography:Captain Carver was descended from a long line of soldiers. He like his father before him served with honor since he was old enough to join. He was lucky to have been picked for this assignment, but he still can't shake the feeling he could have done more. However he has since thrown himself into his work. With the developing situation at the neighboring settlement Carver wants to lock down Ramsay and send a small team to investigate. However he will not allow anything to stand in the way of the safety of Ramsay's citizens.

Excellent, Shay is accepted. The Chief of Security of Ramsay is called the Police Chief, so that is his career. There is no military, so a soldier does not exist there.

Before I can accept you, I'll ask that you fix several things. Firstly, in my opinion, a 6'8" 36 year old with the features you described is slightly terrifying. I can guarantee that he would be an outcast in Ramsay. Also, I'd appreciate if you gave Boris a surname (even if not used in the RP). I'll have to think about this application, because I am not sure that first of all, the description of Boris is reasonable, and second, that the grammar used is sufficient.

Name: Matthew Godleski
Age: 32
Gender: Male

Appearance [Either image or description]:
Image

Nation of Origin: United States
Occupation within the settlement [if any]: Repairman (Electrician by trade, however he apprenticed to a plumber as well)

Brief Biography: Matthew was born in Brooklyn, New York, and he is very proud of that fact. He grew up worshipping the Yankees, and played baseball often as a child with his two younger brothers and younger sister. His parents were both office executives in Manhattan, so he didn't see very much of them when he was a kid. He spent most of his time growing up with his grandmother and his friends. Matthew was never a very good student, preferring the more practical subjects. He spent a lot of his time repairing cars with his Uncle. When it came time to graduate high school, Matthew decided that the military would be best for him. After only one tour of duty in the United States Army, he found himself back at home with a Purple Heart and no job. He decided to attend a nighttime trade school, where he learned to do electrical work. He apprenticed with a plumber during the day, and eventually, he was employed again. He was driving to a job when news came that Hades had hit New York. Thanks to the influence that his father had, Matthew was employed by UAOS, and was sent to Ramsay Permanent Settlement to assist with the construction. He hasn't heard any word on his family, but he assumes they are dead.

Name: Zoe Godleski
Age: 17

Gender: Female
Appearance [Either image or description]:
Image

Nation of Origin: United States
Occupation within the settlement [if any]: None

Brief Biography: Zoe was born in Brooklyn, New York, with three older brothers. Her eldest brother, Matthew, is fifteen years her elder, however they had a very strong relationship as Zoe grew up. She had looked to him for support and advice in many things, using email to talk with him during his time in Afghanistan, since their parents were rarely home. Zoe had always been trying to keep up with her brothers in sports, pursuing both soccer and track, excelling in both. The motivation that drove her to her success both academically and athletically was the thought of beating her brothers at things - she loved the competition. When the Hades virus hit, she was at her school, although her father was able to take her out of it before things got too bad. Her father had been unable to get her into Ramsay, like she had with Matthew, but he did manage to get Zoe a place at a different settlement, called Elizabeth Permanent Settlement. She left soon before the Hades plague hit her home, killing her two brothers and her parents. Zoe knows that her family is dead, but has not been able to communicate with Matthew since he went to Ramsay. She has now been sent to Ramsay, her request to change living area finally accepted by UASO.

So could the Brekke, Carver, and Godleski characters be close to one another by this point or are they relative strangers.

Name: Count Sébastien Henrik de Vaux-Ibsen
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Appearance [Either image or description]: light brown hair, green-grey eyes, fair-skinned, handsome, tall.
Nation of Origin: Swiss-Norwegian
Occupation within the settlement [if any]: English, mathematics and physics teacher at a secondary level
Brief Biography: Sébastien von Aargau was born in Oslo, Norway on 30 June 1991 to a Swiss father attached to the Swiss Embassy in Oslo as a military attaché who also happened to be a hereditary papal count and a Norwegian mother distantly related to the playright Henrik Ibsen. He spent the first seven years of his life in Oslo (with short stays in Bergen and holidays throughout Europe and the world) and moved to to to the United Kingdom in the summer of the year 1998. At the age of thirteen he was sent to the Institut Le Rosey in Rolle, Switzerland from which he graduated in 2009.

After completing his military service and reaching the rank of lieutenant in the Swiss Army he read physics at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne) from which he graduated in 2013 and immediately began a master's degree in Applied Physics at Imperial College in London, England which he completed a year later in 2014. In early 2015 he began a doctorate in physics at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom but he was forced to abandon it roughly a year later due to the great challenge humanity faced and his desire to do whatever he possibly could to aid humanity in such a grave crisis.

In view of the situation, he enlisted in the Norwegian Army and was charged with digitalising and protecting the documents contained in libraries and archives across the UK and in England especially as the Antarctic settlements were built. Needless to say, Sébastien succeeded in digitalising many invaluable documents and literary works while also taking physical books of great importance such as a Gutenberg Bible with him to Antarctica. He now lives in an apartment at the Ramsay Permanent Settlement along with his Icelandic girlfriend, Anna.

While he is only a teacher he hopes for his knowledge of physics and mathematics to be put to good use by the directors of the permanent settlement. He even dreams of completing his doctorate and starting a university. Apart from his qualifications in physics and by extension mathematics he speaks English, German (both Swiss German and Standard German), Norwegian (Bokmål), Swedish, Spanish and French fluently and is interested in literature, history and economics.

Since Carver is Chief of Police for Ramsay, it is likely that he knows Doctor Brekke. The Settlement is large, but people still manage to know each other. It is also likely that Godleski knows the Doctor, since his line of work can be dangerous.

Very well-written application and biography. I'm happy to accept Sébastien, however I'll note that his position of nobility will not be recognised by the government in Ramsay. This will do very little to alter the course of the RP, though, as the government and the laws will be mentioned merely as a suggestion and thought. The leader of the settlement will not interact with the populace unless necessary.

This will do very little to alter the course of the RP, though, as the government and the laws will be mentioned merely as a suggestion and thought. The leader of the settlement will not interact with the populace unless necessary.

Very well.

Update

Postby The Blackdown Hills » Sat Jan 24, 2015 9:00 am

I've updated the introduction with a list of accepted characters. I feel as though three more characters would make this RP complete, and I could post an IC for it. That's the end of the update...

Name: Eleni Zaytseva
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Appearance [Either image or description]:

Nation of Origin: Russia
Occupation within the settlement [if any]: Assistant Teacher

Brief Biography: Eleni was born in Moscow, Russia. Her father was an extremely wealthy businessman, and her mother was a nurse from Greece. Eleni never had a difficult upbringing. The wealth of her family made it simple for her to access the best clothing, food, and other material items, in the entire nation. It is fair to say that she grew up in extreme comfort, however this did not make her into a bad person. Eleni worked very hard in school, often receiving amongst the highest marks in her class. She was also an avid runner, competing for a track and field team in the 5000m long-distance run. She was ranked very highly in Russia amongst youth runners, her best time being 15:02.23. Standing at 5'11" Eleni used her long legs to secure victories in her sport. Her dreams of going to the Olympics were cut short by the arrival of the Hades virus, which swept across Russia quite fast. Her father hurried to send her and her younger sister to Ramsay Permanent Settlement, managing to get her on one of the last trips from Russia. Eleni now is an assistant teacher at the secondary school, and she also cares for her younger sister, Mila, who is seventeen.

Eleni (and Mila) is gladly accepted. An assistant teacher may not have work often in the settlement, but it is acceptable.

If you intend to use her in the RP, then please do. I stated in the introduction that each person may have two characters at the maximum, so that is not a problem.

Name: Lee Gibson
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Appearance: Lee Gibson is a slight figure, his appearance bordering on emaciated. Round wire-framed glasses highlight his sharp blue eyes, resting on a nose that seems slightly too thin for his face. His default expression seems to be a slight smirk, which comes off as a mix between self-confidence and arrogance. Gibson has a full head of sensibly close-cut hair, so dark brown that it appears to be black much of the time. He is clean-shaven, but the darkness of his hair leaves a slight shadow along his jawline. Although slight, Gibson is taller than average, and this is made even more apparent by his very straight posture. He is almost always seen in his trademark black peacoat, and will occasionally take a small butterfly knife with a brushed nickel handle out of his pocket and play with it, particularly when bored.
Nation of Origin: United States
Occupation within the settlement: Radio technician
Brief Biography: Lee Gibson was an only child, born to what could be considered the typical east coast North American family. His father was a mathematician, while his mother worked in materials engineering. From an early age, Lee took an interest in mathematics, much to the delight of his parents. He excelled, and was pushed towards higher and higher level math classes. In college, he became more focused on engineering, but had not gotten very far in his studies when Hades struck. Due to a hobby maintaining HAM radios, he was able to get a position at the settlement, helping communicate with the other Antarctic settlements. Since he is young, he is not the chief radio technician, and was not on shift when the transmissions from New Moscow stopped. He spends his spare time running and djing for the radio station WFRZ, based out of his room.

I'll start working on it then.
