The AnyDialect(TM) Classical Language Thread

Postby Themiclesia » Mon Dec 22, 2014 8:02 pm

For perhaps the better part of this millennium mastery of the classical languages (usually defined as Greek and Latin) has been taken as one of the foundations of education; (un)fortunately, this tradition, however powerful, has faded in most parts of Western Europe and the Americas. This thread, in continuation and observance of that enterprising spirit to re-create a common tongue for intellectual discourse and expression, is devoted and dedicated to those languages. Discussions in and regarding those languages are the principal raison d'être of this thread, but other tangents are welcome.

χαίρετε, ὦ ἅπαντες φίλοι μαθηταὶ τῶν γλώττων· ἐν τῷδε τῷ τόπῳ εἴπωμεν περὶ αὐτῶν. :)

Edit: conversations in this thread should be in either AnyDialect TM Greek or Latin.

I don't lose too much sleep over the loss of an expectation of classical language knowledge to demonstrate education.

Agreed. Linguistics is frankly a hobby. Mathematics and the practical sciences are more telling of an impressive education. My abominably badly structured national motto should be a cue as to how much I value a 'dead' language.
Balance is important in diets, gymnastics, and governments most of all.

Please continue in a classical language if you want to discuss the importance of them. Also, I recall that you've asked for a revision on the Latin Motto thread, one which was given but never adopted.

I'm not arguing that it has some vague value. I do argue against the idea that it is of enough value that we should weep its loss as a standard to demonstrate education.

Lengthy conversations should ideally be in either Latin or Greek in this thread. English segments should be limited to a sentence or less.

I weep that it's not part of standard education. Sure, it's not something that's "practical" (makes money), but Greek and Latin texts are the foundation of Western civilization, from the Greeks, to the Roman Empire, to the Renaissance, to the Enlightenment.

A small note, to drag this thread away from a threadjack about the value of classic greek and latin:
The topic what the place of classical greek and latin should be in western education is not the topic here (unless written in said languages :p ). You're free to start a different thread on that though.

I beg to differ. Certainly just as much in the parameters of the thread on Classical Language as Sumerian. Of course if YOU genuinely spoke Wolof you would have already realized it qualified, and if you had looked it up to fact check before attempting to call me out you would have realized your error...if it was an /honest/ error.

But certainly anything I post anywhere isnt in the parameters of the thread. Not enough room in my sig.

The OP says this:

Themiclesia wrote:Edit: conversations in this thread should be in either AnyDialect TM Greek or Latin.

Therefore Wolof doesn't come under the parameters of the thread. That Wiki lists classical Wolof as a 'classical language' is neither here nor there in this context given the explicit instructions about appropriate languages listed in the OP.

Sumerian doesn't come under the parameters of the thread either; but then I never claimed it did. Most people who know I'm an archaeologist likely realised that my posting 'my hovercraft is full of eels' in Sumerian was a Python-quoting archaeology joke. Whether it was a good one or not I leave for others to judge.
