16 August 1725
Tidal City, Stormwrath
War. It has erupted. It wasn't much of a surprise, though. The people of Stormwrath knew that this was coming. Tensions between the humans and the anthros have escalated recently, in the forms of discrimination, jingoism, racism, and ultimately, supremacism. Humans thought of themselves as more superior than their anthro counterparts and vice versa. Fauns, hybrids of humans and anthros, have been often caught in the crossfire. Ever since the 1690s, despite their basic rights being granted, the other races, particularly humans, saw them as a scourge; some even calling for their extermination. The fauns reacted in protest and in terrorist attacks on Tervalian cities.
Altaro and Texurica have not been on very good terms because of this. Neither have the Altarians and the Elumbish Islands. Since the Elumbish and the Altarians hated each other, trade sanctions were put up whenever an issue with their respective minorities rises up. This has particularly put a strain on the Stormwrathians, who were drawn into the sanctions because they were the spawn of the Elumbish. But then, that was 300 years ago.
Passenger boats carrying humans were turned away from Altaro, and ships carrying anthros cannot enter Tervalia. Altaro in particular, would use its bigger gun diplomacy to force the human ports to open to their citizens while forcing human ships to divert their course away from the anthran continent. One particular incident, the sinking of the passenger ship Rosalita Clair, had earned the condemnation of various human countries, including Stormwrath. In response, a total trade embargo was imposed on the Tervalian countries, a move considered an act of war.
Tervalia Dome was filled with the members of Parliament that day, and Empress Sable was presiding over the assembly. She was the most powerful woman in the human world, holding sway over a great power in Zero. Her word is highly regarded, which would be the very thing Stormwrathians would regret later on. Prime Minister Jonathan Miose had wanted to stay out of this war himself, but was opposed by the Apiscii and Munisci. Right now, they were in the middle of an intense debate.
An Apiscius stood up and spoke, "Ladies and gentlemen of the assembly, should we stand by and watch as Altaro constantly harasses our neighbors to show that they are better than all of us?"
"It might sound silly, but it's the best way to deal with the conflict", replied Miose.
"Avoiding it is not our best option. In fact, we have been ignoring this issue for too long. Look, the Altarians have revoked their Treaty of Amity, which contains their trade pact and non-aggression pact with us. Also, the alliance had already been broken with them a year ago. Why bother sitting on the fence when many of our neighbors are standing up to their imperialist motives, especially when the Elumbish Islands collapsed?"
"Aren't we already standing up to them? The Merdeka City Address was certainly one of those-"
"That address did little to deescalate the tensions, which are now practically boiling over. In this case, words do not solve anything."
"But they sure can address our actions–"
"Which were next to nothing."
Miose was already rubbing his head in a perplexed emotion. "Alright, I need to know which members of Parliament approve of a declaration of war." More than 86% of the 720 members of Parliament have raised their hands. It was already clear that they do want Empress Sable to grant this request. He turned his head to look at Empress Sable, who was sitting in a chair on the balcony of the hall. She stood up and then declared to the assembly, "Very well then, may your decision not be regretful, members of the assembly. By the power vested in me as the Empress and Sovereign Monarch of Stormwrath, I declare that a state of war shall be in effect between the Empire of Stormwrath and the United Confederation of Altarian Nations. May we stand with our heads held high, in triumph or in disgrace. Ave Stormvrathia!"
The assembly raised their voices and chanted, "Ave Stormvrathia!" and then applauded of their decision. And so Stormwrath, along with the members of the Tervalian Coalition, sided with Texurica in war against Altaro, not realizing how big the impact will be on the world that they, their children, and their children's children, will live in.
